Whitey's Old Town Saloon

We were looking for late-night food and this spot came highly recommended since their kitchen stays open until midnight. On our first visit, the food was great—probably some of the best bar food in the area! However, the customer service felt a little lacking. On our second visit, the experience was unfortunately much worse. We arrived around 11:45 PM and tried to order at the bar. Despite standing there for 5 minutes, no one acknowledged us. When we finally got someone’s attention, she said she wasn’t serving the bar and was busy with tables. So we seated ourselves and looked over the menu, still hoping to order. After waiting another 15 minutes at the table with no service, it was now past midnight. A staff member finally came over, only to tell us that the kitchen was closed. We were disappointed because we arrived before midnight and tried multiple times to place an order, but were ignored until it was too late. I understand it was a busy night, but guests shouldn’t have to chase down service or be turned away after waiting that long. The food is genuinely good, but the service really needs improvement.

I now divide my life in 2 categories: the days before I went to Whitey’s Old Town Saloon, and the days after. Your life is incomplete if you have not been. Get Freddy’s crunch wrap or the burger. And the best drinks in town. Pro tip: They will play the movie “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” if you request it

“The worlds best espresso martini” isn’t even in the top 5 in this city. Some of the other drinks were pretty great! But cool spot, good food and a nice location.

Decent enough I think. The vibe was good and the service was quick. I only had a drink with friends and the maple bacon old fashioned was interesting. The old fashioned itself was alright the bacon crumbles on top kinda threw me off. Picked it because it was interesting but I think it was a slight miss for me. Everyone else enjoyed everything to my awareness.

Tuesday jazz nights from 10pm-1am are one of my favorite recurring events in the city. It’s a great bar with a kitchen that’s open late. Casual vibe with friendly, no-nonsense bartenders.

Always great service, very good food and it's a cozy atmosphere. Just like an old school bar. Warm and perfect lighting. Great prices and delicious drinks.

One of my favorite bars in one of the best neighborhoods in Minneapolis! Connie, one of their great bartenders, talked me into trying a new pino noir and it was delicious! Always impressed by food, wine, and hospitality at Whiteys. I make it a point to regularly visit Jasmine as well.

On a day where I was processing the death of a friend. I walked into this establishment I was greeted by one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. I believe her name was Catie or Kat or Caitlin, but she and the other bar person Mack? Treated me like family. I was dealing with grief, and they brought laughter and beauty to a day that was to be filled with a devastating Vikings loss. To say I felt like I walked into a bar would be wrong, to say I felt like I walked into a home would be more accurate: the days are colder and darker: but Whiteys was a ray of sunshine.

Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner and some football. The space is awesome. If you are into dive type atmospheres but not an actual crap hole dive, this is the place for you. Long bar on the left and some tables on the right with a kitchen in back. The bartender was very friendly and prompt. My drink order was taken almost immediately after sitting down and she was right there every time it got empty. I ordered some fried pickles for an app. These were light, airy and crispy. I enjoyed them. Do be warned, however, these are little salt bombs. I also ordered a steak sandwich. Not crazy impressed with it. The cool/temp was perfect but it was a bit tough and chewy. Probably wouldn't get it again but would definitely go back and try something else.

A NORTHEAST HIDDEN TREASURE I've been to Whitey's plenty of times for drinks at night, (they have my favorite espresso martini), but after every other breakfast place was too busy on a Sunday morning, we stumbled into Whitey's. Wow! Who would've thought their breakfast is super tasty and VERY affordable. I don't think any meal on the menu was more than $15, and breakfast cocktails were reasonable too!. I had the scramble and it was so tasty! Eggs, sausages, peppers, etc. Wow. Their mimosas were top tier too!! If you haven't been to Whitey's, it's got a cool oldies bar feel. Worth a stop if you're in the up and coming northeast!

This was a stop while in town because old town saloon was in the name. The place is charming with a nice old bar,lots of dark wood, piano, fireplace and exposed brick. The bartender didn't watch the very well even though it was a week day afternoon and the place wasn't full at all because my empty glass sat empty longer than it should have. They have food which I don't try because I was going to the deli down the street.

