White's Restaurant

We were warmly welcomed by Tiffany and sat in a booth. It was a pretty busy little place and the team was working hard to accommodate everyone. We came at the end of the rush so there was a table available right away and we got drinks and water quickly. I had the Belgian waffle (solo light meal) it also comes in a breakfast with eggs and meat if you choose and my daughter had the burger (she likes it plain) and fries. Everything was delicious and it was a nice chill diner to catch up. The decor and booth seats are pretty worn and could definitely use some updating but the regulars definitely seemed to be at home scoffing down their meatloaves and sandwiches with glee reguardless. Tiffany was excellent, super friendly and kept up with refills and checking in just the right amount. Thank you so much.

Just had breakfast here and it was really good. My partner had the veggie omelette and I ordered the waffle breakfast; both were delicious and exactly what we were hoping for. He told me to mention that he liked that there was a lot of olives in it and the cheese was at least a medium cheddar which gave it a better flavor. The servers were incredibly friendly and clearly worked together as a team, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming instead of rushed. We’ll definitely be back and would absolutely recommend this spot for breakfast or brunch.

Typical diner, drive in, and dive atmosphere with cheerful, friendly service- Tiffany was great, remembered the nuances of our order and was very attentive in the midst of a very busy breakfast service on a Saturday morning. Food was good and the portions were huge. Highlights- biscuits were delicious, the gravy had ham in it, and the sausage links were generously sized and perfectly cooked. We would make this a regular stop.

So im older now, we go to local restaurants, it always seems they are commercially motivated, This place top notch was like going back in time, when you ordered an omelet you got a true omlet my wife got that and it was amazing, ordered i think dons big mess? I chose half im so glad I didn't order the full one! The guy next me did and it filled his plate, what an amazing experience the waitress was full of energy and made the visit top of my list, I've been to alot of breakfast places, that's my favorite meal all over the country, these folks have it figured out, thank you!

Oh man what a great breakfast place! Been coming here since about 2002 because it is always a solid meal with great friendly service at reasonable prices. I live in Hillsboro so I don’t get to come here as often as I’d like, but any excuse to drive to Salem and White’s is on my breakfast list.

It's an absolute gem in Salem! I ordered the awesome omelet, and omg, it's absolutely delicious. My sister ordered Dons big mess. We obviously couldn't finish it. So we packed it to go. Also, the service was great, too. The waitress is so nice and friendly. Would definitely come back here again.

Todays experience was one ill never forget and not in ways one will hope for. The waitress that served us was not only very disrespectful but also very unprofessional from the moment we walked in to the last min we left. She didn't state welcome in, sit wherever you like or any for.al greeting it was you guys can sit over here. Once seated she didn't bring up drinks just waters and by the time we ordered food we had to bring up we needed drinks. Once the food came out it was 2 things at a time and she complained about space to bring out food even though the restaurant was about half empty at this point. We get about halfway through our food and instead of checking on how the food was did we need any refills she went to every other table doing just that we had to flag her down to get a refill. Lastly toward the end I found a hair in my food and for me I'm not one to complain you know logically it could have been mine for the hair found it wasn't until the second one that was much longer and glued to my French toast is where I lost my appetite. It wasn't until my husband brought it up to the waitress about the hair that I not only lost all respect but was insulted all at the same time. She stated I'm sorry that happened and can remake and I stated no there was no need I was already grossed out, she then states well there is no discount that can be added since I ate most of the food. This is when I became insult I never brought up I wanted a discount or the food to be removed just to address the problem with the kitchen that is preparing your food for the guest was all I cared for so someone doesn't have to go through this again. She then has a discussion over whether she so fix the bill or not my husband goes to pay the bill and then I ask him did you tip which we did not and as the last person of our group leave she hears the waitress gossip about no tip. Im sorry but coming from family who worked for their tips In restaurant industry. I'm sorry but you get in tips the service you provide. After that we have made the decision that this will be our last time coming.

