5 Black-Owned Distilleries Worth Visiting for Bourbon, Gin, and More

"It’s their way or the highway in Houston. Highway Distillery, which opened in February 2019, was the dual genesis of co-owners and friends Wendell Robbins III and Ben Williams. Their claim to fame—or rather, their main offering—is a hemp-based vodka. After refining their process for nearly a decade, they arrived at their final result, a six-time distilled vodka that according to them has a smoother mouthfeel than any other vodka on the market. Use a tool on their website to find nearby bars that serve Highway vodka."

Google
Great time at William Price Distilling! We happened to show up at Power Hour and took fun advantage of it! 5$ old fashioned and $5 lemoncello lavender martinis!! Staff was friendly, approachable, and made great drinks! We will definitely be back!

Google
I have been coming here for every a year and I have enjoyed my time and cocktails every single time!! Morgan, Emerald and Adam are not only the nicest people but amazing at their job. I enjoy them so much and this place. 10/10 come here!

Google
Really excellent happy hour drink prices, and I love that the place was family-friendly. Between that, free popcorn, and charming ambiance, I'm delighted my sister introduced me to this distillery. I will definitely return on my next visit to Houston.

Google
Recommend the cocktail flight if you’re stuck between a few choices. The liquor flight was too strong for me. The chocolates from Mostly Chocolate can be purchased separately from the whiskey flight and were so good we made Mostly Chocolate our next stop of the day. Great staff made the visit worth it!

Google
William Price Distilling holds its own in the spirits business. We had the pleasure of attending one of their cocktail making classes- the cocktails were strong and the ambiance was even better. Their rye holds up to many we've had in Kentucky! A great local business that deserves your thirst :)

Google
We had a great experience at William Price. The service was top notch and the cocktails were very good. And while their liqueurs were all very tasty be aware that their whiskey is primarily rye so be warned if you aren’t a fan. Otherwise it was a pretty cool place but they are in the process of setting up their operation so there is not much to see in back yet.

Google
I first found out about William Price Distilling when I acquired a bottle from them that was a Balcones whisky aged in a Sherry cask. This was an AWESOME first impression. I decided to go visit the distillery as they are on the Texas Whisky Trail. Clare was gracious to show us around and tell us all about their spirits and what they are up to. It is awesome to see them working alongside others and what they have in the making. I love it when distilleries feature other distilleries as it is a double win for the customer. The prices were extremely fair and their other spirits are delicious. Their coffee liqueur and limoncello were absolutely addictive. Thank you for the great visit and great tasting - I will certainly be looking out for more of your projects in the future.

Google
I have been to a LOT of great distilleries this year, but what keeps me coming back to William Price so often is the consistency, convenience, and creative set of experiences. Cocktail classes, watch parties for sports, excellent food truck partnerships, a massive assortment of spirits and cocktails, and easy parking to boot? Too good to pass up!

Yelp
When a friend was in town, we decided to venture over to D'Alba but wanted to get a few drinks beforehand and found William Price Distilling. To our luck, it was "Power Hour" while we were there which meant martinis (espresso, lemon drop and lychee) and old fashions were only $3. Additionally, you can order them in martini trees of different sizes and they honor those prices. With the drinks being such a great price, we ordered one of everything to try. The espresso martini was great and one of the better ones I've tried. The lemon drop and lychee martinis were also good but overly sweet for me and I knew I'd get sick if I drank the full one. The service was fantastic and the employees were friendly/ happy to answer any questions. The place itself is cute with lots of great little photo spots and also has a nice outdoor patio area with some games. They also host trivia style events and have free popcorn for while you're there. While there weren't many people that came in while we were there, we had a great time and will absolutely be going back!

Yelp
I have been wanting to check out William Price Distilling for some time now and FINALLY made it over. Coincidentally it was during their "power hour" every week day from 5-6 pm and from 3-4 pm on Saturday and Sunday, they offer power hour where they offer $5 old fashions and $3 martinis. They also offer 1/2 odd martini and mimosa towers on Tuesdays. It was such a great place to hang out. Lots of outdoor seating which is dog and children friendly (they have a play set, outdoor games, and swings for adults and kids), plenty of indoor seating between multiple different areas. I love that they make their own alcohol and fixings for their drinks, offer wine and beer (from walking stick brewing) so everyone in your party has plenty of options!

Schottsie H.

