18 New York Area Spots to Sip on Chardonnay This Memorial Day | Eater

"At Midtown’s White Olive, executive chef Hasan Karci serves up a menu of traditional Mediterranean dishes. Snack on a couple of mezze — like hummus, tzatziki, or melitzanosalata — while sipping on a glass of chardonnay and deciding your mains. Don’t miss out on the Girit Ezme dip, either: a mixture of feta and valbrasso cheese, pistachio, walnuts, parsley, basil, and crushed red pepper and garlic. Entrees range from a surf ‘n turf with filet mignon and jumbo shrimp to grilled octopus with eggplant puree, but whatever you order, be sure to get a side of their roasted lemon potatoes." - Julia Gómez Kramer

I took my mother to this place since she likes Mediterranean food and it's definitely one of the best ones I've had in a while! We like the ambiance, beautiful restaurant, and great staff! We had the Be Passionate cocktail and their Mule drink. It's very tasty and recommended to start off lunch. Next, we had their Green Risotto Shrimp appetizer. Hands down the best appetizer on their menu. Very flavorful, risotto cooked just right, and the shrimp is tender! I had the Beef Bourguignon while my mother had the Baby Lamb Chops Rack. I cannot tell you how tender the beef was. You have to try it! Delicious and flavorful. My mother enjoyed her lamb chops as well This restaurant is a go for anyone in the mood for some Mediterranean food, after a Broadway show, or just a lunch spot that will satisfy your appetite. We will definitely come here again!

From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding - attentive staff who made us feel truly welcome. The food was absolutely exceptional, with every dish beautifully prepared and bursting with flavor. The seasonal risotto was creamy perfection, and the baby lamb chops were cooked to perfection. This place strikes the perfect balance of quality cuisine and genuine hospitality. Definitely coming back soon!

If there is this one place in NYC that you had to go to, then this is the place. Right from the time we stepped in, the staff were so friendly and warm. We had Khaleed look after us, and the way he took us through the menu and explained everything, I’m definitely going back to this place. The food was top notch, every dish that came on our table just popped our taste buds and kept us wanting for more.

The food was absolutely amazing and beautifully presented. I ordered the wild salmon, while my husband had the Chilean sea bass and lentil soup. We truly enjoyed the meal. The design of the restaurant is also stunning, with pleasant colors and a warm, inviting atmosphere. There are many Mediterranean restaurants in NYC, but only a few feel truly special — the kind of place you want to return to again and again. This is definitely one of them. The only downside was the service. My water wasn’t refilled until I asked, and our server (I believe his name was Sam, based on the check) didn’t seem very attentive to our table. It might have just been an off moment, but I did feel slightly overlooked at times. Overall, we had a wonderful experience thanks to the outstanding food and ambiance, but the service could definitely use some improvement.

We chose White Olive to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, and overall, it was an excellent decision. The atmosphere, service, and food came together to create a memorable evening. Service was a highlight of our experience. Our server, Darcy, was exceptionally attentive, warm, and professional. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable and provided thoughtful recommendations on both food and drinks, which greatly enhanced our dining experience. The food was beautifully presented and, for the most part, exceeded expectations. The four mezzes were well-prepared, with the tzatziki being the standout. The calamari, shrimp saganaki, and grilled halloumi were flavorful and enjoyable. For our entrées, we ordered the lavraki and the filet mignon, both of which were seasoned well and cooked with care. Each dish showcased freshness and attention to detail in preparation. For dessert, we tried the baklava with ice cream and the molten lava cake. The baklava was delicate and balanced, while the lava cake offered a rich flavor and a gooey texture. Overall, White Olive provided us with a wonderful dining experience and made a special occasion feel even more meaningful. The combination of attentive service, thoughtful recommendations, and high-quality dishes makes it a restaurant we look forward to visiting again.

When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by our hostess, who was also our server. She was extremely kind, attentive, and professional throughout our visit—always smiling, checking in to see if we needed anything, and making sure we were enjoying our food. Her service was truly wonderful and one of the highlights of the evening. The restaurant itself has a beautiful ambiance and great décor, which added to the overall atmosphere. As for the food, it was fine—not bad, but not something that makes me feel the need to come back. Unfortunately, I did have an issue with my salad: the tomato slices still had a market sticker on it. I showed it to our server, who apologized and took the tomato to the kitchen, but nothing else was done. I still had to pay for the dish, and no complimentary replacement or gesture was offered. I understand that mistakes happen (I work in a restaurant myself), but I was a bit disappointed in how the situation was handled. Overall, the service and atmosphere were excellent, but the food and follow-up on the issue left me underwhelmed.

