The Best Sno-Ball Stands in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"A neighborhood institution that evolved from a corner grocery and post‑WWII furniture store into a dedicated sno-ball stand, it occupies a modest brown-and-yellow building in Carrollton and retains many old traditions. Sno-balls are still served in Chinese take-out containers, and current owners preserve original recipes like made-from-scratch chocolate while adding treats such as strawberry shortcake, bananas Foster, and king cake. The stable flavor list and personalized service let staff identify regulars by their favorite flavors, reinforcing its role as a community hub." - Stephanie Carter

Where to Eat Sno-Balls in New Orleans Right Now

"Set in a particularly adorable section of Uptown, this family-run shop turns out signature flavors like orchid cream vanilla in Chinese food takeout boxes, wrapped in a plastic bag to avoid spillage — great for the kiddos. You pretty much can't go wrong with any flavor at Plum Street. Open 2 to 7 p.m., close to Tulane University." - Beth D'Addono, Eater Staff

Our family absolutely loves Plum Street Snowballs. My husband’s grandparents had their first date here, so it feels very full circle that we now visit with our own family. The owners are incredibly kind and friendly, always making you feel welcome. Our family’s favorite flavors are blackberry cream, strawberry cheesecake, and mint, but you truly can’t go wrong with any of them. We look forward to making many more memories at Plum Street for years to come.

Google
This place was so cute! The prices were fair and the flavors were vast. FYI, there is no indoor seating, it’s more like a window order and sit or go. We got the souvenir cups so we can always remember our trip there, but they do sell them in the to go cartons which is a cute touch. Highly recommend finding and trying this small-town feel, local gem!

Google
I was so excited to try Plum Street only to be sooooo let down. if i’m paying $9.75 my snowball should have some syrup! this thing was dryer than a desert! sure the condensed milk was delicious but that was only .25 worth! for all the hype i hear this was such a bust. i added a photo because i need yall to see the hard ice i was given. my friend asked for light syrup and hers was juicy! bet you can’t even tell i ordered two flavors!

Google
Forget what you know about snowballs – these are otherworldly. The owner's warm and friendly demeanor makes you feel instantly welcome. And the homemade condensed milk? A game-changer! It's pure magic, taking a simple recipe to unbelievable heights. It simply can't be topped.

Google
Very neat place and employees, was given a very generous amount of flavoring on my snow cone which I notice almost is never the case at other snow cone places, the employees are also very nice and welcoming.

Classic local establishment!! A favorite of the neighborhood for 80 years. So many flavors and great service!

Google
DISAPPOINTED TODAY - Hello - As a loyal customer & hospitality worker, I just wanted to let you know that the young lady that was there today around 5pm or so that was filling the cups with ice was not friendly! She had on a pink shirt. But the other 2 ladies that were on the register as well as putting the syrup on were very kind. I understand they were hot and probably frustrated but paying customers should never experience not being treated kindly. We didn’t even get a hello. She just rudely asked us what size. It wasn’t even crowded as normal for her to act that way. Thx for reading but please remind them we are paying customers.

Monique

Google
The last few times I ordered snowballs from Plum Street there was little to NO syrup if I'm paying over $20.00 please put more syrup they have been very stingy and cheap with the sauces and syrup. Do better so yall can have more better reviews I see a lot of people on here are having the same problem that I am having what a waste of money and time. I have been sooooo Disappointed Ew!

Yelp

Yelp
Everyone raves about Plum Street and as a NOLA native, I know great snowballs. Unfortunately, Plum street missed the mark. I prefer a snowy, soft, melt in your mouth ice but theirs is more of a shaved ice feeling. The shards of ice are kinda hard to really enjoy. I tried the banana fosters cream and strawberry cheesecake with condensed milk. I couldn't really distinguish the difference unless physically looking at it, which says a lot. It was very sweet but nothing distinctive about either flavor. My four year old took maybe 3 bites before telling me he was done. Over $10 for two snowballs but definitely not worth it.

Yelp
Best flavors and texture of the ice! The lady was super nice and was worth the drive out of the Quarter. We will be back!
google avatar

Blair D.