This bar is such a vibe & the staff was super nice. They gave recommendation and I liked everything I tried. The gentleman behind the bar recommended the Espresso Matini stating it's the best in the world. It's good! We got wibgs. They had a few options for flavors for the wings. I enjoyed the buffalo which were crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle! I would grab these again! Brussel sprouts - I wouldn't mind if they were a bit more crispy but still solid. Walleye strips were alright as well.

Fabulous Espresso Martini! And great cheese curds as a snack. Good selection of beer as well

This is our local spot and we love it so much we had an after the wedding brunch here to celebrate! the food was amazing and everyone had a drink in their hand. Connie is the BEST bartender and such a staple at this bar/restaurant. Skip the fancy overpriced spots and get great service and food in the neighborhood.

This place has a fun, casual ambience, we had a great time! We had a Walleye sandwich and mac n cheese (if you are hungry order the large one), both were good. Like many pubs, their beer selection is 100% local Minnesota beers. Service was great, our waitress told us about Minneapolis and recommended another local pub near our hotel. She pointed to a customer and said: he works at a bbq restaurant and comes here for our ribs, it's really good. We are trying the ribs next time!

I thought the spot was great. I honestly went into it not thinking the food would be good, but I was pleasantly surprised. They had an espresso martini on their menu and that was surprising and it happened to be really good. We tried the burger, which was really good and filling, not the best I've had in the Twin Cities, but it was still good. They also had a crunch wrap supreme and we tried to pickle fries. The pickle fries were OK, I've had better but I thought they were still pretty good. I honestly really like the ambience of the spot. It was lively, it was busy, and there was a cozy fireplace next to where I was sitting, so it was nice and warm. My only qualm is the service was a little slower but I think they might be a little short staffed so just be expecting a wait if you go there on a Friday night. Overall, I really liked the spot and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a cozy neighborhood dive bar spot in the cities.

If you are ever in the NE area and are looking for a cheap lunch during the week with decent food and drinks, check this place out! We came in on a Monday and found seating right away at the bar. We were excited about the $5 lunch menu. My friend went with the cheeseburger and I decided to go with the roast beef sliders. The cheeseburger was very basic and straight forward. Nothing mind blowing but for $5, it was still a filling enough lunch. I thought the roast beef sliders were much better and I was surprisingly full from my meal. They have a decent selection of wine, beer, and all the rails you can think of to go with your meal. What we really decided to come back for the cocktail menu. I really enjoyed the pumpkin spiced russian but the drink that really blew us away was the peanut butter cold press. It's strong on the peanut butter and I would love having this along with my brunch or as an after dinner cocktail. Service both times we have been here has been excellent. Street parking only in this area so it can be tough. Plan extra time for parking!

I've been to Whitey's before but never tried the fresh squeezed juice and this time I had a Whitey's Mimosa and had to post about how great this grapefruit juice is! The only reason I'm giving it four and not five stars is that I don't know anything about their food. come for the grapefruit!

Patio is awesome. Lots of fried things on the menu. I had the mini corn dogs which were amazing and not from a box. The fried pickles were also good.

Such a good bar to cozy up at! Live music almost every Sunday night, Alex Rossi and Myra and the Moonshiners typically play. I always get the impeachment shots and van damn!!! shot, they're strong and delicious. The food here is also awesome and cheap. The burgers and the Cobb salad are my go to meals. This place is a gem amongst the NE and all the new renovations.

Looking for an amazing Cubano? Whiteys has the best one I've tasted! And their cream cheese jalapeño wontons are fantastic.

Delicious fried Brussels Sprouts!! No need for a "reservation" unlike their stray dog neighbors... Great bar snacks and sandwiches with a fun selection of drinks. Thanks for having us guys!

Whitey's so far has survived the encroachment of Minneapolis's unending appetite for bulldozing old time establishments (Nye's?) in favor of high density mixed use development. All the food is good - the sliders, the beef sandwich with jus, the fries, the chicken sandwiches.....plus a great draft menu to boot with a combination of local and national craft beers (Bell's Two Hearted!) Parking is tough in this area so prepare to feed the meter. Hang in there Whitey's! We need places like you to connect to Minneapolis's past.