I stopped in for lunch! When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked into a very gorgeous restaurant. I was served by Saniya and she was nice. I had: Espresso Yourself Vodka Martini Green Risotto Shrimp Chilean Seabass Chicken Picatta Molten Chocolate Cake My favorite was the green risotto shrimp! I had a great time here all in all!

Our server Khalid was fantastic and extremely attentive. He suggested the mezze platter and what other foods pair well with it. We try something new every time we visit and they are all up to the same level and getting better. The main we got the mixed meat palate and for sweet treat, the cookie skillet which just melts in your mouth! Definitely a repeat restaurant and a fantastic experience!

Yelp
Walked in without a reservation on a weekday with no expectations but left pleasantly surprised by both food and service. The service was extraordinary and our server Nadia was attentive, open to giving recommendations and friendly! The chicken picatta was so tender and calamari was well done without any frills. If you're in the area stop by!

Yelp
Had dinner at White Olive on a Friday evening, drawn by its clean, modern vibe and promise of Mediterranean flavors. The space was stylish and quiet, though over-air-conditioned, which made it less comfortable. Service was efficient and informed. The mezze platter looked pre-scooped and was hit or miss--the tzatziki and chicken salad were solid, but the hummus and eggplant lacked flavor. They charged us extra for cucumbers even though we forwent the pita and you'd think a Mediterranean restaurant has plenty of cucumbers to offer. The Greek salad was cucumber-heavy and basic. Sea bass came beautifully plated but underseasoned, with small portions and more garnish than substance. At $225 for two (with just one glass of wine), the experience felt overpriced for the quality. A good-looking place that needs to back it up on the plate.

Yelp
We were seated at a table that had something on my chair and the fringe of the decorative top tablecloth had food stains. We asked to change the decorative top and she said to change tables. So we did. I got the lentil soup, grilled halloumi, and the red snapper. We drank Pellegrino. I didn't like that the glasses were plastic. The soup was good. Very much a tomato base. The halloumi was a bit salty. I had the red snapper and my friend got the sea bass. Neither were impressed with the fish. Place was pretty empty when we started. Nice decor. Good service. A quiet oasis in the city.

Yelp
Nice midtown lunch spot. The fish was a bit chewy (I had the Chilean sea bass, I don't think that is normal). The mezzo was great - had the white olive spicy one with pita bread. My friend was in pass over (pita is leaven) so I had all the pita. Nice service, wasn't super busy

Yelp
I've turned many people into regulars by bringing them here. These foods deliver premium quality without premium prices. This restaurant provides exceptional customer care. The staff is patient and the food is worth savoring. Absolute evaluation.

Yelp
Came here for a really fun work dinner with colleagues- Baba (I'm not even sure what his name is- I think he's the manager but the man was seriously doing it all- taking orders, serving, recommending drinks, welcoming folks at the front door) was the MVP of the night, and I think a lot of the fun from this dinner was thanks to him. Decor/Ambiance- very cute aesthetic with white walls, olive branches and nice lighting, very beach-y. Service- outstanding. Drink orders were prompt, lots of great explanations about the food (as we had some folks with dietary restrictions) and just so attentive and warm. One of my dairy-free coworkers had specifically asked for a dish without dairy- while it did come out with the dairy product, it was promptly whisked back and made anew. Food- spectacular spread! Baba gave us a lot of great recommendations and we were able to try delicious mezze, grilled shrimp, beef lollipops (a surprise favorite!), grilled halloumi, and more. For my entree, I ordered the grilled octopus (tender chunks of grilled octopus in a bechamel/eggplant puree) that came out on a sizzling plate, and I gobbled up every last bite. I especially recommend this place if you have a folks with different dietary restrictions as well as different tastes- the servers will make sure to make the appropriate recommendations and really make sure everyone has a great time.

