Wilson's Secret Sauce - Review - Upper Darby - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Based on the crowded dining room and patio, meat lovers of the Main Line love Wilson’s Secret Sauce. The Upper Darby spot has all the signatures of a BBQ place: a pig in a chef’s hat is on the logo, and the scent of sizzling meat hits you as soon as you walk in the door. But while the aesthetic is certainly on point, the food can be hit or miss. We opt for the brisket, which is smoky bliss, and the don’t-leave-anything-on-the-bone ribs. Unfortunately, the grilled chicken is more sauteed, and the gigantic side dishes are similarly meh. Still, it’s an affordable option for a group meal when all you want is beefy meat and crispy onion rings (platters are $25). video credit: CANDIS R. MCLEAN photo credit: CANDIS R. We decided to take a trip to try this cute spot for lunch. So glad we did! The food was sooo good. The brisket was tender and juicy. The Mac n cheese was perfect. The cornbread was delicious & we loved the onion rings. The place is so cute inside. Very clean & the staff very friendly. We had the pleasure to meet Steve! Very friendly genuine person. We will definitely be there often. Well worth the drive. Best barbecue we have had.

Google
The ribs were sooo delicious and tender I most definitely will be back for the ribs. Now the sides collard greens had a good flavor and nice kick of spice will get again but the Mac n cheese it just didn’t have and salt or seasoning it just tasted bland. Last but definitely not least The sweet potato cornbread with with the glaze or whatever goes on it really good

I had a very enjoyable stay at Wilson's Secret Sauce. It was my first time there, and I was there on Sunday 7/20 near the end of the evening. I got the brisket platter with standard corn bread, mac & cheese, and the grilled squash & zucchini. It took a reasonable amount of time to come out, and the portions were generous; appropriate to the cost. Most of it tasted excellent - the corn bread was the perfect texture and flavor with the butter, and the zucchini and squash were cooked appropriately without being overseasoned. The brisket itself had a nicely complex, smoky flavor and excellent texture. The house sauce was very tasty and nicely balanced being sweet and zesty, so it complemented the brisket's smokiness well without having to smother it. Unfortunately, the mac & cheese was very bland, nearly flavorless. The panko crumbs on top seemed stale, being hard but lacking any actual crunch. There was enough food that I didn't go hungry, but it would have been nice for the server to check on me (there were 3-4 other tables at the time, with seemingly two servers) to see if I was enjoying everything. I demolished everything and left the large pile of mac & cheese sitting there, begging to be asked why it wasn't being eaten. When I asked for the check, the server asked me if I'd like a to go box for the mac & cheese, so I let her know that I wouldn't, as I didn't like the mac & cheese at all. I was hoping for an opportunity to provide specific feedback, as I'd cleaned the plate of everything else, showing that I wasn't just being a hater. Unfortunately, there was no curiosity about why I didn't like it, so I wasn't able to provide the feedback that I have to include here instead. I'd have given 5-stars if the service had been a bit more responsive and allowed me to give specific feedback on the item that I didn't like. I don't expect to like everything, so I can give a pass on a single disappointment when everything else was so good. However, the disinterest in that miss was itself another miss, so... here we are. Definitely check this place out, plenty of good options to choose from, just avoid the mac & cheese, as it doesn't live up to its name.

My husband and I came on Saturday with our friend to check this place out. I don’t even know where to start: the food was PHENOMENAL, the atmosphere was great, everyone was so friendly. I had the pulled pork (SO JUICY and didn’t need any sauce) with grilled asparagus, squash, and zucchini. The owner was the kindest guy ever, I told him I like to bake and he wants to bring in my stuff. We will definitely be back here!

Google
Great food and good size portions. The cornbread is to die for! I had the blueberry cornbread and it's my favorite. My kid prefers the sweet potato cornbread. The butter is in the shape of a pigs head! The desserts were awesome, too!

Google
Wilson’s is undergoing some menu changes, planning to go back and experience more in the future. Corn nuggets were delicious unfortunately all I could stomach being sick. I tried the cornbread too, definitely my favorite part it was super moist! My boyfriend enjoyed the ribs and fries. He didn’t like the Mac and cheese it had too much garlic for my liking.