Randomly walked into this restaurant for dinner and had a great experience! Ordered the jalapeno cream cheese wontons and YUM!! They have great cocktails too! I got the Nicollet Island Iced Tea! 10/10 would recommend!

Young bartender is rude. Didn't have the liquor I ordered. Substituted it, never told me. Set it in front if me. I sipped it. Realized it was NOT what I ordered and asked what the is this? She got mad at me lol kicked me out because I didn't like the drink I never asked for. NEVER go there again!

Good place with excellent food and service. Tried their walleye sandwich which was well made. It came with a selection of sides and I went with the fruit. It came with decent sized fresh pineapple and cantaloupe slices and grapes. Was happy with the quality, quantity and the price.

By far my favorite neighborhood bar in Old Town. Food is excellent, great specials, super friendly staff (even Andy). and love the live music on Tuesday and Sunday nites!

Years back I came here occasionally for their turkey burger, which was good. More recently though I've had the French onion soup which was mediocre, and yesterday's breakfast was also mediocre. Eggs Benedict: way too much sauce, covering the whole plate. The hash browns were okay but a very small portion. With a proper amount of hollandaise sauce the potatoes could have been on the same plate. The 'fresh squeezed' OJ was thin and the coffee a tad weak. It's getting cold here now and they had their ceiling fans on high which seemed to be circulating cool air so the food cooled down too quickly. We were a big group, maybe thirty people, and the waitress handled it fine. I won't be rushing back, that's for sure.

From the 'burbs and want to "explore" NE? Well, this spot might be just for you. There's nothing to really say about it other than it's a solid bar with ok food and TVs in case your bracket is doin gwell and you are with a bunch of people who couldn't care less. The food is ok, nothing to write home about, but it's solid bar food none the less. I seem to be ending p here regularly but with no desire to do so. I'd rather be pub crawling around other joints in the hood, but my pack seems to be intimidated by the idea of me being tour guide for a night. That must end soon.

Whitey's is another one of our office staples for lunch. According to my lunch ordering regulars, they have the best BLT and best cobb salad in town. I have yet to partake in Whitey's BLT, but the cobb salad is a close second to the Blue Door Pub's cobb. The bacon on Whitey's cobb salad is thick and crispy, which is a hard mark to hit. I can only imagine how awesome the BLT must be. The staff at Whitey's is always very patient and accommodating. I've got picky eaters on my hands, and they always listen attentively to the changes I need made (no onions, extra dressing, etc...), and the kitchen always gets it right. Pricing is fair - you get a lot of food for the $10 you pay for an entree. If you order fruit with your sandwich, be prepared for a treat. We always get whole slices of pineapple or melon, often with berries or other fresh fruit. It's not your typical sad cup of canteloupe and grapes from last Sunday's brunch leftovers. Dining in can be hit or miss - I've had great service at Whitey's, and I've had poor service at Whitey's. The food is consistently good, and I'll definitely keep ordering for lunch.

" CORNER" BAR FOR SURE !!!! It's on a corner.............. My first time here, and I'll give it a solid 4 stars! But because of the dim light, I can't tell you how clean it was or wasn't. But then again, I look fabulous in dim light ! Talk about laid back on a Sunday evening, totally comfortable and not super packed. We even found a close parking spot. I was there with daughter, and we split a $7 salad that could have fed a family of 4, and one of the best walleye sandwiches I've ever had. No batter on the fish, just pure unadulterated, FISH ! On a tasty hoagie roll. Yum. And again, frickin tater tots. I think I might have to go to a support group meeting to lay off the little tater gems. We almost ordered the fruit instead, but, our better sense took over :-) So this HUGE wooden half naked lady , larger than life, is mounted above the bar with a NO SMOKING hanging. Looks like it is straight out of a Stillwater bar, the old Ruby Begonias. Hilarious. The whole place is hilarious. Except the food.... it is damn good. Next time, the TURKEY BURGER !!! Our server was also laid back, but still was on top of everything. We actually relaxed here. Probably because there was nobody to impress or to be impressed. Perfect. Too bad I missed the restroom signs, again, hilarious. I'll be back. P A C K E D F U L L O F O L D T I M E C H A R M !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been a long time patron of Whiteys, and have tried many things over the years. Pros and cons: Pros: -Great atmosphere, large open space with a few screens. Lots of light coming in, good people watching, and Comfortable spacious bar seating, and a fireplace for the colder months. -The fresh fruit is always on point. -The salsa is really good, and I believe homemade. -Monthly specials always vary. -I find the modest beer and wine list refreshing. In a city with 100 craft beer options at most places, I actually appreciate a shorter, more thoughtful drink menu. Cons: -The food is very hit or miss. I've had a few things that were awful (Caesar salad with wilted romaine, a coconut banana pie that tasted weirdly like garlic...) and a few that were very good- namely the shrimp and with dill and cream cheese lavosh appetizer. -The fries are the skinny McDonald's style. good if you like that but it's not for me. -The service can be spotty if you're sitting at a table. -They used to offer crab/shrimp artichoke dip, and quesadillas but they are long gone! I still miss them. -the street Parking can be tough. But they do offer a small lot after 6 pm M-F, and all weekend. Overall, I can recommend Whiteys if you want a low key place to catch a game, a drink and a bite to eat. It won't blow your mind but it'll probably be at least relaxing and enjoyable if you're not expecting too much.