Yelp
Last night, we visited White Olive for the second time, having reserved a table for Valentine's Day. They took us to the back room, and we initially thought it was a special, better table. However, the lighting and design of the back room were completely off and didn't compare to the main dining area, which has a street view. We ordered four mezze dishes, but the menu items, presentation, and taste were drastically different from our previous visit. Last time, the dips were delicious and beautifully presented. Unfortunately, none of the dips this time lived up to those standards (you can see the difference in the photo). We also ordered a chicken piccata--it was okay, but not nearly the same quality as before. Even the service wasn't as good as our first experience. We had loved this place the first time, which is why we chose it for Valentine's Day, but this time we were really disappointed.

Yelp
This was such a great find! Ambiance: The restaurant was beautiful! So perfectly decorated and such attention to detail. They have beautiful foliage and twinkle lights. The dishware and glassware matches perfectly with the theme of the restaurant. They also have really cute serving ware that enhances the dining experience. Food: Food was so good! The pita bread was perfectly cooked and came out fresh and hot. It had some really nice seasoning on it too. We ordered the 4 mezze deal and all 4 of the mezzes were excellent. It is really hard to pick one favorite so I'd say the two I loved the most were the White Olive Spicy Ezme and the Htipiti. We also got the Tzatziki and the Melitzanosalata and they were also really good. I will say that the White Olive Spicy Ezme is something unique that I haven't found at any of the other Mediterranean restaurants we've been to in the city. We also good the salad and it had so many different fresh vegetables and the dressing was well seasoned. The Halloumi cheese was also a personal favorite. It was seasoned with capers and other veggies and a vinaigrette that added the perfect level of acidity. Service: The service was good, very friendly. It was a bit slow though. Price: The restaurant is on the higher end of prices but I wouldn't say it's unreasonable considering the portion sizes. Additional Bonus: The restaurant is on Seated so we got cash for dining there :) If you don't used the Seated app, I highly recommend it as a NYC diner. When you download it, get $10 if you use the code: Forum1

Yelp
3.5/5. Food was decent, but service was subpar. I think they were understaffed as we had to call someone over each time we needed anything. As for the food, we ordered lentil soup, crab cakes, pita/dip, salmon, and lobster pasta. I recommend the lentil soup for sure! Crab cakes were ok, wouldn't order again. The lobster pasta was good, nice pieces of lobster in it, but the pasta itself was fairly bland and could've used more flavor.

Yelp
Dropped in after an event nearby. Quiet, convenient location with cozy street level dining area and bar. Food was outstanding from grilled octopus, salmon, baklava, tapenade and much more! Restaurant was half full but quiet. We had a wonderful conversation with couple next to us and left thinking we should return soon.

Yelp
Ambience was great for a weeknight work dinner. We had the green shrimp risotto and the mezze platter and liked everything!

Yelp
Eating here is a unique experience. While dining about 85% of the population walking by were curiously peeking in. You can't blame them, White Olive is decorated beautifully. There are a few reasons why I would recommend you coming here: The service is very good. Alé waited on my friend and I and was very honest about his lack of knowledge in creating some cocktails (mixologist was out that day) but proceeded to make excellent drinks and share great stories while being humble about it. We enjoyed the crab cakes, tzatziki, lobster pasta and Branzino. The tzatziki + pita was my favorite choice of all. It was light and incredibly seasoned. Please come here if you love olives, and if you don't you, will definitely fall in love with something else on the menu.

Yelp
We had an awful experience. We should have left as soon as we walked into the place. 1. First impressions are lasting ones. The place looks like a diner and when we were given the menus, we were confirmed in our impressions. Only larger menus are found in Cheesecake Factory, Applebee's and neighborhood diners - but this one was up there! All the choices should have led us out the door knowing that they seemingly specialize "in everything" - NOT. 2. Service was haphazard and poorly timed. There seemed to be two server and one busser. The poor busser seemed to be running like crazy. No joy or excitement in recommendations or presentation. 3. Major complaint: our food was room temperature and tasteless. Soup was best thing but even that was not hot. Beef Bourgogne had five small pieces of meat that were rough - not tender and sauce unappealing on a bed of potatoes. Partner's fish was similarly tasteless and not hot. 4. Price of meal over 200 USD. Was not worth it for us. Did not have an opportunity to speak to any maître d or manager as no one made their way to our table to check on us.

