The 15 Best Fried Chicken Spots In Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Chicken and fish are the specialties at this soul-food restaurant in Cedar Park, but you’ll also find waffle plates, pork chops, shrimp and grits, and buttery glazed yams. Grab a Coke to pair with it all if you want to be boring, or choose from one of the many Kool-Aids on display. The chicken tenders are some of the best you’ll find in a 10-mile radius, with sides that are just as exciting." - nicolai mccrary

Whip My Soul - Review - Anderson Mill - Austin - The Infatuation

"Show up during lunch hours nearly any day of the week and you’ll probably see a short line of people waiting for massive trays of fried chicken and fish at Whip My Soul, a soul food restaurant in a strip mall on the Cedar Park border. Chicken and fish are the specialties here, but you’ll also find waffle plates, pork chops, shrimp and grits, plus staple sides like hush puppies, cheese grits, and glazed yams. Grab a drink cup and fill up at the soda fountain (if you want to be boring) or choose from one of the many Kool-Aids on display. When it’s busy, and the food is fryer-to-table fresh, you’ll be met with some of the crispiest and tender chicken strips, wings, and catfish you’ll find in North Austin. But show up during off-hours, and there’s a decent chance your tenders have spent a little bit too much time sitting in a warming pan. If you’re not sure where to start, get a sampler platter with a side of sweet glazed yams and cheezy mac. And prepare to bring a lot of food home, because the portions here are no joke. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary" - Nicolai McCrary

Excellent!!!! Best soul experienced in Austin. Fish superb! Yams, yes ma’am. And those collards made me wanna holler. Simply amazing. Let me point out another important fact, the customer service. Exquisite! I made an order 15 minutes before closing and I mean EVERYBODY was awesome. From greeting to eating, nothing short of phenomenal. Thank you.

Google
This was my 2nd time dining here. It was my mother and sisters birthday and they wanted to celebrate at Whip my soul. They do not take reservations but when my sister got there and told them we had 11 people coming to eat, the staff was amazing! They set the tables to accommodate us, thank you whip my soul family ❤️ for making my mom and sister day special. Don't sleep on the restaurant, the food is yummy, we'll seasoned and freshly cooked. We will be going back, if you haven't been I highly recommend.

Google
The atmosphere was great, but the new young woman working the front desk provided extremely poor customer service. She came across as rude and entitled, which set a negative tone for the visit. I decided to try this place based on multiple recommendations from my followers, but unfortunately I won’t be returning. The egg rolls were good, but the rest of the food lacked seasoning and tasted pre-cooked and reheated upon ordering. Overall, a disappointing experience

Google
Saturday noon was crowded! And people kept coming. I mean why not! I thought I had the best chicken wings and they have the best fried catfish and best chicken wings! Oxtail was ok but so tender! They gave my friend a bday cake because it was a weekend of celebration! Cool decorations and the kool aid choice was so happy! The sides need to be mentioned—-collard greens and the fried okra were so divine! Worth the price! Authentic food in ATX—-yeah! Support local businesses!!!

Google
I ordered Shrimp with Fried Okra and Mac and Cheese. I ENJOYED my plate to the fullest. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can't wait to find a reason to go back. Do I even need a reason? And don't. Lol. The vibe was amazing. The environment was clean. Service was friendly. It's always hard to find soul food, for me anyway. Now I got a spot!

I'm in town visiting for the weekend. Originally, I had planned to try a BBQ restaurant but the line was wrapped too long for my stomach. I came upon this restaurant and saw shrimp and grits and was sold. A small hole in the wall but very cute and quaint. We were immediately greeted with a friendly smile and warm welcomes when we walked through the door. After we ordered, wait was not long before our order was ready. They have a wall painted with sayings... "Y'all ain't ready. Great soul food." And that wall speaks truth!!!! We weren't ready!!! We ordered the pork chop, wing and catfish sample platter with fried okra and mac and cheese along with the shrimp and grits. FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! Every bite had so much flavor. Everything was crisp and NOT oily at all! The mac and cheese is prob the best mac and cheese I've ever had! The gravy that came with the grits was the absolute finishing touch! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND ALL TO TRY!!! I'm so glad I decided not to stand in line for bbq!! This will definitely be a restaurant I will visit everytime I come to town!

Google
Lord have mercy, this restaurant is FIRE! TOP notch soul food ; some of the best I've ever had. The oxtails are to die for, the catfish was banging, the peach cobbler was slammin and sweet tea was just like I like it...SWEET. I wish I could bottle all of this up and take back with me to Colorado Springs, CO. I may have to visit one more time before I depart...FIRE!!!