Yelp
Disappointed! We booked them over a month in advance for our event, paid our deposit and continued to communicate with them and they were a complete no show for our event. When I called to inquire their whereabouts the person had no idea about the event and the person who took our deposit was "out of town". Awaiting my deposit refund! Never again!

Yelp
I have been going to Plum Street every time I have been in New Orleans since the 6th grade. In my mind New Orleans + Snowballs just go together, and Plum Street is definitely the best! I always get my snowball in a takeout container wrapped in plastic, and I'm convinced it just makes the snowball taste even better! I have tried many flavors but the almond cream and the chocolate remain my favorites. I love the fact that Plum Street is in a residential neighborhood and that locals and school kids wait in line alongside you! Always remember the the line is worth the wait no matter how long!

Yelp
It was around Mardi Gras weekend and everywhere I went to around uptown was closed due to the parades, so I decided to hit up the suburbs. This place was the only place that was opened at the time. It's this little place opened up by this cute elderly couple. I chose wedding cake with condensed milk and king cake with vanilla ice cream and condensed milk. Omg this was what my little heart and palate had dreamt about since the last time I came to Nola. Being a former 504 resident, but now a Dallas suburbanite...I can't get this anywhere except here! The flavors and texture was on point and I can't wait to get another one in the future. Will definitely come back for more and try other flavors. I didn't even have a chance to take pictures because we ate it too quickly.

Yelp
Mixed Feelings!! Although the service is good , the people that work there are friendly, I have to be honest. I have mixed reviews because I've gone once before and tried the Buttered Rum flavor and topped it condensed milk. It was not my favorite flavor and I tried soooo bad to like it but I did not finish it at all. There was an overwhelming artificial butter flavor and aftertaste of something else, but I wouldn't say rum. I also tried the Strawberry Cheesecake also topped w/ condensed milk, because one of the employees recommended it, and I ended up really liking that flavor. If they wanted to really jazz it up, I would add fresh strawberries, cheesecakes filling, and whipped cream. But they are more of a traditional snowball joint. These snowballs were a bit on the dry side for my taste. If I would have had more juice or flavoring added then I would be more satisfied, but even when I let it melt a little, there was not much to sip. Now the second visit took me by surprise. I returned for a piña colada with condensed milk, traditional flavor that I trusted would be delicious. This visit went very well. I got a small pail and really loved it. I took my time to eat it, was able to spoon the ice, and drink the juice. I did not have any recommendations for it at all. My guest ordered the watermelon and when I tried it, I agreed with them, it was more sweet flavor and less watermelon. I love that they provide chairs and a bench to sit down and enjoy your snowball. Also, the fact that they serve them out the window of a house makes me feel more comfortable and almost nostalgic. All in all, I definitely think you should try them. What I like and my opinion, may be the total opposite of yours. This is a staple snowball joint in Nola and I believe everyone should give them a visit. ...but be careful with your flavor picks. They even have some wild ones like pickle juice... I'm returning to try that one too. A great idea would be free tiny samples of the flavors before ordering. Maybe that will prevent anyone from being dissatisfied, unsure, or disposing of any snowballs while also being able to try the large variety of flavors that are offered. I'm sure a limit will be needed but I love the concept of this. Let me know if you all have more questions!!!! KT

Yelp
Kids enjoyed it. Too much sugar for the adults. Nothing special when it comes to shaved ice or snowballs. Literally hole in the wall. Worth a try, but again, nothing special.

Eli Q.

Yelp
Me and my friend went here and it is amazing I got the mango snowball. Would go again.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
This is the best snow ball place I tried in New Orleans. The ice was soft and flaky and the condensed milk was plentiful and delicious. I wish the mango and tiger flavors were stronger and more distinguishable, as they mixed as soon as I got it, but it was still incredibly delicious. It reminded me of a Hawaiian shave ice. Be sure to check the hours because I arrived on a Tuesday evening to get more snow balls thinking they closed at 8pm but they were already closed by 7:45pm. I believe they usually open at 2pm.