Yelp
The restaurant is pretty and the staff is very nice. We had good service and were treated well. However, the food had no flavor and was ridiculously overpriced for what it was. Additionally, the restaurant does not have a restroom in the dining area, you need to walk into the hotel lobby and the restroom leaves a lot to be desired. There are much better Mediterranean restaurants in the city, save your money.

Yelp
A pleasant surprise! We were walking around on a week night and decided to pop in for dinner. We were seated immediately and the service was excellent. Our server was attentive and gave helpful recommendations. Our drinks came out quickly and were all delicious. The octopus was perfectly done. The lobster pasta had plenty of lobster in it. The restaurant is airy and clean. We had our dogs with us in their carriers and they were accommodating. It's definitely a spot I'd go back to again.

Yelp
I was in NYC for meetings, my biz partner and I had an amazing dinner. The food is out of this world - ask Baba what to eat - he recommended I have the Beef Bourguignon, it was incredible. The waitstaff was really attentive and it's a cozy, warm room. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Truly amazingly delicious food and even better service! I went in with my family of 6 including my little brother who's in a wheelchair. They accommodated for us so well and quickly. Truly making us and my brother feel so special! Atmosphere is great! Super welcoming, clean sleek look! Perfect for dinner with friends and family or a date night! Definitely a must if visiting!

Yelp
Starting with the total recap- this place is a place to go back to. I haven't had a memorable experience like this in a while. Everything about this place was perfect- food, interior, service and ambiance. I had a truffle oil pasta as well as the grilled octopus for the appetizer they were EXCELLENT. Before I even started to order the table setting and cleanliness of the restaurant was A++. I do really appreciate the detail. I was there for about 2 hours and had a full course of meal with my friend and we both walked out happy.
google avatar

Susan G.

Yelp
Really underrated Mediterranean spot! The interior is designed very well. The service is good. We got the lobster pasta, octopus salad, and hummus. Everything was really tasty. The pasta was creamy and very generous with lobster. The salad was light and refreshing. We got the baklava with ice cream for dessert, which was a delicious combo. I would definitely visit again!
google avatar

Yelp
White Olive is a tiny restaurant tucked in nicely on a side street on Midtown West. The dining room and bar are very attractive. I took a bar stool and I ordered. I began with the Octopus salad. The Octopus was very tender, and the salad was tasty. I ordered the Shrimp Saganaki and it was delicious. The Feta Cheese really enhanced the flavor. My bill with a glass of red wine was about $80. A bit steep, but nothing in Midtown is ever inexpensive.
google avatar

Yariv G.

Yelp
The food was excellent. And the space is really beautiful. We had the chicken salad and the eggplant salad. Both were exceptional. And the pita bread that came with it was not the regular "from a supplier" but rather really fresh and tasty. We also had the octopus salad which was very good. Good place!!

Mohammed R.

Yelp
Visit with family. Food was amazing. We enjoyed the ambience and temperature of rhe restaurant and food was good. Food serving was quick. And also this place good for families and parties aswell as over experiance is amazing. We are planning to comback again Keep it up.
google avatar

Heather E.

Yelp
Convenient walk from my hotel, able to get a last minute reservation. The food was bland and flavorless. Beef sausage lollipops were just a cut up link of sausage on a stick. Could not tell the difference between the red snapper and Branzino. Beef bourguinon was the best for flavor and also very tender. The chicken piccata had no flavor at all. Filet was nothing special. French fries were very good (for being a French fry, but it must have been the salt that made them good because all other items were lacking. They were out of spinach, green beans, and Brussels sprouts, so our family was missing out on vegetables for this meal. I did just realize we had the zucchini pancakes which were good. The baklava was very wet (awkwardly), and the tiramisu, while a custard in a cup, was surprisingly good given we were expecting traditional tiramisu. The restaurant was quiet.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
The ambiance in the restaurant is clean and modern with olive trees for color. The service is simply outstanding. I had the octopus which was the most tender I have tasted in NYC. The Branzino was cooked to perfection and delicious. The chef came out to see us and was very friendly and knowledgeable. Thoroughly enjoyed this place. Will come back often.

