When dining out, I rarely order chicken. And, when I see "Grilled Chicken Breast" on the menu, I cringe. Yea, it's healthier for you but it tastes like punishment - dry, stringy, and bland AF. WHY would you pay $25 for that?!
BUT, when it comes to Khao Man Gai/Chicken Rice/Hainanese Chicken, I'm all over the breast like a stage 10 clinger.
I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of What The Cluck, a fast-casual Khao Man Gai eatery so when former yelper, Albertino M. told me they just opened, I scurried on over.
On the menu are 5 signature bowls:
*Classic Khao Man Gai w/ breast + thigh meat, chicken rice, broth (on the side), and sauce ($10.95)
*San Franciscan w/ breast meat only and spinach ($12.95)
*Chicken + Rice Soup ($10.95)
*No-Meat Bowl w/ tofu, brown rice, spinach ($9.95)
*Ultimate: The Classic w/ liver + poached egg ($15.95)
There's three rice choices: traditional chicken rice (rice cooked in chicken fat/broth), brown rice, and riceberry (hybrid rice that's whole grain, high in fiber + protein): https://bit.ly/2JLNjIe. The owner (?) let me try a sample of the riceberry - it's good and better tasting than your standard brown rice. It's al-dente and nutty.
However, for my first visit, I decided to go the traditional route and ordered the Classic Khao Man Gai ($10.95) w/ extra chicken ($3): https://bit.ly/2JMSMhD.
KMG is my ultimate favorite Asian comfort dish whether it be Thai, Singaporean, Chinese, or Vietnamese style, and What The Cluck's version totally hit the spot.
- Poached chicken: Soft, moist, and juicy, even the breast meat: https://bit.ly/2JMY2BT.
- Chicken rice: Tender and aromatic but the grains seemed like broken rice.
- KMG sauce: The fermented soybean, ginger, and garlic sauce packs a HUGE punch of flavor. Perfect balance of salty, savory, tangy and gingery-garlickyness with a mild kick.
- Sweet soy (there's bottles in the counter, make sure to pack some to-go): Added another layer of sweet saltiness but it's not overly salty.
- Broth: Clean, chicken-y, little oily, not too salty.
Overall, a simple yet deliciously satisfying meal. Plus, it's healthy. Next time, I'm going for the riceberry option ($2) as I like my rice with more texture.
Service was welcoming, friendly, and prompt. The owner (?) was super nice. I was taking my order to go and told her I was going to snap a picture before I go and she offered to help me. Super kind gesture.
As a new business, I also really appreciate at how receptive she is to feedback. My only feedback is to please consider adding a housemade chili sauce for those that like a good burn (sriracha is available though).
What The Cluck is more of a to-go eatery but there's one two-top table and counter seats available if you want to dine in.
If you've never had KMG/Hainanese Chicken, give it a try! Poached chicken and rice may sound boring but it's so not. It's THE national dish of Singapore for a reason.
