The 13 Best Chicken Wings in Austin

"The jerk chicken wings at Winston’s, a Jamaican trailer in South Austin, have quickly made their way into our monthly rotation. They’re smoky and tender inside with bits of char on the skin. These wings are a little more focused on flavor and tenderness than ultra-crispy skin, but when they’re coated in an intense layer of spicy jerk seasoning like this, that’s a compromise we’re willing to make. They’re also priced by the wing, so you can make a full meal out of them, or just order a couple to accompany your oxtails.   " - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Winston’s Kitchen  - Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"Winston’s Kitchen is a Jamaican trailer near Brodie and Slaughter Lane and, outside of a visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, it’s one of our favorite reasons to make a visit to southwest Austin. And if you happen to live in the area, you probably already know all about Winston’s, especially when it comes to the jerk chicken, some of our favorite in town. The meat is smoky and tender, with little bits of char on the skin. Generously seasoned with jerk spices, the chicken definitely pack some heat. Even if you end up getting something else—like oxtails, red snapper, or beef brisket—the jerk wings are priced individually, so you can throw a couple on for a nice savory side. photo credit: Richard Casteel" - Nicolai McCrary

Google
Winston’s Jamaican Kitchen is hands down one of the best food trucks I’ve tried in Austin — and I’ve tried a lot. The Jamaican patties are next level — flaky, flavorful, and packed with perfectly seasoned filling. You can taste the love and authenticity in every bite. I’m an influencer who gets to explore a lot of different cuisines around the city, this one really stands out. The spices, the tenderness of the meat, the textures. Winston knows what he’s doing. Do not sleep on this truck. It’s the real deal. :)

Google
I have eaten authentic Jamaican cuisine in 5 states including at least 4 locations in 2 of those states. Probably 15 total places over the years that I frequented. Winston's food is the absolute best. My other google account was a top 1% food reviewer and as soon as I get it back I'll post on there. This is hands down the best Jamaican food I've ever had. And the oxtail is the second best meal I've ever had (and 3rd too!). Winston is the best, 2 of the best 3 meals I've had in my life. Jah bless you! I could not recommend it any higher. Much love Winston 🤙 Edit: I've had the curry chicken twice and the oxtail twice. Both out of this world. I can not wait to try the brisket.

Google
Cute little atmosphere and very flavorful food. We picked up to go but ended up eating there. When we picked it up, they were keeping the food warm for us so it was more fresh. Loved the plantains.

Google
Absolutely delicious!!! We ordered jerk chicken plate, beef patties, chicken wrap, beef wrap, and plantains. At the last minute we added wings and they did not disappoint!! They were fabulous!! You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Not to mention the service was incredibly friendly. Highly recommend Winston’s!

Google
Food was spoiled we ordered 2 oxtails plates 72.00 . Smelled as if it was cooked day prior . We called back and explained the issues no problem come get a refund but we were only passing through so my wife disputes it on her car and tells them . Days later they denied that that ever spoke to use or sole bad food. shame on this place . The reviews had to be his friends and family

Google
Winston’s Kitchen is one of my favorite food trucks! The quality of ingredients and the care that goes into making authentic dishes couldn’t be more evident. You’re getting real food made the way it’s supposed to! The portions are large and I’ve had numerous friendly conversations with the staff. I’ll continue recommending this place to everyone!

Google
Winston! Who are you and HOW is your food SO DAMN GOOD? I have to be honest, if someone asked me "what's your favorite cuisine?" I don't think Jamaican would break my top 5. But wow, after last night, it certainly is now a mainstay with us. We had the curry chicken, jerk chicken, plantains, guava cake, and the heavenly beef patty. Not exaggerating, every BITE was 10/10. I had flavors that I've never had before but the warmth and love from the food was as nostalgic as your grandma's cooking. The homemade hot sauce-- divine. You can just tell this place cares and takes pride! Until I get back here, I'll be telling everyone in ATX about my new favorite spot.

Google
I’ve never had Jamaican food before, I’m so glad I picked this place! We had the beef patties, jerk chicken wings, fried plantains, and vegetable plate. Everything was delicious and we will be back for more!