Google
It was a early afternoon lunch for my wife and I as we had business in the area and we decided on Wilson's and what a surprise right from the start the location was great the inside decor was exceptionally really nice clean and fitting for a barbecue restaurant the atmosphere and service was great as well a big shout out and thanks to Kelly our server who was more than gracious in making sure we were taking care of as for the food I hand the brisket cheese steak I highly recomened trying its a winner ! My wife had the brisket tacos she loved them both were coupled with the secret barbecue sauce which is a standout we had two orders of wings and fried pickles for our appetizers both had great flavor and were well made some of the best that I've had any were .. Google
Listen, just go to mission BBQ. The brisket zero flavor, MAC zero flavor. If you just want meat and things with zero flavor, come here for sure. If you don’t know what flavor is come here you’ll feel at home. Good meat, good pasta, flavor non existent. I never ate brisket and tasted nothing same with Mac. I had to take a covid test to ensure it wasn’t my taste buds.

Yelp
Always a treat to go to Wilsons. Love the people, the ambience, and of course the food!!! No matter what I get it's delicious, good portions, and great selections. I also learned that this family oriented business feeds the homeless in Kensington and is involved in many community events. I support businesses that give back!!! Good luck to all of you

Yelp
I've driven by this place so many times in the past. After seeing their episode air on Gordon Ramsay's show Secret Service, I knew I had to try it once and for all. I met some friends for lunch on a Saturday. It wasn't as busy as I would have expected, but there were a few tables taken. The decor is awesome. Kelly, one of the owners, took our order. She was very nice and the perfect amount of attentive so my friends and I could catch up. We all ordered something different: brisket platter, pulled pork platter, and the Pineapple Expression sandwich. I had the brisket and it was everything I hoped it would be. Juicy, good flavor, ample portion. The fatty parts so good! Bbq sauce was not even needed. The corn bread was delicious too. The butter on top was in the shape of a pigs face. I thought that was a really cute touch. I wasn't the biggest fan of the potato salad, it was too saucey, but it wasn't bad. I tried my friends grilled squash/zucchini. Amazing! Really nice char and flavor. I tried my other friends mac n' cheese. Really good! I'll definitely be getting it next time. I was eyeing the brisket cheesesteak, corn nuggets, and fried pickles (among other items) on the menu too. Steve, the owner and head chef, came out to greet the tables. Such a nice guy and easy to talk to. I hope good things happen for Wilson's! Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place after seeing it on TV, but unfortunately, my experience didn't live up to the hype. I placed a phone order and the older woman who answered seemed overwhelmed. She said my order would be ready in 10 minutes -- I told her I wouldn't arrive for 30, and she said "OK" and hung up. Later, I called back to add smoked turkey, and a different woman told me my order had been canceled because I wasn't coming right away. When I asked why no one told me, she claimed I had hung up before they could -- which wasn't true. Despite the confusion, I still placed an order for: * Brisket sandwich * Smoked turkey * Mac and cheese * Potato salad When I arrived, Alanna at the counter was very sweet and polite. She let me know it wasn't ready yet and asked me to wait a few minutes, which was totally fine. Once I got home, the presentation was on point -- everything looked great. But unfortunately, the food didn't deliver: * The **brisket sandwich** had jalapeños (was only told it had peppers -- I'm not a fan of jalapeños), and it came on a plain bun with no sauce on it (though they did include BBQ on the side). * The **mac and cheese** was warm but lacked any real flavor. * The **smoked turkey** was well-seasoned but very dry. * The **potato salad** was bland. I spent $63.80 and really wanted to love it, but the food just wasn't worth it for me. Between the phone order confusion and the underwhelming flavor, I won't be returning.

Yelp
Everything went well. The service was friendly and attentive. The whole restaurant is neat, clean, and well designed. We ordered brisket platters and the food was excellent. We are going to put this place on our list of favorite eating establishments. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Yelp
Wanted to stop in after their recent redo. I have not been in for a while. Their new look is really cool. Same friendly service that I remembered. My order was taken and prepared for take out promptly. Friends of mine were having lunch and offered me some of their pork belly which was delicious. My take out of a brisket sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich were also fantastic. They were full of tender and flavorful meat. Had our sauce on the side. Keep up the good work.

Phil D.

Yelp
Best baked beans I have ever had. The collar greens were spicy which I loved. A Havertown favorite spot for sure. Service was great. Interior looks amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was really tasty. I enjoyed the Brunswick stew the best. It was even better than when I had in low country Ga where it originated. Our cashier was nice enough since we ordered to go and it was our first time. The restaurant was really cute as well with the Pig decor we didn't realize it was a sit down restaurant. I plan to eat in one day. The deserts were good as well a little pricy but tasty.

Lasheenam M.

Yelp
Very yummy . The esthetic down to the customer service will have me back in no time. Thankyou it was a pleasure.
google avatar

JoAnn M.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Love their brisket. Always try to get the platters but can't finish because it's so filling.
google avatar

Benjamin R.