Google
I was looking for a new place to try with a friend when I came across this place and I knew I had to try it. It exceeded expectations. The chicken was over the top incredible, the waffle fries were nice and crunch, not too crunchy and not too soft, truly just right. Above all, the Mac and cheese was best in town I’ve had so far. It was fresh homemade and it was noticeable. It enhanced the rest of the food and experience. I highly recommend Whip My Soul to anyone looking for a great locally owned restaurant with stellar food.

Michael B.

Yelp
I love the kool-aide variety. The pork chops were so tender, and the greens were so good you don't have to season them.

Jason W.

Yelp
You wont find better soul food anywhere in austin. Period. Everything is excellent.owner is pretty cool too. Great atmosphere.

Yelp
Recently visited Whip My Soul and had a wonderful dining experience. It was busy because it was during a conference but the staff was very attentive and helpful with suggestions for items to try and everything. I ordered the wings and shrimp platter, which was quite good. The stars of the show were the sides! The cornbread was amazing, and the sides of mac and cheese and yams were delicious as well. I also tried the collard green egg rolls, which were different but very good. I wish I had noticed the oxtail egg roll option before checking out! My friend got the oxtail platter and said she really enjoyed it. The overall consensus from everyone who tried was that they'd come back if in the area.

Yelp
Visited for the first time yesterday with a group of friends. If it wasn't for them I would have left and went elsewhere. Especially after waiting in a line for about 20 minutes, only to get to the cashier and find out they didn't have shrimp and grits which was the only thing I wanted to order. No grits? Seriously? Terrible first impression. I ended up ordering a drink only. Had to wait about 5 minutes for the ice machine to be filled as there was no ice in it when I tried to fill my cup. Grape soda was tasty. Stayed and chatted with friends, they had sides they were too full to even taste so they passed them to me. Nibbled a bit on a the greens which were really good. Tasted some sweet potatoes that I didn't care for, they were crazy sweet, cloying almost. Hushpuppies were solid. The ambience was cute, we watched some of the NBA finals while we socialized for a bit. I'm not sure if I'd go out of my way to return sadly, I really wanted to enjoy this place.

Yelp
Nicest people work here. Fantastic chicken, especially right out of the frier. Nice homemade hot sauce a must. Portions on the sides are a bit small....but love their yams, Mac n cheese and greens. Collard greens egg rolls interesting. Like the concept, just felt they were missing something. If you get the chance to go sunday after church traffic sure to be a fashion show

Yelp
In the Austin area so we thought we would try something new in our list. We are not disappointed! The line was kind of long for 3 pm but we felt that was a good sign. The restaurant was full. You place your order at the counter then find a seat until they call you. There was a sign that said no fried sides on the weekends but there were plenty of other options. Hubby got the oxtails with rice, Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. I got the sampler plate which was a piece of fish, wing, and pork chop with greens and cabbage. They told us it would be 45 minutes to a hour and it took a little over a hour so grab a drink and be prepared to wait. They have TV's to keep you occupied if needed. The food was really good! The star of my sample plate was the fish. The piece was small but the seasoning and flavor was great. The pork chop and wing didn't disappoint either. The cabbage has a different flavor to it but I still liked it. My hubby was in love with his oxtails. They were good! Don't miss out on this good soul food if you are in the area. They have dessert and koolaide!

Yelp
Absolutely Delicious, homemade and fresh. The wings are a must. They are the larger wings and there are no words that will justify the taste that will leave you drooling. The mac & cheese, yams, and greens are my personal favorite. My mom loves the fish and waffles. My nephew; wings. Everyone in my family has their personal favorite. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The red velvet chocolate chip cookies are scrumptious. They also have a caramel cake that tastes exactly like my grandmother's that rotates in with strawberry and yellow. The frosting on all the cakes is outstanding...sweet but also light and refreshing which doesn't seem possible. Somehow they make it happen. The dining set up works perfectly to where you order, get a table, then food. My ATX visitors always ask to go to Whip My Soul. My Nephew said he dreams about the wings and is moving to TX one day. The owners are friendly and happy to share the history of cooking in their family in Chicago. I love everything about Whip My Soul and I am positive you will too!

Yelp
3.9/5 - This is such a bittersweet rating bc the food is good. This was my second visit on a Sunday afternoon. I wasn't worried it was busy. Those are usually good signs! You enter and order at the counter with open seating. For the size of restaurant they have decent amount seating. Two plate and two dessert could easily run you $50+ here. There was an advised 25 min wait for our togo order. Once again for the time of visit wasn't worried about that. However, our order was somehow missed which resulted in twice the wait. Disappointing point part only one person really took action to correct and one meals meat was colder than the other. Would have appreciated both entree being made fresh. Food is good but not sure 1hour wait good. I'd love to see the establishment become little more organized with their food assembly for more efficient experience.

