Local haunt with vegan eats, burgers, live music, and patio

"One of the livelier spots in the crowded inner east side bar scene, White Owl Social Club customizes its large patio — uncovered in the precious sunny months, covered with a fire pit in the rainy season — making it a welcoming spot all year long. After a series of pop-ups, White Owl’s kitchen is now in the hands of the Chém Gió team full time, offering Vietnamese drinking food. White Owl hosts DJs for both free sets and more prominent ones with cover charges — plan ahead for weekend nights by checking the bar’s Instagram account." - Nathan Williams

"The “jawn” at this pop-up residency within a Southeast Belmont bar may be one of the most inventive sandwiches you’ll find after midnight on a Friday. A cross-section of Philadelphia and Puerto Rico, the sandwich starts with a house-made sesame seed hoagie roll, followed by a bed of 20-hour roasted pernil. Then comes the broccoli rabe — a play on Philly’s lesser-known classic, the roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich — as well as some melty provolone, sofrito mayo, and cilantro. It’s hearty and delicious, especially when paired with a pile of tostones and salsa criolla. It’s available until 1:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays." - Thom Hilton

"Located at 1305 SE 8th Avenue in Southeast Belmont, White Owl Social Club is the bar where Papi Sal’s will take up a three-month residency starting January 28, a setup that could potentially become permanent. Mummery says White Owl “felt right,” noting that past struggles at other locations included not having alcohol or adequate indoor or outdoor seating, and White Owl offers alcohol plus good inside and outside seating—features that make it a fitting home base for the residency, which will run from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"I saw an Instagram post from White Owl Social Club announcing new vaccine requirements that drew many positive replies but also some hostile comments—one called it "fascism," another wrote "Nazis," and others made incorrect claims about HIPAA. Management said they aren't particularly concerned and defended the policy in a statement: "We are just doing what we feel needs to be done to help stop the spread of COVID while still surviving in the industry. And honestly, the crazy comments don't even phase us at this point." - Alex Frane
