Jersey City Is Getting its First Whole Foods | Eater NY

"Opening today, November 9, at 135 Greene Street at Christopher Columbus Drive in Downtown Jersey City, the new Whole Foods is a 51,000-square-foot store with a coffee bar, a roster of prepared foods, and more than 1,000 local products sourced from the Northeast; this particular location works with 12 local farms, offers 200 kinds of cheeses, and stocks local items like Paper Plane Coffee, Brooklyn Cured charcuterie, and Black Seed Bagels. The interior design is inspired by the city’s love of art, featuring images of the Hudson River nearby, and the shop runs a dedicated van to pick up rescued food for community organizations in need; the location is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and is part of Whole Foods’ network of more than 500 stores in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K." - Melissa McCart

Great place to shop with validated parking for 90 min when you spend $10. 5 min walk from Grove Path. Plenty of 365 products that are affordable and great quality. Check out the meat department for that old style butcher feel and buy some truffle butter to smother your steak in! Seafood has a special on oysters every Friday. Plenty of things to fit any budget

The store is neat and clean. It was well stocked when I got there. It is a bit crowded, which I guess means it's popular. It's for those who are into organic things and such. I had been excited about the salad bar and buffet area, but it turns out they have no plates, just boxes. They do have seating so I thought they would have paper plates. So I didn't get anything but a slice of pizza, which wasn't very good. All in all I will probably not go again, but I salute them for being clean and keeping to their mission.

Very nice new store. It’s really updated. On the top floor there’s an area to sit down and eat and even use the computer. The grocery store is wonderful. Make sure you get your parking ticket so you don’t have to pay for parking. Otherwise it’s $13. You have to spend $10 in order for you to get free parking. I was very happy that there’s a coffee station but I was not happy that I ordered cappuccino and it tasted like milk. I would think the size small would have the same amount of espresso as the larger size which is only $.50 more. That’s why the large size tasted more like milk. Maybe espresso was not used? Either way I have returned it because I could not get more espresso without paying more. This was not coffee. It was milk. I would have someone check it. Otherwise this looks like a wonderful store. I’ve been there several times during my visit. I would definitely be back again.

Update on January 6th, 2025. There was a time when Whole Foods was a great store before Amazon owned it. Just returned from vacation and went to get some groceries. There was nothing on the shelves. This doesn’t happen at Trader Joe’s. They prepare before the store opens. It was so frustrating to shop there on a Monday morning, note to self not to do it again and to get to Trader Joe’s instead. When I asked for help locating some produce, the employee told me he didn’t know if they had any that he just got there and continued loading his lettuce, not interested in helping at all. He said there’s nothing on the shelves because yesterday was Sunday and busy! Really? #TraderJoe’s please come to Jersey City! No fresh pizza dough! Sold out by 3:00. In the past in NY and CA, the pizza chef is happy to share the dough. Not here. Nothing in frozen either except cauliflower and almond crust. Only whole wheat in the bread section and nothing in front end. Now that owned by Amazon, service is down and unhelpful. #traderjoes we need you! Please come to Jersey city! Update: On Sunday June 8 and Monday June 9 there was so many bear shelves once again. Heard on the news that this was due to a cyber security attack on a distributor. No signs warning shoppers except on empty shelves. Have not heard a peep from Whole Foods.

Great store! Food is great quality and prices aren’t bad at all, especially 365 brand. Having a parking lot in this area is amazing, and it’s free for 90 minutes when you spend at least $10 in store. The only downside is it gets really busy, but it’s still maneuverable.

While on a leisurely walk with my mother during our vacation, we decided to make a detour into this Whole Foods—and I’m glad we did. The entire experience felt like an extension of our peaceful day. The store was spacious, well-ventilated, and blissfully easy to navigate. No chaos, no clutter—just smooth aisles and shelves stocked with exactly what we needed, all at reasonable prices. Special thanks to Ms. Michelle, the supervisor who handled our checkout with such warmth and professionalism that she elevated the whole visit. In fact, give her a raise. She earned it. This wasn’t just a shopping trip—it was a reminder that even errands can be part of a good day when done right.

