Whip In - Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Whip In is a lot of things. It’s a convenience store off I-35 where you can pick up a bag of chips on your commute home. It’s a bar with nearly 100 beers on draught, most of them local. It’s a restaurant where you’ll find a mix of classic Indian dishes and others imbued with a bit of Texas flair. And it’s a music venue that hosts live performances on weekends and special occasions. Most significantly, it’s an Austin institution that’s been around since the mid-’80s. In terms of the food, think fusions like South Asian frito pies, goat sliders, and nachos topped with cilantro chutney. None of it will wow you enough to make this your new favorite Indian spot, but it can satisfy a late-night desire for chicken tikka masala. Whip In is casual and funky inside, with a divey interior and a patio that’s well-suited for sipping beer. They’re not trying to be trendy, and that’s why it works—come for the draughts, stay for the food, and if a band starts playing, maybe stick around a little longer. Food Rundown photo credit: Taylor Hannan Masala Wings The wings are pretty crispy, and the masala adds a nice warm flavor. These go especially well with a cold beer from the bar. photo credit: Taylor Hannan Naan Pizza Basically a large piece of naan with cheese on it, this falls a little short of scratching a pizza itch. Skip it unless your 10pm brain really wants to know what a naan pizza looks like. photo credit: Taylor Hannan Lamb Vindaloo It’s not quite as punchy or tangy as other versions in town, and it feels kind of pricey for the portion size, but it gets the job done. We like to get it with garlic naan." - Nicolai McCrary

Best Beer Destinations in Austin

"The Travis Heights bar and Indian restaurant is all about beers, available on more than 95 taps and bottles and cans that line the shelves of the shop. The aesthetic is brewery chic, with unfinished ceilings, a tap wall, long shared tables, and, in true Austin fashion, a sizable outdoor beer garden with covered tables." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
I highly recommend this place if you are looking for fresh , delicious Indian food. And or hanging out with friends. They have a large beer on tap selection and 6 packs to go as well. This place has been here for a long time. The owners now are the latest owners and I think they're doing a great job. They have an outdoor area, patio and stage and they have live music sometimes. I had Saag lamb (spinach ),order of Samosas, and an order of Naan and a tap beer.I spent 40 bucks but I had enough food for three meals:)

Google
We love to come here for trivia on Tuesdays at 8! Good beer selection and the staff is great. EDIT: The korma is amazing, and Medium is the perfect level of spice. The pakoras are the shoe string style that's not my favorite, but still good.

Google
I love this place for the selection of craft beer and imported wine they carry. I mostly stop in to grab a unique bottle of wine. One time the bottle was corked and they let me trade it out for something different. It is a family run place that’s has been around for years. The vibe is very chill and the owners are all very kind. There is a covered patio area with a stage for live music. I wish I could give them 5 stars, but the food is inconsistent. The take and bake pizzas are always good though!

Google
This place is just cool. I call it a true hole in the wall, although with the utmost respect. It’s away from the crowded areas of Austin. Although don’t let that deter you. A must go to place when in Austin. My first time, although will be a regular. I had the Whipin Grill Platter. They didn’t have shrimp and substituted it with paneer. Wow, that paneer was amazing. Great grill platter. Menu is full of great food. I would 1000% recommend it.

Google
Wow this place is so different because it's on the side of a highway, looks like an old liquor store and serves Indian food with epic paintings of Ganesh on the side patio and on the inside you feel like you're in an old musty pub. Need I say more? Have I completely sold this place!? Good, come with me on my fantastic Whip in adventure. It wasn't my idea to come here, it was my friends because I have genius friends. They were always intrigued by the strange looking Whip In sign off the side of the highway, beconing people to try their Indian food. Who wouldn't be intrigued? So we arrived, ordered some beers (they have a wide variety!) and sat outside on the patio. I'm kicking myself now for not taking some great pictures of Ganesh - next time. After a while we decide to order some food and settle on: paneer tikka - quite nice, it comes with a sauce and lime which compliments the flavour bhindi masala - mild with nice flavor. I didn't get the slimy texture I usually get with okra which was a plus spicy paneer tikka masal - I liked this one because it was creamy with a good amount of heat dosa- the dosa came with sauce and a daal and was packed full of potato and veggies naan - yum! The food was quite good and the overall vibe was a lot of fun. It's such an unexpected place, definitely try it!