The waitress was ok As far as the food I ordered a cheeseburger and tater tots and the tater tots was the only good meal I also seen the bartender went into the kitchen area and grabbed some food from the grill without even washing his hands (Gross)

It's a bar. After dining across the street at MASU this was a close option for ONE MORE drink with the girls and to meet up some friends! Only $5 for my Vanilla Vodka Diet. I like that. Maybe I'm used to Vegas' steeeeep drink prices. Whatever. My drink was good and it was just a regular ol' chill bar atmosphere. I also really enjoyed the bathroom door decor for the men's and women's bathrooms. Yes.

I've been coming here for over 20yrs, since I was in college. Good atmosphere, old comfort feel with original bricks. I love their breakfast, drive about 45 minutes from home to come here on the weekends.

Super adorable! I enjoyed the patio of this place and there is a lot of room inside and nice and open. The food... delicious!! If you like mushrooms - you MUST order the mushroom martini (and order an extra order of bread you will probably need it)!! It was delicious! And if you like spicey, try the Jalapeno Cream Cheese Wontons - they had major kick of spice. We didn't try their entrees though. They have an alright selection for taps, but nothing that amazed me. I love this place!

Hands down the best bar in the entire world. The staff is what really makes it- literally everyone there is a peach. They're still making food despite all the closings, so I'd highly suggest picking up a roast beef sandwich if you're in the neighborhood. Much love for this place always!

Staff really makes a place and this place is made very well. Great bartenders, servers and regulars. Can't think of a better place to grab a beer or sip some whiskey while listening to live music on a Tuesday or Sunday night.

Oh Whitey's... I didn't want to do this to you. But my recent visit has really got me down. I came to you with 8 friends on a Friday night. This was ambitious, I realize. But you had room and were so inviting. We all ordered dinner and I mentioned to our server that we needed separate tabs. She nodded blankly. The food was so very average. There was nothing that stuck out, nothing interesting, nothing creative. It wasn't full that night yet we went an awful long time with empty drinks. And, finally, the bill. What a mess. It was a hand written list of things with prices next to them that we were expected to decipher and compute. Of course we messed up (because 8 people, food, and booze) and were short money. We tried again. The server grew impatient. I understand. PLEASE get a computer system.

Great bar food and fantastic service, we will be back!