Went in middle of the week last week. First time customer. Heard some good things so I wanted to try it. Maybe my expectations were too high. Very cold service. Long wait to get refill. Food was over cooked and dry. 0/10. Do not recommend

Half the mess for a very full belly! Loved my meal. Service was excellent!! I always had my glass of water and cup of coffee filled. The restaurant and parking lot may be small but it's very obvious they have served the community of Salem well.

I've been gone to long and miss everything about whites especially the bisc and gravy

Food was mid. The pancake was dry and the egg was flavorless. Server was very clumsy, spilling drinks and forgetting stuff. Ambiance was fine. Seat was ripped. Cup rim was melted. Silverware was dirty and stained. Would not go here again

This is the best breakfast place Salem has to offer! They have tons of options to choose from, with big portions. The quality of the food is amazing and tasteful. Everything is affordable. There can sometimes be a long line for seating; however, they get you in pretty quickly! The servers are always very nice and accommodating.

What a lovely find near Salem's riverfront area, although the place is small, the ambiance is homey. We shared a large 8 seat table with another couple to save on wait time. The food was delicious everything cooked to perfection my eggs were the perfect texture. The mini mess was huge and I can't imagine ordering the large mess that thing has to be three meals in one :O Whenever we visit downtown Salem we will be sure to stop in for a meal.

This is comfort at its best. Small place serving delicious hot food. Friendly service with a smile! I ordered the patty melt on sourdough with fries...one of the best I've ever had. The coffee is hot, strong and delicious also. Gotta try this little local business!

This is my first time here with my son. He got them Mickey Mouse kids, pancakes and really enjoyed them. I tried out their cheese, sea, bacon, potato cakes, and they are very rich and delicious. Our surgery is very kind and quickly always fill my cup of coffee, attentive asking if we need anything else.

The food was good but the building itself is in really bad shape. The carpets are filthy. The booth seats are worn through. I was just really taken aback.

Very generous portions, could barely finish what I ordered. The Salem scramble is very good. Also got to try their pancakes and waffle. It has a family feel diner ambience which is very welcoming. The staff are all amazing, attentive, and friendly. Will definitely come back when I'm in Salem again.

White's is a Salem institution. It's a home and mainstay for scratch made breakfast. However, they've been slipping a bit lately. The have fantastic staff, but the food is not that great unless you get 'Don's. Mess.' My wife's pancakes were fresh, but she had difficulty cutting through them. They can do better.

You walk into whites and you don't have to wait to be seated... if there's an open table: go for it! But go fast because this little place fills up!! We arrived hungry at 815am (in the listing it said they opened at 8) and it was already half full! There is convenient parking on the side so that's always a plus. Well- we chose our booth and were quickly and happily greeted- we got our menues and chose wisely... do not miss their biscuits and sausage gravy if you like that: it was SO GOOD!! My partner had a hearty appetite so he got the #15: 3 biscuits with gravy, 2 links and 2 eggs... a lot of food!! I got the light #1 that was perfect for me: 1 egg, 1 link, 1 toast and hashbrowns... We both got coffee... and our breakfast was brought to us fast, delicious and plentiful. What a fun homey atmosphere. Locals would come in and greet the waiters and some other locals in other tables... this is the place for a traditional diner-style breakfast and lunch in Salem! Oh look: there's some bar seating in the back! Cute!!

Wonderful little diner with delicious food and RYE toast . I loved everything and I got to see the biggest omelette ever. Attentive and sweet waitresses.

White's is the only restaurant that I've ever given a five star rating. Everything and I mean everything they serve is phenomenal! My favorite is Don's big mess, it's pretty much everything you could ask for on one plate. The service is great and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. Reminds me of how eateries used to be when I was a kid.