Google
Vibes. Vaaaaatavaran. Honestly I love whip in and come here any chance I get. The place has a great menu and the food is banger. The music is always good and they do different activities depending on the day. Sometimes it’s comedy nights, or trivia nights, or wine Wednesday. Loveeeee this place.

Google
Love at first bite! I didn't know what to expect from this unique dining experience but it was perfection from start to finish. We ordered samosas, chicken lollypops, lamb kebab and the chicken tikka masala naan pizza. Everything was perfectly seasoned and delicious. There are so many excellent draught beer options it is hard to choose what's next. The bartender was super friendly and offered samples of the beers we were not familiar with. The take home beer selection is outstanding. If I lived in Austin I'd be a regular, for sure.

Google
One of my favorite bars in Austin. Really good Indian style food, a great selection of beers and a nice atmosphere both inside and out. I've noticed that there has been some turn over in staff, but they always seem to hire good folks. Wait staff is friendly and will let you try before you buy. Final point if you are just looking for a to-go beer and wine selection they also have you covered with an excellent selection of craft, both local and not.

Yelp
Way bigger inside than you'd think! Good deals on cocktails - $8 for glass of wine or beer. $7 queso and chips. Chai latte $5 for 16 oz (a huge steal in this economy)! Haven't tried the Indian food but excited to next time
google avatar

Yelp
Whip in is a convenient store / gastropub with a full beer and wine list AND an expansive Indian food selection. And apart from that, they also have a vibey interior and a cute little patio perfect for soaking in some sunlight! And the best part is that the curries are legit delicious. There's also daily specials, tandoor items like kebabs, dosas, and even naan pizzas that I have not had the chance to try yet but I'm hearing them calling my name! lamb tikka masala ($18) - tomato based butter cream sauce with good chunks of lamb paneer curry masala ($16) - garlic ginger & onion jalapeño with a touch of tomato and onion chicken biryani ($17) - yummmmy it's a good biryani Lamb samosa - was filled with ground meat and just not what I expected tbh bc I was thinking about the potato filling Garlic naan ($5) - not super fluffy but you gotta have naan when eating curry

Yelp
I can't even handle the goodness that is Whip In. If you want truly authentic Indian food, this is the place. Note-they've also got other fare on the menu. If you want Prosecco on tap, go. Seriously, anytime a venue has Prosecco or champs on tap I'm a fan for life. I swear it's like they have 100 taps. I exaggerate but I'm not far off. Have I mentioned the stocked walk-in cooler with beverages for purchase? Or how about the coolers and shelves lined with literally any beer or wine you can think of? Literally like being a kid in a candy store. Or rather, an adult in a big kid candy store. Met some really cool fellow patrons sitting at the bar. It's just that kind of place, where you can strike up conversations with people and have a nice time. The service is unbelievable. It's just another one of those rare places where they make you feel like family.

Yelp
We saw from their menu online that they had dosas available, so decided to give Whip In a try on a day when we were craving dosas. The place is quite dark on the inside. So after ordering at the counter, we stepped out towards the patio seating. There were very few patrons on the day we visited, but we had to move tables twice because of cigarette smoke blowing our way. Oh well. When the first dosa arrived, my wife was surprised that it wasn't hot, it was lukewarm at best. When the second dosa arrived after a few minutes, it was also similarly lukewarm. I tasted the sambar, and found it rather oily and not particularly well done. I anyway prefer coconut chutney to sambar, so I tried that next. The chutney was fresh, but unfortunately it was too low in salt, and was almost inedible. Thankfully the third chutney, made with tomatoes and onions, was okay; so was the potato stuffing inside the masala dosa. But the overall experience was not compelling enough to bring us back for our next dosa craving day.

Yelp
What a chill vibe! I stopped by during their happy hour with a friend and sat at the bar inside. It is pretty dark inside, but it was too hot to be outside at the time. We got the Pakora and the Chicken Tikka Masala. Both items were delicious, particularly the Pakora! It had great flavors and was perfectly crispy. The Chicken Tikka Masala was also enjoyable, but minimal chicken for the amount of rice and curry.