Yelp
Absolutely my favorite soul food place in Austin! Well worth my 30 minute commute from Round Rock! I have never had anything that I didn't like! They have a wide variety of sides and main courses too choose from! From oxtails, to shrimp, to fried cabbage n dressing (weekends only for cabbage n dressing) and several flavored kool-aids! The food is seasoned and reminds you of your grandmother's cooking! The ambiance is very chill with relaxing lights and low RnB music in the background! You will not regret it! This is a family owned business, so you will see the same faces!

Yelp
### Review of Whip My Soul Restaurant I recently dined at Whip My Soul restaurant and was thoroughly impressed by their 2 Wings, 2 Fish, and 2 Tenders Platter. The fried catfish was a standout, with a fluffy, light texture and a super crispy coating that truly melted in your mouth. While the tenders were decent taste-wise, I found them to be lacking compared to the exceptional catfish. The wings were nothing short of perfection, cooked to a golden crisp on the outside while retaining an incredibly juicy interior The side dishes were a delightful surprise - the red beans and rice with sausage were very flavorful, and the cornbread was a perfect complement to the meal. I am eager to return and explore more of their menu offerings. The customer service at Whip My Soul was commendable, and the atmosphere was pleasant with great music adding to the overall dining experience. However, I would suggest that management discourage employees from lingering around the front register; during my visit, I observed an employee resting their head on the counter which detracted from an otherwise positive impression. In conclusion, Whip My Soul offers delicious food with standout items like their fried catfish, accompanied by excellent sides. With a few minor improvements in employee conduct, this restaurant has the potential to become a go-to spot for flavorful meals in a welcoming setting.

Yelp
This place is a vibe. I miss my good soul food spots in California and happened to stumble upon this on Yelp. It has wonderful Yelp reviews, so I was eager to give it a try. They play the JAMS in here for starters. They have an assortment of sodas and Kool Aid. I ordered the 2 piece wings with shrimp, which comes with two sides. I got yams and Mac and cheese for my sides and we also ordered extra sides of cornbread and hush puppies. I really wanted to try their buttery dinner rolls and dessert, but they celebrated their two year anniversary and we came within the last hour of them closing so both options were sold out. The chicken and shrimp were perfectly seasoned and went well with the hot sauce--although, they were both amazing without any condiments, too! All the sides were cooked to perfection. Food was great, but I would say their service sets them apart and is exceptional. I believe it was the owner who went around several times and checked to make sure everyone was satisfied. Before that he was in the kitchen area working hard with his team to serve up the food. A wonderful establishment, run by wonderful people. I highly recommend this restaurant--can't wait to go back to try other things!

Yelp
So yummy! We went midweek at around 5:15 and there was no line but keep in mind that weekends can be quite busy and they have a more limited menu to keep the line moving. This is a walk up and order at counter situation. No table service. They call your name to go and pick up at counter when it's ready. Everything was delicious. For me, the yams were the star of the show. I could eat those all day long. Perfectly firm slices, cooked just right, not mushy at all. The collard greens were yummy too. I wanted to get the baked chicken but they had run out so I got the fried shrimp. Very good! My husband had the chicken tenders and loved them. Highly recommend! Will be back.

Yelp
YUM YUM YUM!!! Been trying to make it up to Whip My Soul for a while now and finally had a reason to go on a Saturday recently. Glad we did! I got the three wing plate and my BF got the 2 tender, 2 fish plate. The fish is catfish and it was excellent (as was everything else). The Mac and cheese was a standout - perfect southern-type mac that was very creamy and cheese-forward without being watery. Okra was just like you'd expect it at a true blue southern establishment. The staff was very nice and even when our hushpuppies were going to take a few more minutes to come out fresh, they made sure we knew and got them. Really loved the hot sauce here - it goes VERY well with the wings & gives just a little extra umph! if you like. There was a line when we arrived almost to the door, but it moved fairly quickly and then we just sat down at a table & waited for them to call us. Place was packed on a Saturday at 6. Parking is for the whole shopping area so plenty there & seating was tight but made quickly available. Both my BF and I had leftovers to heat the next day because the portions are very good. Will be back!!