A very classic American diner cafe. Took my dad and he reminisced about coming here in the 40's. A clean establishment with friendly attentive staff. While I have been here a handful of times myself, I know I will get good hearty meals. Portions are more than ample and prices are very reasonable. I had the breakfast schnitzel special. Two breaded pork cutlets covered in sausage gravy, 2 Edda, shredded hash brown potatoes and choice of toast, biscuit or English muffin. I was only able to eat my English muffin, both eggs, half the potatoes and half a single cutlet before the rest went in a box. Dad got a Belgian waffle with strawberries and whipped cream. It smelled delicious and he ate it all. If you have never been it is a great option.

Beware! Check your bill! They are overcharging and will not tell you! Just got back from White's and will never go back due to them not posting the correct prices on the menu! I could not believe it when we went to pay the bill. They had jacked the price up on the bill without changing the price on the actual menu! who does that? is this even legal? And then they tried to argue with my wife about it when we brought it their attention. We are aware that the price of eggs and other things have went up, but you need to change your prices on the menu to reflect that! Pretty damn lazy, service was terrible, food has always been subpar, and the place has really went downhill.

This is a no frills wonderful spot for breakfast! You can tell a lot about a breakfast place as soon as you walk in, and yes, there was a good crowd of regulars there. Sometimes this can backfire with service but not in this case, wish I got the sever's name because she was great. The food was timely and very very yummy! I have to say Salem has some great breakfast places but Whites is one that has been around for a long time and it is easy to see why. So, go treat yourself, you will be happy you did!!!

The food was so good. The service was on point. Our server was great. She was funny and very nice. The amount of food was perfect and the atmosphere was definitely a small town vibe.

It has been FOREVER since I have been here and when a friend suggested it as an option for lunch I was excited to give it a go. Since I was a kid this place has always been a favorite, even if not often visited, place for breakfast or lunch. It was super busy with Saturday morning breakfast so we sat at the counter and that just added to the nostalgia that seeps from this place. Food was great (I had the corned beef hash and eggs) as was the service at this classic hole in the wall, old school diner.

Definitely a very busy place and kind of small inside for the amount of guest...but how can it not be?! They have friendly staff, good prices and good potions. Will be returning. The foods delicious.

Okay I love Whites. The food is amazing and the service is superb except for this one girl. She is about 45 with brown hair and I believe her name is Tiffany. Everytime I get her as my server I am disappointed, she has a negative attitude which sucks when everything else about this place is phenomenal. I saw her being rude to the table in front of me this morning. Definitely does not belong in service.

Good breakfast. The corned beef hash was out of the can though. The rest of the food and coffee was good. They had good service.

The place was extremely loud, it was packed. We only waited about ten minutes tho. Our waitress was very sweet but she even had a hard time hearing us lol. It was bright and clean, nice place. I ordered the chili hamburger which was very good and my husband got the whites jumbo burger. We both got tots, they were nothing special, nice and crispy tho. His burger was good but lacked some flavor....said he thought it could of had some sauce or something?

An absolute gem of a spot in the heart of Salem. All I really needed on the morning I visited was a delicious, hearty meal in a subtle, inviting environment. White's is just the place for that. Right off the bat, I knew what I had to order - Don's Big Mess, which came "before there were skillets or scrambles." It's the whole deal. Bacon, sausage, ham, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, and hash browns grilled together and smothered in White's famous sausage gravy, served with toast, a biscuit or English muffin. Oh also, an egg on the top. It was so damn good. Generous portion, too. Whatever the heck they used to season it all was brilliant. There was just the perfect amount of gravy. I've got to try and recreate this at home, I'll be lucky if I make it half as good. ***I got the Mini version, it was only $11.75. My husband got the 2 Egg Meal ($6.95), which came with lots of hash browns and toast, and enjoyed every bit of it. Like my dish, generous portion and super well seasoned food. Even though it was the only place I ate breakfast while in Salem, I would highly recommend it over others. Lots of regulars, and very decent prices for large amounts of delicious food. Super nice servers, too! I will def be returning for more!

At least they're up front. "White's" is definitely food for white people by white people with the amount of seasoning (none) you'd expect from white people. I wouldn't say the food is bad but I found myself BEGGING for some type of flavor from my biscuits & gravy and pancakes. Have we even heard of salt!?

