How Restaurant Food and Products Took Over Grocery Store Shelves | Eater

"Started by a chef-ally who opened a shop in Sonoma, California, the retailer pioneered aspirational home-kitchen purchases and, by the 1970s with a catalog, helped sell the fantasy of a high-end American kitchen; over decades it worked with chefs to offer usable, 'in-between' products for home cooks—from chef-designed oils to 2011’s Cup4Cup gluten-free flour and bakery mixes—bridging complex restaurant techniques and ingredients to make them accessible." - Naomi Tomky

The Cookware Startups Coming for All-Clad and Le Creuset | Eater

"A California-based cookware retailer founded in the 1950s that runs hands-on training for in-store demonstrators; the narrator worked there as a food demonstrator, learned about items from pepper mills to hand-cut glassware, and served samples of the store’s pumpkin quick bread. New hires received a small stainless-steel butter warmer (retailing at $69.95), which the narrator cherished until it was badly discolored by an overcooked egg; when the issue arose, store staff relayed that the manufacturer’s warranty would not replace a pan for discoloration." - Daniela Galarza

Amazing Staff!!! We love how you are all so classy and friendly. We love the original Williams-Sonoma store in Sonoma Williams-Sonoma's original store, located at 605 Broadway, Sonoma, CA, is an upscale chain store offering high-end cookware, house-label kitchen accessories, and gourmet goods. The store is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day. * History: Chuck Williams opened his first cookware shop in Sonoma, California, in 1956. This marked the beginning of Williams-Sonoma. The store was reopened in 2014 after meticulous restoration, reflecting the enduring legacy of Chuck Williams. * Unique Merchandise: The Sonoma store offers one-of-a-kind merchandise featuring the pineapple, Williams-Sonoma's original logo and a symbol of hospitality. * Modern Innovation: The store is a destination for state-of-the-art culinary essentials from around the globe. Charles Edward "Chuck" Williams (October 2, 1915 – December 5, 2015) was the American founder of Williams-Sonoma. He opened his first cookware shop in Sonoma, California, in 1956, and is credited with playing a major role in introducing French cookware to American kitchens. He remained involved with the company until his death at the age of 100, overseeing merchandise selection and writing cookbooks.

Best Williams-Sonoma I’ve been to! I’m no stranger to this popular brand, but what a treat to be in the OG storefront. Make no mistake, this isn’t your ordinary cookery retail location, though. The residence of the man who made this an international brand is located in the rear of the storefront. How cool (and beautiful)!! Don’t take my word for it, check out the pics! Staff at this location have always gone above and beyond. Highly recommend to anyone in Sonoma.

Google
Williams Sonoma store with some history! They have their regular shop goods and more home items in the back. The new expanded store includes the founder’s original home and some fun history behind it. There’s a gorgeous outdoor seating area that would be lovely for a nice afternoon picnic.

Google
The OG location! Full service store with a beautiful backyard garden that you can rent for events. Back in the day the store used to be really tiny and the rest of building was the Chuck Williams’ house. Now it’s beautifully remodeled and you can shop through all the rooms, even upstairs. If you’re in the area, definitely worth stopping by.

Google
The original Williams-Sonoma! Returning to its root! What an incredibly lovely store. Wonderful welcome by the staff who gave us a museum tour of the store including his private house that he built in the back. Such an amazing place. You have to come and visit and buy! Plan to stay a long time!

Google
A must see for any WS lover. It was so nice to be able to walk through the store/house and see artifacts from the founder.

Google
Apparently the original store location of the famous chain. Props for keeping it updated. The retail chain itself is whatevs, as in it's for high end kitchen ware for people who like to roleplay as a chef.

Google
This is the original store based in Sonoma. They have a small museum in the back and beautiful garden. Worth a visit, staff is incredible friendly and knowledgably too ;)

Yelp
Wow what an incredible experience seeing the first Williams Sonoma storefront. Both staff members who helped us were very friendly and made sure we were able to find all of our kitchen essentials

Yelp
I purchased a paper towel holder on their website that was $54. Since I ordered the wrong item I returned it for a refund and I was charged more than $20 for the return shipping. I haven't purchased anything from Williams-Sonoma in years and when I did I went into the store and never would have expected is outrageous charges for returning an online item. But then with so many stores going out of business I guess you got to make your money back some kind of way.

