20 Ice Cream Shops in the U.S. with The Most Unique Flavors - AFAR

"At Wild Scoops, many ice cream names have special meanings to Alaskans. Take for instance Redoubts Revenge—a nod to an active volcano in Alaska—that mixes Chocolate ice cream with cayenne, cinnamon, and chocolate shards. Beyond the names, the ingredients are primarily locally sourced, too—from milk to add-ins like Black Cup coffee, homemade honeycomb candy, rhubarb and beets picked from customers’ gardens, and cookies made by other Anchorage area companies. Get the homemade waffle cone (made with notes of cinnamon and star anise) topped with Baked Alaska (a swirl of toasted marshmallow fluff)." - Alina Polishuk

This place is so good!!! Not sure how the other guys stay in business!!! I ordered 3 scoops in a waffle cone. The ice cream is so creamy and good. Several flavors to choose from. I don’t think you’ll go wrong choosing any of them. But samples are given if asked ☺️☺️ Stop in and get a scoop or three!

Google
This place is adorable and clearly a local favorite. I can see why, it was delicious! They have lots of flavors and options for customizing. Signs and photos on the walls describe how they’ve locally sourced their ingredients. I got there just in time. There was a line slightly out the door, but when I left it was twice as long.

Google
The line is long because everyone knows its worth the wait. My favorite combo so far is the Alaskan Blueberry with Rhubarb Crumble in a waffle cone. Tastes like blueberry cobbler. I will never come to Anchorage without stopping by this place. Best ice cream *ever!*

Google
The line was long, I almost left, but fortunately, I decided to stay. It was worth the wait. The ice cream was delicious, and the cones were baked to perfection. The staff was awesome and the prices were ok. The place is in a plaza so the parking is plenty and free. I haven't tried it but noticed they have vegan options.

If you're looking for a coffee shop with a fun atmosphere, friendly staff, and a true taste of Alaska, Wild Scoops is the place to go! From the moment I walked in, I could feel the energy--cozy, welcoming, and perfect for catching up with friends or spending time with family. The staff was fantastic--super friendly, attentive, and you could tell they genuinely love what they do. What really stood out to me was the quality of the ingredients. You can tell they source locally, which makes every drink and bite feel like a little taste of home. Whether it's their rich, smooth coffee or their fresh pastries, everything has that authentic Alaska-made touch. It's always great to support a local business, and Wild Scoops makes it easy with their top-notch service and fantastic products. If you haven't checked this place out yet, do yourself a favor and stop by, this spot is an absolute gem!

Google
As is evident by the fact that no is there a line out of the door, but they actually need a sign to tell you which way to stand not to block other stores, the ice cream. Here is absolutely delicious. Extra extraordinarily friendly servers and a nice little patio outside where you can sit on picnic but just to enjoy.

Google
Wasn't familiar with this ice cream shop but it was recommended by someone people we met out and about. So glad we decided to stop by and try. We lined up just as the rush was getting started. You will probably have to wait in line, but it is really worth it. The Baked Alaska cone was so good! A wonderful treat for the day. The staff was also patient as we tried flavors and asked questions. They have GF/DF options, a nice surprise and allowed everyone in our group to try something.

Google
Popular ice cream joint. The vegan ice cream sandwiches are the bomb. I wish they had more vegan flavors in the scooping section but the sandwiches help make up for it.

Yelp
This ice cream shop had a line out the door and around the sidewalk, but as it was recommended by multiple people to us we decided to wait in line to see what the hype was about, and we were not disappointed! There were so many unique flavors of ice cream, and you can tell the ice cream is locally made and high quality. As many other reviewers have said, get the waffle cone and get the baked Alaska marshmallow topping! Both were delicious and added to the uniqueness of the spot. There is limited seating inside and outside so don't count on getting a spot, but good ice cream is good ice cream whether eaten in the store or in your car so don't let that stop you from coming here to try this place out!