Yelp
The beans and collard greens were delicious, but there are better ribs at La Cabra and Sophie's (these are a bit tough and rubbery) and the chicken was just bad. I likely won't be coming back here.
google avatar

Cheryl W.

Yelp
Delicious St Louis rib platter with nice sized portions. Priced correctly. Good service and nice atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I went with a group of friends last night, and ordered the brisket platter. It was the most amazing brisket I've ever had, tender and absolutely delicious. My husband ordered the pulled pork and said it was wonderful! The owner and Chef came out and greeted all the tables. Both he and his wife were very warm and welcoming. I loved the decorating and colors that they used. We will definitely be back!

Minh L.

Yelp
Our service was nice and the food was pretty decent! You have to try the blueberry cornbread!!! It was moist and not too dry! I also had their tea and that was also pretty good!

Louise B.

Yelp
I had the pulled pork sandwich as on the menu... no changes... it was perfect! The meat was melt in your mouth tender and full of flavor. The bun was soft, fluffy and disappeared with all the flavor in the sandwich. The onion rings are exactly how I like them... crispy with a light batter! The service was great! The food came out very quickly.... I will be back!

Milton R.

Yelp
I went with a group of friends and ordered the brisket platter. It was the best brisket I've ever had, tender, plentiful and delicious. My sister ordered the pulled pork and it was great too!

Elena P.

Yelp
I stopped by Wilson's to pick up lunch on my way home from work, and the brisket tacos were delicious. The portion size was good, and all the ingredients were fresh. Loved the guacamole and pickled onions on the taco! I didn't have to wait long for my food to be prepared, and the woman who waited on me was friendly, and she addressed me by name. (I had given her my name when I ordered, but I thought it was great that she mentioned my name while I was ordering and paying for my food.) The makeover of the restaurant looks great! Head over to Wilson's if you want to experience great barbecue!

Yelp
Wilson's is only getting 3* from me. I wish I could give more but I simply cannot. Let's start with the good... - The service was great. I don't know the name of the individual working the counter and also running orders of food, but she deserves a raise and a medal. Crushed it. - The sides were really good. I loved the mac & cheese. Quite peppery. The baked beans also had a little heat, which I appreciated. The not so good... - Kind of expensive for what you get, IMO. - The cornbread, despite asking for 'regular' instead of 'sweet' was still too sweet. I like cornbread with absolutely no sugar whatsoever, but this was not that. - I'm not one to complain about comfort and ambiance usually, but man that AC was cranking and blowing right on me. The air was so strong that the curtains were moving and it blew my napkin off the table a couple of times. The really not so good... - The pulled pork was dry and bland. I posted a couple of pictures. I don't see any smoke ring or moisture on this pork. It was kinda bad. I had to drown it in the BBQ sauce (which I really liked, btw) to make it tolerable. If I come back, I will not be getting the pulled pork. I'll check out the brisket next time.

Yelp
A wonderful bbq place where the owners and staff care about the quality of their food. We recently used them to cater a large party, and they came through. Everyone loved it. I cannot recommend the brisket, Cole slaw and Mac and cheese enough. Spicy bbq sauce is impressive!

Patti T.

Yelp
So today wanted to order the brisket cheesesteak, which is always a winner. But ordering a side of fries? $6.99? Deal breaker.
google avatar

Luisa R.

Yelp
Great BBQ!!! Food is delicious! Something for everyone! Casual friendly atmosphere. Pleasantly surprised to see that they cater and do events! Overall great experience!!
google avatar

Jaide T.

Yelp
When I typed in "vegan places near me", I did not expect to see a BBQ spot pop up! I was hype!!! Make sure you come here HUNGRY! The portion sizes are huuuge but I'm not complaining (I can't wait to eat my leftovers). The platters come with two delicious sides and that delicious cornbread. My family and I definitely had the itis after leaving lol. Shoutout to our waitress, Amy for being patient with us. We had a long day before coming here and our brains were not all the way lol. Amy was kind and attentive. A couple of things rubbed me the wrong way. The number of signs of the do's & don'ts. The LONG script at the table. I was thankful that the woman in charge (I guess) told us about it. Mainly about price changes, 20% gratuity automatically added, and idk what else because I zoned out. However, I was not pleased with how she treated the new employee. The man who sat us down was new and we could tell he was nervous which is completely understandable. Before we were seated, he was putting our number in the computer and the woman in "charge" said, "what are you doing?" "Well, why are you on this part?" He's new and in training, meaning it would have been kind to teach where he needs to check us in on the computer. With all of this said, I would 100% come back for the food, and it's BYOB!

Yelp
Very good food and service. Will definitely be back. Enjoyed our order of pork and brisket.

