Downtown Austin InterContinental Hotel Opens 1920s-Themed Whiskey Bar | Eater Austin

"Reservations-only, 1920s-themed ten-seat whiskey lounge tucked inside the hotel's Stephen F.'s Bar & Restaurant, with a menu curated by bar expert Justin Elliott (who opened downtown bar the Townsend). It offers a global selection of whiskeys and classic cocktails like Manhattans and Sazeracs—many prepared tableside—paired with bar snacks such as deviled eggs, garlic-charred olives, and shrimp-and-chorizo arancini. Period-appropriate decor includes vintage crystal sconces, ornate glassware, Limoges serving dishes, and a private terrace overlooking Congress Avenue; the speakeasy theme nods to the InterContinental's 1924 Prohibition-era origins. The lounge debuted on Friday, October 26 and is open Mon–Fri 3 p.m.–midnight, Sat noon–2 a.m., and Sun noon–11 p.m.; reservations (call (512) 721-4230) are required, with two cocktail-hour seatings at 5:30 and 8:30, a $100 minimum for up to 10 people, and an $800 minimum to rent the space as a private event." - Erin Russell

I went to Whisper Room with my friends and it was a very unpleasant experience. As soon as we got inside, the place was extremely overcrowded, way beyond what seemed like a safe capacity. People were stepping out just to get some air, and others ended up leaving altogether because it was so packed. On top of that, they threw away my belongings without giving me any alternative option to store them. Among my things was my pepper spray, which, as a woman in NYC, is something I consider essential for my safety. When I asked if they still had my stuff, they told me that the owner takes everything, which is irresponsible and unacceptable. The organization was terrible, and the security measures were lacking. I would never recommend this place.

Absolutely outrageous. I was served three watered-down shots—not even in shot glasses, but in tiny medicine cap-sized cups—and charged $60 for it. To make matters worse, they automatically added gratuity for this insult of a drink. Total ripoff. Avoid this place at all costs. Never order a drink here!!!

Bouncers took my Advil which I had brought for period cramps and wouldn't even return the container they were in. Also, I've lived in NYC for 4 years and have never had a patdown as touchy/invasive. Venue was also poorly ventilated. Will not be returning.

Had the most humiliating experience of my life last this morning. After attending a concert, the artist had his after party here. I purchased the $20 & drive from downtown Brooklyn to manhattan ( a 30 min drive). I stood in the line I was told to with my ticket & they told to stand in the other line when I got the front. When I went back to the other line, I asked the bouncer if I could get back in my spot because he told me to go to the other ticket line and he said loudly I didn’t say that. There were maybe 15 people & we were waiting in line for 20 mins, many people walked away. I started playing my music on my phone & took a video as a social media manger” I was told I couldn’t take videos in the line ( I had taken several already along with others) & I wasn’t getting in. This was after the gentleman infront of me told me I could skip him because I had been there before him in for a while. The crowd grew silent. I wasn’t sure if it was my Afro or dark skin ( as I’ve never had issues with entry to clubs, events- even been invited to skip the line by bouncers) but after reading reviews I’m sure that was it. I heard the bouncer tell two girls they could pay $20 to get in. I asked him if I could pay and he said said yeah “$40.” It had started to rain at this point, my phone & hair were soaked. I paid it and was able to network and get the contact I wanted. Wrote an email asking for a refund for the $60. I’ll be calling this club & will be reporting all to the BBB. Spoke to a Josh or James afterwards who seemed like the manager to let him know who seemed disinterested and short. Oh! When I told them I was recording for content & am a social media manager I was told loudly infront of the crowd “ good for you.” Attachment : $40 paid for less than an hour although I had been there for 2. It was so hard to come out. I’ve been having personal issues and decided last minute to go- thinking the fun would help clear my head…woke up this morning with hurt feelings.

The bouncers were very rude. Upon arrival after my friends and I had one drink earlier that night the bouncer looked my friend (she was a poc) and said she looked too drunk (referred to her eyes) and told us to take a walk and buy some water. I was shocked. If we were wasted or even drunk I could’ve believed it but we had one drink and it was very straightforward that the comment came from a place of ignorance. Very rude and bad first impression for a new place. Never going back.

This probably the worse clubbing venue I’ve ever been in. I came for an Afro beat night event hosted by Afrocode Nation. First of all there was no live DJ in attendance at all, and the pre-recorded music set was barely any Afrobeats. Additionally the vibe was lame and I mostly contribute it to the club layout with a section smack dab in the middle which made it hard to maneuver around, mostly everyone just stood huddled in a massive crowd just watching two people in a section dance. The music was horrible the bouncers were inattentive at the door when I tried to leave. I would not recommend for a good night out.

I had to put 1 star to be able to write a review. This place is horrible, the bouncers won't let you in if they think you are not good-looking. Go to a place were you are treated with respect. Avoid this place.

Horrible bouncers, they treat women like a peace of meat…don’t go there! It is unacceptable to avoid entrance based on their perception of good looking. Misogynist!
