Whole Foods Gets Restraining Order Against Animal Rights Activists | Eater

"Located at 3000 Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, this Amazon-owned grocery has been the focus of repeated confrontations with animal-rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE). The chain sued DxE alleging illegal trespassing ahead of a planned week-long occupation, and a judge granted a restraining order barring DxE members from entering the property. Activists have publicized investigations—most notably a 2015 video alleging poor treatment of chickens at an egg supplier—and staged disruptive demonstrations (including faux-blood coats, bringing video into stores, and interrupting public events), while the company says those actions block aisles and registers, interfere with business, and put customers and team members at risk. DxE argues the Amazon acquisition prompted a tougher, litigation-focused response and says it will continue protests in some form despite the legal restrictions." - Whitney Filloon

This is the original Whole Foods in Berkeley, I believe. It’s been here for at least 35 years, probably more. The store could use a little bit of updating, but that’s not a big deal. But a bigger deal is that the parking is limited, and there’s really no place else to go except in their small parking lot, which is often full. This is not a problem unique to Whole Foods, many places in Berkeley have the same issues. The bakery is good. The hot food bar is excellent, I wish they still had a soup that they haven’t had in a few years, the butternut squash crab bisque, which was the best. Their pizza is excellent, and their selection of fish and meat is very good considering how small the store is. And like all Whole Foods, the produce is excellent, albeit a little bit pricey. Whole Foods in general tends to be on the pricier side, but their own store brands are reasonable and good.

I want to give them 5 stars but they're not vegan and animals are suffering to be made into nuggets and steaks so they get 4 stars. There is a fairly extensive selection of toys for young children. The Amy's vegan Bahn Mi sandwich a new item looks good. I want to try the liquid turmeric by Qunol. There is a vegan refrigerated case of mock meats and vegan mayo.

Damn this place is expensive. Well above 2x the price I'd expect to pay in a sane supermarket. And their supposedly super healthy stuff still has added sugar cane sugar (oh so much better than high fructose corn syrup)

My roomie lost his phone after being at Whole Foods. Its an old phone that doesn't ring very well. It wasn't turned in at the store, so he went back the next day and the wonderful person at customer service showed him how to "find his phone" using my phone. It was found and had fallen out of his pocket in the apartment as he went to put groceries away. Thank you thank you thank you, as now he can go trade his old phone in and get one that actually rings when you call it!

Ideal situation for this chain. No-frills site with a low square footage, easily navigable and memorizable. Historic building, formerly the site of a beloved Berkeley Co-Op. Parking lot security and electric vehicle charging. Spacious bathrooms need to be cleaned more than 3x per day. At present not sure they are. For some reason, there are frequent public disturbances at this corner, and I’ve seen police and fire department presence more often that one would expect.

If you are black, the manager will send the security to follow you around the store! I didn’t grab a basket because my baby just needed milk. I walked in with a scarf on my head, so I guess that’s a target. I came in 3:30 on July 30th, very disappointing. Will never come again.

Google
This Whole Foods could use a little love but overall it’s clean and gets the job done they have all the essentials. Be mindful of some homeless loitering around. Parking lot is a little small Other than that it is what you would expect.

Google
This store has a very strange vibe. Most of the staff seem very nice but last time I went there for avocados the security guard started following me around the store. The other customers felt very standoffish as if they were all judging me based on what items I got, I have never felt this way at the local trader joes or berkeley bowl

Yelp
I'm still pretty new to the "Whole Foods Market" and really enjoying it. I see that the stores follow the same model from location to location so I am sure that the reviews will be pretty much the same except for the location specific items. This store in West Berkley is pretty much a mirror of our store in Long Island, NY This store is perfectly located in a very large lot with a huge parking lot. The lot is busy and we had to look for a space since there are so many people here. The store is very big and very bright. They really make it a welcome place to do your shopping. Besides your standard groceries of canned items, boxed items, bottles and cans, they have an AMAZING meat and fish counter. Plenty of choices of both fresh and cooked items are right there. There is also a wide variety of sauces and spices so there is something for everyone. They have an amazing selection of fresh sandwiches and even a pizza oven for constant supply of fresh pizza. They also make fresh sandwiches on demand in their very complete deli. There is also a major selection of soups, salads, warm and cold food. Clearly you can spend hours here. The market is an amazing place and I look forward to coming here more times and just trying all their creations as I continue to come to Berkley. KUDOs to the team at Whole Foods Market