This is my favorite Whole Foods in the New York area because it has an awesome hot and cold salad bar for $11.99/pound with a great upstairs eating area. A good place to grab a healthy lunch, chill in AC, refill the water bottle and go to the bathroom. It’s not crowded and the staff is nice. 10/10

Google
My favourite section of the store is the salad and fish. Always fresh and many choices. Especially the micro salad. I didn’t find any other store has as many choices as here. The food court is convenient and the food taste can be improved. Overall glad to have one in the neighborhood and love the convenience

Yelp
So happy to have a Whole Foods nearby! I'm always here for my favorite chocolate chip muffins, the organic caesar salad packs (they're always sold out bc they're that good), desserts, hot food station and more. It reminds me of a less hectic Whole Foods you would visit in the city. I say this because there's a lot of foot traffic, but not as much as the city. So, it's bearable. My usual location is West Orange with tons of parking and no time limit. Since this location uses a parking garage, you have 90 minutes of free parking with a $10 or more purchase. Pro tip when you're in the garage, loop around to the other side away from the first couple of spots because it can get really busy with people entering/exiting by foot or in their car. Plus, when it's time for you to leave you don't need to wait for the congestion to die down. To avoid congestion, visit during off peak hours. My sweet spot? On weekdays before 11:30am or between 1:30-3:30pm. Any who, this location is huge! If you're in the garage, you walk through the seated area where you can bring your laptop and/or enjoy your food. Go down the escalator and you're in. The aisles are clean and well stocked. Employees are very helpful and friendly. Since you need to spend $10 to receive free parking (which is easy, ha!), I walked over to self checkout and an employee assisted me right away. You're given a receipt to pop into the machine at the gate when driving out so make sure you grab it! I only wish I could stay longer than 90 minutes so I can grab food and catch up on work. I can also pay to park on the street but I believe there is a time limit as well. Longer than 90 minutes I believe. Oh, and for the hot/cold food station. I need someone to explain to me why I cannot combine hot and cold food on one plate? I still cannot understand this and I ended up having to microwave an entire plate of food upstairs, as suggested by the lady who helped us. We wanted mac & cheese, salmon and green beans and since it wasn't all available hot, we had to receive it cold. I don't know if I am explaining this correctly because I still don't understand, but I will find out next visit!

Yelp
Yikes. This may be the worst Whole Foods experience that I have ever had. I typically go to the Newark location but thought I'd check out this store as I never had been before and I had something from Amazon to return. Upon entering, several escalators weren't working and this is a new store. ? Also, the store, while very bright, looked like it had been entirely picked over. Hardly any produce or what was left was not Whole Foods quality at all. Maybe it was the time period but I typically go to Whole Foods on Sundays as well and have never seen the store in such a state. I tried to return my Amazon product but was told they only have specific hours for that and that it's at a separate desk entirely. OK. The parking was shrunk as compared to the parking lot at Newark which made me nervous that someone would hit my car with their car door. On a positive note, the one staffer that I spoke to in the store was very friendly and helpful. That said, the experience of buying products at the store was far below any other Whole Foods that I've been to and I won't go back. Felt like chaos in there.

Yelp
Just made my conclusion the introduction because this is the biggest deal about this place not to mention many others .. please don't forget about the HUGE FREE parking in the back of the store must go you can use their lot for free. All you have to do is spend at least $10 on groceries. Keep your receipt handy when exiting and give it to the lady at the booth. This Whole Foods market is one of the best Whole Foods I've ever went to super clean super fresh lots of choices and fresh choices at that the buffet has got to be the cleanest buffet I've ever ever been to in a Whole Foods. It's HUGE one-stop shop for almost every need... the customer service is impeccable, clean, clean clean must go. Prices are expensive, like any other Whole Foods...but well worth the trip, and experience. In my opinion, this one is way way wayyyyyy better than the one in Weehawken.