Yelp
Having visited the South each year for a few years now, I have found some very good traditional BBQ places, so that's my bar for comparison. These guys are pretty strong but 3.5 stars compared to my southern eats spots (round to 4). The prices are high. The portions are okay. The taste is good. I felt a need for salt on a lot. I didn't need sauce, though, because meat flavors were good enough to stand alone. It was decent and worthy for good local BBQ.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
I was hungry... couldn't decide between a cheesesteak or lobster. Then I came across what's called "The Seabrisket", winner of "Best of Philly's Surf and Turf 2022" stuffed with smoked brisket topped off with lobster meat and then cooper sharp cheese. Oh my madness, it hit all the spots, definitely worth a try
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Due to the distance, it wasn't practical for me to go pick up the BBQ sauce you offered. However, due to your attempt to remedy the situation, I decided to give your business another try. I was pleased that my order was totally correct and the BBQ sauce was excellent! My dad was a small business owner and he always said, "It takes years to grow customer loyalty but it can take less than 5 minutes to lose it!" I appreciate your professionalism.
google avatar

Marlene F.

Yelp
I have been meaning to try this place since I drive by it everyday a few times. I finally made it in for take out. The place was quite busy at 3 ish pm and it smelled amazing so I was excited. Nice staff and my order was taken quickly and the wait was about 15 minutes. I really enjoyed everything with the exception of the barbecue sauce. Glad they out that on the side. It just had a weird after taste. I'm used to BBQ Spots having some sauce choices, which I wished they had here and hopefully they will. Ya know like cortina style, a mustard style, a spicier option, just a suggestion from a new customer that will for sure veo going back again to try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Had a good experience at Wilson's. I wasn't a huge fan of the buffalo cauliflower app but the cheesesteak and burger were really solid - when I'm in town, I'd come back. Service was great and the owner cane out to chat/ask us how everything was which was really nice - he genuinely cares about his food and customers

Marie W.

Yelp
Two thumbs up! The food here is amazing! Try the Sea Brisket and the corn nuggets! The owners go above and beyond and they know how to do BBq the right way! You will not be disappointed!
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
The barbecue here is Texan-approved by my fiancé! We come here often for the delicious bbq, but this was our first time trying the wings. Needless to say, they are going to be a necessity for every visit now!
google avatar

Antoinette B.

Yelp
Great BBQ, one of the very best in the try state area; if you haven't yet tried them, do so immediately! Ribs and brisket are both outstanding!

Bruster R.

Yelp
The barbecue was excellent as usual, but the day became even more excellent as the best Santa arrived. He was very patient with our 11 month old granddaughter, making her first visit with Santa a vey positive experience.

Kim F.

Yelp
We love Wilson's! They are a go to for us! We ordered through DoorDash today and unfortunately two of our items were missing. Without even calling to let them know, an awesome friendly girl from Wilson's called me directly to let me know it was their mistake and they would make it right by delivering the missing items and a free dessert for the inconvenience. Totally unexpected. I did receive a refund through DoorDash but Wilson's insisted we receive our missing items! One being a kids meal. I now have one happy kid. It is much appreciated!! Top notch costumer service!
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Service was great and pretty fast. Staff is really nice and the inside is a nice relaxed looking place. Looks pretty clean which is always a big plus for me! Now let's get down to bidnes about this food lol! The greens were surprisingly good not to salty, nicely seasoned! The brisket was perfecto! Perfectly seasoned as well and was really tender, sauce was delicious as well. I wasn't a big fan of the sweet potatoes,I don't like them dry but I felt like they could have been a bit sweeter.

Jacqueline W.

Yelp
Every was great at this restaurant from the food to the service. The pork and the Corn on the Cob bites were my favorite

Steward O.

Yelp
Delicious! We used them for a block party and everything was delicious, highly recommend
google avatar

Ian S.

Yelp
For some reason Yelp put down the wrong review for Wilson's. I've ordered Wilson's a few times since 2020 and I will say their Brisket and chicken offerings are absolutely delicious and are probably one of the best BBQ spots in the Upper Darby area.
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
Best barbecue in Delco. I have had almost everything on the menu. When he comes up with something new I have to try it. The SeaBrisket has to be the best surf and turf around.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Called for Takeout for the Eagles Game. Told us 25 minutes to pick up. Ordered the Smoked Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese, and Loaded Brisket Egg Rolls for the appetizers. Which also came with fries. Both were spectacular. Our main meal was a rack of ribs, we asked for them cut. They were so tender and also delicious. We know know that next time we can order a 1/2 rack as we had too much food, but we wanted to try an assortment. Next time we will try the sandwiches. Can't wait to order again, do not know why it took us so long to order in the first place.