Yelp
Let me tell you a little story. I use to stop here two decades ago to get my craving for some Samosas since there was no Indian restaurant in South Austin when Taj Palace left the location in the Brodie Oaks area. Lol... True Austinite knows what I'm talking about. Fast forward 20 plus years.... I was planning to meet a friend for lunch. She was coming East, I was coming from Barton Creek Mall and we were both craving Indian food. Whip In came to mind. She had never been and said she passes it all the time but didn't realize what it was. We agreed to meet. WOW!! What a treat! The bartender was super nice and knowledgeable. My friend ordered the Tendori Chicken Kabobs which fell into place of the special diet that she is practicing right now. She quoted... This might be the best Tendori Chicken that I have had in a very long time. I ordered the Tikka Marsala Chicken Curry.... Delicious. The rice could use a little more flavor but the Tikka Marsala was amazing. Nice heat, full of flavor and not too heavy. Not cream based but true tomato curry based. I had left overs and it tasted even better when I had for it for lunch at work a day later. I can't express how much I enjoy my experience. This is a true gem of Old Austin and it warms my heart that it represents why we fell in love with Austin back in the day. A couple of side notes.... Amazing selection of wines and beers to go on their market size. It is very dark but I personally think it adds the charm and they do have an outdoor sitting area. Their selection on tab is amazing. I was looking for the Kombuchi on tab but ended up with the Rose Prosecco on tab.... Sub conscience taking over... Maybe... But damn I enjoyed that mid afternoon treat!!! Overall, you've seen the sign as you go down IH-35 and probably wonder... What's that all about. Get off the highway and take a little trip back in time and experience why they say KEEP AUSTIN WEIRD!!

Yelp
Always a good bet for late night eats. Kitchen open late and they serve delicious and healthy Indian food plus a huge selection of beers, cider, wine and kombucha on tap. Awesome patio too. Friendly service and reasonable prices. Go now!

Yelp
The ambiance is brilliant strong nods to the continence store it once was from retro neon sign to the commercial refrigerators full of beer for take away. . The food brilliant several vegan choices . My flexitarian mates assure the CMT dims on par with ant east-end curry hut and yes this is a high compliment. Enough beer and ales for any taste. Servers are amazingly fast attentive. The parking easy . A first choice

Yelp
Whip in is always a fun place to hang out. I have been here several times because I have a few friends that love this place. It's always dark inside the bar/restaurant area with plenty of table and booth seating. The have happy hour deals from 3-6p but depending on who's at the register they are shady when it comes to honoring prices. On tap they have a variety of beers, a few ciders and a small wine selection. They sell a variety of alcohol in the coolers along the way. This is not authentic Indian food made with quality ingredients. I ordered the lamb Briyani, a side of fries and Samosas. Everything is overpriced which is disappointing! The briyani was good but the portion sizes are soooo small it's a waste of money, honestly. The fries were frozen fries from like H-E-B freezer section, not very tasty and super thin. Samosas were good but under seasoned also over priced... Definitely not my kind of place.
google avatar

Art G.

Yelp
I had ordered a Mango Lassi drink and it didn't taste good - it tasted like the ingredients were spoiled. I asked for a refund after drinking less than 10 percent of the drink The cashier was not willing to offer a $7 refund. I will never come back here again.

Stacey S.

Yelp
The food was amazing! The service was really fast, we got our food in ten to fifteen minutes. The atmosphere was laid back and nice.
google avatar

Cathy L.

Yelp
It's a very interesting restaurant, in that it looks like a convenience store and it actually is inside. You can get a lot of different beers on tap and they have a huge wall of fridges with a great selection of local beers and ciders. Not at all a traditional Indian restaurant. They have a cool and dark interior very much like a standard bar and also an outdoor patio with shaded areas. The food is really good and you order at the bar. Butter Chicken - you can get the butter masala with chicken, paneer, lamb, shrimp. The yellow basmati rice was super good and the dish itself was a good portion Lamb Kebab - comes with a minty refreshing sauce. The lamb was super tender and juicy. Masala Wings - I would love to try more of their fusion Indian food. The wings had a great spice and they came with vegetables with a garlic aioli different from your standard ranch dip. I'm not a big beer or bar person so I probably would dine in again, but would definitely order delivery or take out for the food.
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
South Austin staple. We love the whip in whenever we're stopping off 35 for a draft (amazing selection) or quick bottle of wine.
google avatar

Robin J.