Yelp
Did you know the very first William Sonoma shop is still in operation in Sonoma, CA on Broadway Street, right on Route 12. It opened in 1956 in his hometown. The shop is filled with merchandise and smaller than most retail locations. So they won't have the full catalog of inventory here. But the shop is way more charming because it's also a museum of sorts to the founder. They kept the bones of the building with the 1950s shop on the first floor and living space on the second floor look. They have a demonstration kitchen on the first floor. Pre COVID years, they hosted cooking events. Merchandise is aptly displayed in the appropriate areas. Bedding and linens in the bedroom, furniture and home decor in the living room... you get the picture. Everything is so beautifully displayed. Spread throughout the shop and particular upstairs are old black n white photos of the founder throughout his life. Luv that. Quite inspirational. WS merchandise is top quality. Yes, items can be pricey. However they do have items and product lines that are more reasonably priced. If you like to cook and entertain, this is a must stop. Staff here are fabulous. I never had any issues. There is a private parking lot in the back off First Street with handicapped spots. To get into the building from the back, they do have an exterior lift. Inside they have an elevator. There is a lovely garden area with outdoor kitchen and dining area in the back yard.

Yelp
Unfortunately for me I decided to purchase an item for Mother's Day 2024 and when I made my order it said the estimated arrival date was May12th, and I was really hoping the item I purchased was going to make in time for Mother's Day and it did not. Then the delivery date was changed to May 13th and the item I purchased online in thier website still had not come in until the next day May 14th. I was out of town and could not pick the item up until the Saturday May 17th and when I did the sales person brought the item and we opened the box to check the item I purchased it was damaged with missing paint. The box had what looks like a knife gouge along the side of the box and the lid had no protection on it where the damaged was found. Then the store proceeded to do a replacement order for me with another estimated date of arrival of June 18 a whole month away. I asked had the store for just an exchange so I wouldn't have to wait a whole month and they brought me another one they had in the back a different color which was fine, but then I had to wait until the order was canceled and rebuy it again online because that was how I bought it the first time. That was to much of hassle for me at this point I definitely will not be purchasing anything from this store ever again. *Key note here: It was not the employees fault and I am sure they were just following store policy. It is the store itself William Somoma for the negative review.

Yelp
Ordered a few items about a month ago. One of the items was not what I ordered. Since then I've spent over 4 hours on the phone with their customer service and have been promised multiple times the replacement will be sent. I've sent back the incorrect item several weeks ago. Have not received any of the emails I was promised or the item. Called customer service again and they have no clue what's happening or where my order is. 0/10 customer experience. Avoid W&S at all costs. Literally everything they sell can be gotten cheaper elsewhere and they will actually send you the items you ordered.

Yelp
Ordered a wreath which has been in proccessing status since the day I ordered it. Called to find out where the product was and you can't talk to anyone execpt the CS agent who answers the phone. I was on the line for an hour waiting for the supervisor to message the agent back about cancelling the order. Agent claimed she was finally going to transfer me and the line went dead after a few minutes. They don't have the product but won't say they don't have it in stock and can't seem to give me any information as the ETA of the product but won't cancel the order. Horrible, Horrible customer service from a ONCE great company.

Yelp
Had such a nice visit to the original Williams Sonoma! The history and merchandise are displayed beautifully. The staff were friendly and kind especially Celeste and Samuel!!

Yelp
Great stock and great service. They had what I was looking for and worked hard to use my old gift cards.

Yelp
Really cool to see the original store from Williams Sonoma. Lots of pictures of the owner and family and the store is in their original house /storefront. Street parking. Lots of staff to answer questions and suggest what to check out (they showed me a stove that's really cool). And for national earth month it's nice to pitch in an extra dollar to support planting a tree at checkout.

