The Best Lunch Restaurants in St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Chef Sharon Richards-Noel’s dishes are born of her roots in Trinidad and Tobago. Dishes like jerk chicken, oxtail stew, and vegan curry make for a hearty, flavor-packed midday meal. Be sure and grab a couple of bottles of chef’s specialty sauces, and note that West Indies is closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday." - Justine Jones

The Twin Cities’ New Restaurant Openings of Fall 2022 - Eater Twin Cities

"Chef Sharon Richards-Noel grew up on the island of Trinidad and moved to Minnesota in 1982, where she first opened West Indies Soul Food as a food truck. The restaurant also operates a popular stand at the State Fair’s International Bazaar, but a permanent space is in the works on University Avenue in St. Paul. A menu isn’t available yet, but it’s a fair bet to expect some of the same highlights of West Indies Soul Food’s catering menu, from red snapper with rice and peas to curry chicken, beef, and goat. Richards-Noel started a GoFundMe to help fundraise for the new spot over the winter; the fundraiser is still open." - Justine Jones

Real Talk

Workers are very nice, the space is clean. Good vibe overall Oxtail Stew: taste 10/10, portion 5/10. If there was more meat it would be worth the money but despite the amazing taste I hesitate to order it again. If you don’t care about a small portion and spending a little extra, I recommend it. Jerk rib: taste 9/10 the meat is very tender and delicious, wish there was a little more bbq sauce on the meat. Recommend ordering extra BBQ sauce for the meat. Portion 10/10. Highly recommend, will order again. Collard greens: 10/10, may be salty to some but I like it. Will order again. Plantains: 10/10 delicious and great portion, will order again. Rice&beans: 10/10 good portion, well seasoned, will order again. Mac&Cheese: 10/10, will order again! Beef Patty: 10/10, hits the spot. Just eat it fresh right after you order it, or it will get dry. Will order again.

Google
I was very excited going here because of reviews I seen on the food; specifically the oxtail. However I’m sad to say I wasted my money, the rice and peas were really good and the cabbage was standard. However my oxtails were tough and pretty much inedible I’m disappointed and out of $27.

Google
Amazing place hidden on a corner lot. The food was delicious. The Jamaican Patty (hot beef) is highly recommended, as is the Jerk Chicken and stew. Make sure to ask for Hot Pepper sauce, as their other sauces (while good and flavorful) lack a kick. Great staff, food, and service.

Google
Oxtail with rice and peas , and collard greens Oxtail taste amazing and falls off bone- down side skimpy oxtails not a lot of meat . Small portion. Rice and peas taste wonderful ! Huge serving ! Collard greens also taste awesome (no meat as advertised) honestly still Great ! Nicely seasoned Jerk chicken Juicy and Good taste . Not very jerk due to lack of spice … Yet still good . (Sorry I dug in right away) Jerk ribs Whew ! TASTY . not even a rib fan but these thangs were absolutely fantastic ! Not necessarily jerk (lack of spice) but were soo flavorful , meaty , hint of smoked ? Jerk to me is spice ! SPICY . will have your nose running Didn’t get that Caribbean hot pepper sauce is bomb ! RECOMMEND. If looking for some spice . Bit of a mustard base ? Yet gives you that nice spice KICK (Sauce does come small) Jerk sauce . Is okay . Taste more like mild kicking bbq sauce (Sauce comes small)

Google
I ordered take out for the first time last night. I had combo meal with jerk chicken and chiken curry, rice&beans and plantains. Everything was so delicious! The lady taking my order on the phone was so kind and nice. She listened to my questions and answered them all.

Google
I’ve enjoyed West Indies Soul Food for many years: through their food truck and booth at the Minnesota State Fair. This was my first visit to their new brick and mortar location in St. Paul. I was absolutely blown away by the flavors and quality of the food! I ordered the fried jerk chicken special. Spicy and crispy jerk chicken with creamy mac and the best veggies I’ve ever had. I could eat the veggies alone with nothing else. The oxtail was tender thoroughly enjoyed by everyone in the family. Everything was made fresh and with care. WISF truly has some of the best Caribbean food you will find in Minnesota!

