Where to Eat Calamari in Monterey County | Eater

"Wild Fish builds its menu around the seafood caught by local fishermen and produce harvested by nearby farms, so it’s constantly changing to fit the ingredients of the season. On a typical night, though, you might find fresh salads like one with ricotta, compressed apples, fennel and hazelnuts; whole roasted fish with chimichurri and crispy potatoes; and, of course, plenty of calamari, either served with blistered shishito peppers and Calabrian chili oil or given the Nashville hot treatment in a sandwich with slaw and pickles. Stop by on Friday and Saturday nights to catch a performance by the house jazz band." - Annalise Mantz

Wild Fish is my favorite restaurant in the area! And shout out to our server, Ravi! He made the night feel so special for us. Every time I visit, I always make sure to have a meal here. The servers and staff are very welcoming, and the food will make you feel like you’ve made it to heaven! Definitely stop by if you are in the area.

Amazing all gluten free menu. Exceptional Calamari and Popovers. The fish and chips was excellent too. Service was prompt and friendly. Can not recommend enough.

Food was adequate and lacked flavor. Went for lunch and ordered the popovers, chowder and whole fish. Popovers were okay. The chowder was too salty and not much flavor. The whole fish was cooked well and tender, however the chimichurri sauce lacked flavor. And food was pricey.

This place is a gem — the kind of restaurant that doesn’t shout but quietly wins you over with every detail. The seafood is the star here, and rightfully so. Sourced fresh from the Monterey Bay, each dish tastes like it was pulled from the ocean that morning. Whether it’s oysters, grilled fish, or ceviche, everything arrives perfectly cooked and cleanly plated — no fuss, just serious respect for great ingredients. As if that weren’t enough, the ambiance is genuinely lovely. Soft jazz drifts through the space like a sea breeze, setting a relaxed, elegant tone without veering into stuffy. It’s the kind of place where you lean back with a glass of wine and suddenly realize you’ve been smiling the whole time. Don’t skip the happy hour — it’s one of the best on the coast. Thoughtfully priced, generous portions, and no corners cut. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve somehow gotten away with something. The service is top notch too. A perfect spot for date night, solo indulgence, or just a refined break from the ordinary. Highly recommend.

Food: Fresh, tasty. Service: perfection Atmosphere: intimate, friendly, neat Cleanliness: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our family (grandparents, parents, two year old) enjoyed Sunday afternoon brunch in a quiet upbeat setting. We had mimosas with fresh squeezed orange juice, the freshest calamari with a lovely spicy dip, amazing melt-in-your-mouth bread & butter, smoked fish soup, fish tacos, cod burgers, fries to knock your socks off and champagne. It was a wonderful experience.

I have never had a dinner service be so disastrous. Whether through inexperience, incompetence, or poor management, we were not served our meals. The entire service did not go well from start to finish. Upon arriving for our 5:30 reservation, we were told the online reservation system was not working. No problem, as there are still plenty of tables and we are seated right away. We’re told that the chef is new, so certain items may not be available. You would think a new chef would be fully trained before staffing solo? But no problem, we’ll try a different dish if need be. We put in an order for popovers and beers, but are told that they are out of that beer tonight. No problem, just water then. The popovers arrive and we are missing one. It seems that it has fallen off the plate before they brought it to our table. No problem, they replace it for us. The popover was not memorable, quite soggy and oily. They also did not give us any plates for sharing. 40 minutes into being seated, our meal order is finally taken. As we are waiting for our food, it becomes clear that the restaurant is severely understaffed, with only one waiter and one helper serving the entire restaurant. No one at the tables around us have any food on their tables. The tables seated outside come back in to see if they’ve been forgotten. A table of 4 in the corner leave after being served only waters. We’re not sure where our waiter has gone off to. At this point, they really need to stop seating people. An hour and a half after being seated, we flag the waiter to check the status of our food, giving them the benefit of the doubt. After some time, the waiter returns to let us know that the kitchen has lost our ticket, and our meals were never made. He offers to comp our appetizers. At this point, we’re realizing they won’t be making our food? And we must leave hungry having already waited for close to 2 hours. I suppose we should have spoken up earlier but we were giving them the benefit of the doubt. So we leave, and grab pizzas down the street instead. Keep in mind, we arrived at 5:30pm (the restaurant opens at 5) and left at 7:30pm. The tables that were seated after us still did not receive their entrees. Quite a disappointment.