Yelp
This is a very well-known ice cream shop that I saw on a few Alaska travel videos before making my way to Anchorage. My expectations were low because usually fame does not equal quality. However, I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of very unique flavors, such as Fireweed, which tasted like a rhubarb honey. On any cone, you have the option of getting baked Alaska, which is a layer of marshmallow fluff that is torched like a roasted campfire marshmallow. The waffle cones are flavorful and have a stronger taste of cinnamon that I'm used to encountering and waffle cones. They had a big selection of flavors and many of them had vegan counterparts I can't tell you how much I enjoyed the baked Alaska topping on my ice cream cone. It was a unique experience and flavor.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place because it was just down the street from our hotel and visited multiple times. They have so many flavors to choose from and it changes daily, so it's hard to choose. The must for me though is the baked Alaska topping. I've tried to recreate it at home and I just can't get it right.

Yelp
This IS Alaskan ice cream. A great place for locals because it's so delicious, but also great for tourists who can try new local flavors like Spruce tip. Wait in line, get the home-made waffle cone and get an extra scoop cause this place is bomb. I noticed the table situation and seating is severely lacking. They could put up some cheap folding tables with colorful umbrellas outside during the summer to add some visibility and places to sit. The place gets crowded and lots of people are just standing around like homeless people with ice cream cones in their hand. If you like ice cream (who doesn't?!), you NEED to come here. Such a great concept. I wish these guys continued success and sweet treats.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this cutie place! You can get any ice cream topped with toasted marshmallow, and it is absolutely as good as it sounds. I opted for the fresh blueberry ice cream and it was so amazing. I honestly wish I had gotten a chocolate flavor for more of a s'mores situation, but it was still amazing. Fresh waffle cone, creamy ice cream, and toasted marshmallow topping loved it.

Yelp
WOW WOW WOW! I have absolutely no words for how delicious this ice cream was. I came around 7:30pm and the line was to the door, but it went by super fast. Apparently during peak season, the line is way far out the door. The service went by super quickly. They had a variety of unique flavors and I sampled a few, but the Sitka Swirl was absolutely delicious. I got it baked Alaska style, which was definitely the right move! It is $3 extra, but so worth it in my opinion. I want all my ice creams I eat to be baked Alaska style. It's a cute little shop with limited seating indoors and a few benches outdoors. They have different flavors from time to time. Definitely worth the trip when you come to Anchorage. We got 2 ice cream cones, one baked Alaska style and one regular for $13.50, which is pretty average for an ice cream shop. Great place!

Yelp
Wild scoops is a local Alaskan staple, with delicious flavors made with local, homegrown ingredients. While the line can be a bit long, especially on warm summer days, it's always worth the wait and I love getting a pint to go. Highly recommend as a delectable ice cream stop in Anchorage!

Yelp
Always love going to Wild Scoops even when it is minus 30° out. Big fan of the sitka swirl, their cookies and cream, and the blueberry. Always get great service.

Yelp
Love this local ice cream shop! Such innovative yummy ice cream flavors. Lines may be long but well worth it and moves quickly. There isn't a ton of seating area but I don't mind just standing or sitting on the back bench to finish my ice cream. Don't forget about their winter punch card! Double stamps for when it's below freezing or actively snowing out

Yelp
Wildscoops is a uniquely Alaskan handcrafted ice cream shop. They have chocolate and vanilla, as well as 10 rotating flavors, including seasonal flavors. My favorites are anything coffee related, like their black cup coffee. I also like their pumpkin gingerbread which I came here today for. A single scoop is 5.25 +$1 for a sugar cone and more for a waffle cone which they make in house. They also have many flavors they make vegan as well. You can also get a root beer float with moose's tooth rootbeer. Midtown location is open year round and they have a sitting area inside. Pro tip: you can get a sample of any flavor and you can get a split single scoop, two flavors for one price!!