Yelp
Love this place. Interesting, unique brands, and a variety of libations to wet your whistle. Service is a lil "meh" ... no one seems to take much initiative to help you find anything nor checkout once you do. The product is pricey but again, you're paying for some interesting brands that are hard to come by. There's an amazing Indian food restaurant in the back that you'll regret not trying. I was blown away by the deliciousness and worthy of more takeout or delivery orders this winter while heading into hibernation.
google avatar

Tammy D.

Yelp
I ordered some takeout from this place so I can't comment on their service or restaurant but their food was amazing! I got the mild spice leveled butter masala with chicken. The dish contained a small amount of chicken and rice but a lot of the masala. To be fair, the chicken pieces were pretty big pieces but overall the ratio of rice to masala to chicken was a bit disproportionate. I ended up having a lot of masala left over after my meal. Despite this, the flavor of the chicken masala was delicious and the chicken was really well seasoned. I also got the chicken tikka pizza and it was delicious. They gave a good proportion of sauce and toppings to pizza crust ratio and the flavor was really good. The pizza looked a little burnt but it didn't taste burnt nor did it have any burnt-like texture.
google avatar

Yelp
So first off, this review is about the kitchen. I wish there could be a second option to review their Beer Garden, and a third to review their "store" separately, because it is great! Good selection of beers wine and specialty pizzas. Five stars there. Secondly, you should know that Whip In is an Austin favorite by reputation from locals. [So much so that in the madness of the current I-35 "emergency-expansion" construction, (because city council members of past decades have been too ignorant to SERIOUSLY consider the future growth of their city) hundreds of businesses will be wiped off the map due to this, yet I have received insight from family, whom have lived here for decades, that Whip In will be spared from such annihilation]. Here's how this is relevant. I ordered chips and queso, garlic naan, and the lamb tikka masala. I have been in and out of Austin for years, and I can tell you that there are hundreds of places that have WAYYYYY BETTER queso!! AND for cheaper; $10????, this is worth $6, maybe!!! I won't lie, the chips are quite good for their purpose, but the queso is TOTALLY watered down (like seriously, I have never encountered queso that takes hours and hours to congeal. It just RUNS off the chip like a thin liquid, NOT slowly, like it should. AND, it tastes powdery). I think their are some money-saving scheme's happening here. That leads me to the Lamb Tikka Masala. Straight up, i haven't even tasted it yet, Real Talk. But just from looking at the portions served, it is NOT WORTH $16 at all. $12 maybe. This little brown box of rice is only HALF-FILLED! WTF?!?!? REALLY??!! Now to the Lamb Curry itself. We all know that there is a total variance of amounts of things that can be stuffed into these plastic 1/2 pint containers. Mine was 3/4 curry and 1/4 lamb meat. At this point, I HAVE taken a chefs "spoon-taste-test" to the curry and it is a nice flavor. BUT, I ordered the Lamb Curry, and there is not enough lamb to mix with the curry. At this point, my conclusion is I could have gone to trader Joes and bought the same lamb tikka masala yet add TJ's palak paneer, and had just as much an enjoyable experience as eating this! And it must be said, I have shopped at WI at least six times in the last three weeks for beer pizza wine, and there is almost no one there, EVERY SINGLE TIME! So I do not understand how in the world they are staying in business! Sorry Whip In, I like you, but changes need to be made in the kitchen!
google avatar

Kate F.

Yelp
I live close and come here often and have always loved it. 2 weeks ago I got the Chicken Tikka and had the most vicious food poisoning of my life. (It's the only place I are from that week besides home, and I am vegetarian at home so I am confident that the food poisoning came from the dish.) I'll still come back but I hope they run a tighter ship on cleanliness and food contamination.

Shawn T.