Yelp
Pizza station should have pizza slices ready or close to it. I came to get a slice at 4:45 and was hangry! I was told by the pizza guy he would make one and it would be :20. I shopped and returned in :30 and there was only a slice of cold pepperoni. He told me he would make one and it would be an other :30!!!! No pizza was in the oven he wasn't making any either. Since when does it take :30 to fire a pizza in a 700* oven?? I took the nasty slice of cold pepperoni and paid for it I threw 1/2 away. I asked when they stopped baking pies and he said 9pm. This guy is not doing a good job. The steam table didn't look fresh either. You need to step it up!

Yelp
Yes, it's genuinely surprising and frustrating to see bioengineered (or genetically modified) ingredients showing up in products at Whole Foods, a store known for promoting organic and natural food ideals.

Yelp
I am definitely not a frequent Whole Foods shopper. mostly because I don't much care for the organic label or higher prices but will shop here once in a while. The pros include doubling as an Amazon Return Center, access to EV charging, as well as a pizza oven. The cons include inefficient or broken EV chargers, and stinginess with their toppings on their pizza. The fact that they even have a pizza oven was new to me, but was a pleasant surprise and one that I may take advantage of again, considering they have a $12 one topping pizza deal on Fridays.

Yelp
For quick and easy access to healthy food options, Whole Foods is a No-Brainer. It's not the most affordable place to shop for groceries, so if you're on a tight budget I might not recommend. I love that I can scan rows of supplements hunting for the best option, while also banging out a grocery list, and snag a quick sandwich and or soup on the go. There are more than a handful of hot soup options, self serve, and for the sandwich you can order with a paper and pencil provided at the deli. The salad bar is also impressive (self serve); sushi too (grab and go). These options for food and deli are located at the right when you enter the store. Their produce section is dependably fresh, and nearly always stocked to max. This Whole Foods can get crowded so try to avoid certain hours like after 5pm on a work week. If that's unavoidable, go with the understanding you may be waiting down an isle to get to a register. They do have a good number of self check outs.

Yelp
Came tonight for my toogoodtogo bakery bag. It contained a loaf of banana bread, a box of brookies, a bag of soft baguettes . Erica, the young woman whom served me was super nice.

Yelp
The Customer Care reply is useless. There is nowhere on the wfm.com/help link to log a complaint. All links redirect to a FAQ page. This reply is just an empty show of customer service.

Yelp
Just trash now. The bakery items are 50% smaller but 30% more expensive. They no longer have employees who know how to bake as the items have all the same density and over baked taste. It's my closest store but we only go to buy certain items on sale. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Yelp
I'm normally in favor of shopping at non-chains or smaller businesses but this Whole Foods is less than 10 minute walk from my apartment so it is very convenient. I appreciate that the food is generally healthy and clean. I normally come here often to get salads or food from the hot bar. I find that quite convenient when I don't feel like cooking and the key to not paying a lot of money is to control your portion sizes when you're making yourself a salad or scooping hot food but generally, it still is a little pricey, but generally tasty and convenient. The meat and seafood section is quality. There is good sushi and overall great selection here I do have a complaint though, and this is just my pedestrian rage coming out, but I find it annoying Whenever I am in the store an associate is always in my way, whether moving their carts or stocking no matter where you go in the store there is someone in your way. It is a compact store so you just have to be patient and work around people. I know some people say that the vibes are off here sometimes, but I'm not sure if it's fair to place that on the workers here it's probably just more of an overall reflection of our sad Deteriorating society. People are overworked underpaid underappreciated, but I also think it's not just Whole Foods. The vibes are like this at many Oakland establishments. Customer service is not really the forte of California come on people. Let's just be honest.

