The 15 Best Restaurants in Lawrence, Home of the University of Kansas

"Wheatfields has been a fixture of the Lawrence dining scene since 1995, and it continues to rack up national and regional accolades thanks to its wood-fired oven and slow-rising dough. Stop by the downtown cafe in the morning to enjoy breakfast burritos and egg croissants, or come for lunch to choose from sandwiches, empanadas, quiche, and more. While the bread remains the star of the show, don’t sleep on the pastries and sweets: tiramisu, cinnamon rolls, eclairs, and an array of cookies and cakes." - Erin Socha

My daughter's favorite place to go to when back in Lawrence. We are visiting from Oregon. So I tried it this morning. Big disappointment at least for my friend and I. We both ordered the French toast with berries and cream. Only I never got mine. My friend decided to share hers with me while I waited and we ended up eating her so it wouldn't get cold and I decided to cancel my order. When going back to cancel it. I was told The order never got put in even though it was on the same ticket. Sure I got a I'm sorry and money back on it but I was really disappointed. I'll go to Lady Bird next time. Excellent service. Excellent food.

its a beer life

Google
What a quaint bakery with outstanding quality artisan breads and baked goods. The breakfast and lunch menu is sure to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. It’s well worth the one block walk off of mass street. They have a great patio that’s in the shade where you can enjoy your meals or coffee. Staff is attentive and the place is clean with great bathrooms too. The biscuits and gravy is always a great way to start the day

Google
Perfectly cozy cafe, reminds me a lot of when I lived in Japan. This cafe is what all should strive to feel like. Home made fresh baked bread, which they also use in their food. Friendly staff. I mentioned splitting 1 sandwich with my grandpa, and they served them to us on separate plates and gave us each a pickle, which they didnt have to do. So much care went into serving us and we could tell!

Oliver Meade

Google
The food here was amazing! In my opinion, their croissant sandwich and their breakfast bowl were delicious. In the croissant sandwich, there was melted cheese, ham, on a fluffy croissant. And by fluffy, I mean fluffy, like biting down on air The breakfast bowl was fantastic, with delicious potatoes, kale and mushrooms, topped with eggs. I will head here again, just to try their lunch menu!

Google
Fantastic food and very good prices. Employees were friendly, but the it's crowded and the lines are extremely confusing. To help you out: go to the right for baked goods only, middle for ordering breakfast or lunch dishes, left to pay and/or get only cookies and such. I had a three cheese melt and my wife had the mushroom melt, both of which were great.

Google
One of my favorite places on Mass for coffee and brunch. Their food is always fresh and delicious, and the location is great for cozy people-watching. The staff is great, I only knocked off a star because you very much have to fend for yourself during the morning rushes. The service counter is difficult to reach through the crowd and you're not always guaranteed a seat, so just be prepared if you go during peak hours. Overall, I consider it a must-visit if you're in town and I take all of my friends there if they've never been!

Amy Watowa

Google
Absolutely love this place. The breads are delicious and soft, the cinnamon rolls are big, biscuits and gravy recommend but the onion chive scones and mushroom focaccia are my favorites. Their desserts are good as well and several to chose from.

Yelp
Disclaimer: the bread and sandwiches at Wheatfields are fantastic and I would definitely recommend those. Their desserts aren't quite the same in quality and taste profile. My friends and I got two cake slices and a few other bites, and everything was just a little bit underwhelming. The Tiramisu Cheesecake started falling away from the crust at the back, which was soggy. The Black Forest Cheesecake had better crust and stayed together, but wayy sweet and not as chocolate-y as we were hoping for. Overall, still love grabbing a quick lunch at Wheatfields, but will pass on the desserts next time. If you're coming for the first time, it can be hard to get a seat inside depending on what the lunch rush looks like, so come a little early if you want to snag a table.

Yelp
Good service good food plenty of space fora larger group. Friendly stafff and great coffee.

Yelp
This was my go to college lunch spot when I was going to KU. The must try in my opinion is the number 16 ham and roasted pineapple. They add pickled onion and jalapeño cream cheese, and it's grilled on their house white sourdough. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything that you order here because it's all made in house. The services always super fast. You order the counter and they bring it straight to you at your table. I always make an effort to stop by when I'm in town since I've moved away.

Yelp
I wish this place was closer to us so we could try everything on the menu. We went to Lawrence recently and we stop in this place while walking around. My husband ordered lunch while I bought some bread. The three cheese melt was so tasty. The chile verde soup of the day was outstanding. The coffee we ordered was also surprisingly good. The walnut bread was delicious. The staff were friendly. The place was busy but they were very efficient. We liked the casual vibe that place had.