Yelp
Love overpriced everything!? Indian food is to be an equalizer; yet it's overpricing like everything else in there. The only reason why this place is still open is because of liquor distribution from the store next door. Why would you ever go to the local brewery that made that beer when you can pay a $2 -$4 premium on it at The Whip in?? This place ruled when it was a grocery store and had an active inside stage. Now it's the 'Price-gouge eclectic beer place'. 10/10 wouldn't recommend. Shame on you. Can't wait to see The Whip-in turn into something else
google avatar

Adriana F.

Yelp
Quality is low, flavors are good, wine and sake for sale there which is nice and better than paying for drinks. Cool casual spot that you might get food poisoning from here and there lol. But I will still keep going every now and then to meet friends or for ambiance of just a hang out spot that offers gluten free options.
google avatar

Tara N.

Yelp
We hadn't been to Whip In since pre-pandemic so we were surprised when we visited and it looked very different. I enjoyed the decor and upgrades! As an Indian myself, I always joke that most Indian places have the same decor. Not the case with Whip In! The outdoor space is fun and I really enjoy the look of the indoor bar. We went an off night but the calendar looked like there are a lot of fun/interesting events. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5: - I needed a little more "umph" in the food. For Indian food, I expect s lot more flavor. - Service was slow and there was only one other person in thr place. Parents: We took our little one in since it was early in the day and didn't think it would have a 'bar' feel. I do think the renovations make it more bar than restaurant so I wouldn't bring her back. There is a changing table in both bathrooms.
google avatar

daveena w.

Yelp
Obsessed with the food menu here. Wide selection of beers as well in a funky ambiance.
google avatar

Mark A.

Yelp
Happily surprised with our experience and meal coming here; I'd gotten food from them (delivered) during the pandemic and although it wasn't bad, I wasn't particularly impressed, but given that it was delivery it probably also wasn't entirely indicative of what they're like when they're fresh. So, happy that I went in this time to try their food; I got their butter chicken and a cider, and it was nice and hot, very flavorful, and nice balance of spice. They have a nice dining area/bar + a shop of beers, ciders, and wine. We really enjoyed the food and it was good pricing; it wasn't busy when we went on a early Thursday evening. Definitely would go again and try some other items on their menu, especially since it's close by

T. D.

Yelp
I liked the dosa but it took so long to get to the table that we weren't even hungry for it anymore. Overall a little pricey for food ($15/dosa) and drinks (about $8 per beer)
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Indian food. Generous portions. I had lamb vindaloo, bhindi masala, aloo gobi, dal and lamb kebobs. Wonderfully spiced and flavorful. Whip in has gone through a lot of changes in recent years. I think they've hit a home run with this new menu. Update: the chana masala and samosas are outstanding. After several meals at Whip In, I've come to the conclusion that their Indian food is the best in Austin.

Benicio C.

Yelp
If you want to spend $15 on 5 tiny pieces of chicken tikki masala then this is your place. Also it's not very good would not recommend just go somewhere else and save ur money
google avatar

Quin T.

Yelp
The first time my husband suggested we stop at Whip In for naan, I was like, we're going to get Indian food at a convenience store?! Little did I know the joke was on me because although from the service road it looks like a typical 7-11, it is nothing but. Actually, upon entering, the area showcasing spirits is very small. They have an entire bar area dedicated to beer on tap and Indian food, as well as an outside area for performances. We have tried their naan as well as their kabobs and really enjoyed both.
google avatar

Rafael W.

Yelp
Great bar with a ton of drink options. It does have a dive feel to it. However instead of your normal bar food they have delicious Indian food. Must try if you are in the area.
google avatar

Rashaka B.

Yelp
Surprisingly had a great time while visiting this place. The inside ambiance is nothing like the neighborhood. The food was quick and the drinks were nice. The service was over the top. This is definitely worth a try if you are nearby.

Saina M.