Yelp
Hey guys snowballs are great but please and I mean please never never never ever never get there nachos horrible nachos worst nachos I've even had in my entire lifetime stiff and confusing cheese one day from stale nachos & frustrating jalapeño peppers snow balls are great though just avoid purchasing nachos at all cost
google avatar

Montessahall H.

Yelp
It used to be good years ago. Like a lot of places post-pademic it has gone downhill. The flavors are weak, portions smaller and prices higher. No more business from me.

Yelp
snowballs taste amazingggg!! flavors taste so natural! perfect for a hot day catch them white they're open

Yelp
I love this neighborhood snowball stand. I've come here many times and it always hits the spot. They're very friendly folks!

Yelp
Snow cone was not bad. I ordered Peach and Tigers Blood with condensed milk and it was ok. The flavors were not very intense and the ice was not as smooth as others I've tried. We also ordered green apple and pineapple which was ok. Once again ice not as smooth and velvety as other spots. Lastly we tried the strawberry shortcake and my brother in law says it was good. He was the most satisfied. I give them 5 stars for the uniqueness- a snow cone in a Chinese take out box. Now I have to saw. I saw someone else with Strawberry cheesecake and strawberry glaze on top and it looked really good. Even though I gave them 3 stars I would return if I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Great customer service and delicious Snoballs! They ladies were so great at recommending something and it was sooo tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Simple summer sweets. My students and I got to be kids again and slurp on some ol' school snowcones mid-day. It must be awesome to have this lil' joint tucked in your neighborhood. We met some regulars who claimed to come here every day just for something to cool them down. The service was sweet, to say the least. Efficient and masterful with their mixology skills, the servers made us feel that exuberant anticipation and glee that come with watching the snowball be made and tasting the sweet coldness on your tongue. Can't say I'm moving to the "Big Easy" yet, but those snowcones got me thinking about returning to the South.

Yelp
New Orleans Classic! Stopped by with the kids to grab an afternoon snowball. Cute option: you can order your snowball in a Chinese takeout box! They wrap it in a plastic bag for spillage protection. Great idea for kids! Multiple size options and even more flavors!

Yelp
This entrant in to the busy snoball scene has a certain residential charm in its locale; it's a place I'd want to stop after dinner. It's not open terribly late though (a common feature that I find somewhat puzzling), nor is it open during the off-season. In-season, it offers some cheap but tasty flavored ice. I ended up with a mint cream flavor, mildly by surprise. I don't know that I'd pick it over Hansen's, but I do think I'd be back to try more flavors.
google avatar

Ellery D.

Yelp
Favorite snowball place so far! They have a bunch of good sugar free options, and they're only $1.50 for the kiddie cup, about 40 cents cheaper than Sno-la. I tried the ice cream (which tastes like vanilla) and raspberry flavors. Nice employees, too, who will let you taste test if you're not sure about something. I will be a regular.

Yelp
It was 90 degrees today and we were desperately seeking something to help us beat the heat. Once we saw these snoballs on Yelp, we hopped right into a Lyft and jetted on over. Ratings Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste -- There are a TON of flavors offered. I have a pathologic weakness for blue treats so I knew I had to get blue raspberry. I couldn't resist topping my sweet treat with some condensed milk. YUM. My sister was craving something tart so she got grapefruit and pink lemonade. The pink lemonade was more sweet and tart while the grapefruit was slightly bitter, which suggests they use actual grapefruit juice. My friend enjoyed the kiwi even though it didn't taste like kiwi. The texture of the ice is very fine, almost as feathery as Taiwanese shaved ice, but not quite. 1/1 Stars for Value -- The sizes range from kid's cups to large Chinese restaurant-style take-out boxes. We each got a small pail, and it was just enough...even though I could probably have also finished something bigger. I didn't see prices written anywhere (the line suddenly moves very quickly once you get inside), but I think they charge extra for additional flavors and condensed milk. Two small pails with one additional flavor and both with condensed milk was $6.20. Well worth it on a hot day! 1/1 Stars for Customer Service -- This place is run by kids. Very efficient kids. No joke, this was the first time in New Orleans that my food was ready in less than 40 minutes. The first kid asks you what size you want so they can start shaving the ice. Then one of the middle kids asks "who got the next (insert size)" and you tell them what flavors you want before the last kid rings you up. The line goes around the corner, but it moves quick! Your snoball will come with a spoon and a straw (genius!) and if you ordered a pail, it will be wrapped in a plastic bag so you can sip up all the delicious melty bits and save yourself some serious drippage. Bonus star because if I lived in the area, I would be here all the time in the summer. TL;DR -- Classic snoballs, delicious treat on a hot day. Fast service. Try all the flavors and don't forget the condensed milk!