Man, do I want to love Whitey's. I really tried! It's just not going to happen. The place itself is not the issue - I love that as soon as you walk in it feels like you're back in the old Nordeast, filled with all types of people from all walks of life, with beer from decades ago still leaving its pungent olfactory mark on you, and it has a killer-awesome old bar. The problem is the food. It isn't BAD, it's just not GREAT for the price. Every time I've been here (granted, I've only ventured in for brunch), I feel like I am going to be getting an inexpensive brunch in my 'hood. Unfortunately, I always end up spending as much as I do at higher-priced (and higher-quality) restaurants, except without the satisfaction of having just eaten a delicious meal. The huevos were so-so. When I asked our server if they came with beans, she looked at me like I was IN-sane. It's just a pile of eggs (50/50 chance of them being cooked the way you want them), salsa, likely an entire brick of cheese, a tortilla or two, and some other toppings. They aren't bad; they just aren't what I expected for the price. The biscuits and gravy are pretty awesome. I might have just had bad luck with the other food, and will definitely come back for dinner to give Whitey's another go (I hear the burgers are worth trying), but Whitey's brunch and I need to accept our irreconcilable differences. The atmosphere is 5-star in my book (minus the surplus of hipster kiddos), but the food has some catching-up to do. For you drinkers out there, the bloody mary is good, as are the martinis. Otherwise, it's pretty standard bar fare. Bottom line: Whitey's is absolutely worth the experience, but you're better off going in with no expectations and being pleasantly surprised than expecting a 5-star bar meal and ending up with just another regular ol' bar meal.

All I can say, is holy strong drinks. I don't know if this is the norm, but I actually had to ask the bartender to add some soda to my drink. He laughed and said that is how he liked them. However, I am not complaining. I sat at the bar so I can't comment on the wait staff and I didn't eat dinner either. I came to drink. I will say, the dudes sitting next me had ordered dinner and their food looked delicious and amazing. Oh and I find the lady bolted to the top of the bar a bit disturbing, but amusing at the same time. She looks like she might take a chunk out of the bar. If that thing ever fell I would not want to be anywhere near it.

It's a solid neighborhood bar with better than average food. Nothing really outstanding but it's comfortable and lacks douchbaggy pretention. A good place for a couple of beers or drinks. Oh, and very good fresh squeezed juice.

I go back and forth with Whitey's. A cool bar on Hennepin Ave in NE Minneapolis. Across from the Bulldog. Within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. You will never have a problem finding a seat here (well, I haven't). If you're looking to get a seat on a weekend with no chance of waiting, Whitey's is your place. This doesn't mean they're not good. I've tried multiple items on the menu. Many of them are forgettable. Salads are so-so (but what salad isn't...well, see my review for Element Woodfire Pizza). They have pig wings, juicy and meaty, great sauce. They have a $10 bahn mi sandwich all fancied up, but it's hard to justify paying that much for a "decent" bahn mi. This place is more bar than restaurant. With that being said, drinks are good - cool dark atmosphere and just loud enough. I'm never too disappointed and I always come back.

I enjoyed my portabella sandwich almost as much as the view of the giant, scantily clad woman mounted above the bar. It was a pile of balsamic-coated veggies, with grilled onions and roasted red peppers trying to sneak out the whole time. I also tried a bite of my friend's walleye sandwich and immediately came down with a case of food envy. The fish was perfectly done with a crisp breading and a spicy aioli. Mmm... will order that next time fo-sho. As others have mentioned, Whitey's seems to be the homey, unpretentious antidote to our city's douchey bars. Granted, we didn't stay the whole night, but the crowd and the atmosphere seemed much more manageable than some of the other bars in NE. It was busy but not overwhelming. A couple of missteps last night: Our server was a bit surly, but our food came out lightning fast (especially for a party of six)... and the wait assistant/bar-back helping her was much more friendly. The beer is expensive and I don't think they have specials. The $6 Blue Moon pints were declared "a rip-off" by my friend, who paid more for her beer than I did for my vodka.

I for one, enjoy drinking in the shadows of the giant half naked beast-woman. Perhaps it provides the illusion of protection or a guardian of evil forces. Who knows. Anywho, I had never had tuna tataki prior to having it at Whitey's, and now I consider myself a seared tuna enthusiast. Thank you Whitey's for opening my eyes! I can walk here from my house and never miss an opportunity to do so. This includes during the last metrodome smashing snowstorm a month back. Drinks are inexpensive and the late night vibe fits the type of night where you wish to talk loudly and not offend a first date or an anniversary dinner at the table next to you. Btw, the bloodies are made from fresh tomato juice. While I find it refreshing, this may catch others off guard.