Yelp
The drinks were delicious. Friendly staff and a great power hour ($5 old fashions and $3 martinis) 5pm to 6pm weekday and 3pm to 4pm on weekends. Other specials too. Dogs are welcome in the outside area which also has a small play area for the kiddos.

Yelp
We LOVE this place. Every time we go we feel right at home. Last night we went for Bingo Night (so fun - highly recommend), and I asked if they had a drink on the menu that I had loved in the past. Sadly, they have retired the drink (their Garden Gimlet), but then Jose (one of their awesome staff members) mentioned they had a basil plant growing in the back that they might be able to use to recreate the drink with the essential ingredient. He disappeared for a few minutes, and then returned with fresh basil! He then proceeded to make me a Garden Gimlet literally fresh from their garden. Now that is service!! Not only that, but we both walked away winners from bingo. How do you beat that? Such a fun night, but always a great time at WP. They have customers in us for life!

Yelp
Showed up for lunch and it was closed with no signage about hours. Pass. Had been looking forward to craft cocktails and snacks.

Yelp
Opening during the pandemic 2020, 1 of the owners, Bryan Mc Clery, who came from a military background and had seen Scotland distilleries in his younger days, decided to open this Htown brick and mortar outside 610. A great thank you to Clare for her tour of this lovely establishment that offers an allday Sunday brunch from 11 to 8pm. How cool is that ? The best copper stills in the world come from Scotland and are handhammered, which you can see here. They started selling hand sanitizer made from whiskey and scented with essential oils so lessened the alcohol smell when it was hard to find hand sanitizer early Covid pandemic. Dr Tory Hardisty a PhD.chemist helped develop the sanitizer which they did for a year before selling alcohol . They have 1 small still used to make specialty alcohol products and hope to have another up by 2024. Currently purchasing GNS ( grain neutral spirits) to make spirits . Such as: Rye whiskey from Indiana and potatoe based Vodka from Poland Smoother process and easier to drink without the burn typically feel. Also learned the wet barrel purchased offer a nice finish from whatever was in it previously. Once dry they can no longer be used and often are made into furniture. Some breweries even bought finished beer in wet rye to make a vanilla stout.Brilliant !! Currently, the barrels take 4 to 6 months minimum to finish a specialty spirit. Come visit for a great tour and for brunch. This place would be a great location for small parties or meetings. Will definitely come again!!

Yelp
Okay, but nothing to write home about. They don't seem to distill in house rather contracting it out. It does look like they are installing stills. Very kid friendly, but also very noisy at times. The bartender was engaging. Limited selection of drinks but tasty. We bought a bottle of the coffee liquor to take home but when we got home we noticed there was no seal on it so we will likely toss it. That was an expensive waste. If we were in the area we might pop in but definitely would not go out of our way.

San W.

Yelp
We've been here several times. The coffee liqueur is the go-to in our house to introduce people to the brand. I'm less a fan of the other spirits but I believe they will grow & bring more great offerings! The staff here is FANTASTIC! So friendly!

Yelp
We hosted a little get together here. They have a nice room to the right of the entrance that has a tv to watch or play video games. I loved the vibes of the interior. The exterior has picnic tables to allow families with children to play. Now on to the good part. We tried most of the drinks. The espresso martini stands out the most. They have quite a few coffee liqueur drinks. I also liked the smooth taste of the vodka. Overall this was a great experience. The staff were extremely knowledgeable about their products and were able to provide recommendations of drinks.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about the coffee liquor. If you only do one thing, come here for the Espresso Martini.

Yelp
Very cool spot. Went for a holiday event and was not disappointed. The cocktails were diverse, well priced, and tasty. The front was smallish but the backroom is plenty roomy. Have to say, the Honey Badger Amaro is one of the best liqueurs Ive had in a spell. We went on the coldest day of the year and still had a great time. Would definitely visit again.

Audrey G.

Yelp
Morgan is awesome. Hilarious and offered great service! Definitely coming back! So excited to see the distillery grow!

Yelp
William Price popped up on my instagram feed a few weeks ago and I gave them a follow. They constantly advertise their happy hour with 50 percent off select drinks and select pours. Unfortunately that is a big stretch of the truth as there is only one drink on happy hour and no pours on happy hour. Ordered one happy hour drink and one regular price. Drinks were good just a bit disappointed with the false advertising there.