Yelp
This Wild Scoops is located in the same plaza as Great Harvest Bread (on the opposite side) and Metro Cooks with plenty of parking available. I have gone to this location twice and wished there was one back at home in Los Angeles because the flavored ice creams they have available is very good. On my first visit, my husband and I were greeted by a friendly employee behind the counter. We ended up purchasing: Double Scoop (in a bowl), $7.50- We ended up choosing Fireweed and AK Birch Almond. Fireweed is a tall wildflower that grows abundantly in Alaska, and is affected by forest fires (thus the name). This pretty flower had a nice floral sweetness that I really liked. The birch almond was also very good with vanilla ice cream mixed with swirls of birch syrup. For those of you that do not know, birch syrup is processed from birch wood (which seems to be abundant here in Alaska) and depending on when it is harvested (as my husband and I had learned from a tour that there are different runs), it has a nice caramel flavor and can resemble the consistency of molasses. This syrup had a nice flavor balance with the vanilla. Portion size for this double scoop bowl was pretty generous and actually a great price because back home, I have paid a little more for less of the amount. The second time my husband and I visited, we came last Saturday in which Alaska 529 (an organization that can help those budget for school) was buying every visitor a free scoop of Wild Scoops (at all 3 of their locations). On this visit, we ended up getting: Bridge Creek Birch on sugar cone- This ice cream is similar to the AK Birch Almond but is made with oat milk and birch syrup instead. My husband was curious to see how this would compare with the other version and so he ordered it. He liked it but I didn't. I thought the oat milk had a strong after taste. The sugar cone itself was good though. Wild Blueberry- Alaska is also known for their wild blueberries so I decided to try this. I am not the biggest blueberry fan but I really loved this ice cream. The flavors were pronounced and not artificial tasting. I loved that the ice cream was nice and creamy. Both my husband (and our little girl, who also loves ice cream too) and I really loved the local flavors that Wild Scoops had to offer. If you are looking to try a local favorite, then make sure to visit any of Wild Scoops locations. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A fun ice cream shop serving up unique Alaskan flavors -- stopped by on a rainy day in Anchorage, but there were still a ton of folks in line so you know it's local-approved. They have a fun history and started as a food truck before growing into a brick-and-mortar establishment, complete with a 'test kitchen' to develop new flavors. They have tables inside and it was a cozy vibe with the rain outside. The employees are super sweet, and let us sample a few flavors! I got the Baked Alaska and it was SO. GOOD. and also probably best shared between two people -- the base ice cream was Malted Cookies and Cream with the toasted marshmallow fluff on top! Might be common sense, but it's worth noting that you can only get the fluff toasted if you opt for a cone because of fire hazards -- my friend got a cup and so her fluff was plain and it was a bit on the gummier side. I LOVED the toasted one, though!

Yelp
Delicious, locally owned ice cream shop. They have a few locations throughout Anchorage but only one was open when we were visiting in March. There was a long line when we went on a weeknight. We loved the malted milk and cookies and the white raven (cookies and cream) flavors. Both had lots of big chunks of cookies inside. The waffle cone made in house was also very fragrant but it was a bit thick for our taste (we prefer a thinner, more crisp cookie). There's a good amount of seating inside, which is especially helpful when visiting in the winter when it's too cold to eat outside. Definitely a must try for fun local flavors for anyone visiting Anchorage!

Yelp
Stopped here to get a couple pints and I have to say this shop is so cute! The service is impeccable and the Best part is the Employees were the BEST I was so impressed on how nice everyone single one that I talked too was soooo NICE while this spot was popping and you know customers sometimes are not the most pleasant.. But these Employees deserve a Big Shout out for being Above and Beyond! Keep your smiles on and delivering an Awesome product!

Yelp
I wish I had the stomach for more sweetness when leaving for my flight from Alaska, but I opted for a kids small scoop. I missed out on the Alaskan baked cone, but regardless the ice cream was fantastic. I got the tart rhubarb 10/10. I came in thinking fireweed was going to taste like the tart rhubarb but it was more licorice-y and hits you in the face

Yelp
There's just something about s'mores ice cream with toasted marshmallows that's just so yummy ! Definitely my go dessert this summer !
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Great ice cream spot! Unique flavors to choose from made it fun. Seasonal and local ingredients used. The blueberry and fireweed flavors were mild in flavor. The cookies and cream and rhubarb were on point! Bold in flavor and creamy. Yum...

