Man, do I want to love Whitey's. I really tried! It's just not going to happen. The place itself is not the issue - I love that as soon as you walk in it feels like you're back in the old Nordeast, filled with all types of people from all walks of life, with beer from decades ago still leaving its pungent olfactory mark on you, and it has a killer-awesome old bar.
The problem is the food. It isn't BAD, it's just not GREAT for the price. Every time I've been here (granted, I've only ventured in for brunch), I feel like I am going to be getting an inexpensive brunch in my 'hood. Unfortunately, I always end up spending as much as I do at higher-priced (and higher-quality) restaurants, except without the satisfaction of having just eaten a delicious meal. The huevos were so-so. When I asked our server if they came with beans, she looked at me like I was IN-sane. It's just a pile of eggs (50/50 chance of them being cooked the way you want them), salsa, likely an entire brick of cheese, a tortilla or two, and some other toppings. They aren't bad; they just aren't what I expected for the price.
The biscuits and gravy are pretty awesome. I might have just had bad luck with the other food, and will definitely come back for dinner to give Whitey's another go (I hear the burgers are worth trying), but Whitey's brunch and I need to accept our irreconcilable differences. The atmosphere is 5-star in my book (minus the surplus of hipster kiddos), but the food has some catching-up to do.
For you drinkers out there, the bloody mary is good, as are the martinis. Otherwise, it's pretty standard bar fare. Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal.