Yelp
So i heard about this place through the Too Good To Go app. When you do these orders, it is a toss up on what you get. I walked in and waited a couple minutes for my food. The people working there were very friendly. It's a small space so more of a pick up and go. Food was very hot and fresh. I really liked the rice, the rest of it had some decent flavors but just not my cup of tea. I would debate going back and trying to something else if I was in the area.

Yelp
Wow! My husband and I tried their Jerk chicken combo at the Minnesota State Fair - Kickoff to Summer event, and that was the best jerk sauce we have ever had. It had enough heat and was flavorful. I am not sure if they will be at the main State Fair event, but they were there by the grandstand in a food truck. The staff working at the fairground were also very uplifting and professional. The food was delicious. The price was good. The portion was enough. I would love to check out their restaurant in St. Paul on University Ave.

Yelp
My my my what a delight. Upon trying this menu I spoke with such delightful staff. She mentioned the restaurant was a family owned business and went through the menu options and specials with me. I didn't wait long for the food. I liked the art displayed at the venue and family awards. The ambiance is not conducive to dinning in, yet it works for to go orders. My favorite part was the quality and taste of the food. I had greens, rice and jerk chicken and they were all seasoned to perfection and worked in great harmony with each other. I was full after eating and wanted more as it tasted that amazing. There wasn't a whole lot of parking so I'm not sure how convenient things would be on a busy day. I will be going back for sure.

Love this place. The food is great! Would eat here every day if I could because I love the food that much. I wish there were multiple locations

Yelp
Man! I had no idea WIS had a spot on Victoria in frog town, if this was here when I lived in frog town I would've been a regular! We always find their food truck at event because we are obsessed with the hot beef patties, they are so good filled and cooked to perfection. I also ordered The rib meal, the meat was falling off the bone, the bbq sauce had great flavor with a spicy kick after taste, greens were delicious along with the rice and beans - the only thing that was disappointing was the Mac n cheese - it looks fire but the taste didn't hit for me. I'll definitely be going back my next time in STP because there's so many things on the menu that look fire. Service was great and all of the staff was super friendly, loved that they have the whole family involved and they seem very connected with their customers I love seeing that in a local biz!

Yelp
Wife and I stopped by to grab lunch to go after an appointment by the area. The food is 10/10 and the hospitality and customer service were amazing as well! I remember this spot every Monday and get sad they are open Wed-Sat only lol. The food is that good! I will be stopping as often as I can remember their open days wonderful place

Yelp
Picked up from their fixed location and the Caribbean Oxtail stew was exactly what I was hoping for. Tender and well seasoned. Rice and peas were solid and a great compliment to the stew. I'll be back soon.

Yelp
Not gonna lie I almost kept going over parking...drove a few blocks n decided to go back...heads up the spots in the back if orange cone is there you can move it n park...Best decision all day was to go back...THE FOOD WAS FIRE Even if I have to park blocks away it's worth the walk!!

Yelp
My family visits West Indies Soul Food on a regular basis. My employer asked me to put together a Juneteeth Celebration for our associates, and I knew where to get the food from. I called them Wendsday at 4;00 pm asking them to caterer our event on Friday. They were able to put togeather a menu in our budget, and were able to caterer our event for 350 people in two days. I highly recommend yhem for your next catered event, or dinner for your family. The staff is amazing and very friendly. Thank you for making our event special!

Yelp
We enjoyed Curbside pickup on Thursday...Yes!!! We missed them at the food parade on the fairgrounds so placed an order by phone. Well worth the wait. Spicy beef and regular chicken patties...you better be ready they are yummy, flavorful, freshly made and spicy no whimps here. We also ordered the plantains. They are soooo good. They disappear entirely too fast. You should definitely checkout their online menu and call in your order. We look forward to our next visit.

Yelp
Omg I can't believe I accidentally found real homemade Caribbean soul food while visiting friends here in St. Paul. If you're in the area I recommend you try this food truck. The jerk chicken curry is no joke. Soooo good.

