The 15 Best Breweries In Boston 2024 - Boston - The Infatuation

"Widowmaker used to be one of the only craft breweries between Boston and the South Shore. And in the past decade or so, several exciting breweries, like Vitamin Sea in Weymouth and Untold Brewing in Cohasset, have since popped up. Widowmaker now has a location in Brighton, though, where it serves some really excellent noodle bowls and bar snacks by Bone and Bread. Its tap list covers a spectrum of styles, from the hoppiest and haziest IPA to the crispiest lager, with some fruity sours peppered in for good measure. The flagship beer is the Blue Comet, an award-winning hazy IPA that’s well-balanced, thanks to a blend of comet and simcoe hops. The interior of the mid-sized taproom is dark and moody, which seamlessly matches the branding of the brewery." - valerie li stack

This taproom brewery completely surprised me in the best way. The moment I walked in, the space pulled me right into its charm—the decor has a striking gothic vibe that feels both artistic and inviting, with plenty of room to relax, sip, and savor. It’s spacious, attractive, and has that perfect balance of edge and comfort. The food… oh my goodness. The Indian-fusion tapas are on another level—vibrant, flavorful, and crafted in a way that makes each bite feel special. Every dish was easy to share, fun to explore, and full of those rich, layered spices that warm you from the inside out. I left feeling like my soul had been fed. Their beer selection is equally impressive: unique, diverse, and clearly curated with intention. Whether you love something bold, crisp, hoppy, or experimental, you’ll find something to fall in love with. And I have to mention the bar team—friendly, welcoming, and genuinely happy to guide you through the menu. Their energy added so much to the experience. I highly recommend this place. Come for the beer, stay for the food, and leave with a happy heart. Cheers!

Erik was an amazing staff member who helped with everything we needed, and this was some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was also super fun, prices were great, and we had no trouble being helped even though it was a busy night before a show at a nearby venue. The food was outstanding: we ordered the lamb, butter chicken, mushroom saag, naan, and a fried chicken sandwich, and everything was excellent. The drinks were all fantastic too, whether it was a house made chai, or local IPA. I wish I remembered to take photos of the food, but we did get a fun group shot. Definitely check this place out!

Great menu! The saag and korma were fire. The sauce that comes with the tots is also incredible. Beer selection leans towards IPAs. Personally loved the Czech dark lager.

Four girls out to dinner before a show at Roadrunner. Atmosphere was laid back, fun, and host Eric was helpful and hospitable, food was delicious and so were our drinks. We will be back!!! Try the mushroom saag, chicken sandwich, butter chicken, and lamb kabobs! Delish!

I stopped by last night for the grand opening of Aatma, and I am SO impressed! I have always been a fan of Widowmaker for their beers & atmosphere, and now I get to pair that with great food, too. My group tried a variety of things- the chaat, Bhaji, butter chicken, the aatma burger, the 69 chicken sandwich & the naan. Can’t pick a favorite because it was all that good. In addition to the food/drinks, I loved the crew and their excitement for the new menu. Shoutout to Keith! And I wish I caught the name of the guy who sold us on the chaat- he was great too and very knowledgeable. I will be back, obviously. You should go, too!

Google
It was a quiet Sunday morning. Pleasant beer bro atmosphere, with friendly staff, most with impressive beards. Beer selection was awesome—my beer-drinking kid loved his lager. (I appreciated that there was a can of n/a beer available, but opted for water.) food was tasty—although we ended up only with stuff from the fryer. My kid preferred my chickpea burger to his chicken sandwich, which is high praise from that carnivore… potatoes and fried mushrooms were great. We’ll be back…

Google
I live close by, but just finally visited this week when a pro-housing community organization held its holiday party there. What a great place! I loved the beer (their offering included a couple of dark lagers that were wonderful and unusual for this area). And Atama, the in-house food purveyor, provided a delicious assortment of small plates. My spouse and I both want to go back and hang out in the nice comfy chairs on a quiet winter evening.

Google
Ryan was hilarious and gave great recommendations. Best IPAs in Boston, if you'll believe it. Worth getting out of the city

Yelp
*DOG FRIENDLY* Dogs are allowed both inside and outside which you never really see. They have rotating food trucks, today they had Bone and Bread. The fries are absolutely delicious - I think they're beer bartered and the sauce (I think it's some sort of spicy mayo) really good The Korean corn dog and smash burger are okay, nothing special. We got the Oreo blueberry and it honestly does taste like Oreos, no blueberry taste though. And the Splatterhaus which is a fruity sour

Yelp
Definitely the best of the breweries in boston. Their NEIPAs are much better than the other 2 big breweries in the city. Food was surprisingly excellent. Keep up the great work. Parking on the street to the side.