Yelp
Stopped by today to replace my Nespresso machine and I was suffering drinking French press all month waiting for a sale. Holly and Julie were both fantastic! They had my machine in stock. I bought a raffle ticket for St Jude - especially love that they partner with such an outstanding charity. Samples of the best peppermint bark ever! Epic customer service and experience. I hope I win the lottery and can outfit my entire home with the furnishings, cookware and linens - lusting after those outdoor rockers! Merry Christmas to all!

Yelp
I will not purchased anything from Williams Sonoma online as they charge a hefty fee for shipping. Returns cannot be made to their brick and mortar stores for a refund and if you do they charge $12.95 shipping. I purchased 3 Staub rectangular baking dishes for $169.99 and found them on other websites for $99.95 after I purchased and WS will not refund the price difference. Between shipping charges to receive your items and shipping charges back, not adjusting a price that is $70 cheaper everywhere else, this is not a company I want to do business with again. Really poor customer service which cost the consumer alot of money which they would not have from other retailers.

Yelp
This is my favorite Williams-Sonoma store; and rightfully so because it's the original, very first one, when and where it all began over 65 years go. It's small, compared to the other Williams-Sonoma stores but there's just something about it that makes it special. It's true this original location doesn't carry everything in it's expensive catalog line. But the store on Broadway has a way of welcoming you in and experiencing Williams-Sonoma like no other. All of the staff and sales reps are outstanding! Excellent customer service! They are always helpful, even the times I wondered in, looking for a gift and in a rush. I quickly learned that being in a rush, especially in a shop like Williams-Sonoma isn't feasible. The high quality of the times, the way things are placed and arrayed, one must take time. As I say, Williams-Sonoma is to be experienced. Don't rush! For years I've seen the Nordic Ware cake pans in the Williams-Sonoma catalogs, especially at holidays. And each time I would ponder "what would it be like to have a piece of cake made with such a luxurious and beautiful pan?" I realize it wasn't just the cake or pans, but just about everything that Williams-Sonoma has to offer. And, any and every holiday seems to shimmer and glow ever so much when Williams-Sonoma puts a holiday table or menu together. The store in Sonoma reflects that and it has a warmth to it. It takes me back to happier days and simpler times when weekends and holidays had families, friends and neighbors gather. These days it's difficult to have the time. One cool aspect to streaming video technology is that there are literally hundreds of cooking and baking shows via The Internet. And, watching the clip of the making of a Williams-Sonoma Bundt Cake recipe with a fancy Nordic Ware cake pan on the W-S website won me over. I went into the shop on Broadway to check out the Nordic Ware live and in person. These pans are worth the fancy price. So well-made! Very sturdy with the intricate patterns and various motifs. I am not a good cook or baker by any stretch. Yet these pans and the special accompanying boxed cake mixes that Williams-Sonoma offers is delicious! I was so impressed and delighted that I returned to the shop again today and bought another pan. And I figured out, that in a way I'm saving $ making my own cake. Because now I don't have to go to Starbucks or Peet's so much to have a scrumptious slice of lemon cake or cinnamon-strudel coffee cake. I can enjoy it fresh baked with my morning coffee in the comfort of my home; especially on chilly weather mornings. And if I do get an invite to a holiday party or celebration, I can bring a cake for dessert. If you're looking for something special and you also would like to experience a bit of Martha Stewart or Julia Child, go to Williams-Sonoma, especially the one in the town of Sonoma, on Broadway not far from the Plaza.

Carole M.

Yelp
Very surprised at the level or lack of customer service. I've been coming to this store for years and I'm afraid it's gone downhill. I purchased the premiere green pans and from the start everything has stuck to them, not good. I called to see if they've had any other complaints or if there's a trick to these pans and the woman said...sorry take it up with Green Pan. Wow...ok. I'll go elsewhere!