Yelp
After reading reviews it seems this place has gone through fires, domain name thefts, losing real estate place. So their brick and mortar location on University is there and you guys must go NOW. Get everything on there because the plaintains were soft sweet but firm. The collard greens were buttery. The candied yams were spiced ever so nicely with the right amount of salt. My husbands chicken curry was to die for. Now that he had oxtail before but Sharon did it best. Do you know why it wasn't too tender why everything fell off because it's fun to gnaw on those tailbones and tendon. That oxtail stew broth had so much flavor and depth that I would liken it almost similar to he magic of Mexican mole except West Indies. After we were fat and full we had so much food insecurity still that we ordered 2 chicken patties to go and a cola champagne(iykyk). Just heated up in the oven and it was still good back home. Also we took the only 2 seats that were there and the culture that went through there felt like you were in the West Indies with Sharon playing throwback Marley and her singing along and her customer with strong beautiful accents. Go now!!!

Yelp
Yeah, the spicy beef patties are ammmmazing. I could eat one everyday, breakfast lunch or dinner. And they heat up well in an air fryer! The staff is awesome and curbside pickup is super easy! We love West Indies Soul!!

Yelp
Stumbled upon them at the Carifest. They had me at the sweet potato pie. Food: -Sweet potato pie, homemade, delicious, yummy crust, I devoured -Coco bread, homemade, delicious, reminds me of asian breads with the subtle sweet taste Price: -Very reasonable for the portions and quality, much cheaper than typical food trucks Service: -The sweet lady who handled my order and the equally sweet granny chilling there made me kind of wish I had a black family

Yelp
Love their paddies! Kinda pricey but well worth it. Whenever they're at local festivals I'm always trying to make sure I catch them!

Yelp
We were looking for new catering restaurants for our organization as we host meetings around 75 people frequently at our offices and I can't be thankful enough that we stumbled across West Indies Soul Food! Incredibly easy to work with, affordable, and, oh, the food was AMAZING!! Very well received at our business lunch. The jerk chicken is a bit on the spicier side, but it's jerk chicken so that should be a given. Also, the pot roast goes quickly so order more than you think because people love it! Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
Okay, so one time I went to the MN state fair and was thirsty as hail so I asked my friend to grab me a lemonade and he came back with a huge cup...I took a sip and it was right then and there that I fell in love...with the Caribbean lemonade that he accidentally bought me! I have no idea what they put in that stuff (maybe preserved lemons) but it is addicting and I literally cannot stop drinking it once I have a sip. If you aren't into sweet things, you need to try their Jamaican patty. I get the mild beef patty because the hot ones are HOT like xxxxxxxx cheeto hot. It's like this warm, flaky pastry that is wrapped around some savory/spicy/amazing ground beef and it's like heaven in your mouth when you bite into it. Try their ox tails with red beans and rice if you get a chance...the ox tail is really tender and the rice is super flavorful. The menu is pretty inconsistent though so the items appear when the owners feel like it.

Yelp
While the food looked like they would have been good, my friends and I did not get a chance to experience it. We stood in line for 15 minutes and in that time only 2 people had given their orders and there were still 4 more people ahead of us. We also heard 1 woman who had already submitted her order that she had been waiting for 15 minutes for her food. Since we were there on our lunch hour, we did not have the time to wait for this. It all felt very disorganized. Very disappointing.

Yelp
Authentic Caribbean food that you can't find anywhere else in Minnesota. I've seen them at the State Fair and I've visited their food truck at events/breweries in St. Paul. So good! And the head chef, Sharon, is one of the greats.

Yelp
If I could give WISF a 10 I would. I had Sharon prepare Xmas Eve dinner for 14( which is a small group for her) with Ribs, Jerk Chicken, Mac and Cheese and her amazing sweet potato pie. The food was incredible!!! My family was so impressed with everything. They said the ribs and jerk chicken were the best they have ever had,not to mention the Pie!!! We served the leftovers to a different group who stopped in on Christmas Day. They too thought it was amazing.( one admitted that they were better then his and that is high praise) It is also extremely affordable. I have paid twice as much for much less quality. West Indies Soul Food will definitely be a on our table in the future. Thanks Sharon!!!

Yelp
West Indies Soul is just fantastic. It's sad that they lost their St. Paul location due to fire and their Midtown Global Market spot go under due to it being at the Midtown Global Market, but their state fair booth with unbelievable lemonade, chicken and beef patties lives on. The food truck is a bonus and while working out the quirks of serving St. Paul streets, is still a good bet. I would fully support a resurrection on the Green Line.