Yelp
Widowmaker Brewing is a craft brewery that opened in Braintree, Massachusetts in September 2017. It was founded by business partners Ryan Lavery, Colin Foley and Bud Lazaro. Lavery and Foley met while playing in a men's hockey league. Lavery worked in pharmaceutical sales while Foley worked in finance. They soon learned that they shared a passion for homebrewing. They practiced their hobby in Lavery's basement and brewed everything from pale ales to stouts and porters. The partners soon became burned out in their office jobs and decided to quit and open a brewery. They decided to call their new venture "Widowmaker" as a reference to their former jobs: work that takes someone away from the people that they love. Lazaro came on board as an additional partner. After opening, the brewery's popularity grew very quickly; they went from a 7 barrel brewhouse to a 15 barrel brewhouse. In 2021, they opened a summer beer garden at Kilroy Square Farmers Market in Quincy Center. Lazaro later left the company and sold his interests to new partner Kenny Semcken. The current head brewer is Brady Heefner. A secondary taproom and full-service kitchen opened in Brighton in October 2023. I recently visited the Widowmaker Taproom & Kitchen while I was cycling in Boston. I had previously visited their original Braintree location last year and was very impressed with their beer. I really liked the interior motif which was a little spooky. The brewery owners were in the middle of constructing a new outdoor patio area which has been completed since my visit. Although Widowmaker doesn't offer traditional taster flights, they do offer short pours. I ended up sampling "Doom Drips" (Pilsner; collaboration with Foam Brewers), "Tequila Leaf" (Fruited Sour), "Karnon Spirit" (Double New England IPA), and "Trouble On Mount Doom" (Double New England IPA). As in the past with Widowmaker, every single beer that I sampled was fantastic! I was really excited to try food from their in-house kitchen which is known as 'Bone & Bread'. I ordered the "Chickpea Burger" (falafel-style patty on grilled naan w/ arugula, cucumber, cilantro, red onion and spiced yogurt sauce) and "Crispy Potato Wedges w/ Sea Salt". The food was absolutely delicious! I'm so happy that I was able to visit Widowmaker's Brighton Taproom and I look forward to returning!

Yelp
Came here with two friends. Did not know what to expect but heard this place was good. Yes the beer was good and the space is chill but, it was very loud. And we all agreed on that. Their food menu is smallish and not your average beer taproom choices. It's interesting to see actually. I was looking for a pretzel but they only have pretzel buns for their sandwiches. Staff were nice.

Yelp
We had a private event at Widowmaker Taproom and Kitchen recently and I was very impressed with the open space, nice decor and very friendly staff. It is a great space for those companies looking to get the staff together for some drinks and apps! This review is going to be about the food because I am currently not drinking and a handful of employees were doing dry January. I will say they offered a Non Alcoholic Craft Brew that was Fantastic and I highly recommend if that is what your looking for. I literally can't say enough about the appetizers they put out. ALL of them were fantastic! The Beef Tenderloin on a skewer with a horseradish dipping sauce was my favorite as it was nice and tender and the sauce (if you want to put it on) had a nice fresh zing to it! The shrimp were cooked perfectly and weren't rubber, but they way they were seasoned just kept me coming back for more and more. There was a nice avocado crema to go with them if you wanted. Both the Burger Sliders and Fried Chicken Sliders were a little more substantive if you needed a base while trying their extensive menu of brews. They also had a Mushroom and Veggie Ravioli with a soy ginger sauce, a brucetta with a bacon jam and Caprese on a skewer as well. All great! I looked at their normal menu and I will be going back because they have some Ramen bowls I must try. Check this place out.

Yelp
Have always enjoyed their variety of beer since they opened in Braintree and since just over a month ago, Widowmaker has a new taproom in Brighton, occupying the space where the former Brato Brewhouse was, not too far from the new Allston Yards, near the New Balance and Warrior's Arena where the Bruins and Celtics practice. Coming in and you're greeted to more a gothic style type of decor and ambiance, adorned with animal skulls and candles and various artwork dominated with skulls. Seating areas are plentiful with the bar, booths, high tops, and lounge chairs. Would have liked the area to be larger but the building wasn't that big to begin with. You can opt for half or full pours, which is nice to give the option for anyone who just wants to try a beer out to see if they like or it not and potentially seek out a full pour. Got the triple-dry hopped Brainier Space DIPA and it was super smooth, juicy, and dangerously quaffable! Their flagship IPA, Blue Comet, is spot on and don't forget any of their lagers, such as the Kameosa Rice Lager, which has puffed rice, sake yeast, yuzu orange peel, sakura cherry blossoms, and ginger, and is something to try (half pour if not a full). Staff were very nice and friendly and nice to talk to. Parking is street, 2 hours max, unless you chance it somewhere nearby.

Yelp
Cool brewery and kitchen! Lots of great IPAs and some dark and sours. Chicken sandwich and potato wedges are bomb. Plenty of seating and parking was easy on the street.

Yelp
Sunday evening There was almost no one there this evening - probably because it was Sunday but also place is still pretty new so I am sure that will change as more folks learn about this place. I didn't mind since just wanted to hang with folks and drink. Appreciate the half pour options. Drank half pours of ALL their hazy IPAs on tap. Tasted their sour on tap: it was too weird for me haha (peanut butter and jelly) - but it was fun to try. Staff were friendly. Didn't try the food. I would totally return and try some of the grub next time.

Yelp
Been to both Widowmaker taprooms. Both were great with many beers to choose from. The Blue Commit is probably the best hazy I have ever found & I hit lots of breweries across the US

Ryan L.

Yelp
The beer is 10/10 (tree house/trillium level, if you know you know), and the staff is super kind and helpful as you try to figure out what you want. I came in once just to buy cans to go, and they graciously offered to try a sip off draft of the beers I was considering. Don't sleep on this spot!

Yelp
I'm glad this brewery found a second home in Brighton! Lots of space for groups to sit and gather, and their beer is reliably good. Glad to have a local brewery in the area!