Yelp
Really good fairly priced food. The chicken plate was filling and super flavorful. The meat patties were well made and just flakey enough. Very nice people serving food in the truck with seating areas to enjoy the meal there

Elisa P.

Yelp
Fantastic. We had never had Jamaican cuisine and we went by Yelp reviews. The staff was extremely welcoming and patient. We tried the jerk chicken, curry chicken and plantains. An abundance and variety of flavors. Even better the next day. We would have liked to try the patties but they sell out quickly. We will try to get them next time.

Yelp
This was my first time eating here and I was deeply disappointed. Overall the customer service was superb however the food was extremely mediocre. I grew up on Jamaican food and this was something I've never tasted before. The oxtails themselves were cooked to perfection however the gravy or sauce idk what to call it was sweet and not savory, the peas and rice were nothing more than brown rice and Lima beans. The steamed veggies was a mix of cabbage potatoes red onions and carrots it was absolutely horrendous. I'm truly amazed at the disappointment I felt after seeing so many positive reviews.

Jack E.

Yelp
Just the best jerk chicken, I get Winston's at least every 2 weeks and every time, it's seasoned and cooked to perfection. Proper, authentic Jamaican food and you can't beat it. Highly recommend. Thanks Winston!

Yelp
Has this popped up on your radar? Run toward it. Making a Costco run? Skip their food court and come here instead. Delightful Caribbean food truck. I tried basically every version of their jerk chicken and it was all fabulous. The WINGS ARE BOMB. Absolute stars here. I don't know how they are usually prepared in the Caribbean, but here they appear to have come out of the smoker. Life-changing. Fall off the bone and tender smokiness that makes you wanna pop these into your mouth continuously. The greatest thing too is that they sell these by the piece ($1.25 each). That means that you don't have to commit to a dozen at once, and can try other foods too. Or you know, order more once you realize you didn't order enough. Their plates: don't sleep on their rice and veggies! They are delicious but not overpowering in flavor which you absolutely need with all the jerk flavor lighting up your mouth. Their wrap: i was actually too full by the time we opened this (the goal was to save this for the next day), but the little bite I had was wonderful -- super flavorful! But I'm Asian and i like my rice. Fried plantains: loooove these. So yeah, I was too full and told myself that I would save the cake for later too. But a little bite now, just to taste. Whoops, ate it all and have no cake left to enjoy later. Maybe we should have bought one for now and one for later?

Yelp
The food is pricey for what you get imo, but the playground is great for my kiddo. We'll be back again.

Yelp
Burnt chicken and rice and peas.....that is what the jerk chicken taste and smells like. I ordered it to go and when I got back to my place the smell overtook the house. My daughter who is young and usually eats some of whatever I'm eating would not even eat the food. She tasted it and spit it out. I could barely finish the food. My wife ordered the curry chicken with rice and peas and it was a bit better. However, the food lacked authentic Jamaican taste and seasoning. It lacked salt and rice tasted burnt. Jamaican rice is usually a Shelly style of rice and this was not. I would like to think this was maybe an off day and possibly because it was close to closing time it may have been the bottom of the pot. (If it was it should have never been served) But on a lighter note, the portions were more than generous. The cashier was very pleasant and the venue is very unique. So all in all, if your looking for a Jamaican vibe it's not a bad place to visit but if you know real Jamaican food and your a foodie this one ain't it.

Yelp
Laid back spot in S Austin w gtop notch service before you even get to the food. Tasty options Had a lil of everything. Beef patties were flavorful w a light flaky crust. Snapper was well seasoned and cooked, crispy outside , light and tender inside ( my fav ) offered in 2 sizes. Curry was light yet flavorful. Jerk Chicken was on point. Had wings as well, a lil dry could have just been an off day no problem tho for the price ( next time ) . I was warned of the level of spiciness, but they could have kicked it up a notch or 2 for me. But you can get Mr Winston's saice on the side a def must. Also bottled and sold $4/ bottle. All in all a good visit w many more planned. Thank guys

Yelp
From the food to the service and vibes everything here was amazing. Tried the jerk chicken plate and fried plantains for the first time and loved both.