Yelp
The ambience is perfect, Food is very upscale and deliberately crafted with incredible flavors served hot and fresh right out of the kitchen, 10/10 for the perfectly made crispy Masala Dosa with various chutneys which is a must try and the best so far I have ever had, this place is a hidden gem and I definitely recommend this to anyone.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
This is a unique locally grown spot that is worth a visit in South Austin. Prior to the pandemic a popular spot to catch bands on the outdoor stage, not too sure about the music situation right now. The Whip In is a corner beverage depot with a quality selection of craft wine and beer. If I may add, a very quality selection of wine and beer. If you want to expand your palette and try a new craft beer or wine, def stop in. Very large selection of chilled rose, which I found impressive. The selection of beers by the glass is also impressive. This is a very cool spot to come in and meet friends, and grab a pint. The Whip In is also an Indian restaurant. The quality of the food is not a 5, but a 4. If you are looking for great Indian food there are better options, but the overall experience here and what it offers is above average and worth a visit.

James B.

Yelp
We had a great time and a good meal. Just stopped to grab a 6er of local beer and it smelled amazing. We changed our dinner plans and went back for dinner. Seemed like a really great selection of draft and can beer and the food and service was quick and easy. Recommend the Loaded Nachos, Butter Masala and Electric Jellyfish Hazy IPA.
google avatar

Connie P.

Yelp
To start, I adore indian food. It is such a cute place but the food was below average. To start we came on a tuesday, early afternoon. There was maybe 6 other patrons in there. They had r&b jams blaring, to be expected for a hipster hideout, I guess. The gentleman that took our order said that he could not make a korma with paneer even though that option was available on the menu. I ordered saag paneer instead. It took almost an hour to get the food. The samosas were great. The basmati rice was very dry. The paneer was so dry and almost inedible, The naan was toasted to the point that it was unenjoyable to dip and bite into. I would not recommend and it was quite overrated.

Madison W.

Yelp
High quality authentic Indian food, come to Kushel, Abdullah, or Barsha for exceptional service! The beer is crisp and the environment is ELETRIC. My glass is never empty here. Come for a beer ,leave with a smile and full belly.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Love love love whip in!! I always get the nachos...they're the best nachos in ATX!!! Also love the beer selection!!! Whip in isn't like a fancy place, it's more chill atmosphere.
google avatar

Jeremy D.

Yelp
Are you hungry and upset leaving empty-handed after waiting 45 minutes? "Oh well" will essentially be the response. Ordered/paid for pick-up. No food or even an acknowledgement really of something gone wrong. I think it's a management issue - just a waitress and cook were there to shrug and say maybe someone else took it. Mistakes happen, but the lack of reaction leaves me baffled i.e. offer empathy or refund or comp... Sorry, but y'all lost a neighborhood regular!
google avatar

Lindsie A.

Yelp
Great Indian food! Service is going to the register and ordering. Ambiance was fun. Great lunch.
google avatar

JR L.

Yelp
Went here for a work meeting and I truly enjoyed the environment. Pretty relaxed and helpful bartenders and servers. It has a decent selection of both food and beer. I ordered a chicken tikka masala curry along with two beers - Belgian ale and a wheat. The CTM was a decent size and quality for the $12 tag. I'll definitely come back again to relax with friends and my doggo in the future. I thought the fridges in the back full of beer was pretty cool. TLDR - decent food and draft beer selection - bunch of freezers with lots of beers and shelves of wines - cool music - had one TV inside from what I could see

Marsha M.

Yelp
Dear Lort, why was it so cold during my visit to Austin when I stopped into Whip In? On an average sweltering Austin day/night I can imagine Whip In being the essential local spot for a quick beer or 5. With a great selection of beers on tap, along with extensive coolers for carry out, this place seems just great. Apparently they have food too? Whip In should be the norm for corner stores/bars everywhere. Kudos fellas
google avatar

Neil O.

Yelp
This might be one of the hardest reviews I've ever made. I have come to the Whip In for years (I still remember playing a show here when I was a kid in my father's band and having one of best and most interesting Indian fusion chicken fried steaks of my life) and always appreciated (and still do) what they're doing. But the prices are just getting too damn high. As of the past week, every single beer on tap has risen by a price of roughly $3 on average; essentially the base price for any beer on tap STARTS at $8, and without a doubt that's the highest I've seen at any establisbment in Austin, and I have been to an uncountable number. I also had their $12.99 Kurma (also known as Korma in some resturaunts) and it was good, but more like a $8.99 Korma at Tejis as fas as quantity and depth of flavor goes. Make no mistake, this is an indesputed historic establishment that's likely also struggling with COVID and I'll still support it, but seeing these changes is just disheartening and it's getting harder and harder for me to justify still stopping in on the weekend.