Yelp
My girlfriends couldn't stop raving about this spot around the corner from our neighborhood on 620. We went for lunch last Friday and wow was it good! I would love to try more things next time i visit! We all got the Buffalo chicken sandwich with waffle fries. The fries chicken was the ultimate comfort food and im currently pregnant so anything saucy, Buffalo or anything with a kick is perfect right now! The waffle fries were better than any other I've had. Some things I'd like to try next time are their collard greens, Mac n cheese, and cornbread. We will definitely be coming back for another lunch

Yelp
So many reviews! In town for a conference, this popped up for a dinner choice. My coworkers opted for something closer but they missed out. 500 reviews and almost 5 stars, how can it be true? I stayed an extra day and checked it out myself. Seriously the best I've had. Service was amazing, family biz with the kids at the counter and I assume the owner who did rounds checking on tables. This 2-2-2 platter really is for 2. I dug in deep but still ended up with togo including my sides of fries and Mac. Superb seasoning with a hint of sugar. The chicken, fish and tender were perfect. One of the best Mac's I've ever had. Off-brand drinks but still Diet Coke. Super clean inside, the staff was always busy sweeping and keeping it tidy. Truly exceptional, this is the real deal!
google avatar

Kristi H.

Yelp
I now understand why this place has sooo many 5 star reviews. Everything was soooo amazing. Plenty of parking. We walked in and were greeted by smiles. While looking at the menu we were asked if any questions. My only complaint is why were there soooo many good options on the menu and I couldn't choose them all. I got the wing dinner with Mac and yams. Them yams make you say ohhhweeee! Everything else was amazing too. My bf got the platter with wings fish and tenders with Mac and greens. AWESOME. We also got cobbler, cornbread, and seafood Mac rolls. SUPERB. If ever back in Austin, I will return again
google avatar

Vandesha L.

Yelp
I always want to support black owned and operated business and I will continue. To leave an honest review this place has so much work to do starting with the customer service. When we walked in the cashier was eating what looked like black eyed peas. We never received a greeting or anything (likely because her mouth was full with food). It seems as if they don't give her a break. I placed my order but felt rushed. I had questions since the menu just says a name for the food but doesn't tell you what's in it. They have what is called Mean Greens and I was asking what's in it, the response was "just regular collard greens"...then why are we calling it "MEAN"??? I also ordered FRIED cabbage and received regular boiled cabbage. In my experience with soul food the greens are cooked with some type of meat in them and fried cabbage is done in a frying pan until tender, not soft and mushy. Needless to say these sides were nothing to brag about. The chicken was EXCELLENT, cooked perfectly and seasoned well. I was a little disturbed that the staff found it appropriate to argue with a customer on the floor and the owner seemed to just lounge around the dining area while on the phone. At one point he approached a table of young guys to inform he was the owner. This was interesting because as the line got longer and the cashier was no where to be found he never jumped behind the register or even thought to engage customers while they were waiting. The kitchen manager who I assume is the wife of the owner was very rude and dismissive to a table of older women. My friend ordered fish and it was over cooked and the Cheesy Mac was dry and taste like sliced cheese was used. She wanted to send it back but after the managers interaction with other guest she decided not to even mention it and we decided to leave. Again, the chicken was on point. I don't think it's a place I'd dine in but I'd order chicken to go. The establishment is clean and plenty of parking but the service is horrible! Because they are family owned and operated it is obvious they do what they want. No need to make a complaint because they don't seem to care. I'm leaving 3 stars for the chicken.

Yelp
Pros: Great fried food! Cons: Order at the counter. Line gets pretty long. Food can take awhile if they're having to cook some more. If there's no seating, you'll just have to wait for someone to finish. Not cheap. SAMPLE PLATTER; 2 WINGS, 2 FISH, 2 TENDERS $24.99 - a lot of food for 2 people, but we finished it all except the yams (comes w/ 2 sides). All 3 fried items were very good. Batter is crispy and not oily. 4 SHRIMP, 2 FISH $19.50 - my mom ordered this. Shrimp was okay. Fish was great. CHEEZY MAC was very good (but oily at the bottom) SWEET GLAZED YAMS were okay. too much glaze/syrup. It's better if you take out the sliced yams from the syrup.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere and decent food. Good service and a variety of selections however; fried sides aren't available during the weekend. Enjoy your food there, it's better hot and fresh. I had leftovers that didn't taste as good once reheated.
google avatar

Caryn N.

Yelp
Today we had a pretend lunch. I say this, for one reason, we're never able to finish all of the two in one setting. I literally ate the shrimp in one wing and a little bit of the size. It's always good to come in and visit and over all the food is pretty consistent. The house is always nice and I love chatting with her! if you've had a long week and feel like you've been whipped, go ahead and get a plate at WHIP MY SOUL.