Yelp
Location, location, location. It means so many things. In our case, Winston's is the closest source of food to our house. I also think it's an interesting spot, an old (dare I say, failed?) bank location. Well, the folks at Winston's did everything they could to make the space theirs, and I gotta say they did an amazing job. The space behind the trailer makes for a nice and eclectic dining area, if you're so inclined. All of that aside, the food is damn special. Sure, you have to have an affinity for spice but if you do, you won't be disappointed. The jerk chicken was memorable, even the rice was awesome. The oxtail was way more complex that I'd expect and those warm plantains besought it all home. I definitely recommend. I really wish they had a larger menu and some more to offer but the 3-4 things are great. I look forward to more visits!

Yelp
Really great people Thaaaaaat kuuuuuuush Not jerking you around Spicy and sweet sauce Open air waiting room

Nate M.

Yelp
The food here was DELICIOUS. We ordered the Jerk Chicken Plate and Brisket Wrap with a side of plantains. The chicken had a flavorful, smoky crust with tender and juicy meat inside. I savored every bite. The brisket was tender which paired nicely with the crispy red cabbage and chewy outer wrap. The plantains were sweet and salty, a nice accompaniment. We will be back.
google avatar

Monifa M.

Yelp
Jamaica woulda shame! Bun up rice and tough dry chicken! Mushy mushy vegetables. Not an ounce of salt in the curry. *sucks teeth* Crosses!
google avatar

Arielle S.

Yelp
Freaking delicious wings. Omg. Definitely come here !! I also got the papaya drink and a coke, I'm really picky eater so if I like it you will too.

Yelp
Maaaaaaaaaaaan let me tell you something. This the best mf jerk chicken I ever had in my life. You want true and through authentic Jamaican.... Look no further. Hats off too you brotha, the food actually made me cry tears of pure bliss.

Yelp
Jerk chicken, brisket- plantains and sauces were amazing. Plus beans and rice. New favorite local spot.

Yelp
Ordered Curry Chicken plate Beef Patty Food was delicious but wait was long. Almost an hour and the way the food was pictured isnt how it was served. We thought the food would come with cabbage (as pictured) but it didnt so we had to ask for that additional but it was delicious. Winston the owner and chef was friendly welcoming. The place is in a food truck area near the Barn bar which plays live music and has outdoor seating and free parking. Found a hidden gem in South Austin
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
My original review used the term jersey chicken. I don't know what that is. Probably spell check error. It should have been jerk chicken.
google avatar

Doha C.

Yelp
Got the jerk chicken & a side of plantain. I was surprised how amazing the plantain were considering there aren't many reviews about them? So good I would legitimately come back for 5 orders of plantain. Called ahead & got it for take out, by the time I got home the food was still piping hot & perfect condition! The jerk chicken order was okay, I didn't get sauce bc I thought it would come w a small amount/thought the spiciness in the reviews was also from seasoning. I typically like spicy food, the chicken alone wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be so would recommend getting the sauce if you're into that. I'll probably order the curry chicken next visit. Portions were very well!
google avatar

Max R.

Yelp
Got the jerk chicken wings, curry chicken, beef patty, and plantains. Jerk chicken wings: I liked them, my wife did not. She did not like the spice level. The best part was the perfect cook on the chicken. Fell apart and juicy. Would like to see more flavors. Chicken curry: Asked for no rice (restricted diet). Gave rice anyway. Curry was poured over rice causing the rice to sop up curry and making a chicken and rice. Would be a nice chicken and rice, but not what was requested. Beef patty: I have been to Jamaica and these are comparable, but it was under stuffed and had an air pocket. When I took off the excess bread, it was pretty good. Plaintains: Great palate cleanser after jerk wings with homemade hot sauce. Might go again, but a little disappointed with the rice being added when requested to be left out.

