Yelp
Winston Pies is spectacular. I've been once in person and have since discovered it delivers through the apps, and now I know I can get delicious pie brought to my house at any time for the indulgent sum of $9 a slice plus before the various taxes, fees, and gratuities. An expensive but ultimately wonderful discovery.
The shop is cute, but I don't remember it being the kind of place where you linger at a table (though it does seem like there are a few tables if that's what you want). It's small, with a long counter and plenty of pie on display. When I went, there was just one employee present, working the register, and it was easy enough to buy a pie to go.
I got the Carolina Classic Cherry Pie that first visit, and it's one of the best pies I've ever had in my life. The flaky, golden-brown crust is packed full of huge whole cherries, dark and juicy. I was excited to eat it again when I ordered dessert for my parents' 40th anniversary dinner, which we ended up having at my house with my two very small children. Pie, at least, made the occasion more festive.
We shared one slice each of the Carolina Classic Cherry, the Harvest Apple, the Chocolate Cowgirl, and the Key West Lime, along with a pint of vanilla ice cream, which Winston helpfully provides. Everyone loved the whole spread. The apple pie was classic, pleasingly sweet and touched with cinnamon, and the Chocolate Cowgirl was a rich, fudgy chocolate chess pie with a salty oat crust and a drizzle of caramel. The key lime pie was beautiful, with a bright, tart, smooth filling on a graham cracker crust.
I'm happy to live so close to this place and will keep it in mind whenever I want a decadent dessert, especially for a small crowd. I look forward to my next slice of cherry, or really any of those Winston Pies.