Yelp
As I lay writing this review, it finally came to me! "Whip My Soul", I get it. The name at first eluded me but, yes, now I get it. My soul, the inner parts of me, my very being was whipped by the deliciousness that was presented before me. Although I have a gluten intolerance, as a foodie, sometimes I got to risk it and I'm glad I did. I went staple, 3 wing combo with greens and candied yams. DELICIOUS DELICIOUS DELICIOUS! The wings were well seasoned and the perfect size. They could have been a tad more crispy but overall a great wing. The greens were tender and well flavored. Excellent greens to me require no hot sauce and these did not. And baby..... the candied yams were almost as good as my great grandmas. They melted in my mouth. The red beans and rice had good flavor, the beans were slightly under cooked but still pretty good. My husband ordered the shrimp Mac n Cheese egg roll, which he salivated over. The egg roll had a nice crunch. The Mac n Cheese was creamy and cheesy and the shrimp was a nice welcomed addition. The waffle was good. Had a nice presence of cinnamon and vanilla. I like my waffle a bit crispy, it was missing that but still buttery and really good. What topped it all was the service. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. The owners acknowledged each in our party. Our food came up pretty quick considering it was 7 of us. And the staff regularly came to our tables to clean and ensure our needs were met. And the cherry on the top was when the owner brought us a complimentary slice of their infamous Carmel cake because he knew we were out of town visitors. Again top notch service. If you're in the area don't miss this hidden gem!
google avatar

Angela L.

Yelp
This place had the friendliest staff! There was a lot of options to choose from. I ended up with the sampler platter with 2 tenders, 2 wings, 2 fish and it came with 2 sides that I chose: mac n cheese and waffles fries. The wings were my favorite part between the meats. It was big and flavorful. The tenders were juicy and big! Bigger than Chick-fil-A tenders. The fries were crunchy and the Mac n cheese was so cheesey! Look at the pull in photos! I'll definitely come back here. They had koolaid of different colors! Red and purple are my favorite~

Yelp
Where to start with this place? I will get to the food, but the first thing to call out is the people. The service is second to none. The owners are some of the most welcoming and friendly people I've ever met in any restaurant. They care about their customers, and are passionate about serving the best food possible. Ok to get to the visits, yes multiple. Each year I come to Austin at least once for about a week. After I was introduced to this place last year, it's now my first stop. Don't grab a taco at the airport, don't stop for BBQ, don't even stop at the hotel to drop bags off do yourself a favor and come straight here. You will not regret it. Location is in a small plaza of shops, easy to get in and out of, plenty of parking. I know Austin is known for food, but the simplicity and flavor being served here is incredible. The type of place you wish every town had. During my 2 visits this past week I pretty much had the same thing, I'm certain I could have ate it every single day and been just as happy on day 1. Flavorful tenders, flakey well seasoned fish with a light breading, or wings with the perfect amount of crunch. When it comes to the sides my go to's are the yams and hushpuppies. I always regret not ordering a second order of yams to go, they are that good. Everything I've had has exceeded expectations. Look forward to next year already. Thank you for your hospitality and passion. Here's to many more anniversary celebrations for your restaurant.

Yelp
Everything is made fresh and so delicious! And they have huge portions. This Soul food restaurant is easy to miss, but very popular. We were greeted enthusiastically by the owner and given menus so we could sit down and look over everything before we ordered at the counter. We decided on the chicken gizzards, and the three tender plate with Fried okra and hush puppies. We also ordered the collard green eggrolls and two buttered rolls. We got two drinks as well and waited for the iced tea open. (unsweetened) to be brewed. Our food came out as it got ready, so the chicken tenders and sides came out first, followed soon by the gizzards and then, the collard greens eggrolls and buttered rolls. Everything was so hot and fresh and tasty! I have rarely tried gizzards, so, my friend had me try one. It tasted good, but it was not my favorite simply because of the chewiness. She loved them and said they were wonderful! Fresh made, hot, and tasty. My chicken tenders were wonderful, but very filling. Each tender was rather large and I got full quickly. I ended up bringing home two tenders, but I did eat my collard, green eggroll and a lot of okra. They were so so good. we want to go back on the weekend when they have their special dishes like fried cabbage, and cornbread dressing. The staff was so friendly and helpful, and we look forward to visiting them again.

Yelp
10/10 We are visiting from Charlotte here for Afrotech. We have been looking at foods to try and this was on my list. So glad I made the drive. The atmosphere and music felt great. Service was fast and extremely friendly and welcoming. Now let's get to the food!! We tried a sampler; wings and fish which came with 2 sides. Mac & cheese and greens. And a lemon cake on the side Wings: fried to perfection, crispy, and loads of flavor 10/10 (hubby said best wings he ever had) Catfish: fries to a crisp, batter perfect and delicious 10/10 Mac & cheese: cheesy and hot 8.5/10 Greens: 10/10 A must if you are in town!!!