Google
Definitely make a reservation,...as they are very popular and it's no wonder! This was my first visit and will not be my first. Parking is street parking, so depending on local events could be a bit challenging. About the Wild Fish Restaurant...from the moment I arrived to when I departed, everyone from the owner to the staff were nothing short of spectacular! They met everyone with a smile, answered every question and were attentive to all their customers. I had their swordfish, it was approx. 1/2" thick and was tender and moist, it came with potatoes and greens...all cooked perfectly. You must try the coconut and rum cocktail...amazing and their butterscotch desert was perfect as well. Give them a visit, you won't be disappointed!

We were taking a stroll along Ocean View Blvd and dinner time was fast approaching. I had identified Wild Fish previously as a possible restaurant. It was not too far to walk to Lighthouse Avenue, we decided to check them out. After looking at their menu, we decided fish is probably a healthy option given our location. We were seated by the window, unfortunately, the door had to be left open when meant that we had to keep our down jackets on. We were going to share a few appetizers with the Whole Fish entree. Unfortunately, they ran out of the small Whole Fish. We were a large Rock Cod that was over two lbs, for $75. Well, that meant we wouldn't have room for the other appetizers we had identified. Bah! I ordered the non-alcoholic Navarro Vineyard Pinot Noir juice. Being spoiled by the delicious sour dough focaccia we could get from Pastaggio at home, we were disappointed by the House-Made Rosemary Focaccia. The fish was very filling. My partner enjoyed it, I thought it was overcooked as that's the typical problem with Rock Cod. We enjoyed the crispy potatoes, and the miniscule green salad, and of course, we couldn't finish the fish. We rewarded ourselves with sticky toffee pudding for putting in a good effort though. Knowing that Rock Cod tends to be overcooked, next time we visit, we would definitely try other dishes.

Yelp
That was super! Coming in for lunch here on a Saturday is must-- especially if you love Fish & Chips! The service was friendly, attentive, and easy going. This is a solid local restaraunt that serves its neighbors and tourists very well. The ambience is cozy and laid back. Even though the options sound familiar and not too fancy, the plating and flavors of their food are really good here. Again, I stepped in for lunch on the weekend and there was plenty of seating which made service quick, easy, and a super satisfying meal. Winning!

Yelp
We really wanted to love this spot, but didn't. On the menu the dishes are described nicely and sound promising....till! I started with the Oysters with pomegranate and tarragon oil mignonette. Sounded good, till I saw the oysters were drowning in this mignonette, Tasted horrible and totally hid the flavor of oyster, which were shucked poorly. Wife had Sablefish with rainbow carrots, good she said but had better in past. I got Sesame Ahi with Miso glaze and shredded cabbage. Tuna was great however the Miso was so salty I avoided it with each bite. Shredded Cabbage slaw was dry and added little to flavor of fish. Service was Ok, surprised waitress ( one of owners) never asked if we enjoyed food and never questioned why I only eat two of my oysters we both left a lot of food on plate.

Yelp
Recently went to Wild Fish after seeing it on PBS's program Check Please. My friends and I ordered the whole rock fish, fried calamari, and ahi tuna. Everthing was just ok. Not bad but not great. I was expecting great so I left disapointed. The only thing great was our server! Maybe it was an off night for the food?

Yelp
I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the service was very nice. He was very knowledgeable about the menu. The food was good, we all left very satisfied

Yelp
The guy with a British accent who wouldn't give me his name was so rude, I would never eat here even if you paid me. I booked this restaurant in error. He wouldn't give me the chance to explain the error, called me a liar, hung up on me then proceeded to charge me $100 late fee without giving me the chance to explain why and the situation. I guess they need the money more than I do. With this type of hospitality, I wouldn't be surprised if this restaurant closes soon. AVOID!

Yelp
Just had takeout: Baja style fish tacos and they were delicious and fresh Quick and efficient service with easy payment thru toast app

Yelp
I recently went to the wild fish for dinner. I had a reservation for two. We definitely enjoyed it. We would definitely return. It was a nice environment is very quiet. Service was excellent. We started off with the oysters, which were delicious after that I believe I got the whole fish fried to perfection. We also had the Halibu, spicy greens, a popover. The wine was a Bernardus Chardonnay. We tried the Bouillabaisse and crispy potatoes. The drinks Mojito and service were really top notch! I would recommend the Wild Fish if you like fresh seafood, and being close to the ocean!