Yelp
Great selection of local and international beer and wine. The food is fresh, and consistently meets expectations. It's a great environment.

Yelp
An absolute gem of a spot nearest Travis Heights. Tranquil little spot to vibe with good friends and enjoy a brew or two. The food, every item, is superior to any Indian cuisine throughout the city. The paneer makes love to your taste buds as if the two were newly weds honeymooning throughout New Delhi. The cheesy naan is as fluffy as clouds atop Kangchenjunga Peak with taste as perfect as your tastebuds will allow.

Yelp
This place was not at all what I expected. The name and location along the ribs of I-35 conjure an image of a convenience store, with maybe a gas pump or two outside. Well, it does have the convenience store aspect, with walls of refrigerated cases along the back. But the front section has a wine bar, a restaurant with beer on tap, booths and tables, and a stage, where bands play several nights a week. That's what brought me here. The wall calendar says they have regular activities like Trivia Night, so you may get a different experience here on different days or nights. The menu is unexpected, as well. It's mainly Indian food. The garlic Naan bread comes buttered with fresh basil, and I could eat a basket by myself if I weren't trying to be polite and share. The French fries were greasy and over cooked, however, so I don't recommend those. We were there late night, so we didn't have the bandwidth to try anything else on our first visit. Parking is available in the tiny front lot, slightly larger back lot, and along the street beside the building.

Yelp
Really disappointing tonight at the Whip In. I think it was an off night? First off, the draught board which is usually full up to 70+ was very scarce, so not sure what was going on there. We ordered the chicken vindaloo and chicken shawarma. I was confused when our food came out for 2 reasons: 1) I wasn't expecting a wrap and fries for the shawarma- just was expecting rice since the menu didn't describe it as a wrap, but whatever - my bad 2) it came in takeout containers with only one set of silverware (plastic) I went back inside to ask for another set and also asked if why (out of curiosity) the presentation had changed to takeout containers. I was told "it's a covid thing". I tried to explain nicely that I understood - but have only been in Austin since covid and have come every week or so since January, always with plates etc. She repeated, seeming annoyed with the question, that it was a covid thing, shoved me two mini plates and some silverware and walked away. Ok, cool! I'm only giving a 3 because I have been here 6-7 times, always with a great experience. Tonight was a 1 star for service, but honestly food was below par as well. Leaving a sad customer :(

Yelp
I was shocked this was not listed in the top convenience stores in Austin. Where else can you grab a cigar, a snack and a drink and visit with the most eclectic crowd in Austin. If that's not convenient, what is?

Yelp
Meh it was okay, average/ subpar Indian food. I ordered chicken korma and my chicken was super dry. It was okay. They also don't have the goat burger anymore.

Yelp
Lowkey but super yummy. It's a really chill place to talk and catch up with people while having amazing Gujarati food. I got the lamb biryani and lamb samosa and would highly recommend.

Yelp
Food wasn't great. Paneer was very hard and tough. Butter chicken was just ok. Naan was very good. Beer was very good. They have a lot of beers.

Yelp
I ordered a to-go meal tonight via Postmates, and when I went to pick it up, I was met with extremely rude and disrespectful behavior by one of the bartenders. Upon arrival, I asked where I needed to pick up my food, and I was pointed to a shelf. The bag had my first and middle initial, but not my last name and was labeled UberEats. I asked them to find my order. With some back and forth, it was determined that my order had been mislabeled. Mistakes happen, and I understand that. As I'm trying to sort this out with a female bartender and a cook, the other bartender, a tall burly man with a beard, a Marlboro hat and a camouflage shirt rudely shoved the bag of food at me, cutting me off, and said, "this is yours" and turned around and walked off. I supported this business at the beginning of COVID by shopping in their makeshift grocery store, and even buying t-shirts. I only recently acquired a taste for Indian food, so I was excited to try it tonight. I will never be back. I was also told they don't have a manager around, nobody is in charge, and as I searched online for a way to contact anybody running this place, I came up empty.

Yelp
One of the worst place I ever been to. Worst food, culturally offensive atmosphere and worst management.