Yelp
The chicken tenders and waffle are outstanding! I mean just phenomenally delicious! The chicken is seasoned so well it has a reddish tint to it without being too spicy. It allows the full flavor to come through! The waffle is another level of fluffy. It can hold so much syrup without becoming soggy OR you can add just a little for a lighter fluffier waffle. The Mac and shrimp egg roll is to die for. The combination was off putting when we ordered it, but after we received it and ate it we did a 180. They were fantastic!!! I would have posted photos but we ate it too fast! 11/10 stars!

Yelp
The chicken choices are only wings or tenders. They have pork chops and some kind of fried fish which I assumed to be catfish. The chicken wings were fried to perfection, crispy light crust and tender and juicy inside. I was skeptical about the price of the 3-wing plate but the sides were ample and the wings were large and meaty. The mean greens were collard greens expertly seasoned and tender. I was disappointed that they did not have vinegar to go with them but they were delicious. The okra was fried to perfection and nice and crispy as well. The red beans and rice were also seasoned very well. The sides are very large. All the drinks were generic, even the carbonated ones. I always have water, so I don't know how they tasted but there were a lot of colors and flavors. I noticed that the condiments were generic as well. They had brand name ketchup bottles on the tables but I saw her refilling them from a large jug of restaurant generic ketchup. They also offered Tabasco and a no-name buffalo sauce. There's maple flavored syrup for the waffles. If you like soul food, you will not be disappointed. But if you don't like plain greens, bring your own vinegar!

If you're gonna do soul food in Austin, this place is legit. There's a real void for this type of food in this city and Whip My Soul is a welcome respite for those seeking calm waters.

Yelp
The food here tastes like it's made with love. Glad to have found this gem in Austin. Chicago-style soul food that's slap ya mama good. Everything was well seasoned and fried crispy while retaining all the juices. When I split the sizable chicken tenders, there were juices running out. The interior is reminiscent of other soul food restaurants I've been to where the priority is substance over style, but the area is pristine and the food is delicious. There is no table service. This is a spot where you place your order at the counter, pay, and pick your order up from the counter. Everything is delicious. But if you're getting tenders, be sure to ask for the Chicago mild sauce.

Yelp
Excellent! Left wanting more! Not a huge fan of catfish but decent. So much flavor. Will be back again for sure. Not a place if you're trying to watch the carbs and be healthy.

Yelp
I had a solid 5 star experience at Whip My Soul! I almost never come up to North Austin, so when I happened to be in the area on a Sunday morning, I decided to swing by. I got there around 30 minutes before they opened so I sat in my car like a stalker in the parking lot (there's ample parking btw) and waited for their doors to open. I was the first customer of the day. I was greeted warmly by everyone. The playlist was on point, so I already knew I was in for a treat. I ordered the waffle and three wings plate and a drink. They had all kinds of colorful Koolaid on tap. I sat at one of the many tables and waited for my food to come out. I timed it - it only took 18 minutes. They brought my food over to me just as Ginuwine's song "Changes" began playing over the loudspeakers. "My whole life has changed...." he crooned, as I took my first bite of the chicken and waffles. And baybeeeee let me tell you, that was the most seasoned plate of food I have had in my entire 3 years living in Austin. Delectable. Delicious. Deep fried chicken goodness. This place is now at the top of my list of "places to take people when they visit from out of town." Bravo, Whip My Soul. Great service. Amazing food. Perfect music selection. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Delicious! After one bite, I asked my husband when we can take another road trip to eat here. I had the three wings and cabbage and Mac and cheese. My husband had the pork chop and the same sides. We both had corn bread. Everything was among the best we've ever had.

Yelp
I'm from New Orleans so my standard of elite soul food is high. Whip My Soul is close! But no cigar. However, do not misinterpret this, the food is very, very good and is the best soul food I've encountered in Austin (Cedar Park) so far. The Kool Aid was good too. I wish they offered potato salad. But the food came out hot and fresh. Do know this place can get packed fast and for good reason. 1.25 for one dinner roll seemed a bit much however. The waffle fries were really good though. The music playlist (old school R&B) was great too. Love seeing black institutions thrive in Austin. I will be back.

Yelp
I'm mad at myself for waiting almost two years to try Whip My Soul. Today we finally came here for lunch and can honestly say we found our new home. The owners and staff were all super nice, after all they know they're serving amazing food all day. I cannot imagine anyone ever complaining here. We had the sample plate with wings, fish, and tenders; that was a trifecta made in heaven. Sides wise, we had the yams, mac & cheese, and greens. All three top shelf quality. The mac & cheese put all others to shame. All these bbq spots in town offer sides that are bland compared to Whip My Soul. Don't sleep on the waffle. I'm a huge waffle fan and lately been missing Roscoe's. The waffle came out buttery and ready to go. A lot of magic in that batter and I would easily order it if they changed their prices to $100 a waffle. I judge a place by the attitude and ambiance before food. We felt welcomed and everyone was super friendly. Plus everyone eating was clearly enjoying their meals too, not a frown in sight. Glad we finally tried Whip My Soul and look forward to many more meals to come.