Yelp
This is a review for Whole Foods Holiday Catering for our Thanksgiving family meal. Decided to try ordering my turkey meal this year because I didn't trust my availability to cook my own turkey, lol. Looked around online and saw Whole Foods was offering holiday catering. I was skeptical at first because price seemed very reasonable for a family meal for 4. I ordered a whole turkey with side dishes and really didn't expect much. On Thanksgiving Day, I came with the parents and picked up our meal from this particular Whole Foods location. Everything was packed neatly. I was so impressed by the quality of our meal. The 10 lbs turkey was made perfectly well, not dry at all! All the sides were amazing. Loved the green beans with shallots, cranberry sauce, stuffing, mashed potato, and gravy. I was so pleasantly surprised by both the quality and quantity of the food we got. Everything was so fresh and delicious! And we have leftovers for the next few days. Whole Foods Catering definitely saved the day and so much time and effort for us so we could focus on enjoying our meal and family time together. I recommended the catering to a friend and she loved it also. Thank you Whole Foods Catering! Will definitely order again next year!!

Yelp
Smaller store that is personality packed and seems to have it all. Small bakery, hot bar, and Christmas gift ideas on the end caps toward the back. Smaller store - there is less in stock of everything here - yet its so well managed that its not an issue - so no need to push or shove. Come to think of it - I don't ever think I've encountered anything less than pleasant in any Whole Foods is concerned. People who shop here are generally well mannered and patient. Even though its a smaller store it really doesn't feel that way. Ceilings are high and there are a bunch of windows in the front. Small bakery section had all your holiday bakery needs. German fruit cake and an Italian Rum cake included. The German Stolle is a substantial bread with some fruit in it. I've tried it here and its authentic and much more lower calorie compared to those heavy sticky sugary American fruit cakes. This year I opted for the rum cake - I suppose mainly since I haven't seen it at other locations. I'd say its similar to a very classy fruitcake - comes topped with candied fruit and lots of rum flavor baked in. Hot bar and pizza were in good supply as I visited around 7pm. Lots of toys and puzzles and crafts for good Christmas present ideas toward the back. Check out was fast and with a big smile. If lines are longer self check out was also an option.

Yelp
I was refused cheese. Sunday morning at 8:30 AM I arrive in the specialty department to buy some blue cheese. There was no cheese displayed. There was no team member present. After several minutes of waiting I flag down a worker with long hair and a small beard near the meat department holding a clipboard. He seems annoyed, and soon comes back to tell me that nobody can help me. Now, I've worked in customer service, in fact, I used to work at this very store, in this very department! You don't EVER tell a customer that nobody can help them. So I ask if I can speak to a shifty (manager). The shifty (bald young dude) comes down and tells me I an unable to buy cheese until the afternoon because the refrigerator went out. Now I know they have cheese in the back they can cut me. There are no deliveries between Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon that bring fresh cheese. It was clear that the management would rather have me drive up the street to the other Whole Foods (Donna's store) rather than take two minutes out of their day to cut me a piece of cheese. This is abhorrent, terrible, and straight up lazy customer service. I couldn't imagine treating a customer like this. Things have really changed since I used to work there. We would have never just told a customer they can't buy something it would literally take two minutes to prepare. Refusing to service your customers and telling them they cannot buy something is NOT good business! I wasted 20 minutes only to be told I am not allowed to buy cheese.

Yelp
I live in the area so it's very convenient. However, except for the bakery and deli, the general staff are very unfriendly and unhelpful, and items continue to be poorly stocked.

Yelp
I like to do my grocery shopping in the morning before work, and normally go to the Temescal location but decided to go to this location as it's slightly closer to my house. The whole time employees are following me around because I have my own personal grocery bags (mind you I had my items in the cart and not in the bags!). There were a few things I couldn't find but honestly they had put such a bad taste in my mouth I didn't want to ask them for help. I wandered the aisles multiple times looking for what I needed. I think the layout of the store and the aisles doesn't really make sense. I like to buy these fiber brownies and figured they'd be in the bakery section. But no they were in the bread and cheese aisle. On a top shelf. Not sure how that makes sense. There were a few things that made me think that with this store. They also had no cabbage aside from a premade pack of coleslaw. It doesn't even seem like they sell it as they had no signage for it. Just romaine and butter lettuce and some other greens. Honestly this store needs a lot of work and it helps if you ask EVERYONE walking in if they need help with anything. Don't just eye them and stare at them for 10 minutes before asking. Also I was the only one they asked the whole time I was in the store. Price was, Safeway and Berkeley Bowl beat this location given they have better customer service and have a better selection of goods. Temescal is normally pretty well stocked and the employees are slightly nicer. Just slightly. I like the location but it's not worth coming to this store. I'd rather drive farther away.