Lots of food for your buck. Flavor is a bit bland. But great service! We enjoyed breakfast there.

Ok so this was my first time here and willing to try it again I am going to blame this on me ordering the wrong thing. We got there at noon and the pace was very busy and almost everyone had breakfast on their plates. Great portions and everything looked great. I had a burger as I wasn't in the mood for breakfast at noon. No idea why I ordered one but got a chili burger . What I got has a bowl of chilly with a burger somewhere at the bottom. It was good fresh chili but ya can't call it a burger. Next time breakfast all the way! And I'll revisit this review

Oh man talk about a neighborhood gem...I found it today folks. This modest looking small Diner since 1936 is a must visit. The menu is large the portions are large...the staff is incredibly hard working and they all love their jobs. Our server Tiffany calls her work her second home and she genuinely smiles while she takes your order and serves you. Quick on your refills and checks on you every 10 minutes without fail. Even the bathrooms are spotless. This is a locals mostly place but they serve everyone. I have been to many restaurants and in my opinion if you miss out here...well I feel sorry for you...Prices are modest on all their menu items...Please come and tell them a local Don Mason invited you to come by...

Yummy, friendly, CHEAP! The place is underwhelming, but the service, food, and prices are awesome. Omelette had lots of veggies and bacon, and the breakfast sausage was a really big serving! Might be the only place left with a ten dollar omelette ‍

The wait here is a bit ridiculous, only two servers and they are not very friendly to some of the guests! The food gave me food poisoning and it was the biscuit & gravy, I won't be back!

I visited this restaurant on April 21 as I had an audiologist appointment earlier that morning. I attempted to go to another nearby breakfast place, but they had insufficient parking. The minute I walked through the door. I had a choice of either waiting to be seated or us to see myself. I seated my self and looked around at the busy restaurant. I arrived around 9:30 AM, and before I left, the place was almost full. The reason why: very busy, yet friendly servers, a perfect portion of food, and all the food was very good. The next time I need to visit Salem in the morning, I will be sure to stop by for another very good breakfast! Apparently there were many regulars in the restaurant, and one actually welcomed me and said you will like this place. He was right. Sorry, no pictures, I was hungry! Plus a shout out to my server, she was great and provided very good service, considering how busy she was. She had dark naturally curly hair, and she is an asset to this restaurant.

I'm a traveling executive and eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 40 weeks a year over a 25 year period gets old after a while. I love a great steak with a bottle of wine but one of my favorite meals happens to be breakfast and where better to do that than in a classic diner like Whites? The service is friendly and fairly quick but be advised, this place gets busy and filled up for breakfast and lunch so if you're looking for a quiet lunch to unwind, this may not be the best choice. However, if you want a great meal at a fair price, step right in! I happen to love steak and what better way to do that than the sirloin steak and eggs breakfast. Feeling really hungry? Get a biscuit and gravy with it or a pancake the size of your head. Lol. There are no bad choices here other than to pass this place up. Enjoy!

Wonderful, homey restaurant specializing in breakfast and lunch. I got the mini "big mess" and it was more than I could eat. I'm looking forward to my next visit to try the biscuits and gravy. I definitely recommend this place.

I'm excited to try out this restaurant after reading all the great reviews on Yelp. My husband and I came here before watching he famous total eclipse. We got here long before it opens. The waitress actually opened up about 10 mins before 6am for us. The staffs are all very friendly. It was a crazy morning with all hear people coming here for the ellipse. The line gets long real fast like 10 mins so get here before they are opened to get a seat! I had the corned beef hash breakfast and love it. They gave me a big serving of corned beef. Hash brown was a good serving but could have been more brown. I suspected that the chef was rushing the orders that morning. It is a great place to have breakfast. We will definitely go back again.