Yelp
My goal is to try all the flavors...so far I've had 6 so I have a long way to go! The plum has been my favorite so far. I like pairing a non-cream with a cream flavor, so when it melts you get a nice blend. The flavors are unique and heavy-handed: sometimes I need a water after because they are less refreshing than sweet. Creative flavors include lemon meringue, toasted marshmallow, and candy apple. I'm craving the cream of orchid and tangerine right now...

Yelp
If you're going to have a Snoball in NOLA, and let's face it - you HAVE to have a Snoball in NOLA at least once a summer because I think it's some sort of law here - then please do yourself a favor and make it a Plum Street Snoball. The prices are excellent, the ice is powdery, and I've loved every flavor I've ever tried. My favorite is their chocolate with sweetened condensed milk. It's rich, sweet, and perfectly chocolatey. And if nectar's your thing, go for it here. Theirs is delicious. Other notable info.: My sister in law swears by their vanilla, but being a total creature of habit, I can't leave without my chocolate. I believe her and am guessing that the vanilla is the bomb. Keep in mind that it's street parking and cash only.
google avatar

Katelynn B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to venture out and try Plum St for the first time. I loved how soft the ice was. It was almost powdery like. My bf got half kiwi/ blue raspberry. I got blackberry with condensed. We both felt the flavor was very mild. Kiwi didn't really taste like kiwi... more like lime? It's hard to exactly say. All of the flavors tasted like a sugar free drink. I'd go back if I was in the area and craving a snowball, but wouldn't go out of my way to come here again.
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
I loved the Snoball from here, I got the Dreamsicle flavor was really good paired with condensed milk topping. I also think it's really great to include a plastic bag with the Snoball seeing that they can get messy Would recommend !
google avatar

Graham B.

Yelp
Great classic NOLA place. I came here as a kid, and I've taken my one year old daughter here.
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
This was my go-to spot for snowballs when I was a student at Tulane! Prices are reasonable and service is fast. Only downside is that they don't accept card for purchases under $5, so be sure to bring cash.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
reasonably priced and hit the spot. After walking around Loyola and Tulane, we decided to walk over to get a snoball. I do prefer shaved snow to shaved ice. It has a softer consistency. While we have shaved snow in CA, it is usually much bigger and meant to share among friends. The individual snoball was refreshing. We have the lemon meringue cream medium for $2.75 and was big enough to share (though I can easily eat the whole thing by myself).
google avatar

Jess C.

Yelp
So far ties with Hanson's. They are two different styles but both my favorites. They are cash only so just be ready for that and enjoy your snowballs! Take out containers are super cute too! Also they have clear flavors for the little ones!
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
Can you believe that I have lived in New Orleans my entire life (9th generation, if you want the facts) and I have never had a Plum Street snowball? I know! It's almost embarrassing, especially considering the fact that Plum Street is one of the more famous stands in town. David and I headed over and it was a little later (around 7), but lucky for us, they were still serving up the sugar. The stand is tucked into the middle of a neighborhood, so you'll miss it if you don't know what you're looking for. I got the strawberry shortcake snowball in a cup and watching them make it was something to behold. They DOUSE this thing in syrup, y'all. They don't hold back on the juice at all! The flavor I chose was super sweet and creamy and I love how fine the ice is. For those of you who are new to snowballs: it's all about the ice. Chunky ice can totally ruin the snowball experience. The snowball I had here was so good that I wanted to go back the next day. It was probably the best "classic" snowball I have had in a long time. Needless to say, this spot is a "must".
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We were told that we needed to try a snowball before we left New Orleans. So I searched and found this place, and they didn't let us down. I had butter rum with sweetened condensed milk, it was a great snowball. Prices were reasonable too.