Yelp
We have been dining at Wild Fish pretty much since they opened, and our experience has always been good. Several weeks ago, we brought friends there for a dinner on a Sunday night. First, we noticed it was very warm in the restaurant, uncomfortably warm. After we ordered, later we were advised they were out of the item two of us had ordered. When our food came out, my dish (filet of sole) was dry and tasteless. The others were similarly not impressed with their dishes. The worst part was this: We ordered Focaccia bread, which was hard and stale. We have ordered this before at this restaurant and it was always warm and fresh. My wife and I were embarrassed bringing our friends there. We noticed the owners were not there this time, and that may explain the terrible experience we had that night.

Yelp
The food was amazing with an almost completely gluten free menu--we were there at a slow time so the service was very attentive--the space is subdued and moody--perfect for a date night!

Yelp
I'm so sad to have to lower my review. We went to Wild Fish this past weekend and I wish we had chosen another restaurant to take our kids. We went before and had the absolute best experience, and because we were on a weekend trip, we wanted to visit it again. This place is pricey. PRICEY. It's pretty sad when you spend a few hundred dollars at a restaurant and you're still hungry afterward A few things: 1: The food was disappointing. Appetizers and mains were bland, and the food arrived warm, not hot. 2. I'm not sure if they changed cooks, because the bouillabaisse was so much different than last time we had it. This time it resembled more of a cioppino. It was very tomato-heavy, lots of onions, very little seafood. 3. The menu didn't have a wow-factor and I felt like there were more options last time. 4. We were served by one of the owner's. She was very pleasant. The restaurant wasn't very busy, but at one point my husband had to get up and ask for Tabasco, because he didn't want his food to get colder than it already was, and wait for her to come back to the table. My kids didn't understand all the hype. Understandably so. If this was a bad day, that's too bad. Unfortunately, we won't be back.

Yelp
Good restaurant serving fresh fish and seafood. I tried the fish and chips. The batter is crispy and delicious. It comes with some wedge potato fries, also good. I had a taste of the fish tacos also flavorful. Everything was delicious. I just think that they need to add something to the fish and chips instead of the pickled cabbage and onions. The fish tacos could also use a side of beans or something else. Overall,a good choice for a seafood restaurant. I like that you can pay through the QR code on a smartphone. They have some good non alcoholic drinks. Coconut lime is very good especially on a sunny day. Plenty of outdoor seating in the front.

Vince L.

Yelp
Over priced and over rated. Service was average. Ambiance was nice , but you had to sit in the bar section to get the happy hour special s.lm a local and have dined at every seafood restaurant around t own .This place has along way to go.

Yelp
Sweet little restaurant! Great food and good service. Brussels sprouts were amazing. The place was packed but servers did a great job making sure everyone was taken care of.

Yelp
The food is always delicious at Wild Fish. Fresh daily fish, calamari is the best around and the potatoes- OMG. Service is lovely and Ambiance is perfect for a fairly quiet dinner with friends or a date night.

Yelp
I've always liked the wild fish though it is quite expensive. The menu is innovative, but sometimes I just want something simple. Case in point: their aïoli has quite a kick to it and lots of jalapeño peppers. I'd love to see a homemade tartar sauce next time. The fish tacos, too, as opposed to the usual three were fried lightly, but served with a very spicy aïoli Again, I like my tartar sauce. I think it's a bit of an overkill with the jalapeño. Something that was a little distressing, was our waiter . While the service was OK, his insistence on standing next to our table while we are engrossed in conversation was distracting and interrupted the flow of the conversation. He did it again and I was a bit curt with him. I think service staff should be able to 'read the table' and never interrupt especially to ask if everything is all right need to anticipate the guests. I posted this on social media wondering if maybe I was just too harsh with the server, however, the responses I received agreed with me. Do not interrupt your customers conversation.

Yelp
Came here a few days ago. Food was ok, but definitely nothing to write home about. The prices are very expensive. I always compare my seafood to Monterey Fish House, and this place cannot compare to the delicious and i expensive food of that place. Won't be back.