Yelp
I could never do Williams S dirty . No way man . I don't know how anyone could . Not saying if u received poor service , that's ok , But , let me say , this shop is an institution, let's lay a little respect down . Not only is it where it all started , it was the beginning of luxurious , beautiful imported items and tools , and much needed accessories for a well stocked kitchen . Nuff said . The staff are fabulous , always , without exception . I have purchased great utility items here , as well as more decorative, fun purchases . Of course the of the stock varies & this is a small store , Other locations are bigger and more inventory, no doubt . But if you are in Sonoma , I say , check it out . Peets coffee is just a stones throw away . They did have cooking classes , I have not attended , but I have noticed them & it looks so cool & fun . I read an amazing essay about Williams Sonoma , trying to remember it . So rich & moving . I have to google it . Today , new SIP is in effect , not for Sonoma County & I think they could use support , totally . Restaurants are open , outdoors , and so important to support our bounty of amazing shopkeepers , even ones that are a chain . They won't survive w out us ! I see you Williams Sonoma , and I like it all ! https://www.foodandwine.com/lifestyle/williams-sonoma-essay Love this ! Lovely writing & heartwarming .

Yelp
This is the original William Sonoma store. Smaller than most for merchandise but lots of character! The back and upstairs room were setup like a model house so you could see the setup of various pieces of furniture or accessories. Very cute store. You can also buy a few items like a tote bag, that can only be found at this store.

Yelp
I do not recommend this store as I explained and my disappointment, and on their return policy, after my couple of years of doing business with them in the amount that I've spent, and they are treating me in the manner in which they did, in addition to selling me something That was past sell by date.......

Elaine C J.

Yelp
We went to Wms-Sonoma today in Corte Madera to return a holiday gift. In spite of the dazzlingly high prices, we were able to find something to exchange for the item we were returning. When the transaction was complete, the store owed us $5.45. Williams-Sonoma was unable to issue us a gift card in that small amount, and more surprising, were unable to give us cash. I find it outrageous that this could happen in today's digital world. Why couldn't their computer system generate a gift card? Why couldn't they hand us the change we were due? I will think hard before I go there for anything.

Bill S.

Yelp
Horrible, will never return.....My wife and I, senior citizens - well groomed, dressed, masked - stopped in this last Friday to pick up a few things (Up until now we always tried to support the local Williams-Sonoma). From the moment we entered we were made to feel like criminals.......We were followed, or should I say stalked, everywhere we went in the store. I would purposely walk ten feet then change direction, and sure enough, the clerk would do likewise, always staying within 5-7 feet of me or my wife. When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told he was not available, but that I could wait 10-15 minutes until he was. No thank you. My wife and I can not remember EVER feeling this way when shopping anywhere, and hopefully we never do again.

Yelp
Went to the actual museum where William lived with his mom in Sonoma. So cool. I could go broke in WS.

Lina J.

Yelp
The terrible rating isn't about the merch. This is for my online ordering experience. I accidentally picked the wrong color on a gift and there was no way to make the adjustment to my order. No link, no button, not even a way to email or chat. And I couldn't cancel it and then reorder. With nowhere else to turn, I finally called the customer service number. I waited for about 30 for minutes for someone to pick up and then was cut off. I hope the gift recipient likes yellow. Same color as my one-star review.

Yelp
My wife and I always stop in here when in Sonoma. Just down the street from the Town Plaza, street parking is usually not an issue. The store itself is not the largest W-S around but it is crammed with housewares, foods and it has a culinary kitchen where food preparation and cooking classes are held. What sets this store apart from other W-S stores is the service. DW purchased an item at the Corte Madera store but they did not have a gift box for it. My wife took it into the Sonoma store asking for a box. Not only was the box received but the staff took the time to gift wrap the item with secure packing makeing it fully ready to ship. Always great customer service here. Is W-S more expensive than other similar stores... yes but the quality is there and they stand behind everything they sell. Oh and for me there is always free goodies to eat and drink while waiting for my better half to finish shopping :).

Yelp
I came into the store today to return something I bought online. The gentleman working was the kindest and most helpful person. He processed my return and I picked out another item and he made it seamless. Wonderful customer service!