Yelp
So good that we visited twice on our vacation in 2019! Highly recommend. :) It's a cute shop with some different flavor options. :3

Yelp
I'm know I'm in the minority, but I wasn't really a fan. I sampled 3 of their fun flavors (eggnog ginger snap, rubharb almond cookie, chocolate sunbutter) and didn't like any of them and was too embarrassed to get yet another sample so got a safe choice of Sitka Swirl (salted caramel). It was decent, a bit too sweet for my preference - which was surprising since the other samples weren't especially sweet. I love their creative flavor ideas, but they just didn't work for me. I'm also not typically seeking ice cream when it is freezing outside - but we were nearby and I was so curious about the flavors! Hope to try again and maybe just cycle through more samples before deciding.

Yelp
This is the place to go for fresh local ice cream. Decent selections of flavors. They even have ice cream nachos with 3 scoops of ice cream and waffle cone chips. Ice creams were creamy and flavorful
google avatar

Yelp
Local Ice Cream Shop that has some fun and inventive Ice Cream using local ingredients. Mad genius with some of the creations. They have 2 stores (Benson Blvd and Downtown Anchorage). On a weeknight, we stopped by to get some delicious ice cream and there was a line out the door at 7 pm! Items we ordered: 1. Flight Sampler: 5 stars - 4 Single scoops - I got the Alaskan Wild Blueberry, Moose's Tooth Root Bear, Sunshine Club (Lemon curd w Snickerdoodle) and Vegan Bear Hug (chocolate oat milk w mixed berry swirl) NOTE: They have normal staples but most of the flavors will Seasonally change. So be ready for a new flavor throughout the seasons! Definitely will be back!

Yelp
This place has rave reviews and it did not disappoint. I love local hand made foods when traveling, and I love ice cream, so this was a given to try. I had the wild blueberry and rhubarb - both were incredible. My wife had the rhubarb as well. 2 of my daughters had Sitka swirl and the other fruity pebbles. All of us were very happy with our choices. Looks like they rotate flavors and we'll be coming back before our trip is over to try other flavors.
google avatar

Shanul M.

Yelp
Delicious Ice Cream! So far everything I've tried here is amazing! I'm a simple person so my usual go to is either Vanilla or Chocolate which are both very rich in flavor. My new current favorite flavor that I tried was the honeycomb swirl, that was just off the hook!! I also was able to try their freshly made waffle cone and it was probably one of the best I've had in a long time. Everyone is very friendly and are more than accommodating whenever you want to try out new flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum. Yum. Yum. Love this place is a local small business that started as a food truck. Love that they support local artists by displaying their work for sale. Love that they collab with other local businesses to create ice cream flavors. Love that the waffle cones are made in house. Love the smell from the home made waffle cones, you can smell it from outside, pulling you in. We had the Alaska cone w moose track root beer. It was so delicious! The toasted marshmallow fluff on top of the home made waffle cone was amazing. Definitely recommend this local spot. Must try!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Who would have thought - ice cream in the winter in Alaska with lines and unique flavors. We went nearly every day trying new flavors.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
A no doubt 5 star review. If I could give 6 stars I would. I consider myself an ice cream connoisseur, and Wild Scoops did not disappoint. I would come here daily if I wasn't aware of what a daily visit would do to my waistline. So so so so good.
google avatar

Lin H.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever! Innovative & fun flavors with a rich cream base...and a line out the door at 8:00 on a Friday night. They must be doing something right. surprise! It's the ice cream! Go. Go now.
google avatar

Ryan Z.

Yelp
Good ice cream, reasonable prices, quick service, and nice indoor and outdoor seating. If you haven't had ice cream in Alaska, you need to! For some reason, it's all the rage all year long here. Wild scoops seems to be the most popular place. You can ask for samples of the flavors as well, and I was very happy with the cookie dough and wild blueberry flavors. They were rich in flavor, large scoops, and creamy.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Nice folks efficient service and great selection. Everything you need in an ice cream shop
google avatar

Sonia S.