Yelp
Food (4/5): Bought some desserts here and they were quite good. Solid selection of groceries but more expensive than other stores. Service (4/5): Came to return an item from Amazon and it went smoothly with no issues. The staff are reasonably helpful and friendly Ambiance (5/5): Beautiful store interior with multiple floors and a cafe with tons of seating upstairs. Overall a nice atmosphere for shopping.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for Whole Foods, what can I say? Finally a grocery store that's convenient!!! It's always enjoyable to shop here.

Yelp
A wonderful addition to the downtown area. Whole foods brings style and great culinary selections. Your typical whole foods they have all your products that are delicious. The meat section is one of my favorites they have a-lot of in store made sausages from pork to chicken. Fresh fine quality meat butchered for purchase. Prices are a little steep. But the quality is there. The cheese section is nice the staff there is super friendly and always giving. Out free samples. The bakery is nice as well I havent tried anything from there yet but i will. They gave free parking with purchases over $10 take your parking receipt after u pay. It comes out right after your purchase receipt. The salad bar and hot food section is a decent size giving u many options to dine.

Yelp
After a longer wait than the usual time span between Times-endorsed upscale pizza and Whole Foods, the store burst into existence fully formed. There were no obvious organizational problems, but also not a plethora of wild opening day bargains. There was abundance of cheese, a ton of salami-adjacent cured meats and an impressive selection of smoked fish. Without Googling I feel like the frozen food section may have been smaller than average. Per the stereotype, you can spend some money, but on the other hand Hatch green chiles are cheaper here than Westside Market. Bee's Water is $3.99 but how much would you need to spend to travel to a place that sells it? Of course, performative pseudo-environmentalism rears its recyclable head. Whole Foods, like Billy Joel, didn't start the fire of bag bans, but they did choose to charge $2.99 for tote bags. Speaking of local laws, I wondered if the festive display of non-alcoholic IPAs was intended as a clever commentary on our absence of supermarket booze. As someone who enjoyed hearing "Better Man" at a Michigan Meijer's in the 90s, I appreciate when supermarkets play good music, and this store passes the Shazam test. Searching for Fuji apples is more festive when accompanied by The Farm's "Groovy Train." (There's a New York Times Pitchbot joke in here somewhere). Overall, I'm glad 360 frozen burritos are available within a decent perishability radius,

Yelp
Dont order online grocery through whole foods!! Whole foods has one of the freshest groceries in store. But there online delivery through amazon is one of the worst in the market. They send just leftovers of their grocery which are rotting. There online ordering app is also not very mobile friendly. Its a waste of money and time to order online grocery from online.

Yelp
My favorite Whole Foods in New Jersey. So close to the city. Great options to choose from. Amazing service. Quality ambiance.

Yelp
Ever since the opening of Whole Foods in Jersey City a few months ago, my shopping experience has been nothing short of extraordinary. This expansive store offers everything one could possibly need, making it a go-to destination for all my grocery needs and more. From fresh produce to pantry staples, organic options, and specialty items, Whole Foods has it all. One of the highlights of shopping at Whole Foods Jersey City is the hot entree section, where fresh, delicious food is served daily. Whether I'm craving a hearty meal or just looking for a quick bite, the hot entree section never disappoints. The quality of the food is exceptional, and I find myself coming back week after week to indulge in my favorite dishes. The service at Whole Foods is also worth mentioning, as the staff members are always friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to assist customers with any questions or concerns. Additionally, the convenience of having Amazon Returns available at the store is a huge bonus, making it easy to handle any returns or exchanges while doing my grocery shopping.

Yelp
So nice to have a Whole Foods nearby. There's a parking garage where you can park and get your ticket validated with your purchase. Reminds me of the Trader Joe's in Hoboken. This WFs is huge. Well stocked and workers were friendly. Picked up some scones and they were fresh and delicious. Also happy to see they sell coterie diapers. Was looking for goat milk baby formula but they only had the toddler version. Meat& seafood looked fresh. Would definitely return to try the fresh food selection.

Yelp
So excited to have a Whole Foods in jersey city! Overall good experience and probably the most important factor, there's a parking garage! Free parking for 90min, with a $10 minimum receipt. It was really clean and organized, maybe a little smaller than other Whole Foods I've gone to. Didn't eat at the prepared food section but I walked through, and everything looked good. Took off a star because I went to grab some English muffins from the bakery and they were moldy. I know things like that can slip through the cracks, but it definitely turned me off from getting any bakery items that trip.