Yelp
Quality food in a cozy/casual setting with friendly service. Smoked Sablefish(Fermented shimeji mushrooms, mostarda, ponzu) - smoky and savory, an unique and delicious appetizer. Steamers(Salt Spring Island mussels, white wine, garlic, butter, tomatoes, aromatics, grilled sourdough bread) - the mussels were fresh and sweet. The sauce was perfect for bread dipping. Whole Fish(roasted Chilipepper Rock Cod, chimichurri, green salad, lemon vinaigrette, crispy potatoes, garlic aioli) - the fish was prepped well and I could tasted the freshness. The crispy potatoes were decadently yummy! Bouillabaisse (White fish, clams, mussels, shrimp, saffron rouille, grilled sourdough) - this was the more disappointing dish of the night. Although the seafood was decent, the broth tasted a bit simple. Lemon Tart - standard tasting. Overall, a pleasant and relaxing dining experience with good food.

Corvus S.

Yelp
The food was horrible. First, everything was over salted to the point of almost being inedible. My plate, the Petrale sole, was literally rubbery. The puree of whatever was cloyingly sweet. The beans mediocre, cold and overly salted. Lemonade is on the menu, there was none. They're trying to be something they are not, with a supposedly "elegant" small portion presentation for exorbitant money. Go to The Fish Market in Monterey or Passion Fish in Pacific Grove and have a WAY better meal for same or less money. The appetizers, like the baked potatoes were unceremoniously dumped in a bowl ... the Focaccia was terrible ... stale. You get two popovers ... they were cold and almost stale, not moist and tasty. The baked whole carrots were small, cold, over salted and hard - tiny portions for big money. The garden salad was drenched in too much salty "buttermilk" dressing that tasted like Tahini with a clump of stale parmesan dumped on it. The bouillabaisse was less than meager with practically no seafood in it and, again way too salty. The Ahi Tuna -- yuch ... my partner didn't even finish it ... One good thing ... the fried calamari rings were just ok, yet, still oversalted ... the sauces bland and uninteresting ... we put ketchup on everything. Don't trust the menu either ... the Strawberry Rhubarb desert really has peaches in it -- the menu says apple (?) The waiter has no idea. The service is good though. No excuses. Don't go to Wild Fish.

Yelp
Great meal! Fish tacos, sable fish collars and popovers !!! Loved the wine selection and the staff! Service with the heart!

Yelp
TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT. Would give it a no star if I could. Made a special trip from San Francisco to try this place and made reservation online and even received confirmation. But when we arrived the place was dark in spite of our reservation and hours posted on the website. Called but no answer. Fortunately we ran into the landlord & he asked someone from the kitchen to come out. Person said they were closed for the day. No posting on the door & nothing on their website to state that they would be closed, so why take reservations? We even received a follow up to confirm reservation the day before. Several other people came by looking to dine there and also left unhappy. So be warned, they apparently care little for their customers.

Yelp
So delicious!! And now in OG!!! First dined with them in Mendocino Cty. So wonderful, we ate there both nights!!! Hope to return soon.

Yelp
Kelvin, the long-time owner, and his staff always make us feel welcome! We enjoyed the steamer clams appetizer, the halibut and sablefish entrees, and the strawberry rhubard crisp for dessert...everything was prepared to perfection and we can't wait to return!

Yelp
We go to PG nearly every year for our holiday, and 3 years ago we happened on this place while looking for seafood, but every time we're back we find ourselves coming again and again, and this time was so good it reminded to write a review! For starters it's an idyllic location, close to the sea, cozy jazz-inspired decor inside, awesome atmosphere. The food is honestly some of the best seafood I've had this side of the Pacific. I had the sablefish this time, which is everything it should be; delicate, buttery and melt in your mouth. Incredibly fresh. Awesome selection of Cali wines to pair with each dish. It's a foodie's heaven. Dessert is no joke either, they like to experiment with flavours, and nothing is as it seems. The waiter told me that they like to balance their desserts with some savoury flavours, and it really made the desserts I'd honestly come back just for them, but I do have a rather sweet tooth. All in all, we'll be back next year, and just want to share our fondness for this place so you don't miss out on it too. Happy eating!

