I lived within walking distance of two Chinatowns (DC and Chicago) and yet could never find that perfect "crappy, but so so good" Chinese like the kind I used to get in Michigan. Now I'm back and after a miss at another spot (the only one open on the Monday we moved in), the husband and I stumbled upon Wing's Gardens. Even the name is perfect.
To start, Chinese is something we order maybe twice a year tops. When I was super fat about ten years ago, I probably had it once every other week. I say this because it's a miracle that we even tried another place so soon after our disappointing experience just a few weeks ago. Anyway, I'm glad we did because this place had the kind of sesame chicken that you think about for days. Not in that "oh man what did I just do?" Kinda way, but more like a "wow, I can't wait for six months to go by just so I can order that again" way. It was crispy, yet moist, and to my great relief, I didn't see any of those questionable pieces that are the wrong kind of pink that you kind of just eat around. Nope. There's some real cooking going on here.
My husband ordered General Tso's which was equally delicious. One order is seriously enough for two people to split. I say that as someone who never takes home leftovers. We got ours with white rice, brown is not an option, and two egg rolls. I love egg rolls so much it's what I named our pug. These did not disappoint. Crunchy, not too salty, and still warm even after the 10 minute drive home.
No delivery, but the drive is worth it. So happy to have finally found my biannual Chinese takeout spot.