Yelp
This restaurant is absolutely GORGEOUS! It is so cute and so pretty inside. I definitely was undressed for it but nevertheless had a great time. The vibes are immaculate in here -- for starters, there was a live violinist play covers of pop songs. The food here was fire! My favorites were the tuna tartar, hummus, and lobster pasta but ALL the food was delicious. I would definitely come back here, especially on a date. I would 10/10 recommend coming here before this hidden gem blows up and it is hard to get reservations here!
google avatar

Dave L.

Yelp
Beautiful interior - with wonderful live violin player during dinner. Appetizer -choose your three dips was delicious and a highlight. We did hummus- their spicy dip and tatziki. Dinners- Truffled pasta was bland and not worth the price basically an overpriced truffle tasting dish of noodles with a few mushrooms thrown in. Grilled octopus - while tasty it was a mess of a dish and the octopus got lost in it as they chop it up into small pieces. Chilies Sea bass was worth it- flaky buttery with a nice finishing crunch on top. By far the best meal. Dessert- The baklava was fantastic it comes with ice cream which should just be eliminated for more baklava. Service was below average- our waitress was not attentive at all and barely came to the table. We could have used plenty more water and she never checked to see if our meal was tasty after a few bites. A one time pop in here for us. Won't return.

Yelp
I was glad to finally see this establishment open. It didn't disappoint the menu is simple yet elegant......no wrong selection to be had. The food was seasoned to perfection and fresh. The waiter was very helpful and attentive. Only slights....well general observations......hopes for change....being their liquor license gets issued very soon....side note the Mocktails were still Amazing (and very appreciated and enjoyable)!!!!! Very refreshing and hit the spot (they should maintain such a seasonal list going forward even after the liquor license is issued); But I am excited for them to make Outstanding Cocktails when alcohol can be added to the mix with similar innovations maintained. And the final observation is the bathroom which is/was a semi afterthought or I'm assuming difficulty due to the hotel shared space - one room accessible by the swipe of a card. But the overall thoughts are I am going to love this place and will be a great spot in rotation for summer eatings after work or just because.

Yelp
Great opening in midtown area, very cozy interior with Greek - Turkish inspired menu from all sort of mezze spreads to saganaki to keftedes that my 3 year old absolutely loved! From Mezze spread we loved them all but my absolute favorite was Girit Ezme feta spread with walnuts and pistachio perfectly proportioned and delish. Pacanga Pastry is something similar to cheese cigars but what's even better it has pastrami inside as well, crunchy and full of flavor! Keftedes (pork free) meatballs that my child finished an entire plate, they were served in tomato sauce with tzatziki on the side. Shrimp Saganaki is served in cast iron dish with tomato ouzo and chilli sauce finished with feta cheese simple and once again full of flavor. The best pasta Trenette Truffle that stole my heart and I can't wait to go back for more of it , it's a home made narrow and flat pasta tossed with mushrooms and creamy truffle sauce that we couldn't get enough of !!! All the food on the menu is incredible but what really fascinated me is their amazing MOCKTAILS! We've tried them all, so flavourful and made with fresh ingredients and organic farm produce! Shout out Alexander for crafting these delish beverages and Akiv for outstanding service! Manager was cheerful and enthusiastic made our evening so cozy and enjoyable! Can't wait to bring more friends and family to this new midtown gem!

Yelp
I found this restaurant by just walking by since the exterior and interior were decorated beautifully. It definitely doesn't disappoint when it comes to the cozy decor, friendly service and ambiance. But one way it misses the mark is the food and price. The food is good, but it's just WAYYYY too overpriced for what it is. They charged me nearly $30 for a bottle of water i didn't even ask for. We ordered the sea bass and it was just okay. If you want to just experience a beautiful cozy restaurant and have the money to spend, sure. But there's better restaurants out there with better food.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
When we first walked in the first thing, we noticed is how beautiful inside is. They have lovely lighting, and the table decor's very nice. We started off with the mezzo appetizer. The lobster pasta was delicious. The salmon is cooked to perfection, and the Bolognese pasta was very flavorful. I would definitely recommend to come here for fresh, delicious food and great customer service.
google avatar

Tonja S.

Yelp
Amazing service. I loved the warm fresh pita! We ordered the humus, white olive spicy ezme and tuna tartar. They were all amazing. The cocktails are delicious as well. We will return again for the service and the food!

