When I was growing up, White Castle was an institution. Every now and then my friends and I would stop in for some cheap sliders and fries and that gradually morphed into drunk teenagers trying to devour a family pack, something that later became synonymous with Harold and Kumar. I vividly remember many noble yet unsuccessful efforts put into eating 30 sliders, 5 fries and 4 drinks while sitting in some random park in Queens. Delicious, disgusting and hilarious all at once.
Anyway, life rolls on, I left my hometown and didn't see a White Castle for years. Then after all this time, I noticed this branch on a ride out to Newark Airport. Yes, after all these years, White Castle was just a short ride from my home. I told my kids all the stories from way back when and they were immediately all in on checking it out.
We had an appointment out near Princeton the other day, so we stopped in and did a bit of a tasting menu. I didn't get the 30 pack, now known as a Crave Crate, as my fancy gentleman's stomach wouldn't appreciate it. However, we shared a bunch of different sliders, fries, onion rings, chicken rings and corn dog nibblers. The verdict? I think my life's dining experience in general, and places like Five Guys and Shake Shack specifically, have destroyed White Castle for me. While the food was all hot and fresh, it's obviously nowhere near the quality of the aforementioned places. It's cheap and it'll do, but I wouldn't come back a second time. For what it's worth my kids thought it was the greatest thing ever.
I also have to mention, while this branch was clearly on the newer side, the interior was really dirty and a bit off putting. Every table we tried to sit out was dirty and so were most of the seats. The floors were covered in food debris and packaging too. A little more focus on sanitation wouldn't hurt.
White Castle gets 3 stars from me. If you're used to eating at McDonald's and Burger King type places, definitely think about giving this place a try. If you're used to better burgers, don't waste your time.