Got the big pancake breakfast, and if you aren't a big eater stick to the regular one with two pancakes! These pancakes are big, and there's 4 of them with (as I ordered it) 2 link sausages and 2 bacon strips with scrambled eggs...I ate the meat and eggs, and about half the pancakes before finally tapping out! My father got the regular 2 pancake version and he couldn't quite finish the last third of the cakes. The service was pretty good, not intrusive but attentive. The prices were pretty standard diner prices. Or two meals, one with coffee and one with a large coke was just over $24. Next time I'm in town I'll be in for breakfast again...I have my eye on the French toast... or maybe the waffles... or the biscuits and gravy.... Guess I'll have to come back a few more times!

I had their clam chowder today and it was absolutely delicious! It was better than some I've had in Boston. And the service was great.

One of my favorite breakfast restaurants in Salem. Their prices are equivalent to your typical Denny's, but their menu, portions and flavors hit a home run every single time (shows they're really big on consistency). They're pretty busy throughout the week, especially weekends so expect to wait a little, especially if you're coming with a large group. The servers/hosts are friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. Since this location is very busy most times, the staff are efficient at getting people in and out without making you feel pressured to hurry. They're very knowledgeable about the items on their menu and if you're feeling hesitant about how large their portions are... they do mention the half portions! I've been here a handful of times, but I always get the same things. This includes Don't Big Mess (half mess, which can feed 2-3 people), along with their sourdough toast with pancakes.

I been going to White's Restaurant at least twice a month if not more. Love the food and service until the last week and to day. The service dropped off a little. Maybe they're short handed. But today two elderly gentlemen walked in and wanted to sit at booth. The waitress told them to sit the table or wait outside. The went outside and they cleaned the front corner booth. The elderly gentleman came back in and sat down in the corner booth. The waitress yelled at these poor guys in front of everyone in the restaurant for not asking. I've been there many many times and they always say find seat anywhere you like. Felt really bad for the two gentlemen. My friend went over to them and apologized to them for being treated like that. There's other places to eat down the street.

Just a great place for good wholesome breakfast. Next time I'm in Salem I will get the special

I love local diners and seek them out any time I travel for business. I was in Salem and White's Restaurant was suggested by several locals as a great breakfast place. They advised that it has been around for decades. Upon arrival, I was encouraged to grab any available seat. As soon as I sat down, a waitress stopped at my table and advised that I was a man who looked like he needed some coffee...she clearly knew me well. My coffee was served fresh and steaming hot in a matter of seconds. I am a sucker for homemade hash and ordered their version. The plate was served promptly and piping hot. It consisted of the hash, 2 eggs, 2 bacon slices or sausage patties and toast. The food was excellent. I believe the hash plate was $12 and the coffee was $3. The price was well worth the quality and quantity of the food served to me. If you are ever in Salem and in need a a good old fashioned breakfast, you could do no better than White's Restaurant. Highly recommend.

The food is always good. My husband loves the Dons big mess. I haven't found another restaurant that compares.

This was a great find! The wait staff are the sweetest most attentive ladies! The food was great, the price shocked us as our total bill came out to $50 for a family of 4.

The eggs, pancakes, hashbrowns & coffee were great. Very pleasant waitress & reasonable cost too!

Service wasn't the best, not sure if they are against lesbians or not but we had to ask for more coffee and napkins. The lady who took our order never checked up on us it was another server who did which wasn't so bad. Getting our food my eggs were sooo cold as if the plate was sitting awhile before being served to me. Definitely won't be coming here again.

Delicious consistent breakfast. The only part that is hit or miss is the big mess. It seems like it's whatever they have on hand. Regardless, it's our #1 go to spot!

One of the best chicken fried steaks. Biscuit and gravy is good. Can never go wrong with omelets and French dip sandwich. Service is always top notch. The waitress is super outgoing and friendly. Food arrives sometimes quickly, sometimes at a reasonable amount of time. Never had to wait too long. It's a diner setting; mostly clean and kept. In the morning, you have your regulars retirees socializing before it gets busy.
