Whataburger Opens Digital Kitchen Restaurant in Austin - Eater Austin

"Whataburger opened its first digital kitchen where food is ordered and delivered without interacting with staff. The restaurant has customers place orders online or via the Whataburger app and pick up food in a 'digital pickup lane' from temperature-controlled lockers. The restaurant is cashless and there is no dining room." - Erin Russell

Ordered protein patties and they didn’t close the lid at all and grease got all over the bag and my car. With this amount of grease you could run a 18 wheeler across america

The digital kitchen concept worked so well and never had an issue, food was always ready in a few minutes. Now.... good luck getting to order much less actually getting the food. I went next door to rasing canes, ordered, fot my food and ate, and they guy that was in front of me at whataburger was still in line

I love this establishment but despise this location. Zero human interaction. You have to order on an app or a kiosk. The kiosk has a blaring beeps every time you touch it. The screens don’t work well. Editing your order after you’ve added the item isn’t allowed. You pick up your food in a locker like an amazon package. This process may save whataburger but it costs customers time and adds frustration. I am appalled that my favorite fast food establishment is selling out. Being a Texan, I am not proud of the direction Whataburger is going based on this experience.

Google
The new Curbside experience is a joke. There are no directions given in the app after placing an order on how to pick it up. When you drive up to the location, there are no directions on what to do. There are a few spaces with Curbside signs but none of them are numbered so I parked in a random spot and waited 10 mins with no directions on what to do. A worker walked by my car and ignored me and I could see multiple workers inside staring at me through the window and still no one came out to help me. It literally says on the app they will come directly to you, and no one did. I finally called the phone and the girl who answered started an argument with me that I don’t know how to read the numbered spots on the ground. Sorry it’s pitch black outside and I can’t see the ground where other cars are parked blocking said numbers?!! And again, they have sings at every spot which ARE NOT numbered and give no directions on what to do!! A complete waste of time and I don’t understand how this is a better experience than going through the drive through which they now DONT ALLOW.

Ordered food at the kiosk on my lunch break. Waited close to 45 minutes for my food without receiving a text or anything so I went to the door to ask about my order, because there were 5 other people standing around to do the same thing (the pickup lockers were broken and the kiosk was definitely either broken or not calibrated correctly). I KNOW that I ordered a Monterrey Melt meal but the kiosk did not print any receipts and I never got one texted to me. The worker (who I think was named Katrina or something similar to that) came out with a completely different order and when I told her that wasn’t what I put in, she told me that I was lying about my order and they were busy so I should just take the wrong order. I was confused and told her I was positive that wasn’t my order and this employee slammed the door in my face and came back out and again told me that I was lying and to just take the incorrect order. I relented because it was coming up on 50 minutes of me being there and asked to take the order she obviously wanted me to take and she tossed it at me before once again slamming the door in my face. As I was leaving she was also calling me names so I’m really not sure what her problem was. She was probably the rudest person I’ve ever talked to in an environment like that, and as a person who has worked in the service industry for YEARS don’t know how she’s employed with an attitude like that! The manager on duty was extremely nice and has offered to help me but wow…..what a horrible experience!!

Never got to place my order. When I pulled up, the girl on the intercom asked me, "Whats the name on your order, and Are you placing in order?" I said yes and my name. She said okay pull forward (without taking my order.) I pull up to the window and the girl says, "are you picking up?" I said no, I pulled up bc you said to pull forward. She then proceeds to argue with me about what she said stating, "you needed to order at the intercom" so I tell her, "Well I'm here now per your instructions." She then slams the windows in my face and walks away. I just drove off because the unprofessionalism isn't worth the money. If your employees can't communicate properly they have no business arguing with you about it. She could've just taken the order, accepted there was a miscommunication and kept it moving. I didn't expect her to apologize but to argue with a customer over a simple misunderstanding at 10am is ludicrous. Avoid this whataburger at all costs.

Google
EDIT: Now that their app is updated, you can't order from this place to pick up the food at the lockers without getting out of your car and going to the order window. I reported this to their customer service and they just thanked me for my feedback. it's not a digital kitchen if your app doesn't work! open to editing my review if they fix this issue. Initial review: This place is amazing. Don't let the boomers rating this 1 star because they can't use a smart phone sway you. Love not having to speak to anyone to get my order.

Google
Never mess with the tech just walk around the side and order through the window. Fast and easy that way. Best whataburger. I don’t know how or why but it’s like 10x better than the same food at the whataburger in Lakeway.