Yelp
The potato vodka is hands down one of the best on the planet. Made from potato, it literally washes over like water with just a little burn and full flavor. The grounds were still under construction, but the staff is amazing and just overlook it. The Saturn Redux, the Boxing Julep, and the old fashion were all amazing as well. Ask for a sample and they have you. Louisa is an amazing waitress. Very attentive, knowledgeable, personable, and all around sweet lady. Great drinks? Check. Great drinks? Check. Great staff? Check. Rock solid 5 stars.

Yelp
Met my long time friend there to catch up on life. The place was super cute. Intimate and vibrant. A whole vibe. Every drink we ordered was balanced perfectly. We even got a FREE whiskey tasting. I love the area so much. The convenience of walking to a brewery and winery AMAZING...definitely going back

Yelp
Very cute neighborhood bar. They sell bottles of potato vodka, straight rye whiskey, & coffee liqueur. They also make hand sanitizer that you can purchase at HEB. On Thursdays Move Yoga has outdoor yoga classes ($22) After attending a class you can enjoy $1 off drinks! I believe the HH is all day Thursday & the drinks are about $8 The Boxing Julep was boozy & refreshing. One of their newer drinks is a Coffee Manhattan & it was amazing! One of my new favorite go-to chill bars. This is a perfect summer hang-out spot.

Yelp
First time here and it was a great experience! I went to get some of the Cruda BBQ that was there (10/10 for all their plates btw) and the distillery has a great ambience and the drinks are all great! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good liquor. Better cocktails. Awesome people. Had a blast at Thursday bingo! Won a prize.

Yelp
Looking for something to do... date night, day drinking, Sunday funday??? We "stumbled" (jk), we walked into this BA of a place. The place itself is super cool, yard games, plenty of places to sit indoor and outdoor. Bartender Chris was super knowledgeable and could pour a great cocktail. From bourbon, gin, vodka, and rum this little place has it all. There is no reason why this place should not be busy when they're open. If you're in the area go experience it for yourself.
google avatar

Rachel Z.

Yelp
The experience was great! The bartender was really friendly. We got there early on Memorial Day. Family friendly venue. My cocktail was great. The chocolate pairing for the whiskeys were absolutely delicious and really balanced the whiskeys in the flight. My boyfriend had expected a bit more on the flavor from the spirits in the tasting. All in all a great experience overall.

L. H.

Yelp
Very attentive staff... great ambience and vibes! Seasonal menu and was told them change the menu often which is fun!, and will have to come for winter's drinks! Had the pumpkin spice espresso martini which was delicious. Not too sweet, and a subtle pumpkin spice taste. Absolutely loved the refreshing not a ranch water drink! So freaking good! Also was able to try the alcoholic hot chocolate which was fabulous, but the wine was by far the Irish coffee!!! Definitely coming back for this one!!!

Yelp
We went for bingo Thursday night. Other than some popcorn, there was no food available or food truck available tonight. People started getting in line for the bingo night at 7:40 and it was advertised to begin at 7:00.
google avatar

Yanela G.

Yelp
So we went for the tasting experience, on a Sunday and were told they only do that on the weekends. Since we were already there, we did a whiskey flight and got a few drinks. Outdoor space with picnic tables and some "yard" games like oversized jenga and connect four, also two corn hole set ups. They put a speaker outside for us to enjoy some music as well. The whiskey flight came in two ways, a top shelf with a single malt and two additional choices, or choose your won three, excluding the single malt. I ordered a smoked old fashioned, and it was great. The cider on tap was fruit forward and very refreshing as well. Overall no real complaints just wanted a little more from the experience.

Yelp
Refreshing cocktails are to be enjoyed here. It's a great location, two breweries and a winery are within walking distance. They are super accommodating if you bring your pups, they'll check up on you in you need another drink and will offer recommendations. I had the Saturn Redux - a refreshing tropical drink which quenched my thirst on a sunny afternoon and a Boxing Julep - a fruity take on a Julep with hints of apricot and peach. Parking is plentiful here and the bartenders are wonderful.

Moriah F.

Yelp
SUCH A SLAY!!! bingo night was so fun, the ambiance is awesome! drinks were good (strong but good). highlight of my week honestly!! bartenders were awesome & fun! 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
My husband loved his Old Fashioned, was only missing the cherry and orange slice. I really enjoyed the Boxing Julep!! The Potato Vodka is crazy smooth! The Saturn Redux is really good and refreshing! They are still working on building up outside but it's still a soft opening so give them a chance!