Yelp
This was one of the best dinner experiences I have had in some time. I live in Santa Cruz and decided to venture out on a weekday evening as the food scene in town can be repetitive. This place radiated warmth as soon as I walked in. My guest and I were greeted by two cheery gentleman who went over and beyond our entire meal. The indoor aesthetic was very cozy. Jazz was playing in the background and it kind of felt like we were far far away from California. The food: where to even begin. Easily the BEST oysters I've ever consumed which did pair perfectly with the recommended Brut. The gluten-free popovers were a delightful surprise on the menu. Had TWO rounds of those babies. I chose the swordfish entree and it was so fresh and tasty. Lastly, we finished with a gluten-free love cake (?) and it was thick and easy to share. I didn't LOVE the smoked sable appetizer (mainly because it was chilled) and yet the flavors on the plate were complimentary and unique. I seriously can't wait to go back. Treat yourself...and maybe leave the kids at home for this gem. ;)
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
What a lovely restaurant to spend an evening at. We were warmly welcomed as soon as we entered. The owners were very nice and the gentleman owner made the rounds through the restaurant and was charming and fun to engage with. I had the bouillabaisse with a delicious broth. My husband was very satisfied with the sable fish. Francis was our server and we were well looked after. Francis was a delight and treated us like family.

Yelp
My favorite spot in PG, always take friends and guests in town. This place has incredible service, adorable ambiance, and the food is absolutely incredible. Always ask for what was caught that day! The sea-to-table, along with farm-to-table, is the real standout, fresh, locally sourced, and prepared perfectly. Chefs kiss!!

Yelp
Very convenient to our Pacific Grove bed-and-breakfast two blocks away. Nice park let seating outside that was fairly well protected. Swordfish was excellent with risotto although I would've preferred a little more risotto. Petrale sole en pappilote was slightly dry, but lots of flavor. Sea bass (Corvina?) was super flavorful and yummy. Calamari was dry and blah but we have a hard time finding good calamari if it's not at the Crows Nest in Santa Cruz ! Altogether a very pleasant dinner and more reasonable than what I saw online at their website. ????? Also, fantastic is that (I think) all their fish is sustainable and local? Not sure that San Diego or South América is local. Maybe I misunderstood. Oh well. Good food!!!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
We loved Wildfish! Great service. Friendly staff. Good portions. Delicious fish. The perfect combo for our evening out. We ordered their focaccia bread but soon realized it came with two of our orders already so we took it home. It's delicious!

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
A Marine Tonic for me and Slackside for my friend here. We opted for the very creative specialty drinks...made with the oyster shell-infused vodka and the kelp-infused gin! They tasted like the sea, in a good way. The vibe was great and the proprietors were inspired and fun. We each had local sole and delicate fresh peas, followed by three desserts to split between two people. Everything was delicious and the restaurant itself is a happy place.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food great service and live music Excellent experience We will definitely return to try more fresh fish from local sources

Yelp
We came to Lover point park. I searched Google for the best restaurant near me, so it came out to me ? Wild fish Restaurant We ordered the fish chowder, fish tacos, Bouillabaisse seafood. The fish tacos were okay but the portion size was small Bouillabaisse with fish filet, clam, shrimp and mussels but the mussels weren't fresh when I bites it was terrible taste. Please make sure seafood is fresh for the plate you charged 42.00. The service wasn't bad . This place on the Lighthouse Avenue so ..no view of the sea .. have candles on table ! Pricey no problem but if the seafood please make sure it is fresh. I don't want to complain but I need to feedback so hopefully it will be better..,

Yelp
Food: we shared the shrimp boil -- spicy shrimp over saffron rice. Loved it! So flavorful. We also had very fresh oysters & a great mignonette. Ricotta salad was fresh and delicious with a lemon dressing. If I go back, I'm going to try the fish and chips -- so many people ordered it and it looked delicious!! Service: friendly but slow. Ambience: We ate outside and the ambience was great. Nice parklet. The inside is also pretty.

Yelp
Excellent service and food this afternoon, just loved everything we had. Our server (maybe the owner?) was so friendly and knowledgeable, we had the homemade shrub to drink (delicious pineapple!) and the mushrooms were so tasty (lovely creamy subtle sauce). Fantastic fish of the day and an excellent fish sandwich really hit the spot. Would have loved dessert, but ended up too full. Will definitely come back here!
google avatar

Rachelle B.

Yelp
Food was excellent! We enjoyed our meal and dessert. Our server was very friendly and helpful! They went out of their way to make us a special request. We would highly recommend the fish tacos and fish and chips. The popovers were delicious! So happy we found this place on our vacation.

Heather T.