Yelp
Best soul food in Austin. They're always packed because the food is always good. Not many places in Austin can top this. One of the best around.

Yelp
Been trying to find some amazing soul food on the Austin area for over 10yrs and this one is it!! Ordered the 4 shrimp, 2 fish platter with mean greens, cheez Mac, and cornbread. Everything was bangin! Started with the Mac and it was very cheezy, velvety texture, seasoned very very well. The greens were well seasoned also and packed so much flavor. The cornbread was nice, crumbly, flavorful. Fish had a nice light batter and the shrimp also. Nice and crunchy. The music was that 90's R&B and they had the game on one of the TVs so nice spot to relax. Service was quick and it was getting quite packed already at 1115a (they open at 11a). I waited maybe 10mins for my food and everything was hot, fish was just fried. You get PLENTY of food for the price

Yelp
Soul food in Austin is generally not good. But Whip My Soul is the exception! I went on a Sunday afternoon around 3:45 and waited about 15 minutes for my food. It was packed and everyone was waiting for food so I sat and enjoyed the 90s and 00s music. The cashier was helpful and friendly and I ordered the 2 wings, 2 fish, 2 tenders platter which comes with 2 sides. I ordered cheesy mac and cornbread dressing. I also ordered peach cobbler for dessert. The seasoning and breading on the fish was fire. I also really enjoyed the wings and could come back just to order them. The cheesy Mac was delicious too. The cornbread dressing has gravy on it which I didn't like (I don't like gravy) but the flavors were right! The peach cobbler was good but I like my crust a little thicker/crunchier. Overall, a really good dinner that was 2 servings for me. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Hands down best soul food in the Austin area! The catfish grilled or fried was so delicious , the fried chicken was crispy and flavorful, and meat so juicy! All the sides was wonderful: collard greens, beans & rice and the Mac & cheeeeseeee... OMG!!!!! The Ox tail was so tender and flavorful too! We will be coming back and bringing out of town friends here!! Only suggestion.... Y'all need ice cream to go with your delicious peach cobbler !

Yelp
This place was amazing. I had the oxtails meal and they were so tender and flavorful. I love all the kool aid type drinks they offer, I'm not a big soda drinker so this was a nice option to have. Was my first time there since I was in the city on vacation from Charlotte, and the staff was very welcoming and accommodating to all my questions lol. I can't wait to go back when I'm in town again.

Yelp
Got recommended this spot by an Austin friend and it did not disappoint! We got there 15 min after they opened Sunday and we were already like 6/7th in the restaurant. So come prepared for a wait/line if you're planning to come for dinner or lunch on Sunday. The food came out hot & fresh. And it didn't take long either. The cabbage took the longest (didn't come out until I was about 3/4th done with my meal) but that's honestly ok, because everything else was so good. The cornbread was dry though. That's the only take back I would give them. Unless you get the cornbread as one of your sides, it doesn't come with it. So that was the only thing that disappointed me. The pork chop was juicy and good seasoning. Wings were delicious. The fried fish was slightly dry, but it wasn't the worst I had. Good seasoning and fresh food was great.

Yelp
Food: It's like food to my soul...delicious! The chicken & waffle was a combination of 2 crispy chicken tenders, with a fluffy waffle! The baked chicken & rice was a hit too, tender and fluffy. The yams were sweet but not too sweet and the homemade Cheezy Mac sealed the deal! "Ya'll not ready". If you want to take it way back, there's a variety of Kool-Aid flavors to choose from. Trust me you won't have diabetes after drinking. Service: Excellent customer service, food came out quick and hot! In addition, the owner makes sure you have any and everything you need. Ambiance: The restaurant esthetics are pleasing with a good vibe. Listening to some old school R&B will take you back down memory lane while grubbing on your meal. Side note: Arrive early because sometimes the line is out the door! Do I need to say more?! My soul was whipped!

Yelp
Oh my gosh, if you haven't gone just GO! This food is incredible. The staff is so so nice. The food portions are insane. I feel it's a bang for your buck & you can eat off of your meal more than once. If you're looking for delicious comfort food, this is the place to go. We usually get it to go, but the inside is cute as well. Absolutely recommend Whip My Soul!