Yelp
SO SO GOOD!! Every sandwich we had was amazing. I highly recommend the spicy tuna and chicken salad. I want to come back and try everything else on the menu. I love that they have rotating specials. You order your food at the counter and they bring it to your table. We got our food fairly quickly despite the restaurant being packed. This is a great, clean space to study with a few outlets available. The restaurant was super busy when we came around noon but cleared out towards closing time. I would recommend coming at an off hour if you are planning on taking up a table to study at.

Laura W.

Yelp
Never again. We drove to eat here from another city. Ordered at 10:30am and at 11am one person at our table did not have their order, a sandwich. On asking, being advised they will not fill a lunch order until 11am, although others around us had their order. The lady at the register who took money, and the woman who brought a refund and slapped it down on the table, were inconsiderate and extremely rude. In this economy, $40 + tip is expected but to be overtly unbothered without regard, takes an extreme set of skills by the staff at WheatFields. I will be sure to not recommend this bakery to friends, providing details of the service and treatment. Each person I tell, will tell ten people they know, and before long everyone will know there is no value in spending money at WheatFields Bakery Cafe'.

Yelp
Great little breakfast café! Another reviewer referred to it as an upscale Panera, which fits- it's got Roasterie café, yummy looking pastries, and delicious food- we both had the breakfast burrito and it was FABULOUS (the sausage chunks are plentiful & juicy!). Service was great. Atmosphere is peaceful with nice piano music. They are also *mostly* low waste for dining in- ceramic dishes and tea pot, glass water glasses. They did make my partner's iced coffee in a plastic cup (unnecessary since we were dining in), and the to-go cup for his second coffee was styrofoam. I'd love to see them make a switch to plastic-free/styrofoam-free alternatives. Otherwise... Great little gem of a place (just bring your own cup!).

Yelp
Food: 5/5 This was one of my favorite lunch spots in high school and a local Lawrence gem. I always get the three cheese grilled cheese and a latte. You get to select three cheeses from a lengthy list for your grilled cheese. It comes on their freshly baked sour dough and services with a pickle. It's just as good as I remember! Before high school, I switched from chai lattes to regular ones, but both are well-made and delicious. They are always packed, so you know the food is excellent and worth waiting for. Service: 4.5/5 It's a bistro-style restaurant, so you order at the counter and then find a seat. The food service is fast, and the folks are friendly. You don't interact much with servers, but you can see people running around and working hard. Atmosphere: 4.5/5 The building has beautiful and unique tile work inside and out. It's a small corner space, but they make the best use of their areas for seating. The space is clean and the theme is timeless. Hacks: 1. There are two lines, one for the bakery items and one for food. Make sure you are in the right one. 2. Baked items are first come, first served and are baked fresh daily. Their bread is incredible, so get in early to get your favorite baked goods.

Yelp
Excellent bread made fresh and you can tell my roll was crusty outside but tender inside. The Kalamata Olive load is outstanding! My husband had the spicy tuna melt (#1) - it was very big, tasty and filling. We ordered the Chicken sandwich to take for my son on a fresh baguette (#5). My husband finished with a half chocolate dipped coconut cookie. Excellent staff so friendly and efficient. Good interior with plenty of seats and fee outside too!

Yelp
Food - ok (sandwich / lunch wise) - Bread is really good Service - good for a lunch shop. Ambiance - Good amount of chairs not really an Ambiance driven decor per say. Had the Beef and Cheese (with pickled onions and cheese) on cha-batta (special for the day) Ok sandwich, bread is of high quality, personally i don't prefer/like Chibatta but that's on me. Plenty of sweet treats here and I got a long boule of their Sourdough rye, Tasty bread with good flavor, structure (think layers and chewy-ness) and crust. If it weren't a 45 ish minute drive from KC, and if their sandwiches were better, tThen I would be back, especially if I lived in/around Lawrence.. They are located at 9th and Mass so takes a while to get to from the K-10 bypass out south. Construction (as of 9/10/2023 clogs 23rd back to K10, so just take Iowa back to I-70 or K-10.