Yelp
We stopped by Whole Foods on the weekend to purchase some items since we had manufactured coupons. The parking lot was busy but we were able to find a spot quickly as people kept coming in and out. When you first walk in, there are self check out station and a guard. There is also a customer service station allowing you to return your Amazon packages. Inside of the store, the aisles were not labeled according, so it was tough to locate many items that I was looking for. Even though it was a busy store, the items in the store is always stocked and cleaned. While using manufacturer coupons at checkout, the customer service representatives and other store customers made me feel unwelcome and it felt frustrating. I carefully planned my budget and since some of the coupons were not taken, the total went over the roof. I would definitely go back if their customer service representative is trained better.

Yelp
A complete failure for curbside pickup. Waited 1/2 hour and still no delivery. The store manager provided the following: 1) She just started her shift. (Well, what does that have to due with anything?) 2) The current manager might be on a break. (Whatever!) 3) Did I check-in upon arrival? Maybe have a friend at home check-in. (WTF? Whatever do you mean?) 4) A very kind young woman who delivers the curbside apologized to me. (I said I appreciate it and it wasn't her fault.) 5) After shopping myself and driving home, I receded a text saying my groceries are ready for pickup. (It's now been an hour.) And this has happened to me once before.
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Went to pick up a holiday order and not very well organized at all. The staft were pleasant enough, yet several were scrambling around to get the order together. There was no signage or indication where to go when I arrived, and I logically ended up at Customer Service near the front door where they took the information. I had, as per instructions, checked in that I was on the way, yet it took 20 minutes after arriving to get it in place; and I was the first one there. The line was forming rapidly behind me. The order was complete, so can't complain or criticize... it just appeared staff wasn't well trained as to what to do. Oh well, glad I did it early!

Yelp
We LOVE WF home baked pastries, especially this location. So we were excited to found them on too good to go. we got two bags of too good to go pastries bags.....omg!!! they were terrible and disappointing!! We weren't expecting much but was hoping they would at least put a few pieces of their own bakery pastries. Especially we got two bags! Nope! All other vendor mini cupcakes and sugar coated junks! We literally tossed everything away. Totally defeats the purpose of not wasting. If that's the case, they shouldn't have advertised as Whole Foods bakery pastries! Total waste of money and time driving out there! Do not buy their too good to go packages....you will be disappointed!! Strongly suggest management to change the surprise packages to your own bakery items where you can advertise at the same time instead of outside vendor junkies! 2nd note.....this used to be our favorite burrito place...however, recent months, they have changed almost everything....the only meat they have is chicken. No steaks nor porks! And they only have 1 type of salsa! At first I thought they just sold out....nope! It does not matter what time you visit, lunch, dinner or off hours, only chicken!!! They said out of stock but that's not the case. They have the meat! they simply just don't make it! I think management is trying to save cost on everything which is bad as that's not the reason why people choose to shop at Whole Foods! 3rd note, deli staff were nice. But customer service of cashiers here totally needs improvement. Rude and not wanting to help at all. Especially the ones who seemed to be there longer or experienced. After a few unpleasant encounters, I chose to do self checkout every time just so I don't have to see their attitude faces and negative vibe!

Yelp
For not serving turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. How lame. I was counting on getting the turkey dinner at the deli buffet and they did not have it. They had some dry chicken and other lame items. Why do that?