Anita A.

Yelp
This place had fabulous food, no doubt. And the overall atmosphere seemed lovely, but sadly we were seated in a tiny corner next to the employee COAT CLOSET! They may have been busy at the front of the restaurant, not sure, but there were at least 20 banquette seats where they could have seated us, but I guess we were punished for not having reservations. In the course of the meal, I was asked to get up not once, but TWICE because a server needed to access the closet. This wouldn't even be acceptable for fast food, much less a $100 per person (before tip) meal. I largely blame management, because clearly the staff wasn't trained. I also witnessed a manager berating a staff member for trying to help a customer find a lost item. Lots of work to do here.

Ericka T.

Yelp
Nothing was salted or seasoned. Had to add immense amounts of salt to everything & was not worth it for the price. The focus was more on the aesthetic both of the environment and food rather than the technique and flavor of the food itself. Service was fine, just wish I hadn't spent $200 on overpriced subpar food! I've gotten similar food for way cheaper and much better elsewhere.

Michelle P.

Yelp
The food here was okay. I will order the hummus again. It came with pita bread and it was warm and really good. My main dish of fish was decent, but nothing to make me want to go there again just to eat that. The service was nice and friendly and she came often to refill our water. My only other gripe is to note that they add tip already to the bill. So unless you want to tip more than 20%, be careful.
google avatar

Will Y.

Yelp
Lovely interior decor and fresh food. Service was exceptional with the waiter providing us recommendations. Definitely need to dress up as it's a semi formal restaurant. Will visit again

Yelp
Incredible food, atmosphere, and service!! The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food was perfect for a large group - would definitely recommend for either a fun birthday dinner or even a cute date night! Will be back for sure :)

Yelp
Late business dinner - very good and tasty. Expensive but standard for NYC- not any more expensive than other spots. Good solid place. Recommend for sure.

Shirley J.

Yelp
The grilled octopus with eggplant entre was one of the best octopus I've ever had in the states. So soft and fresh- similar to the ones I've had in Spain. The eggplant was delicious too- creamy almost like mashed potatoes. I've been looking for good octopus in NY and so happy I tried this dish here. I'm so happy I found such good octopus that I wrote my first ever Yelp review in the years I've been using it. Highly recommend. My friend ordered the sea bass which was also fluffy and good. Decor here is super nice and elegant. Great service. Loved my experience here Sorry for poor quality photo, was not planning on writing a review because I don't usually post reviews but the octopus blew me away

Yelp
The service was awesome!! We came for an engagement party and brought a cake and the staff brought the cake with candles and cut slices for the whole table! The staff went around many times asking how everyone was doing and if we needed anything. Ali was the best!!

Yelp
food was extremely average. ambiance was pretty, nicely decorated. ordered the mixed grill and was not impressed at all. unless you're into an extremely americanized version of mediterranean food, i wouldn't recommend this place. waitress was nice and accommodating. for the price point, definitely not worth it. there are wayyy better mediterranean spots in the city for cheaper and similar price points.

Yelp
Food was wonderful, service was wonderful...... perfect night.. worthy of returning every single time I'm in New York

Nathaniel A.

Yelp
Place beautiful staff nice very tasty drinks very fancy food good price I recommend coming here

Alex G.

Yelp
Found this restaurant to be solidly mediocre. The food was acceptable, but I didn't sense any passion or "homemade" dishes. I wouldn't call this a true "Greek" restaurant; more like generalized Mediterranean food. Very pretty ambiance and decor, but somehow struck me as a bit "fake" and corporate. Fish was a bit dry, although skin was crisp - not cooked to order in my opinion, but reheated; sautéed mushrooms and also the spinach were served almost cold (maybe microwaved too quickly?). Definitely not cooked to order, either, as far as I could tell. Service was professional and polite. Overall, a "fair at most" place for lunch or dinner, but not a place to which I'd return.

Sabrina N.

Yelp
Amazing service!! Ali is the best waiter. Atmosphere is gorgeous, food is amazing. Had my friends engagement dinner with 20+ people and they accommodated us and took great care of us.

Osee N.

Yelp
Great service by Ali, good food , came out very quick ! Very nice waiters and very cute spot !