Yelp
It's pretty handy to be able to order off the app (getting some reward points for free stuff later) and pick it up either from the lockers or through the drive thru (this requires the food to be ready before you pull up). The app tells you when the food is ready (and there is a slight lag between that and when the screen changes over the locker). No sit-down here - strictly pickup or delivery since this is a kitchen only location. Overall - my orders have been mostly right so far - had one glitch, but you go around the corner to where the ordering kiosks are and there is a window where someone can help get you what you need. In terms of the food - the prep time is pretty quick from the time of ordering to when it's ready - usually about 7minutes give or take. As for the food here's my experience so far: * The Whatacatch fish sandwich is really good - wish they had this all the time. * The Whataburger Jr is usually what I get so I don't go to sleep after lunch. It's a decent sized burger and tastes like a typical fast-food burger. They tend to smash it down when they make it so the bun is pretty dense with the compression. * Fries have been crisp and hot every time - although they tend to be over salted * Onion rings - always hot and perfectly battered. These are hard not to eat until they're gone before you reach your destination. Best when piping hot.

Yelp
Just went to hit their empty drive-through and I was told I had to get out of my car, order at a kiosk, then go through the drive through to pick up my order. Call me a boomer, but HELL no.

Yelp
While visiting Austin my husband and I drove by this WB digital kitchen. Turns out it is the only one in existence (so far?). I would think this concept would work better closer to downtown or UT but my smart husband pointed out that since it is a new concept for WB that they are testing the idea out and that's probably why a higher populated area wasn't selected. Normally I will only eat WB out of desperation but was willing to try it because of the concept. We had no problems ordering except that I requested picante sauce but I didn't realize it was forgotten until I was done eating. I took my food out of the locker as soon as I received my text so the food was very hot and I had to give it some time to cool down. Better hot than cold. I would have give this review 5 stars if I were a member of the WB cult. They will give you a free brownie ($2 value) if you show them a 5 star review you have written for Google, but not Yelp. Rude! Haha Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if many fast food places end up following this digital route taking into consideration that there appears to be a shortage of workers for these types of jobs and the recent incidents of violence in this industry.

Charles S.

Yelp
Whataburger is delusional thinking this concept would be anything close to "innovation" or "progress". Whatever money they are saving by making the process "lean" I'm sure they are losing in business from furious customers. This digital kitchen is chronically understaffed. I went on New Year's Eve, and there were only two employees. There were about 30 people total and our order took over 90 minutes. Those poor employees were doing their best to keep up which made it impossible to speak to anyone to ask for an ETA, or get sauce, or correct something wrong with the order. My colleague LOVES Whataburger but comes back from lunch every time with a unique story about how they royally screwed an order or how it took him 45 minutes+ to get his food. Whataburger if you're going to spend so much money demoing a Taco Bell, constructing a building, getting "futuristic" kiosks, then spend a little extra getting enough staff. This is a kooky corporate concept that completely misses the mark. Negative 5 stars.

Peter D.

Yelp
This is a waste of time I came here and could only order through the electronic kiosk. It didn't work and they wouldn't let me just order directly to them what a waste of time avoid this place

Yelp
Absolutely idiotic concept. It's raining. And I can't drive through the drive thru. I have to get out of my car. Order at the kiosks. Then wait to get my food from a box? The agent was rude. The service is slow. This needs to be shut down. Over engineering at it's worst. Skip.

Yelp
Machines don't work but good god this is the best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten. If you like your hash browns crispy as hell this is all u need.

Yelp
All the negative reviews here are absolutely true. Every. Single. One. Initially, I was all for this concept and giving it a try. I've been three times and all three times I have not gotten a receipt or a text to get my food from what can only be described as a refurbished row of gym lockers. All three times I've been required to get help from someone inside, defeating the whole purpose of the concept. However, none of the other reviewers appear to have experienced an incorrect order. I've experienced this every single time. They've forgotten the cheese every time. I swear someone must follow some religion that goes against putting cheese on a burger cause my burgers are a clear protest against the cheese industry. Or maybe it's the opposite and someone working here is so addicted to good ol plastic American cheese that they're eating their whole supply. Regardless, this Whataburger has an issue with putting cheese on a burger. I've pushed through some bad Whataburger throughout my life, but this aggression will not stand! Anyways, go to a different location or go to Cane's next door. Don't waste your time with this shoebox.

Yelp
I have a secret! Don't go here! If this is the future where human interactions are out of the equation then I want no part of it. There is ZERO Texas hospitality in the digital kitchen Grabbing your food from a locker is demoralizing. The locker doesn't say howdy, smile at you, or thank you for your business. There is no one present to ask for condiments or a soft drink refill or more importantly inform you when a product is out. My advice to Whataburger is to fire the anti-social moron who dreamt up this concept.