Yelp
I shop at the Ashby and Telegraph whole foods fairly often because it is so close to my house. And I've been shopping there for about 25 years. It is by far the worst service of any grocery store in this greater area. Far worse than Safeway or Berkeley Bowl where you can search for a staff person for a while. Trader Joe's, star grocery, market Hall ($) I'll have lovely service. Last Tuesday I went into the store walked up to the bakery counter and ordered very carefully a cake with happy birthday written on it for pickup on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The person taking my order was very thorough was writing it down on a piece of paper that looked like a form and everything seemed great. On Friday I called the bakery department and said I'd like to pick the cake up at 10:00 instead of 1:00. They're ensued the most Kafkaesque experience I've had in a while. Suffice to say they claimed they had never received such an order. And they wondered if I was telling the truth about it. The woman on the phone tried time after time to convince me I had been at the other telegraph whole foods. I explained to her I had never been in that store that I always came to this store and that I had walked directly into it just a couple of days earlier. After quite a while on the phone they agreed they would make me a cake anyway with just one day's notice which they normally do not do. The cake was ready for me at 10:00 on Saturday. On Sunday I received a call from the bakery counter who said "we have a cake for you that you were supposed to pick up yesterday." -! None of this would have been that bad except for the manager who kept insisting that I hadn't made an order, I hadn't been in their store, I didn't know which store I was in, and I was perhaps making it all up.
google avatar

Megan T.

Yelp
the overall vibe from the staff is awful, everyone is so rude and it seems like no one wants to help answer any questions or even check you out at the cash registry. definitely do self check out if you come here and google your questions in advance, otherwise the staff will give you attitude for no reason. also, the least stocked Whole Foods location I've been to in a while! if you don't mind driving a few more minutes, I would say just go to sprouts or another Whole Foods location.

Yelp
I know what you're gonna say - why are you going to whole foods anymore anyway? So I got multiple coupons as a donation for a school event from a company. This company didn't tell me the coupons would state 1 per customer on them and when I asked the company if they could contact the manager of a store to confirm I could use them, their answer was "if you get the right person and they know you're getting these for a school event, AND that you receive them directly from us - the actual business, then I'm sure they'll let you use the coupons." well boy did I not get the right person. Regina over at Whole Foods Telegraph was NOT the right person. I was fine when she told me I could only use 1 coupon and I was apologetic when she stated that I was going to clean her out of her inventory and should've given her more notice. BUT then I asked if I could use 2 coupons and apparently that meant to Regina that I must be lying and not telling the truth that I was using the coupons for a school event. Mind you, I had an email from the company, evidence that I was actually from a school, but she decided to get murky and let me know that she did not believe me. Well I can tell you that I will NOT be giving money to Regina and this Whole Foods ever again, IF I give any Whole Foods any money ever again. Boycott!

Yelp
3 scoops of mac and cheese for 12 dollars is diabolical man, and someone shit over the seat in the bathroom and it stinks

Yelp
I would like to recognize Edwin, the fantastic pizza chef. My home is closer to the Gilman location, however, there pizza counter has been lousy for over four year's. Gilman's pizza counter is sad, pies look as dry as the desert. There is never much action at that pizza counter, and it's rare to even see fresh whole pies. Edwin is often pulling out a fresh pizza every time I approach the deli area. This works perfectly, allowing me to claim the entire pie, in the box it goes with a huge smile from Edwin. This employee has passion for his craft, I hope he is promoted to manager. He is humble, sincere, and I am sure others appreciate the consistency of this operation. Keep up the great work, I come to this store twice a week to shop!

Yelp
My go-to Whole Foods store on Bay Place and Harrison St. was sold out of the English short ribs that were on sale and the butcher did not expect another shipment before the sale ended. I decided to visit the next closest store on Telegraph. The parking lot is in front and wraps around to the right side of the store. This is a smaller store than Bay Place store. Entering the store, I noticed the meat department at the back and walked down one of the aisle, which were tighter. I saw the short ribs in the display case and the butcher came to help me. I asked for 3 pounds and asked for the thicker pieces, which he picked out for me. Then I requested that each rib be cut in half, which he said was no problem. There was a waiting line at the two cashiers, but I noticed that they had a self-check area, which was empty. I scanned my WF code, self-checked and was on my way. It was a good shopping experience, considering they had the short ribs. I guess I'll be coming here if Bay Place is out of stock on specials.

Yelp
Loud trucks for Whole Foods in the middle of the night leaving their engines running in the middle of the night with banging noises. In the back of their building. There are residential homes along the back side & they are being extremely disruptive. This has happened numerous times this year and they are ignoring the noise ordinances.