Stella M.

Yelp
the snowballs here are very good. but, compared to hansens snowballs, the ice is less smooth and more crunchy. i would say they are a close second.
google avatar

Jia B.

Yelp
Delicious snowball spot in uptown New Orleans! It is a quaint little spot that keeps the line moving so you never have to wait long. They also have a wide variety of flavors and sizes. The last time I visited I ordered the Orchid Cream Vanilla snowball, which was refreshing, sweet, and oh so good! I don't usually consider myself a huge snowball fan but this flavor reminded me of ice cream, which was a huge plus! While Plum Street doesn't have the same hype of other New Orleans snowball shops, I highly recommend checking it out if you're in the area! TIP: Google does not have the right hours for Plum Street! Posting the correct hours here so don't be tricked by Google and think that Plum Street isn't open on Saturdays!
google avatar

Stasia C.

Yelp
It's nice to see that at least a few aspects of the city have remained intact since lockdown, and this tops the list. Where else can one order a pickle juice snoball? Friendly staff, classic NOLA feel, and only 2 bucks to cool off with a tasty treat.
google avatar

Alexandria C.

Yelp
Love me some nectar creams with condescended milk and whipped creme anytime I'm in uptown :). I love Plum Street and for a really fair price ya can get a big snowball bowl that while last ya a day it's the best !
google avatar

Nadia W.

Yelp
I tried the Strawberry Shortcake Creme flavor & omg I want to go back very soon! The line moved super quick and my mom received a rose for Mother's Day. Super sweet team.

Yelp
Visited Plum Street Snoballs on April 8th (just this past week) with my son as we celebrated his birthday in New Orleans. It'd been about 3 years since I'd been (covid time included) but we were excited to experience nola and Plum St's one-of-a-kind snowballs as we capped of week of great food and travel. Unfortunately the experience wasn't great at all. I suppose the young lady at the service window was either preoccupied or something because after giving the order 3 times and them forgetting my son's order altogether (we'd been waiting about 20 mins before we spoke up after seeing others who'd ordered after him, receive theirs) when we did receive his order it was incorrect (should've been Praline 'cream' but it appeared and tasted simply like 'brown ice'). The next day we decided to get snowballs somewhere else and had a much better experience. Plum St, I hope this was a 'one-off' and not how you all generally conduct business, however given how dismissive your staff was/is, it doesn't appear as such.
google avatar

Robby S.

Yelp
You gotta try this local mom & pop snowball shop off the beaten track! It will become your new favorite place!
google avatar

Heather H.

Yelp
Love, love this place! Best Snoballs ever! It's a small hole in the wall place that only takes cash which keeps the prices very reasonable. There are so many flavors to choose from that it's hard to make a decision. The line was long but the staff moved fast and we were able to get through the line quickly. When I'm back in New Orleans, that will be my first stop.
google avatar

Alexander W.

Yelp
CASH ONLY SPOT!!! CASH ONLY SPOT!!! CASH ONLY SPOT!!! CASH ONLY SPOT!!! CASH ONLY SPOT!!! I think I fell victim to overhyping! So many people...so many people...told me this is the best of the best snowball stand of New Orleans. My mouth has waited for so long to try this place, because I am a West Bank New Orleanian, and this in the middle of the East Bank. I decided that this time, I definitely was going to make the stop. All in all, this place is just decent. The ice isn't the softest ice I have ever had; it is just merely decent ice. The strawberry flavor is really good, but the grape and Hawaiian punch flavor, just decent! Are you sensing a theme here? I do like the variation of sizes, and the pricing is not that bad overall. I really like just the mere look of having a Chinese food container, what normally the rice comes in, used instead of the traditional cups, to serve you the snowball. Just remember to ask for a plastic bag to put that concoction in because the juice will eventually leak out the bottom...and there is a lot of ice packed in that thing. I believe the bag cost an extra nickel...go ahead and splurge on that eating accessory! They even offer a pail size, which would be a cool family thing to dig into! Remember not to be on your phone or you will be skipped in line. Have an idea of what you want because they zoom through customers. They have to because you are waiting outside to get these beauties! All in all, definitely come here for the experience. You will not be disappointed in that at all. Just know that there are many other snowball stands in New Orleans that can rival and beat these folks. Also remember, this is a CASH ONLY spot!
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
There are many sno ball stands in the city that you can try. I have already reviewed the one that everyone says is the best. However, for me, the best snoball in the city of New Orleans is Plum street. You can order for a cup but where this place stands tall is using a Chinese takeout box for a snoball of your choice. Soo much Snoball can be had when you order the pail. It really is the best way to go if you want a snoball in the city. I love their chocolate syrup!! Soo creamy and just delicious. You can not go wrong when the weather gets hot in this city (all the time...) a snoball to be had is from the best place. Please go to Plum!
google avatar