Yelp
Beyond irritated with this outfit. In September, I ordered a set of kitchen scissors and a spreader. Decided to go back and order a couple more sets for friends. Took forever and none of the sets came and I had received no emails. I called WS and was told that they had the wrong email address, which was supposedly corrected during the order call. I was also told that one of the orders had shipped on Oct. 10 and would be here Oct. 15. On the 16th I called and was told all orders were backordered. So, that wasn't noted in the online listing, and I was given 2 stories. My impression, nobody really knows what's going there. As of today, the second order has arrived, I'm still waiting for the order placed on Sept. 20th. Only saving grace was free S&H. In the meantime, I foolishly placed another order. During that call, was informed that my email address was incorrect, again/still. I should have just stopped there, but foolishly placed another order. That order, 2 sets of the "beach house" guest set and 3 bottles of the "bergamot grove" liquid hand soap have arrived. Although I paid for shipping and handling, not one piece of crumpled paper or bubble wrap in the box. NOTHING. Every item in the sets, including the candles in glass, had come out of their own box and were rattling around in the packing box. One of the pumps on the liquid hand soap had broken, and I found the piece of plastic in the packing box, so it wasn't packed broken. That pump still works, but the push part of the pump is now a razor sharp, plastic shard. I'm trying to think of what could convince me to ever buy anything from WS again. Coming up blank.

Yelp
If you're familiar with the Williams-Sonoma local big outlets such as Union Square - SF or even the Corte Madera shopping mall, this little format store will seem cute but have a much smaller inventory on display. I've purchased several items at the larger stores, so I do appreciate Williams-Sonoma selection of higher quality goods. But if I'm in Sonoma (12 miles from my house - up the Sonoma Valley) and in search of kitchenware, I'll probably buy it at Sign on the Bear on the town square.
google avatar

Chrysanthemum A.

Yelp
Williams-Sonoma did indeed get its name from the town of Sonoma, where founder Chuck Williams started it. It's the smallest&most charming in the chain (compared to the enormous one at the Mashpee Commons) It duplicates a house, complete with a charming backyard. It feels very homey. They have dream kitchens. Their replica bathroom looks good enough to use. They have a great selection of kitchen implements and cooking ingredients. They're now collaborating with country singer Trisha Yearwood, carrying her biscuit mixes (but they don't have tortellini that her husband Garth Brooks likes putting in his breakfast bowl) A fun place, a short walk from the Plaza.

Yelp
If you like to window shop or by good high and stuff this is the place to come Fun story to visit a beautiful home to look around in can't leave without purchasing something

Yelp
We were driving by and noticed the store so did a u turn around to go check it out and am glad we did. This was the 1st and original store as the helpful male employee told us. The black and white checkered floor tiles was the front of the store. Chuck Williams was a contractor and lived in the house with his mom. You can see the rest of the cute house and go bump the stairs. Was told his bedroom was in the back. It's all converted to a store now where they sell furniture for WS. They sold out on a lot of Xmas food items and then got in another shipment. I was able to pick up some of my favs. Small tin of choc peppermint bark only $7, usually $28. Jar of mulling spices, usually sold out and canister mocha hot choc for $7, usually $20. Their peppermint hot choc is my fav but I still have lots at home but wanted to try the mocha. The female employees not as friendly. Go see the man. Very cool to see WS home, like going in a museum
google avatar

Yelp
Any chef wether novice to professional would enjoy a trip to this gem of history. Treat yourself to Chuck Williams legacy with pleasing and delightful surprises with every step . Chuck Williams a man with the most exquisite attention to detail!

Yelp
So much fun to visit/shop at the very first Williams-Sonoma. The added bonus was having Christina help me with a friend's wedding registry. Christina was not only professional and knowledgeable but she was EXTREMELY patient while I was trying to decide which item to purchase. I loved her friendly and outgoing personality. She really made the shopping experience a lot enjoyable. Thanks again Christina - you're the best!!

Katherine F.

Yelp
I just bought a pepper grinder from Williams Sonoma in Fresno. The lady who "helped" me was difficult. I insisted on her showing me the different versions ~ which she reluctantly did, but without passion or even the slightest bit of interest. I ended up buying one, in spite of her lack of enthusiasm. She was having conversations with other employees the entire time she was "helping" me. A very poor sales clerk, for sure.

Terry H.

Yelp
I had never been to a Williams Sonoma and received a gift certificate so thought I'd check out the closest store. Sonoma Ca. My husband and I walked in, there was an associate at the register. There were no other clients. We were looking to update kitchen appliances, there about 5 minutes and another associate and client came in. Client asked for an associate, not there and left. Now we're 10 minutes into looking and still not greeted or asked if we needed any assistance by either sales associate. We left. We will not be returning to Williams Sonoma.

