Yelp
Does anyone even shop for groceries at Whole Foods anymore? And what I mean by this somewhat rhetorical question is that, between places like Trader Joe's, Aldi's, and even Wegman's, there are plenty of other stores to purchase organic, Fair Trade, Vegan, Gluten Free, locally sourced, items...and at the same price or usually CHEAPER!
I give Whole (PayCheck) Foods credit for practically inventing this segment of the grocery industry, but it seems that in the past several years, they are suffering an identity crisis. Namely, is Whole Foods still the preeminent purveyor of organic heath, beauty, and food stuffs?
OR
Has Whole Foods become nothing more than an upscale food court?
IMHO, Whole Paycheck has devolved to the latter of these two choices. Not that I shop at WF very often, but the last couple of stores I've visited across the DMV, it seems that they are devoting more and more space to the hot and cold food bar stations, pizza/sandwich counters, as well as (what I call) "mini-bar" areas where customers can sit and order beer/wine and food items.
Honestly, I think it is a smart pivot since Whole Paycheck understands what meal delivery services like Blue Apron and food delivery services like GrubHub already know - people today don't cook and paradoxically with all of the modern conveniences, have "less time".
This particular Whole Foods is near the GW campus and is nice enough, but I primarily stop in before I attend a show at the Kennedy Center or am just walking around Foggy Bottom and want a quick bite. I find their bakery to be above average with a special shout out to their fresh muffins in the morning. And surprisingly, I find their sushi (in partnership with local high-end purveyor Kaz Sushi Bistro) to be quite good during the lunch and dinner hour when it is prepared fresh.
Otherwise, there is nothing special about this location. Usually there are students and busy professionals milling about the aisles, debating whether to spend the extra $2 for the organic avocados or if paraben free deodorant works any better for the premium price.
Ironically, I thought when Amazon purchased WF that prices would drop, but they have largely remained static. Long term, I only see Whole Foods continuing to shift their strategy to be more of a "luxury convenience grocery marketer" - complete with personal concierge shoppers which will curate your suggested purchases based upon profile preferences integrated with your Amazon account.
If this happens, I hope Amazon is considerate enough to acknowledge my Intellectual Property claim, along with any future royalties in perpetuity...