Yelp
OMG! Delicious, delicious food at its local best. Where to start with WheatFields because there is so much to write about... the breakfasts, lunches, desserts or the bread. The bread, the bread... that yummy beyond compare homemade bread. If you only go to WheatFields for the bread, so it. There is nothing on earth like their bread. They have this amazing bread oven and the smells alone would leave you running toward this store. They have a variety of bread but they have their tried and true line. There is a cranberry walnut, a Kalamata olive loaf, rosemary, sourdough, steel cut oats, walnut sage, sourdough rye... it is all delicious. The sandwiches are incredible. They are big and melt-in-your sandwiches. The Rueben is the best you will ever have... I promise. I honestly don't know their secret but the sandwiches are amazing. I have had many of their breakfast dishes, too. They are all wonderful and should not be missed. Everything is fresh and delicious. One word of warning... this small place gets busy very quickly and it gets difficult to get a table or seating. You might have to wait your turn in line to get served and to find a seat. Trust me, it's well worth it! There can be a line to order, a line to get a table and a line at the bread counter. Your patience will pay off, though, when you get that delicious food. For the restaurant, this is a self-serve sort of set up. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. They don't follow up on drink refills or anything like that. You are kind of one your own but it's a system that works for them. They don't really have the space for servers. If you want something a quick trip to the counter is all it takes. One of my fondest memories is last Christmas and my mom came to see me from Louisiana. It did not take her long to be a WF junkie. We got there just as they were taking bread from the oven. We purchased a loaf and sat in the car, in the parking lot eating this warm, delicious bread. We had butter and just kept watching it melt into the steamy bread. What a wonderful memory.

Yelp
Had a couple of fabulous sandwiches and some pastries. Just passing through, so no chance for a return, sadly. Staff were quite friendly also. Well worth a visit.

Graham B.

Yelp
Wide variety of sandwiches--the ham and roasted pineapple sandwich is my favorite-- and their coffee is great. Employees are helpful and it's got a nice deli vibe to it.
google avatar

Sabrina M.

Yelp
The counter service was great, friendly people. But the cookies taste overwhelmingly of baking soda and flour. For a bakery that's been around decades I was disappointed.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
The absolute best honey wheat bread there is. Service is great too. I've been going here for over 15yrs. The only place I'll buy homemade bread.
google avatar

Marissa S.

Yelp
Such a great bakery. The bread is absolutely delicious, fresh, and not a bad price. I miss living in Lawrence and enjoying a quick lunch at the cafe. The #11 turkey, Swiss, and green apple sandwich is my favourite, and I always try to recreate it at home!

P H.

Yelp
Best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches I've ever had. The bread is divine. .................................

Yelp
Fantastic breads, delicious sandwiches! A gem in Lawrence. Recommended by the super cute visitor center :-)

Yelp
Have tried many of their bread options: sourdough, multigrain, champagne, olive. They're all the best in town! But my favorite are their pretzels! They're the closest to the ones I used to have in Germany, pretzel capital of the world!

Yelp
This place is incredible!!! So unique and in a league of its own. A working bakery -- things being baked all day, right in front of you, and put out fresh when ready! Smells like heaven in there. Super creative foodie baked goods and lunch items on the menu. This place reminds me of Arezmeni Co-Op bakery in the Bay Area, California. Very similar feel and gave me nostalgia. But Wheatfeilds offers way more and I miss it already! We were visiting family, and in only 4 days, we went here three times lol. We couldn't stop... breakfast and lunch. So many delicious choices. We tried the Focassia of the day twice: once was potato, Gruyère, etc - forget, and one day was cherry tomatoes, cheese, garlic, I think. The foccasia bread is so moist and heavenly... fresh rosemary in it, perfectly light and salty. I'll dream of it. The berry cream fresh toast was a huge hit with my son. Amazing thin, rustic bread used, fresh whipped cream, berries, syrup. Not too sweet, delicious! The breakfast burrito we got twice because we were obsessed lol. Both times, incredible. A mixture of potatoes, sausage, salsa, cheese, chilis, with their amazing spicy salsa on the side. Great flavors! The oatmilk vanilla lattes and whole milk lattes were both great, both days. Spicy tuna melt was so tasty, but we didn't taste any spice. Maybe we are too used to spicy food. Lol next time I'll just put their salsa on it mmm. We tried the empanada of the day: zucchini and green chilis. Ehh... pastry dough for it was good, but insides lacked flavor. I don't think it included cheese for that one that day. Ham and cheese croissant was a huge hit! I believe it's Gruyère w ham- soooooo good! We had the quiche of the day. It's a round mini quiche w a pie crust around it mmm it was a 3 cheese that day and very creamy. My son loved it-- we all did. I'd loved to try more flavors. Cinnamon roll was good. Not my fav, but also we didn't receive it heated up- maybe because that one was a to go order. Would be better warm. It was large too! Great portion. Croissant breakfast sandwich w egg cheese and bacon (scrambled egg). You can choose egg type, choose meat etc. Was good! My dad loves the ebbs braided bread baguette and orders it often he said. Ambiance: Such a cute and cozy feel in there. Very simple, down to earth feel. Simple tables of all sizes and window stool seating. Two bathrooms that stay busy. Busy your own tables to the bin, but saw some workers pick up. Counter ordering for meals, otherwise pastries given when ordered if ready. The obvious community spot, where all types of people gather there, as well as many regulars, tables big and small, families, older folks, younger crowd, everyone! And it has something for everyone! I was intrigued by so many things on their menu, and wish I could've tried it allllll... was so hard to choose! Everything is so fresh The place filled up quick later in the morning. It was a busy holiday week, w many off work and school, so may have been abnormally busy. But we still got tables after a few minute wait. Parking across the street in the free lot. Workers were mostly friendly and helpful. One girl wasn't the friendliest both days. If I lived there, this would be my spot. The salads looked good. Quiche and salad combo for $8 was a great deal I saw. The mushroom melt sandwich sounded super good w foodie ingredients. I'm seriously crying that I don't live there to eat it all. Lol I miss you already, incredible Wheatfields!