Tom P.

Yelp
Ordered a small item (canning funnel) as it indicated in stock. A month later I still had not received. Logged in and order indicated back ordered. Online the order indicated "cannot be cancelled". I sent emails to customer service informing to cancel the order and I ordered elsewhere (received in 2 days). A week later Williams Sonoma replied saying it was currently being packed and cannot be cancelled. Seriously? It was eventually shipped. Have no use for it.

Yelp
Reopened at the original Williams-Sonoma site, this store has bakeware, cookware, glassware, flatware, stemware, dinnerware and giftware, and all the items you'd expect to find at Williams-Sonoma, but also historical photos, news clippings, and a really cool "houseful of wonderful items". You have to check it out; you will be glad you did.

Yelp
This original store of Williams-Sonoma is worth a trip! It's so beautiful, fresh, and clean. The staff is very friendly and willing to help you with any home suggestions! I loved the displays all over- including the backyard!

M C.

Yelp
Every time we visit Sonoma, which is once or twice a year, I HAVE to visit the original WS store. It has always charmed me with its cute downstairs culinary section, and the beautifully decorated and inspirational living spaces. I was looking forward to seeing the shop during this holiday season, but was very disappointed at the lackluster appearance of the furniture selection and decor in the back living area and upstairs. The store obviously had the best interior decorators for its grand opening, but is now is not getting the top tier attention it deserves to showcase WS Home merchandise, which is always beautiful and high quality.
google avatar

Jase M.

Yelp
I have always despised the fact that Sonoma County didn't have a Williams-Sonoma, but I'm so thrilled that has finally changed. I am impressed with the size and quality of this location. Also the staff is really friendly and helpful. Welcome home Williams-Sonoma!

Yelp
The customer service seems lacking. Very slow day, no one else in the shop, out of three women working not one glanced up or acknowledged me. Middle aged women not helping middle aged women. Very peculiar. I left with my list and went across the plaza.

Yelp
ordered all-clad d5 3qt saucepan on dec 5,now 11 days later,it still has not shipped, shows still being processed,no answers why from customer service,....refund time

Yelp
My girlfriend and I visited because it's the "original" Williams Sonoma. Inside, it's a pretty typical WS store but the backyard was what was coolest to me. The stone fence, garden, and use of space shows why williams-sonoma became so popular. Inside, they were cooking hot apple cider and chicken, which made the space smell really good. The employees were attentive, helpful, and knowledgeable.

Russ F.

Yelp
Tried to Order a mixer online and they canceled the order without cause or notice. NOT TO BE TRUSTED!!!

Megan M.

Yelp
Oh my was this a gorgeous store. I had to go to Williams Sonoma in Sonoma. From what they tell me the checkerboard floor on the left when you enter was part of the original store. Great selection, and looks like cooking classes here would be incredible. The living room and upstairs bedroom are beautifully appointed with the right mix of Williams-Sonoma items and antiques. The employees seemed helpful and cheery.

Cher G.

Yelp
Re: Online orders I placed an order for Christmas 14 BUSINESS days in advance & given expected delivery of 12/14; but was informed on 12/22 that it just shipped by 3-Day shipping. When contacted they said they were sorry but they just got backed up. While I do like their in-store merchandise (have shopped there for years), I would never order gifts from them again (especially at a busy time of year), as they can't seem to 'deliver' on their commitments.

Peter S.

Yelp
Very disappointed with customer service. We were ignored by the clerks who needed to complete what appeared to be a private conversation. When we checked out, we were treated very abrupt.
google avatar

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Wow! Great place to browse. Unusual set up for a Williams- Sonoma, which makes it a worthwhile stop (I probably wouldn't write a review if it wasn't unique). The store is in a house structure and the back is set up like an actual house. Beautiful seasonal decorations.