Yelp
I had such a great experience at wild scoops! So many of their flavors were fresh and delicious. I also appreciate how they source and incorporate local flavors. I enjoyed the local art for sale on the walls as well. We paid a bit extra for the baked Alaska ice cream for them to top your scoop with marshmallow and blow torch it. This place is definitely worth the visit!
google avatar

Geneva B.

Yelp
Ok, wow! The freshest ice cream! I'm not even sure if that makes sense but it tastes like it was just made. So creamy, so good, so pretty I dont even like blueberry and loved their local blue blue berry ice cream. The girls were so nice and so patient with us while we were deciding. It's just a window so grab a seat on a nearby bench and enjoy. Honestly 10/10!
google avatar

Yelp
I feel so lucky to have the midtown Wild Scoops close to home. They're always so creative with their Alaska theme flavors. What I like also is the fact that they offer at least a few options for vegan ice cream. I'm not vegan, but I do love the taste of their coconut milk ice cream, and many of the flavors they mix into it. I'm very grateful for the generous amount of samples they let you try before picking out the flavor you like. They change up their flavors weekly, but also have a few staples, like their birch flavor, spruce tips, and more. I'd love it off they offered more of those ice cream tacos, because I've never tried one and would love to try something new, especially since it's made from their homemade waffle cone. Their waffle cone is the best part about Wild Scoops. It's not only homemade, but it's very flavorful and delicious!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
The local ice cream shop, which is worth the hype. Their reasonable prices, variety of flavors, and friendly service pulled the crowd even at 15-degree temperatures. If you love ice cream, then it's worth a visit.
google avatar

Nicole W.

Yelp
Ok so the line was out the door (just like everything in Anchorage) - but this place was absolutely worth the wait. Delicious ice cream and really inventive flavors. The homemade waffle cones were perfection. I'd wait in line all over again.
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
This is a fabulous ice cream shop. Adorable decor and plentiful seating. This location is near the Wild Scoops Test kitchen. They just put up new art by a local artist and it's adorable. The service is excellent. Each time we came during our Alaska vacation (4 times in seven days so far) we've had patient, friendly service. My favorite is the wild blueberry but I have liked almost everything. Definitely recommend!!!

Yelp
This was my first time in Alaska, and I heard really great things about this ice cream shop so of course I had to try it out. I am following a plant-based diet, and have been for a really long time. So I was really excited when I saw that they had vegan options for choices. This shop was bigger than the first one that I went to. It had two vegan options, a vegan cake batter and a mango sorbet. I really appreciated this because I feel like ice cream shops should have at least three options for people who are dairy free or vegan. Anyway I got cake batter again for the second time and I didn't care cause it was so good! The waffle cone was so good, and of course I had to get the baked Alaska on top of my ice cream. Such great flavor, and it wasn't too heavy, this probably being that they mix two choices of plant-based milks when they do their formula for their vegan ice cream. I really enjoyed it. So much so that I went to the second location in Anchorage on the same day. I was really glad that both locations gave me the same experience. It seems like everyone who works there really like each other and that makes for a great customer experience in my opinion. 10 out of 10 would recommend, and dead. My friend went to Anchorage three days ago and of course I had to recommend wild scoops to her. She loved it. I am I'm excited to return on my next trip to Anchorage and look forward to baked Alaska on my ice cream!
google avatar

Kristi A.

Yelp
Baked Alaska - out of this world. The ice cream is so rich and creamy. A definite stop if you're near by!
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
Every town needs that old school ice cream locale. Morsels of sugar shimmering under the florescent lights of an ice cream cooler. And in Alaska, Wild Scoops is that place. If you are looking for the calmer, more relaxing location, this is the one for you. I don't eat ice cream. Too much sugar for me. But there is no denying that this ice cream is the full experience. Free samples, lots of unique choices, and friendly service. While they have normal flavors like chocolate and vanilla, their true creations come in the form of playing with local flavors and seasonal items like spruce tips and rhubarb. And they have local artwork displayed. And they support local organizations. When we were there, there was an option to support PRIDE month by buying a little flag. There are cartons of ice cream sell AND ice cream sandwiches. Tables inside and out for your enjoyment. And, if the ice cream wasn't enough to cool you off, they have a notice on the door that they now have air conditioning.
google avatar

Jean L.