Jonathan L.

Yelp
HANDS DOWN BEST SNOBALLS IN NOLA! I first had the honor of trying these snoballs at Jazz fest and it was fantastic. Their sweetened condensed milk and syrup ratio is on point. I'm also really particular about my cherry flavor syrup and they have it made perfectly. Their prices are also very fair. Its about 3 dollars for a medium with condensed milk Overall, this place is a must try if you're new to the area. Plum Street (best) then SNOLA then Hansens.
google avatar

Uriia H.

Yelp
Plum street set up shop yesterday for a work event. Staff was friendly and helpful. I tried their ice cream sno ball and it hit the spot on a hot a$$ Monday. Their ice was a tad bit crunchy for my taste but overall it was a good snoball. I would like to try one from their actual location since all flavors were not represented at this pop up location.
google avatar

Thy T.

Yelp
When I first heard of snoball, I was like what? Apparently it's a NOLA version of snow cones. The consistency is between snow cones and shaved snow (the Asian version which is softer). I am particular with these kinds of dessert and I still prefer shaved snow. Nevertheless, it was a fun try. Plum street is located near Tulane campus so it is a perfect afternoon snack for those nearby. The store is small and only a few people can step inside it to order. I had the coconut and strawberry ones. I don't know which one I prefer but they were both good. The small size was actually a little too big and I could have gone with the kid's size. The cups come in a bag which I appreciate as the liquid will start draining into the bag shortly after. I was surprised by the number of people driving their car and eating it at the same time. The menu is pretty extensive so I would recommend looking at their menu beforehand if you don't know what flavour you want. Come check out the place if you're in the area!
google avatar

Christin V.

Yelp
It was the creamiest and softest ice ever!!!! I was surprised by the blue color for my wedding cake snowball but it was DELICIOUS. It's one of my kids' fav places to go for snowball as well. We will be making the 45 min drive again soon for one. PS for Mother's Day they handed out roses to all of the moms. It was such a sweet gesture.
google avatar

Selina I.

Yelp
AHHHHHH!!! King cake flavor??? In July??? YES!!!! Pralines and cream?? Yummmm. Plum street is a teensy tiny slice of heaven. I love their flavors and the Chinese take out pints. It's a great experience. Service is super speedy (probably because they rush you)...

Yelp
Such a fun visit for it being my first time. If you visit New Orleans during the summer months, having a snoball is a MUST! This little stand is situated within a residential neighborhood. Plenty of parking along the street. It's super tiny - only a few people at a time can fit inside the little space. So don't be surprised to see a line if you visit. It's a bit overwhelming when you walk in. I quickly skimmed the neverending flavors listed for something that sounded appealing and went that route. The Strawberry cheesecake did not disappoint- they served the powder fine ice in a Chinese takeout container packed to capacity (placed in a plastic bag for easier consumption) and top with the strawberry cheesecake syrup. Sooo so good and instantly melts in your mouth. Probably one of the cheapest(and fun) dates you can have, too. Most of the folks here were parents bringing their kids after school as well as adults that just wanted a taste of their childhood. There are a few seats outside for your convenience. Also note that this place may have limited hours during the fall/winter months so call/check their social media so you don't make a wasted trip driving out.

Favorite Snoballs in New Orleans! Every flavor is sooo good. A small pail is the perfect sized it's just enough. I love getting the orchid cream and nectar cream. Can't wait to go back when I go to NOLA next year!!!