Yelp
To begin with, you get to experience brilliant ambience, friendly and intelligent staff and sanitized tables. Now let's talk Whiskey's - They have two wonderful blended whiskeys. Both are limited editions and tastes rich if having neat. For those who like cocktails, this is a place to be at which is fairly priced. Love their Old Fashioned but they have other cocktails which is very well made and presented.

Vincent W.

Yelp
Solid stop for a cocktail made with craft spirits. Craft spirits here include whiskey, vodka, liqueurs & others. Fantastic staff. Spirit flights seemed overpriced to us so we just ordered some cocktails. Decent cocktails with a creative selection. If you happen to be in the area, check this place out.

Yelp
We happened in here during the Astros playoffs. I wasn't sure it would be a good game watching spot, but our friends (with a kid) wanted to go for the pumpkin painting/seasonal activities they had set up for kids. I was pleasantly surprised! They were well prepared for fans with the game on a big screen and the sound on. All the staff and the owner were so welcoming and kind. And the drinks were tasty too! I think between all of us, we tried everything during our visit. We'll definitely be back!

Nealetti J.

Yelp
Firstly I need to give a HUGE THANK YOU TO JOSÉ!!!!! While scrolling on Eventbrite I blindly ran across this amazing establishment, hoping to experience their Thursday night bingo. Unfortunately bingo was cancelled BUT José had such great energy we decided to stay and try a couple of their flights... AMAZING! Josè gave us a wonderful tour and also, the cute esthetic allowed us to get some bomb insta photos we WILL be back for bingo and Thank you again José!! 10/10 WOULD RECOMMEND

Yelp
My boss sent me out to find a local liquor distillery for our grand opening. I was told by a neighbor, that I could find one within walking distance. We stopped in, and they have the best liquors, (before/after the cocktail). Not only did we have their liquor at our reception, but we almost ran out! Nobody drank the wine or beer, everyone wanted cocktails, and they were what everyone was talking about. We have personally gone back for cocktails and for liquor/sanitizer (they have great scents that don't smell like the cheap tequila ones, that everyone was putting out). Our favorite scent is the lavender/sandalwood. Luisa is the bar manager, and amazing! Go see her and her team for an amazing cocktail night, and grab a bottle for your home, while you are there!
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
One of the best old fashioneds I have had in Houston. Great bartenders and atmosphere.
google avatar

Britney G.

Yelp
We went for the soft opening, so didn't get to enjoy everything that they might offer. But, what we did enjoy, was the cocktails! They do a really good job coming up with and delivering tasty and unique adult drinks. The Potato Vodka was really good, but I was sad to here that it wasn't distilled there and shipped in instead. I am not sure about the rest of their offerings, but I hope they distill something here in Houston!
google avatar

Donald J.

Yelp
Had a great time. The whiskey is so smooth. Will be returning. Will do the tour next time. Go give them a try.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Great vibe, great cocktails, great staff. I hope they can keep growing and making this neighborhood gem in to a world class distillery. Cheers!

Yelp
What an amazing experience! It all started off at the Urban Harvest Farmers Market where I ran across a very nice gentleman who was selling hand sanitizer made by the William Price Distilling Company... The gentleman was so knowledgeable and friendly that it led to me actually leaving there that very same day and heading over to the Distilling Company and boy was I happy I did! When I arrived the employees there were very friendly and helpful; it's been awhile since I've visited in establishment where every single employee greets you and offers assistance. Not one person passed us up w/o greeting us! This place is a very clean and family friendly environment! Now, let's talk about the drinks... they are soooo good! So much so that I purchased not only a bottle of their amazing Gluten Free Vodka, but after being offered a sample of their Locally Roasted Cold Brew Coffee Liqueur (to die for) I purchased a bottle of it too! This place is one of Houston's Hidden Gems and I can totally see me spending a lot of Spring/Summer Days here! OH, and the CDC COVID-19 guidelines are in full affect here!!

Lorrie H.

Yelp
Weren't welcomed when we entered. Sat at table. No one came over so we moved to bar. Friendliest person was dishwasher Jose. Gentleman who poured flight answered questions but not much more. Cocktails good - mango frozen with vodka and a Gold Rush. Husband like rye single barrel.

Cora W.

Yelp
I had the espresso martini. While it tastes like coffee, it's a little sweet and has a slight chemical aftertaste. My husband had the 1886 and said it was a little sweet but good flavor profile.

Jonathan L.

Yelp
My wife and I were recently at William Price. We had a great time enjoying the ambiance, comfortable seating, attentive staff, whisky flight, and cocktails. We'll definitely be back!