Yelp
9 months later, and I will now update it to 6 stars! ****** We are regular to-go customers here. We send our adult son , with cash in hand, at least once a week to get Winston's. Always soooo delicious and such a great amount of food for the price. Thank you, Winston and staff for all the hard work and extra friendliness! *Applause*. *Applause*. *Applause*
google avatar

Cameron N.

Yelp
It was great! There was so much food for such a cheap price as well as a short wait time. The sauce was very hot for a fair warning :)

Grace G.

Yelp
$5 for a dry beef patty? No no no. I thought it was $5 for two otherwise I would NEVER have ordered it on UberEats. Okay Jamaican food but would not go back EVER!
google avatar

Jaala D.

Yelp
I got the jerk plate (two drumsticks and a thigh it could use a tad more seasoning) that comes with cabbage and rice and peas. Cabbage was a little different then what I'm use to but the whole plate was legit! If you go and you open up ur box and notice that there's no jerk sauce, (I was heated) don't be alarm they put it on the side (two of them). Next time when I come back I am going to order the red snapper. I hope they add beef pattie with coco bread and cheese and Oxtail plate.

Brent H.

Yelp
Food was absolute fire. If you're looking for some jerk chicken, this is the spot. Very cool staff. Super friendly and very nice people. The chicken falls right off the bone and it's seasoned really well. GET THE HOT SAUCE! We had some of the hot sauce and we liked it so much we bought a dang bottle. Absolute fire. Go there.
google avatar

Haydee M.

Yelp
Excellent jamaican food! I love that their menu is limited but focused on quality. Their $5 jamaican patty is so tasty - so much more than the sum of it's parts. Their sauces are RIGHT, spicy but flavorful. The baked chicken is moist. Owned by a great family who puts love into their food. I love that this is a neighborhood food truck.

M L.

Yelp
The search for food right now stops here: I'm sitting in my truck right now waiting for my order, it's 34° outside with intermittent freezing rain and they are open and serving it up! Gotta support the hustle of dedicated small businesses. We've been here many times before, the service is fantastic and the food is amazing. We usually get their Jamaican Jerk chicken wings, though nothing has failed to be delicious. Trying something new tonight. If you ran across this little place on yelp through a general or however you ran across it, come by and enjoy some delicious food! Ps, Austin, thank you for the cake Update: just got home and opened everything up. Oh my gosh. There is so much here. The flavors and spices, creating a Smokey and spicy little party on my tastebuds off set by the plantains and sweet sauce. Oh my gosh, way better than the burger I was on my way to go order up.
google avatar

Dee C.

Yelp
The best jerk chicken I have ever eaten. I have cravings for this meal specifically at times, and I am never disappointed. The chicken is delicious and melt off the bone. The sides are quality as well. The sauce is great with the perfect amount of spice. The service is good and food is ready pretty quick.

Yelp
This review has nothing to do with the food-- but it's based on the service I received yesterday . I've been eyeing this place for about a month or 2 was excited to try it. They open at 6pm on weekdays so I went at about 6:40pm and John (taking orders) told me that they had every except Jerk Chicken because they got a late start grilling today. There's no worse feeling than salivating over a meal you've had your mind set on all day, only to find out that you can't have it John then proceeded to tell me that it will be ready around 7:30pm and that I can order through UberEats or Grubhub and get it later tonight. So at this point I'm pretty upset because I have a sick child and husband at home and I am trying to satisfy my pregnancy cravings of Jamaican food. I reluctantly place an order when I get home for Grubhub. Worst part is that now Grubhub is saying they are only taking preorders for deliver at 8:45pm tonight! That's 2 hrs from now. But I told you I was craving this stuff and wanted to try it. So I placed the order. At about 7:50pm I call because I wanted to request sauce on the side. John answers and tells me that they don't have any delivery orders for tonight but he will call me back (he was walking from a customer) when he gets back to the truck to check it out but that he didn't see any orders come through. 20 mins go by and I don't hear from John. So at 8:10pm I call back to try to get an update and John tells me he cancelled my order. I told him I didn't get a cancellation email and then as I am Saying that I open my email and see he cancelled it the order at 8:09pm (why me Lord?!?!?!) So I never received a call back and now my order is canceled completely. I tell John that I had been waiting and I wanted to order so he turns the app back on and tells me to check again if I want to reorder. Now I go back to the app and the earliest time I can get food is 10:45pm... 4 hours after I originally showed up . John had to hurry and get off because he had a customer at the window. I think I am more upset because I don't see why there was any reason to cancel my order. At the time I called John told me that the chicken was just now ready and coming off the grill! I would have even been happy with a slightly late order-- but cancelling after I called is what really made things worse. I gave an extra star because John did text me after things settled and told me to come back and ask for him so he could hook me up. I really want to support this black owned business and try Winston's food but I don't want to go through this again. If you do decide to try this place please be sure to call first and then maybe this won't happen to you.