Yelp
Good food. Roasted red pepper Gouda soup was amazing. Kind of expensive but what isn't these days? Will be back!
google avatar

Will R.

Yelp
We were visiting the Kansas campus and heard about this place. The line was pretty fast for Sunday around lunch time. We found a place to sit inside. I had the Ciabattina with egg and cheese. Wow, it was really good. Just the right size. My daughter had a butter croissant. Can't really miss there. Overall, no complaints.
google avatar

Tracy J.

Yelp
I can't believe I have never rated the cinnamon rolls-OUT if this WORLD! I hate that I live so close because I always want them!! So good. Maybe one day I'll try something else!
google avatar

Tatum C.

Yelp
Best Café in Lawrence. They have really good sourdough bread and great customer service I feel like I'm best friends with the people that work ther e but I'm not
google avatar

Jason G.

Yelp
I came here with a friend on a beautiful day fall day. It seem like this is a pretty popular place. We were able to sit outside. They did a great job of having everything marked for COVID-19 purposes. The roast beef sandwich was simple yet very delicious. I also got their German chocolate cake and coffee which I really enjoyed. I would love to come back here and try their bakery items.

Yelp
I will be frequently visiting Lawrence here on out due to my new doc office, so of course I had to Yelp the best spots for lunch (specifically coffee shops that served a lunch menu). There were several spots to choose from and I went here based off of reviews here and Google. I got a small pastry, a Apricot Walnut rugelach, a bite-sized crescent-shaped cookie made from a rich cream-cheese dough. It hosted a combination of raisins, walnuts, apricot jam, cinnamon and sugar. It was so delicious! The sandwich was bomb that I ordered! The Croque Monsieur Sliced ham, smoked Gouda, Swiss, and aioli, grilled on White Sourdough. It had this wonderful smokiness to it from it being grilled, the smoothness of the Gouda and aoli balanced the great crunch from the bread! I agree with the reviews, over 900 and 4.5 stars, it seemed solid and it was. I will have a hard time trying a new place and a different sandwich the next time I am in!

Jeannine W.

Yelp
You just can't beat Wheatfield's Bakery. All the baked goods are displayed nicely and it is difficult to decide. I have tried about everything and I can't decide which is my favorite. The variety is incredible and tastes so good.Wheatfield's is my cozy place to go for lunch or just a snack. Lunch items are immense and whatever I have chosen is so good from salads and sandwiches to empanadas. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Make your cozy place, Wheatfield's.

Ashley My G.

Yelp
One of the best places I've eaten at in Lawrence! I ordered the mushroom melt and even though I had to wait around 25 minutes, it was worth it! Went on a Saturday around 12:30pm and that seems to be a pretty busy time but it slowed down while I was eating. They have a lot of fresh bread selections and can slice whatever loaf you want right in front of you. They also have a lot of different pastries! Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Karen P.

Yelp
My fruit tart was absolutely perfect. I'd seriously drive back to Lawrence just for another one! Also brought home some loaves of sourdough and Asiago bread, and they were both a hit. This place gets very busy and there's often a wait, but the staff is nice and fast. I'm looking forward to trying lunch here sometime.
google avatar

Doug W.

Yelp
This used to be a great restaurant that I have left 5 star reviews. My wife ordered a Reuben and the pastrami was 80% fat! My wife trimmed off the fat and ended up with a couple of strips of meat. The manager blamed their supplier. If I had a supplier like that I wouldn't accept their product but I sure as heck wouldn't serve it to my customers. The manager did refund her meal but mine wasn't any better. I wouldn't eat here until I knew they have fixed the problem. For me, I'll wait a year and if they're still in business, I'll go back then. I would advise the reader to do the same.