Yelp
My mom and I went to whole foods about one hour ago. There is a woman with tattoo sleeves and I believe she was wearing a beanie. She made the best sandwich I had ever eaten in my life. She was so patient with my order and made the most beautiful sandwich I had ever seen. She was kind and always smiling. I will come back here just for her magical sandwich skills. She is indeed a wonderful chef! I went back to order more sandwiches and her name is Dede. Such a wonderful person.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite place to shop with my family...I'd bring my friends here to shop. Some days I'd come get a cup of joe first thing in the morning. NOT anymore. This store has gone completely down hill with their selection of security guards...I was peacefully shopping when their security guard was constantly cutting in front of me like some kind of animal. I proceeded to shop & he has the nerve to ask me if I am alright as if I was doing something wrong. As I proceeded to walk out after over paying for some groceries...I was walking to my vehicle & the "security guard" if that's what you want to call him proceeded to harass me. Like I'm some sort of slave. I got to my vehicle & proceeded to pull out & drive towards the exit..this man had the audacity to Mr. penguin Waddle over to my vehicle yelling disrespectful things & as I roll my window down to understand the nonsense he is yelling. He did the hawk tauh to my vehicle...the worst part is he missed. Now I don't know what is more disrespectful him missing or him attempting to. I am not if I will proceed to shop here anymore..SHOP AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Yelp
Nice compact store with a small parking lot out front. We came here to pick up a birthday cake for my nephew on his birthday. It had been ordered weeks in advance and was not ready when we arrived. It took two guys and about 40 minutes to find the cake, find some icing to write Happy Birthday on said cake, and then find a box to put the cake in. All of that was sort of an ordeal that caused undue stress for the grandparents who were tasked with getting the cake for the birthday party. Once we tasted the cake we all but forgot the challenges we faced earlier in the day. It was probably the best carrot cake (with cheesecake frosting) I've ever had in my life. The macarons and ice bars at the entrance/bakery area were very enticing and I imagine I will try some the next time I'm there.

Yelp
This place gives me very discriminatory and racist vibes , I was definitely singled out and attacked . I ordered a cake online through Whole Foods catering online services for pick up two days prior , this was my first time ordering a cake online through Whole Foods.com which I'll probably never order from this location again if not at all . When coming to pick up my online order that I PAYED ONLINE , I went to the customer service desk , said I was here to pick up a online order . The lady asked if I payed I said yes , online . She looked confused and proceeded to take me to bakery where I was given my cake and was asked AGAIN if I payed and this baker also looked confused , i then showed the baker my online order and receipt and was given the cake . I then proceeded to grab some pizza and waited in a register line. When finally checking out and paying for my pizza ,I was asked again by the cashier this time if I paid for the cake , I said yes it was a online order . He then looked at me and said we don't do online orders and that there store does not do that and it's not possible . He begin asking to see the barcode underneath the cake to charge me AGAIN . At this point I was so confused and said how is that possible and showed him my online receipt and payment made on my bank account . At this point not only 1 person but 3 people where now at the register asking to see my receipt and bank payment and I gladly showed them . At this point I was completely humiliated , the assistant store manager RACHEL then told me that the baker was going to loose his job over the cake that was paid online , i told them that has nothing to do with me and your basically wasting my time at this point . The manager then said well you can leave ... I said Thank you . Rachel then called security and wanted security to walk me out .... Like WHAT LOL after everything I just went through for 15 mins I'm now being looked at as if I'm theft ??????? . This place has horrible customer service !!!!!!!!!!! Like come on if your going to work for a company at least be aware of the online orders that are coming in . I have no idea how any of that online stuff works all I know is that i was charged two days prior and was excited to pick up my birthday cake that I ordered online .To save CUSTOMERS the hassle of being completely discriminated against at the check out . Thank you !