Yelp
As good as all the 5 star reviews claim. I had root beer float ice cream in a waffle cone & spouse had spiced rhubarb in a baked Alaska cone. If I get the chance I will be back!

Colter B.

Yelp
Was really excited to see they had vegan ice cream!! Delicious! Vegan fireweed is so good
google avatar

Ethan S.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever. Really I wish I could just leave it at that but that doesn't do Wild Scoops justice. For starters, the ever revolving flavors (minus the few constants) makes going to Wild Scoops a journey every time I visit Alaska. I've gone to Wild scoops 7ish times now, and I don't believe I have had the same flavor twice. The most impressive part I have never been disappointed with an ice cream flavor I've gotten from Wild scoops. Are there some I enjoy more than others, of course, are there any I would say "don't get this flavor", not in a million years. Although, what I suppose helps me always pick the perfect flavor is the dedication to service that the employees provide. The willingness to provide samplings of various flavors is astounding, I typically limit myself because I know I could go through trying every one of their new flavors that I have yet to try. To cap off this review is the pièce de résistance of Wild scoops, their Baked Alaska Cone, which consists of a homemade waffle cone, filled with Ice cream of your choice, all topped with toasted marshmallow fluff. The homemade waffle cone is unique as it is clearly made with fresh spices that give it a robust flavor. Then, topping it all off with toasted marshmallow fluff provides a subtle sweetness that brings the cone together perfectly. The only critique I can make of Wild Scoops, is that I wish their ice cream sandwiches, which are delicious, had double the amount of ice cream between the decadent cookies.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
Love it here the music is very chill and the ice cream flavors are on point. The marshmallow fluff is a must try, the service is quick and the cones were perfectly scooped and torched.
google avatar

alyse s.

Yelp
Friendly service, delicious ice cream and the smell of waffle cones baking, need I say more? On a busy summer evening, the service was fast and Ecco or t but also attentive. So glad we stopped on our visit to Anchorage.
google avatar

Vishal D.

Yelp
Really creamy, flavorful, and the first time I had tried a beet ice cream. Not overly sweet but very well flavored. Unique ambiance and had ample amount of seating. Would recommend.
google avatar

Bailey S.

Yelp
I love that they incorporate local ingredients into their flavors. When I got the Baked Alaska style, I was initially a little disappointed at the size of the marshmallow, but it lasted enough to get a little bit in every bite. It's expensive, but a good tourist treat to feel like you've tasted Alaskan flavors.

Daniel K.

Yelp
So good. They also had four vegan flavors! I tried two of them and one of them was very much to my liking. It was the best vegan ice cream I've ever had-the fireweed was so good. The cones were really good too. Everyone in the party really enjoyed the ice cream
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
This location is one of two in Anchorage, this one being their only brick and mortar store. (The location in downtown is just a window where you order from the street with no place inside to sit). Both locations seem to offer the same flavors. I'm a big fan of the spruce tips and the Sitka swirl, and I cannot resist the warm waffle cone. The staff is friendly. The ambiance is inviting. The ice cream is delicious. Pints to go if you can't get enough, like me.
google avatar

Vidya P.

Yelp
Delicious, Rich, creamy, and perfectly flavored! Would very highly recommend wild scoops! Ordered the sampler with Alaskan roasted beetroot ice cream, Sitka sea salt swirl, AK rhubarb jam crumble, and AK fireweed with honey. Have to admit I was incredibly surprised by the beet root! I loved how perfect the sweetness was with textures of beet root throughout! I know I'll definitely visit the next time I'm back! Ambiance was great. Many seats available, and clean environment. Great service! Would very highly recommend.