Yelp
Welcome to JC, my friend. This store has been a long time coming, so much so that we moved apartments since we first heard this was in the works. But, luckily, we're just a short drive away in JC rather than a medium walk away. With this being the case, and as expected, parking for 90 minutes is free with a $10 purchase. The store itself takes over 3 different floors, with the bottom (main) floor serving as the main grocery area. One floor up is a ton of eating space, and one more is basically just where you go in to park. There is actually less total space than I had imagined there being given the presumed size of the building, but it's used very well. Despite coming at 5:30pm on a weekday we didn't feel overwhelmed by the post-work crowds. As expected, the meat, produce, deli, and hot bar sections were super robust. We found everything we were looking for, and even took hot bar home for dinner. Another plus -- the volume of registers. Two types of self checkout and one area of regular checkout nearly guarantees a minimal line. My only meh experience was at the deli. Clearly some new folks here, including some that may or may not have seen a slicer until today. Getting 1lb of turkey took more than 10 minutes -- and I only ended up with .75. Oh well. No big deal. This Whole Foods is a welcome addition to downtown JC in an area that was severely lacking this type of grocery store. I'm incredibly happy to not have to drive to Weehawken anymore. Close on the map, but far in practice, especially after work.

Yelp
Love the free-ish (you have to spend at least $10 which at Whole Foods is a piece of cake) 90 minute parking. The dining area is HUGE. It's almost like a cafeteria setting. LOTS of choices. The layout of the store is kind of scattered and condensed which poses a crowding issue but I don't mind it. I'm a city girl. I love this addition to Jersey City.

Yelp
So its finally here! Whole Foods is in JC and i have to say its a lovely, clean and bright supermarket! Although the store has two levels all of grocery and hot foods is downstairs while theres tons of seating upstairs and restrooms. Staff was very friendly and seemed to enjoy their new home! If u know Whole Foods prices no need to go into detail as this is not a budget friendly store BUT the meat and seafood is fresh and u get what u pay for! Downside is the parking situation. They will validate if u spend $10 for 90 minutes. I feel bad for the employees who have to actually pay to park or try their luck on the street parking which is impossible in that area. Overall a nice experience not sure how ofter i myself will be there but the store was busy and bustling.

Randy C.

Yelp
I love Whole foods, but this location is terrible. It's fairly new, but the people working there especially in the meat department are rude. They don't wear gloves which are stacked behind the counter. They don't pay attention and make mistakes. Avoid at all costs. The meat team manager I talked was super rude. I definitely will not go back.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Amazing selection, really well organized cheese shelves, fresh seafood selection. Checkout counters didn't have as many registers as other whole foods. Amazing coffee bar and extensive hot food selection. Busy environment, but happy to have this much needed addition to Jersey City.

Yelp
A luxury supermarket to match the luxury apartments around Jersey City! I can't wait to drop my leftover money barely affording rent to pay Amazon! Maybe I'll finally get some use out of my Amazon credit card cash back at whole foods I couldn't be bothered to stand in line to be the first to get the random goodies, I have a job! Who are these WFH slackers and grandmas coming in on a Thursday morning anyways. Huge selection of high end meats, organic veggies and "responsibly sourced items." I really don't care if the food was picked by child labor, but I really appreciate it that they tell us it wasn't. Those massive tomahawk steaks are insane. Only other market that has this level of quality is ShopRite. Just kidding, only Eataly got anything on this. They had a bunch of free samples like juice, pasta, self serve cheese, etc. and there's security at the entrance to prevent poor people from entering to eat the free samples.
google avatar

Dhilip R.

Yelp
Crazy opening but it was well organized and a fast moving file of people. This is going to be the biggest grocery store in Jersey city and is very spacious. The customer service was really good for the strength of the people that showed. Will it live to its name? We are going to wait and see. There's an upper level for the cafe and corner solely dedicated for Returns! Smart move to keep it upstairs.
google avatar

Eddie S.