Yelp
Wow wow wow. One day I was craving some good fried chicken and so this place came up on Yelp. This place has met all of my expectations and beyond. They serve one of the best tasting fried chicken I've had in Austin. The batter on the wings is light and crispy, the meat so tender and juicy. The seasoning is perfect with the right amount of spice and lemon kick. It has me wanting more. I ordered their waffle fries and onions as sides. They were good but I am curious about their cheesy Macs. The staff were wearing shirts that highlighted their mac salad so I'm sure that must be good. The order of shrimp was delicious, thought I was expecting it to be much bigger in size. Regardless, everything was chef's kiss. Service is even better. The staff are very friendly. I learned they are a recent establishment and originally from Chicago. Pretty awesome place. All good vibes here.

Yelp
Still our favorite soul food eats! Still great customer service and delicious food. Chicken and waffles is what I come for and the Kool aid. The seasoning they have on their wings is Soo good, maybe a hint of sweet with salty. Literally every side here is worth getting. Don't skip dessert, the homemade cakes are moist and you get a large slice. This is the Roscoes of Austin but their own twist. Delish!

Yelp
I yelped Black Owned Businesses and this restaurant popped up. It was very clean, and a nice size as well. The customer service was top tier. The food was good. I got the 3 fish 3 wings meal with macaroni and cheese and greens. Everything was really good. I could have had my fish fried harder( I hate soft fish) but that's my fault because I forgot to request it. I did added 3 large fish for like $5.50. I will say personally that's a little high (maybe if they were colossal shrimp). The shrimp wasn't that good to me. Maybe because it was soggy(they were sitting in oil) Overall I was very pleased. The owners was super nice and engaged with all the guests. He made sure you were good and didn't need anything else. Aye man add a little more sugar to that koolaid . I'm from Memphis and Mississippi we like it a little sweeter. I will definitely be back and wish him much more success. Go and check Whip My Soul out!

Yelp
Walk in order, pay then sit down and wait for your peace of heaven!! The food smells wonderful. I ordered chicken tenders and waffles with some kool-aid. Wish I had another stomach. It is family friendly with some R&B playing in the back ground. While listening to good music and waiting for heaven there are a few TV with some collegiate basketball. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Woo wee! This place is the real deal. Their cat fish, OUTSTANDING. Lord! It's moist, it's flaky, it's lightly breaded and fried. Unbelievable. I stuffed myself with the cat fish. Fried okra was really good. So yesterday was actually the first time I ever had okra. And I have to say Whip My Soul's was a little better. It's cut differently. And I wonder if that makes the difference? The other place cut the okra the long way. And Whip My Soul is cut in round chunks. So good, firm and lightly breaded too. Delicious. The sweet potatoes are glazed with Love and sugar, and cinnamon, and just sweet goodness. I also got their cornbread, which was buttery and delicious too. The whole meal was amazing. And I'm so mad that I waited so long to come here. Now that I know, I will be coming back. This was a meal that I have been missing in my life. Unbelievable good.

Yelp
10 out of 10 I would recommend. The staff is amazing and tentative. They communicate very well. They were out of a lot, but I was able to try the tenders, wings, fish, mac and cheese, and grits. Lemme tell ya! The food was bomb. Grits were smooth, chicken was crispy, Mac was Mac'n. It gets busy, it gets crowded, but it was worth standing in line for.

Yelp
You're gonna be whipped for sure so just plan on making this a regular spot in your dining out rotation. First and foremost none of their sides are seasoned with pork. That was my first question upon arriving at the counter to order. The owner said they do not cook with pork. This made my day because it meant there were no limitations to my ordering of sides. Let's talk about the Cheezy Mac. It's baked and super cheesy (using real cheese and nothing liquid/runny). The Mean Greens are yummy with a slight kick that had me wishing I ordered a piece of cornbread to sop up the pot liquor. The Red Beans and Rice are a nice mini meal all on their own. My first time I ordered the combo plate with fish and shrimp. Fish was good but the shrimp delighted my tastebuds even more, so that's what I've gotten every time after (since i don't eat chicken). The shrimp are lightly breaded and seasoned well. Speaking of seasoning, none of their food is overly salted which is important to note. It's all flavorful using other spices and not just salt. The restaurant itself is open and airy with tables and a couple booths against the wall. Good music is playing and a few TVs on the walls are usually playing a sports show. The ladies restroom was clean and I greatly appreciated that because a dirty restroom will prevent me from eating at a restaurant. Service and servers are great and food comes out pretty quickly. And you can tell it was made to order! I'm so glad there's a really good soul food spot closer to the north side of town. I hope they are around for a long time and the quality stays as wonderful as it is now.

Yelp
Yesss! This place is where it's at. I got the oxtail , collards, and yams. Let me say that they did not disappoint. Yes, the price for oxtail is high, but it's worth every cent. They have a row of Florida Kool-Aid, and I chose red, of course! I'm definitely coming back, and you should too. The service is awesome and the staff are friendly!