Yelp
I love the store and all the products they offer. As a local resident who lives 1 block away, I like coming in and seeing if a product that is advertised online and on sale available in store. My experience today was a huge disappointment. I found the exact same product advertised (same dimensions) but the manager, she wouldn't honor the sale price advertised. Online ad states sale price for in store purchase or online ordering. I must say, the salesman who also was working behind the counter in the kitchen was very nice and helpful. He was going to honor the sale price, he just needed the approval from the manager. Her brash attitude was disturbing. Her remark to the exact same product was that the one online was last years model. The in store product i wanted to purchase was exactly the same, it was also on sale at 20% off but the email add stated 40% off. Very disappointed in the service provided by the manager. I also contacted the customer service center and I will update this review when I hear from them.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I hardly ever leave reviews for negative encounters. I grew up in Sonoma. Born and raised. My boyfriend loveeees cooking and so he also loves Williams Sonoma. Being that Christmas is right around the corner, I decided to stop in on my lunch for some last minute gifts for him. I was browsing around and a lady who was behind a counter (I'm assuming an employee) made eye contact with me, therefore I smiled. What did she do? She looked me up and down and looked past me. Guess who's not spending money here? Me! Didn't realize there was a dress code to enter your store. Mind you I work in an OFFICE, where we have a relaxed dress attire but not "messy" or unrepresentable AT ALL. My boyfriend and I often go to the one in Novato (where sometimes it's expected to have snooty distasteful encounters) and they actually greet you like you're a visible human. So, no thanks, for me. I'll pass today and forever.

Yelp
I always thought of Williams-Sonoma as a high end store and it might still be so if you purchase directly at the store but my experience online was very disappointing. I bought three items last Christmas and returned two of them, over a month after sending the items back no refund has been issued. Returning the items was also quite an adventure. I decided to return a ceramic bowl that got broken to my house because it was sent with no protecting rapping and a basket that was presented in the online photo with a liner that was not included in the package. I decided to buy the basket because of the liner and whether it is true, as I realized later, that the description stated: "Easter Willow Basquet without liner" I felt mislead because of the photo. I believe I should be able to make a decision on whether to buy an item based on what I see as much as what I read. For sure, I will not buy online at this store again.

Yelp
Let your inner chef be delighted by visiting the re-opened original location of Chuck Williams Sonoma. For those of us who love, appreciate and can properly employ everything from copper cookware to a duck press, enjoy a light pilgrimage to one of the places where the idea of good tasting food at home originated. Along with Julia Child (and her ridiculous TV personality), Chuck Williams has to be credited with inspiring people to actually make decent tasting food at home. For all of us who grew up eating steamed (instead of roasted) vegetables and can't for the life of us figure out why we hated them so much as children only to love them as adults, again thank Chuck Williams. From technique inspired cooking classes to carrying "cook's tools" for any dish, this new original is worth a day trip. Parking is a breeze as their is a hidden lot behind the store. Be sure to pick up one of their exclusive canvas bags with the old logo on them!

Yelp
Not sure I will ever shop here again! Location - Beverly Hills, but ALL locations have a problem. What a nightmare trying to return bridal registry gifts...Grade=F- ! First, duplicate gifts were purchased because registry didn't update quickly enough. But the return process was a nightmare! My new daughter-in-law spent over 4 hours in two separate trips to return items from her on-line registry. Most items returned that shouldn't have been purchased in the first place! All items had store tags and bar codes, yet each item had to be 'looked up' and noted on the bridal registry to receive in-store credit. Each credit (yes-separate cards) to be mailed to the registry mailing address...not even where new bride is now living!! If this wasn't bad enough...someone made a huge mistake and processed all the returns back to EACH PURCHASER!! Because of the brides patience and a little help from a sympathetic employee the next day and another 1.5 hour phone call (this person went to the mail room and was able to stop the mailing of all of these returns and in-store credits to the gift giver!) problem averted! This would have been a disaster and terribly embarrassing for the newlyweds . Unbelievable that a national/global retail store couldn't just scan the items to be returned and hand a store credit to the bride immediately! What a missed opportunity to increase sales!!! How many of us have had a $200 store credit but usually ended up spending $250 or $300? This is the most ridiculous return process I have ever witnessed! I will think twice before I buy another gift from this store chain again. And I highly doubt if my daughter will register here when she is ready!