Yelp
Just an FYI: parking is complimentary for the first 90 minutes with a $10 minimum spend. If you're here to return something from Amazon they will not validate your ticket. Very strange policy since Whole Foods is owned by Amazon.

Bernadette B.

Yelp
Was so excited for Whole Foods to open. I'm here sitting in the food eating area and I must say that i don't think I'll be frequenting here anymore. Some things to focus on to improve: Cons: 1) have your chefs taste your brussel sprouts before they serve it in the hot bar. I bought it today and it's sour as f*** ... when did ya'll cook this? Last month? 2) when customers ask for help: I know workers are assigned to certain areas, but would ya'll train them that if they are not assigned in that area that they'll find someone who can and won't stop til you get an answer? Customer service: negative 1*** 3) this is a new store and your entrance door up on P2 is nonfunctional since it opened. Come on. 4) chairs are not clean. This is just disgusting. Please see photo. Pros: 1) 90 min parking free 2) water areas

Yelp
Typical ignorant reviews from haters The store has been in the works since 2009- It's been a long process The store itself is beautifully laid out- Such a great selection of products The produce was incredible Prices were on par with other stores in area Staff was friendly and the free parking is a great perk This store caters to all- The lines around the store proved how dedicated the locals are to shopping here All races all ages all sexual orientations were there so-ignore the negative haters Always going to be some Once a Walmart shopper always a Walmart shopper for some There is nothing more ridiculous than an uneducated ignorant yelper

Judy B.

Yelp
The security guard at Whole Foods is super rude. Was getting ready to shop on Monday about 6pm and stopped from entering with kid on child scooter. Angry security guard accused me of not listening and just gestured towards us. Finally, he said "no scooter". How could that be since I've been there with kid on child scooter before AND I have seen other kids on scooters in the store only a few days ago! Overall bad experience, since the security guard - security guard does not use full sentences to explain sorry you cannot bring kid scooter in the store (kid is not riding it either, just walking it), security angry is angry and quite threatening, did not explain well what we needed to do (had to interpret it after some time), and policy is not consistent. Please move him away from the store, he should not be out front/dealing with people! Bad experience there and my kid was pretty upset by the whole experience.

Alice X.

Yelp
Hands down the worst stocked Whole Foods I've set foot in. Everything always looks picked over, esp in the fruit & veggie aisles. There are large swaths of shelves just completely empty all the time. Usually when I step foot into one of these stores, there's like a nice & shiny feeling, but when I come to this one, it looks like people ravaged it after a zombie attack or something. Clearly when they planned out this store, they way underestimated the demand in the area. The upstairs eating area is usually super empty too. Why not just expand the produce section on the first floor, and move another section up to the second floor?
google avatar

Steven T.

Yelp
By far, this store visit was the worst Whole Foods experience I had among visits of East and West Coast stores. The parking entrance and/or exit is abysmal to say the very least. That parking attendant lady barely speaks English and misled customers to use the monthly parking lane. The meat section staff put a wrong label on the produce until I found out and point that mistake to the cashier. I am sure that's not intentional. On the way back to have the produce relabeled, some staff took away my cart at the cash register along with my parking ticket, which is a genius move by the way. Lastly, it took minutes to help the cashier correct the inflated price. I would lie to you if I would go again!

Yelp
Don't let the guy at the bakery do your writing . This is horrible . I was wondering why they put it in a box without a clear front

Yelp
This place is near work so a nice option for lunch. Clean, nicely laid out so spacious even with a good amount of people inside. Their salad and hot food sections have a lot of options. I tried a variety of things like tortellini, grilled chicken and barley salad. This place just opened so not surprisingly fresh; the quality of food is good. There are also a ton is soup options which will be quite desirable as we continue to get colder. Self check out speeds things up in a couple of areas go store. Overall nice place to pick up good food with many options to choose from.

Yelp
It's nice to finally have a Whole Foods in JC. Overall, selections are decent and prices as expected. Deducting one star for allowing pets in the store. I counted 2 dogs on the checkout line alone.