Yelp
We have been coming to Wild Fish every few months for the past 3 years. Their fish and chips WERE the best. We felt like a splurge today and we were horribly disappointed. It was disclosed that the chef left. The cevice was old fish and the fish and chips were soggy. They used to be amazingly crispy. Just disappointed. Our server was nice. Feeling sad. We're local and used to recommend this place all the time but unless they go back to the old fish and chips we won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Wild Fish not only serves locally and sustainably caught seafood, but also prepares their fish in a beautifully and deliciously. The flavor profile beat my expectations, which were already high because of the price point. I highly recommend the whole fish (tables around us kept talking about it after seeing it come out). There was nice live music and heated outdoor seating that provided a classy and fun atmosphere. Even though the food and ambiance were on point, the biggest highlight of our experience was our server, Brandon. He is clearly extremely passionate about fishing locally and and sustainably, and his enthusiasm is so contagious it makes me so happy to be able to support local fishing practices. Overall I highly recommend Wild Fish, and ask for Brandon to learn more about the delicate and beautiful underwater ecosystem that we all play a part in.

Yelp
We now know all the good press this restaurant receives. We went in for lunch. It seems pricey however we have spent more and gotten a lot less in other restaurants. Kudos to Arturo our waiter!! He was perfect! My husband and I shared delicious brussel sprouts - a huge portion. Then we shared the bouillabaisse. Very fresh and the sauce was to die for. The focaccia they bake on the premises was incredible. We didn't have a lot of expectations but we were pleasantly surprised!! It is small so I recommend reservations especially at busy times ! Hope you enjoy as much as we did!

Yelp
If I were of the moneyed class in the Central Coast, I'd have a weekly standing table at Wild Fish. It feels like the classic & comfy neighborhood joint you're a regular at, but with very high-level food. We came here a little later (8pm) on a Thursday night pre-Labor Day weekend and had the entire front patio to ourselves. The service was warm and attentive, and the mussels steamers was hands down one of the greatest shellfish dishes of my life. The briny freshness of the mussels and the burst of citrus in the broth was crazy addictive. I'd make the drive back up to Pacific Grove just for this dish alone. Wish we had enough room for the sticky toffee pudding, but alas it's a great reason to return. This is the restaurant you're hoping for when planning that romantic Monterey weekend getway.

Yelp
3.5 actually We loved their restaurant in Mendocino for many years and were happy to see they are still in pacific grove after closing the mendo site. I think maybe going on Monday may have been a mistake but still it was not the same. The waiter was very nice but knew nothing about anything on the menu and didn't even know which oysters were on our order after we'd already asked him and he went back to the kitchen. Also it was $30 for a half dozen. That's $5 an oyster. I know it's the Bay Area but for real?! Also $4 just for 4 slices of bread They charge for the gin. Then they charge again for making it a martini. That would amount to a $22 martini. Really. Only 3 tables seated in the whole place but the service was still spotty. The sablefish was deemed a success but my halibut was way over cooked which was a shame because the quinoa and coconut brassicas with it were perfect. Never asked if we enjoyed our dishes. After another long wait and two times the waiter was going back to kitchen for dessert clarifications, we just bailed. They were out of three of the most desirable desserts. It's just a matter of time before they are not open on Mondays. No one goes there and the staff isn't up for it. Sad. Miss the Mendocino vibe. Way overpriced and not good enough for me to even cut it some slack.

Yelp
I ordered fish and chips. You get 2 good size pieces of fish along with a small amount of soggy chips. The fish was really fresh and tasted great. The batter was extra crispy but there was a spice in it that didn't taste quite right. It tasted a little like cumin. I'm not a fan of cumin and it seemed odd to have it on English fish and chips. I felt the price of $27 is a little too high. I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert. It was fantastic but too pricey- $20. Service was good. It's a small restaurant in beautiful downtown Pacific Grove

Yelp
Probably my expectations were too high..I was disappointed by Boulillabaisse that was too salty to my taste. My friend said hers was OK, so it maybe ME. Kumamoto oysters were fresh and I liked it. Service was just fine. I will give them another chance and I will order something else.

Gary H.

Yelp
Great service, fine ambience. Everything we ate was good, but nothing has the wow factor I was hoping for.