Yelp
Very sad to see how far this store has declined. It was my regular go-to. But now, the shelves are often empty and most of their products are not organic or "whole". Worse, the historically friendly & helpful staff have been replaced by staff who seem desperate for the shift to end and not too interested in helping customers. An example: Yesterday I bought something that was marked on sale on the shelf, but no discount was applied at the register. Customer service made me unpack my whole bag to show them the item (even though it was on the receipt i gave them), then told me that the item i picked was not on sale (the item I picked had been mishelved & the sale misdescribed, I guess), & the actual sale item was out-of-stock. No apology, sympathy, or "thank you", just "nope, wrong item". This is just an example of the service there nowadays. The response to this message from Customer Care directs me to a site that doesn't have an obvious place to register a concern -- another illustration of a general lack of concern for customer experience.

Yelp
Staff was pretty cold and unwelcoming. (Security guard seemed nice). The cashier seemed annoyed that I came to her lane and broke up a conversation her and 2 other employees were having. Customer service same thing. Anywhoo, nice clean store. Expensive but I knew that going in.

Yelp
omg! I didn't know I would need a descaler for my fish from Whole Foods?! This is the worst experience I've had with their seafood, usually it's obviously taken off for chocking hazard purposes? Not to mention this Chilean Sea Bass was 50% bone. Again, is this supposed to be deboned before giving it to a customer? It was $37 and the pin ones wouldn't even come out w tweezers. yeesh, get yourself seafood somewhere else :/

Yelp
I haven't been here since the Gilman store opened. Actually, I came once or twice when in the area, but I've been to the Oakland store more. I don't like this store much. I get too triggered by the people there. But we went, the store has the same layout and I found what I wanted. Except for the ice. But, compared to Oakland and Gilman, the store is very small. The beer/wine selection is quite small too. The meat counter is OK. By comparing this store, to the newer ones, all I could see was what was different. I'm glad that this isn't my store.

Yelp
This WF is super close to me so I come here for quick things when I don't want to deal with BB or TJs. But it's the smallest WF I've ever been to. And the other Sunday, 30 min after opening, I waited in the checkout line for 20 min because only one line was open. Not a fan. I dropped off an Amazon return package once. The staff member was super nice. But she had to stop checking people out to help me at the customer service desk. Perhaps they are understaffed, which sucks for them and the customers. Also a senile old lady scraped my car in the parking lot 9 months ago. She wouldn't even have noticed if I didn't stop her. I'm grateful she paid for the damage ($3000!), but watch out for those folks who really shouldn't be on the road...

Yelp
Got home looked at my receipt and discovered I was charged for some thing I didn't buy now I have to go back and try to get a refund. Many of the employees are rude

Yelp
I know, I know, I'm updating a Whole Foods review, but alas, I feel I have to as I go here pretty much weekly. Room for improvement: their produce section is TEENY. Yes, this Whole Foods is smaller than most, but it's a Whole Foods, produce should be king! I also don't necessarily love their butchery items. Their sausages need work, meats don't ever seem too fresh and impressive; I tend to head to Berkeley Bowl for both produce and meats. I don't even mess with their deli or hot items anymore. What does reign is that the staff is usually friendly, prices are more than reasonable for all other goods if you shop sales and are a Prime member, which I am. They have a ton of options for those on all types of diets: gluten free, keto, vegan, plant based, etc.. Overall, I find WF to be in the middle: a cheaper and not quite as a robust option as Berkeley Bowl, but a little more expensive and better quality than Safeway, TJ's or Sprouts. There you go! I'm a fan. There is for sure room for improvement, but I keep coming back!

Yelp
Rude cashiers. No hello, or bye. Have had this problem a couple times, the younger adults look like they do not want to be working.