I love it for its great bar food and laid back atmosphere. The hipsters will be across the street at The Bulldog NE overpaying for their burgers and Stella. I'll be at Whitey's savoring either the pulled pork sandwich or the BBQ chicken sandwich. Perfect every time. Oh, and the Newcastle and Summit on tap are great compliments, too. The buffalo wings could be a little spicier, but the flavor is perfect and their homemade chunky blue cheese dressing more than makes up for it. I always get extra for my fries, which are always super hot and crispy. They're a little on the thin side, but they're the way I prefer them. Absolutely delicious. This is my favorite bar for bar food in all of Minneapolis. Oh, and hope you get the short-haired waitress with glasses. Your glass will never approach empty. She's great.

I've never had a bad experience here, but then again, I can not think of a time where I've felt like this place is amazing. The food was typical and what I was expecting. They really didn't go out of the way to make it that great (rightfully so, I mean, it's a bar). The service, wasn't bad but wasn't great. I always feel like I am asking for the bartender or server to stand on their head when I've ordered a drink. I mean, how hard is it to make a whiskey? But every time I've ordered, it's like they have to go to Scotland to get a new bottle. Come on, I know I'm not the "trendy hipster" but I'm not making your life a living hell. That being said, try the greyhound. They make a mean one.

Looking for a good turkey burger? How about a GREAT turkey burger? Well folks, Whitey's World Famous Saloon has what I am convinced are the best turkey burgers in town. They also have strong drinks (woohoo!!) and just about anything else you could want for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Their menu is extensive and everything I've had has been great. They are a nice change of pace (and food) from their neighbor across the street (Bulldog NE). Don't get me wrong - I love Bulldog, but sometimes I have found that their menu is a bit limited. My Whitey's Cool Stuff List: - You can get fresh fruit instead of tots, fries, salad, etc. if that's your thing - The turkey burger with pepper jack is AMAZING - You can get just about anything you can image for breakfast - seriously... try it! - I am told the bloody marys are good - Never as oppressively crowded as its neighbor across the street (hey I'm happy that both businesses are kicking butt. I just don't want to have to wait for 45 minutes for a table to open up or be smashed against the bar by frat boys on a Friday night....) - There is a weird big wooden lady above the bar. In my book this is a good thing.

I LOVE the ribs and chicken (BBQ and fried). The ribs aren't really slow-and-low like I normally prefer them, but they get nicely caramelized and the spicy barbecue sauce is really nice. The baked beans and slaw here are terrific too. The other thing here that is the best I've had in the Twin Cities is the Mexican-style corn bread. It is creamy, almost like grits in the center it's so moist, and the top is crusted with caramelized cheddar. AWESOME! Reminds me of my Southern home.

This might be a solid bar or good place for drinks, but enough things went wrong at a Sunday breakfast that I'd think twice (or three times) before coming back. It was a decent spot for breakfast, and how can you really mess up eggs or hashbrowns? We sat down at the first open table up front and it took the waitress more than a couple minutes to stop by with a menu or to take a drink order. My friend had a fruit plate (why he ordered this at a bar is beyond me!), and I had the classic of two eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. The bright spot was that the time from when we finally ordered to the food delivery was short -- always a plus during a busy time. However, maybe they should have taken an extra minute in the kitchen to get things right. The eggs were overdone, the hashbrowns were barely crispy on the outside and far from done on the inside, and I had to ask for my toast. When the waitress brought it, she said she hoped I'd ordered white because she didn't write it down. I'd ordered wheat but decided to take what I could get at that point. The toast was more like stale white bread with butter. My pal's fruit looked all right, though, but I thought $7.95 was a bit pricey. If a group of friends asked to meet for beers and maybe some snacks, I might be inclined to join them at Whitey's. But I can guarantee I won't suggest this place to anyone or go myself. Ever.

also, when we went to leave - the manager came running outside after us & announced that we still hadn't paid our bill. We had already paid our bill with our waitress & we explained this to him. He told us it was the other bill for the table nearby us. huh? we realized he meant a table of ccomplete strangers that were like 3 tables away from ours. We explained that it was just the 8 of us & we had no idea who those other people were. He said if we didn't pay the stranger-table's bill, he'd call the cops. Seriously? So bottom line, this table of strangers, must have walked out on their bill & now the manager was expecting us to pay for it. I might return if I'm in a mood to pay for the whole restaurants tabs!