George L.

Yelp
Great bakery. Wood fire. Breakfast and lunch. Check on dinner. Professional. Breakfast tacos special.

Yelp
Visited while in Lawrence, KS for the weekend. Delicious biscuits and gravy. Speedy service. Great place for breakfast, coffee, and catching up with an old friend.
google avatar

Kerry M.

Yelp
Neighborhood meeting spot premier. Sandwiches, soups, salads, fresh bakes...all comforts for any season. Reasonable prices and top notch quality. Kind & supportive to local community. Excellent service and if there is a line- worth the wait
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Over priced and small portions. The pastries looked great but no taste. The baguette is amazing but costs $4!!! The walnut bread is great by $12 loaf. Great spot for rich older white woman.

Yelp
I'm calling it, here and now: WheatFields is the perfect restaurant. Over and over again, when I see a vacant space I think, "A second WheatFields would kill it in this location," and I'm positive that they would. Let's break it down on how WheatFields knocks it out of the park for every type of personality: The Health Nut: Big salads, fresh-baked bread, easy veggie opportunities galore The Picky Eater: They have a life-changing PB&J if you're still on the 7 year old diet The College Kid: Everything is almost always under ten bucks, without being in a grease-soaked fast food bag Places with parents: Parents love this kind of place. If they're on the fence, tell them it's like a local, much better Panera Aside from being perfect for everyone, they're always able to be efficient without rushing, to not take shortcuts and make sandwiches perfectly. Oh and they do breakfast, and they have good coffee. This really is the perfect joint, and I'll hopelessly keep my fingers crossed that they open other locations in the future so that I can be a weekly, if not daily customer.
google avatar

Bailee G.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! Literally the only thing is staff could've been a little nicer and a few more places to sit would be nice for those busier days like when we were there.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
Good spicy Thai wrap for lunch. WheatFields is always good. Good baked goods too.?breads and specialties
google avatar

Joe G.

Yelp
This place is wonderful. Everything about this place is delightful. I love their bread and always leave with at least one take home loaf. The quichés and sándwiches are so tasty. It's become a great place for me to stop by before heading home. I'd highly recommend this place! 5 stars!!
google avatar

Stone I.

Yelp
If you go to McDonald's you expect McDonald's. Here, I guess expect what you want. If you want extra sauerkraut and get a minimum amount then they fail your expectations. If you bring a laptop and expect a plug in they fail your expectations. If you want Voodoo Zappa potato chips they meet your expectations. If your wife likes her sandwich then it met her expectations. I'd encourage you to find another coffee place to meet your expectations.

Brenda S.

Yelp
Wonderful turkey cranberry sandwich on the best bread (walnut sage)! Always visit this café when I'm in Lawrence!
google avatar

Connie B.

Yelp
This cafe was better than average. Sandwiches were thick & hefty. Breads were their specialty. Noise level was high because they were busy. Accommodations were uncomfortable. No hostess. You had to stand in line to order. Then find your own seat. Slightly chaotic.

Justin S.

Yelp
A Lawrence staple. The tiramisu and pretzel twists are a must. The staff is always kind and overly willing to offer suggestions. Highly recommend.

Lisa B.

Yelp
Found this bakery while we were in town. We tried the granola and yogurt bowl and it was delicious. Also had the eggs, kale and potato bowl #2, and was pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend and we'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Raeley G.

Yelp
Really great place for lunch. I was impressed with my croque monsieur as well as the cozy and clean atmosphere. Service was friendly and quick. I do wish they had more than one daily soup for the cold months, but regardless I look forward to coming back to try some bakery items.

Yelp
extremely good food with a great employment energy, they seem to love working there! would definitely come again, a great place to stop and do some homework or just people watch outside. :)

Yelp
Um, YES!! Cute little set up it does take a while to get your food but it's all freshly made. My all time favorite is the number 7. Will be back!

Gabrielle S.

Yelp
Love to go to Wheatfields for almost any reason. The sandwiches are delicious. It's great to just pick up bread or cinnamon rolls to take home. The staff is helpful. I really like that they do art shows of local artists!

Mark C.

Yelp
I love this place for its diverse menu for lunch, brunch, and baked goods! I've had their bagels, lunch special Cuban, and some other sandwiches I don't remember. Cuban was AMAZING. I'll need to stop here and grab bread sometime on my way home.