Yelp
We tried Wild Fish July 22, 2023 for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. The husband and wife owners are outgoing and like to walk the restaurant and talk with customers -- time permitting. Our server was new and did an excellent job. He made certain his tables were well cared for. The owner's passion is to source fresh local fish that isn't frozen. They display the fisheries, and location for all to observe. See picture below. The chef adds various creative local ingredients to complete the dish. The care and love creating the food may give you a more relaxing evening. The outside seating has enough heaters to keep you warm. The space feels like you are eating in an outside bistro as featured in European movies. We started the evening off with fried sablefish collar that was moist and flavorful. This was yummy. Next was a passion fruit ricotta salad and smoked fish chowder. The creamy risotto complimented the fruits. The smoked fish chowder was light and flavorful. The entrée was seared ahi and vegetables. Wow. Dessert was a decadent sticky toffee puddling with ice cream. We were surprised to find out we were dining during a Carmel Jazz festival. I believe the festival is also next weekend. The Lighthouse Jazz Quartet did an excellent job giving us music. There was a small musician cover charge which could have easily been a lot more. The owner of the Carmel Dance Center brought several students to add dance to the music. The women added elegant, and even humorous, dance to some of the songs. The Girl From Ipanema was done with about four women that danced as a team whether they were individual or a budding flower circle. We strongly recommend you give Wild Fish a try. If you are coming for music ask the restaurant if your evening has music.

Yelp
One of the worst meals I've ever been served. The halibut was tough and unseasoned, the corn coulis could have been interesting but was just not well executed. There was an inch thick slice of undercooked onion taking up space on the plate, very confusing as to what it was supposed to contribute. The popovers were dense and cold in the middle. The grits were cold, and the collard greens were ok but a little bland. The swordfish was moist, but there was very little of the blackening seasoning on it. The restaurant had such potential but was really disappointing.

Yelp
The good: The "Marine Tonic," their take on a gin and tonic garnished with kelp -- seemed like it could be weird, but I enjoyed it. The half dozen oysters were good and nicely dressed with a pomegranate mignonette. The bad: We ordered two appetizers: harissa carrots, which were seriously undercooked, and fried fingerling potatoes, which were more or less unseasoned -- basically (no salt or anything else) on them at all. My entree was the bouillabaisse, which was flavorless -- I didn't eat much of it. Supposedly all the seafood was fresh, but I have my suspicions about the shrimp and mussels in the bouillabaisse. Even the focaccia that came with it was disappointing. The meh: My gf got the seared tuna, which needed some acidity, but over all she thought it was fine. She liked the mushrooms that came with it. Other stuff: Ryan the waiter was nice. The guy who brought out my entree seemed perplexed that I needed a spoon for it. And there was no tiny fork for the mussels in it. There is supposedly a jazz quartet every Saturday night, but there was not one the Saturday we went, which was a minor bummer.

Yelp
Came here for dinner while In town. Service was prompt. Ambiance was casual though can get loud if the restaurant was 100% full. Ordered the swordfish burata which was very good. We had a nice salad with lots of ingredients. Bouillabaisse was very good with lots of seafood and a nice broth. Prices were typical of the area.

Yelp
The stars is for our waitress/hostess/bartender/on the night of 1/31. We really liked this place although bummed that they sold out on a lot of items. Our server/waitress/hostess/bartender was very nice. The place is small but busy so I can tell it's a lot for 2 people to service the restaurant especially if there is a big party and a full house. I hope the next time I come back we see our waitress again and the restaurant gets more help. If you care enough about our customers, you should care more about the people who work for you. Just a gentle reminder to the owners who pride themselves of quality and experience (according to their website).

Yelp
Excellent food and service. I had the Bouillabaisse, my wife had the Sablefish, and our dinning partners both enjoyed the halibut. Everyone enjoyed their meal. For starters we had the roasted brussel sprouts, calamari and the mussels. Thoroughly enjoyed their meal food and casual atmosphere.

Yelp
The place is cute with charm and nice jazz music playing all day long. The servers are friendly and efficient. That said the food was disappointing. The seafood chowder was not really a chowder but more of a fish soup. It didn't really have any flavor or much ingredients besides chunks of boiled fish. The fish tacos had decent chunks of cod which were tender, but under seasoned and there wasn't much beside an aioli glaze to provide flavor. The calamari was actually good with a generous helping of squid that was nicely prepared. Perhaps it was a bit too salty but the rest of the food was kinda flavorless (so it was an interesting contrast). Anyway I don't think this place was as good as the reviews would indicate.