Yelp
This idea is worse than New Coke. This concept is an abject failure full stop. App is clunky. Parking lot is a nightmare. Having to get your food out of a bus terminal locker is dystopic. Tried it twice (cuz I normally luv my WB) but each experience was frustrating and annoying. Whoever came up with The Digital Kitchen should be relieved of their duties immediately! C'mon WB, do better.

Yelp
I tried the new location and had no issues. I have the Whataburger app on my phone. I have sent customer service a note asking how to make a special request as I hate a ton of ice in my drink. I haven't heard yet. Everything else went as planned. I parked and waited for the notice my food was ready. Went up and put in the code; a door opened, and there was my food. Easy and way faster than a traditional Whataburger. The footprint of this location would not allow a full store. I am okay with this one if it means I don't have to drive to Lakeway or way down Ben White to get a Whataburger. It may have a hard time with McDonald's and P. Terry's so close. The work crews in the area were in full force at lunchtime.

Sam L.

Yelp
The food is good; but, they are incapable of filling an order correctly. They almost always forget something. I hardly ever see the same person at the pick up window -- they're young and inexperienced is my impression.

Yelp
Can I post a negative star? This is the stupidest idea, kiosk is ridiculously slow & even with all that they got the order wrong! No apple pies!!!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
This Whataburger location is very convenient for me. It is very accessible and the limous quickly. It can be busy especially during peak times. Food here is what you would expect from an average Whataburger. The outside is well maintained.

Yelp
If I could put zero stars I would this is the dumbest concept ever to exist they wouldn't let me order/ pay through the drive-through so why even have one in the first place... they prompted me to come out and help me out with the kiosk. I couldn't figure it out. They came out three different times to help me lastly to pick up the food in the cubby the text didn't even go through on my phone making this my last trip to Whataburger in becave / westlake

Yelp
The on-line order website did not want to take the coupon code that I had, the drive-thru line was long and slow, awkward parking for the kiosk process, and I just wish they would have allowed for inside seating . . . I will be going to the Ben White at Manchaca Road location for any future Whataburgers.

Yelp
Digital kitchen is the worst idea yet. Doesn't work. How do you request more sauce if there's no human interaction? Ketchup, napkins, salt, etc.? Terrible idea, whataburger. Human interaction is a necessity.

Dave E.

Yelp
Whataburger launched their digital kitchen recently and it has been a huge pain due to the app being very user unfriendly. It's not easily navigable and if you have a gift card balance you cannot combine payment if your order exceeds the amount left on the gift card balance. The concept missed the target on several levels in my opinion.

Yelp
I checked this new concept late in the evening 8 pm-/ it took awhile to figure it out-- from ordering ( forgot to get my ticket-- went back) had to figure out how to check my order was ready -- what number to put in and what locker to check-- pushed to help button-- no help received-- finally 3 employees came out of the side door and one went and retrieved my order-- which was a hamburger nothing extra! Glad it was not busy and I was not on a timed lunch/dinner break!

Taylor L.

Yelp
Terrible idea. Two thumbs way down. You can't order in the drive through and you can't dine inside. Traditional drive through experiences are way more efficient and customer friendly. Whataburger has lost its way.

David H.

Yelp
This concept should be called "WhatAFail." It's like getting your food from a vending machine at full service price.

Sean H.

Yelp
Ordered 40$ worth of food. They gave us 3 drinks and 3 chicken strips. When telling them our order wasn't full, they told us to pull around and wait in line for them to recreate what they had previously missed. AWFUL service.

Brian K.

Yelp
It's just a bad concept. You have to stand outside and order, can use the drive through to order. If you don't know the menu, you don't even know what to order. You have to enter your phone number to even see the menu. Then we couldn't figure out how to order a soda as part of the meal and have no idea what we getting so are just going to throw the soda away. Bad concept. Bad execution. Not to mention a long wait for the food.

Jimmy W.

Yelp
All great ideas are resisted at first by a society unwilling to change. The online ordering is easy and convenient, and the automatic rewards program gives you great deals. Shoutout to whataburger ketchup, the best ketchup.

Richard S.

Yelp
The online ordering system is VERY confusing and hard to use. i gave up after three attempts. then drove to an outside kiosk and ordered but couldnt locate my hamburger in the outside boxes. i HATE this overall concept.

Colin P.

Yelp
Went through the digital kitchen and it wouldn't let me select a drink with my combo, tried for 10 minutes. Order my sons food and went next four to Canes, they have actual people to help. Oh by the way, they messed up almost the entire order and took an extra 10 minutes to fix it.