Tracey M.

Yelp
The temp on the ribs was lukewarm the collards taste like canned greens that they added black pepper to. The potato salad was tasteless . Well it take like vinegar and mayo no other seasonings and it wasn't made fresh. It was leftover it had that taste that you get when potato salad isn't stored properly. I asked to exchange the potato salad for baked beans the waitress said she couldn't exchange them because I tasted the potato salad already. "Oh ok I've never heard of such a thing." Next I think the owner came out. I explained my ribs weren't hot they were warm. And that I couldn't exchange the potato out for the beans. This wasn't a good food experience. I felt like I was being punked. I asked for the ribs to be warmed they came back the same as they did the first time. I don't know what I was thinking I should have left without paying since I didn't enjoy anything. I came home with the lukewarm ribs. The bathroom was very clean. I enjoyed the sweet potato cornbread.
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
The most amazing food. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The kid who typically will only eat pasta ate the better part of a brisket sandwich. Love this place!!
google avatar

T S.

Yelp
GET IT. Don't think twice, don't blink. Order it right now! It's so good I'm afraid to finish it. Bro... the size of the pickles, the cheese sauce... the onions, it's so perfect. I had to look on the website to see who is behind this, Steve Wilson, thank you!
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
It's a little of a mixed bag here. The cheese fries were almost inedible. Funny taste to them. I thought the brisket was excellent The sides were ok The grilled cheese was good The ribs were ok
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Hit and miss. First visit, was looking forward to trying their food. Ribs and sauce were decent but a little tough. The grilled carrots were a good choice. The corn bread was really good. However the Mac and cheese was very disappointing. It had no taste at all. Maybe just a bad batch, but we wouldn't order it again. The big turnoff to us was the whole sheet of rules, including no split checks and 20% tip automatically added because, "our wait staff works hard for their living not to get that at least." If management really feels that way, then pay them more. The service was really good, but a discretionary tip should be at our discretion for good service.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Excellent, simply excellent. This is my go to BBQ establishment - never disappointed. Untold story: they do a lot of outreach to Kensington and other underserved communities. Great business, great people.

Shawn R.

Yelp
Very bland. Nothing special. Sucks because I was excited about trying it. Workers seemed very miserable as well. **EDIT ADDED** The owner is very condescending. Being an owner of a food establishment you'd think he'd be able to take some constructive criticism. You can't please everyone, and I get that. Always willing to give an establishment a 2nd even 3rd try. His private message to me has absolutely stopped that from happening. Yet, I still wish you lick
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
Their barbecue sauce is the absolute best; a little smokey, a little sweet, and just very well balanced.
google avatar

Mandy G.

Yelp
Pulled pork: 5 stars Sweet potato cornbread: 4 stars Baked beans: 2 stars Roasted chicken: 2 stars Classic cornbread: 1 star Mac and cheese: 1 star I ordered take-out from Wilson's because I was really craving some ribs. Lo and behold, when the I opened everything up at home, there were NO RIBS!! :( :( :( While I was super impressed with the pulled pork, and am assuming that the ribs would be equally as delicious, the rest of the stuff I ate from Wilson's was just "meh." The sweet potato cornbread was very tasty, but it was pretty sweet. My husband described it as a dessert muffin. The roasted chicken breast was not a chicken breast. It was a breast that had been sliced into thin patties, and then cooked. It was so dry and tough, and I had to slather it in sauce for it to be enjoyable. Think of a cutlet, without the breading. The classic cornbread and mac and cheese were both just awful. The cornbread was super duper dry and gritty, and the serving size was pathetic (think half the size of a deck of cards). The mac and cheese was basically just a small bowl of noodles with no cheese. I don't think I'd return to Wilson's...unless I was just getting a platter of pork products, and making or buying my own sides to go with it.
google avatar

Star D.

Yelp
I really want to give this place 5* BUT...I've been here several times in the past few years and each time, I've been served lukewarm food. The food is tasty but not hot. I don't get it??!!! I always have to take the food home and reheat to enjoy it. Tonight, I ordered a slab of ribs, wings, broccoli, baked beans and corn bread. Everything was lukewarm except the wings. Please do better Wilson's! Please!!
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
A super friendly counter person greeted us as we entered and seated us immediately. This is my 3rd visit here and I must say the smoked meats and burgers are tasty and good. The inside is cute and comfortable. My dining friends however all commented on how loud the country music was The side items are priced a little on the high side considering the area. So as the selection of side items is wonderful I am hoping they are considering offering them as part of the package if you order a cheesesteak or burger. Nice place with good food so it's definitely worth a stop.