Yelp
I have long been a fan of Whole Foods. Me & my friend were in Berkeley looking to stock up on some groceries. I suggested we go to Berkeley Bowl yet she finds Berkeley Bowl a bit too crowded. It is true that Berkeley Bowl can be a bit crowded as is a popular place so she suggested we go to Whole Foods on Telegraph in Berkeley. I have never been & was open to it. So I was looking to pick up some shredded coconut as I used to cook at an award winning mostly vegan, vegetarian cafe in Boulder, CO back in the day. The cafe served a smoothie called the Berry Drunk Monkey that was made w/ chocolate soy milk, bananas, blueberries, flax oil, almond butter, & a secret to the presentation was the smoothie was topped w/ shredded coconut as a garnish. It was quite alright & very popular. So ever since then on the smoothies I make for myself most everyday I top them w/ shredded coconut flakes. This Whole Foods has a great bulk bin & was pleased to find three varieties of coconut flakes including small flakes, large flakes, & toasted flakes. All were organic & decided to try the toasted coconut flakes from Sri Lanka as don't normally see these. Besides the stellar bulk bins. I also stocked up on organic bananas for my smoothies. I was delighted to find organic bananas here for .69 cents a pound. As have seen conventional bananas listed elsewhere for this much & have seen organic bananas listed for as much as $1.34 a pound at another natural food store in the Bay Area which is nearly twice as much. My last purchase was some Clif Bars. Clif Bars are based locally in Emeryville, CA & have them on rotation on the protein bars that I will get from time to time. I was intrigued by the Seasonal Flavor Clif Bars including: Hot Chocolate, Spiced Pumpkin Pie, & Iced Gingerbread. They were on sale for $1 each. I decided to stock up on 20 of them. My stock including mostly Hot Chocolate kinds along w/ a couple of the Spiced Pumpkin Pie & Iced Gingerbread. The Hot Chocolate kind sounded sort of cool & was excited to try it yet found it tasted like chocolate oatmeal more than like a cup of hot chocolate that I was anticipating. Still all good & did find the atmosphere a bit more mellow than Berkeley Bowl although Berkeley Bowl is still my pick if in Berkeley due to the stellar gigantic produce department amongst the joy of grocery shopping in California in a former bowling alley. I won't hesitate to visit this Whole Foods again & experienced great customer service at check out to go w/ my purchases.

Yelp
The nicest Whole Foods that I have ever been to!!!!! It's so clean and organized inside, all of the employees are so friendly. Usually when you walk into a grocery store, employees keep their heads down and try their best to ignore you, but today I've had more than four people offer me help to find a product, and nearly every employee greet me.

Yelp
A good solid 3 stars. Decent amount of stock, but no one to help you at the self-checkout. Much inflated prices.

Yelp
I know they're doing their best out here - but for Whole foods not to have any hot dog buns (yes, I repeat, an Amazon-owned grocery store in 2023 cannot even be trusted in the bread department) and only green tortillas marked up about 95% is criminal behavior that I will not be a bystander to. I figured they could be trusted only in the event of an emergency, but after this it's not looking good - I mean, I spent a month and a half in South America and the food selection in Bolivia was more abundant. Thumbs down.

Yelp
Small, cramped parking lot, so people tend to park on the street (metered) or even in hospital parking. Service is non-existent. Took a ticket for the hot food service and the employee stood in front of me for five minutes without acknowledging me or making eye contact. Finally he waited on me but barely spoke to me. Then, when I was checking out, I asked the cashier if they had blueberries because I hadn't seen any in the produce section. She just said, "Yeah, they're there," without being any more specific or offering to get an employee to help me locate them. Two stars because the hot food is decent, if not somewhat on the pricey side.

Yelp
I posted about a lackluster sandwich experience here then I received an email from the corporate office offering a refund and I had to go back to the store since I don't have the receipt. But the store manager looked it up and it's my card and said anytime you have an issue they will happily address. It was a one time bad sandwich likely someone in training. But updated to five stars because that's some customer service.

Yelp
Unlike at the other Whole Foods they don't really pay attention to how many people are in line even at lunch rush. Or maybe it's just a day the are short of cashiers?? Otherwise most of the employees are nice!

Yelp
This store is laid out in a strange way. It has two story high ceilings which makes it seem big when in fact the store is all on one level. It is therefore a small Whole Foods location with limited selection in some areas. Employees were helpful. They have their own parking garage which I did not use.

Yelp
Hm...I didn't realize I'd been to this one before. It's funny to read my old reviews and see how they still stand. This WF is still small and limited and I'd definitely still prefer Berkeley Bowl to this. I mean, a few of the things I needed had just one or two options left on the shelf. Like the pasta section had only penne and lasagna. That's it. My Santa Cruz organic jam only had raspberry left. And there was only basmati or brown rice. Maybe I need to go on a weekend when inventory is more plentiful? BUT I'm still gonna give them an extra star now because the store was clean and not crowded at all, which is most important to me during COVID-19.