Yelp
The food was delicious!! We tried the curry chicken plate and their jerk chicken. The curry was perfectly seasoned and the jerk chicken was smoked to perfection with the best jerk seasoning that I've ever had. We also got plantains and a couple of vegetable patties. Everything was great! The hot sauce is soooo good! I literally am going back because of the sauce and have recommended it to friends! Can't wait to go back!!!
google avatar

Adolfo L.

Yelp
Great food from good people. Jerk chicken or jerk wings, any of the wraps, and the Pattie's are all top shelf. If they have a guava dessert, take advantage.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Ordered for the first time through UberEats and it was so delicious! Got the Jerk Chicken plate and beef patty. The chicken was flavorful and crispy on the outside and so tender (almost like pulled pork). My only wish is that the sauces came in larger containers because the sweet/spicy one was amazing, just not enough. The beef patty tasted a lot like pie crust and the beef was very minced, almost like refried beans. I don't know if I'd order it again but my bf loved it.
google avatar

Ryan O.

Yelp
Super disappointing. Jerk chicken - VERY dry Rice and peas - VERY dry Fried plantains - Dry Jerk chicken wings - Dry Beef patty - Tasty I grew up on Jamaican food and this just did not live up to my expectations. The flavors weren't the best but also weren't the worst. It was all just so very dry - which makes it unappealing. Somehow, even with a large helping of cabbage on top, the rice & peas were still dry. Maybe I just got them on a bad day. Might try again.
google avatar

Karen Y.

Yelp
Such delicious comfort food! Obscenely delicious. Make you slap your mama delicious. The vegetables and peas-and-rice by themselves are worth a trip. Got the brisket tonight and oh my goodness...so flavorful and moist. Do your tastebuds a favor and good to Winston's!
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
Lucky to find Jamaican food in South Austin. Located in a food truck park on Brodie,Winstons brings a taste of the island to the SW. We had the veggie rice, plantains, and jerk chicken wIngs.
google avatar

LeeAnne Q.

Yelp
Winston's is as authentic as it comes..if you go to the island you will taste the same flavor! This review is for uber eats; jerk chicken and curry chicken. Delivery didn't take long and the food was still hot when we got it. The jerk chicken is so tender and smoked just right!! My friend devoured his curry chicken in less than 5 minutes...the whole thing! Rice and beans were moist and cabbage was good!! If you're in Austin and looking for Jamaican try Winston's!! I almost gave them 5 stars but I want want to try the beef patty when I go back and I didn't see festivals on the menu...or oxtails
google avatar

River R.

Yelp
Every dish is amazing. I simply love the jerk chicken and all the different sauces. Be sure to try the awesome wings.
google avatar

Della B.

Yelp
The giant wrap was delicious and the best pantans I've had since I lived in the Keys. Can't wait to try something else on the menu
google avatar

Kendrick C.

Yelp
Righteous!!!!! The best Jerk wings in Austin for sure. Very tender fall off the bone and smoked to perfection wings. It was just enough heat and tons of flavor. Can't wait to get the fried whole red snapper next time.
google avatar

Tally B.

Yelp
We are so blessed to have Winston's here in Austin!! Huge portions of top quality Jamaican food that is so good, you'll dream about it! And it's not expensive. The trailer is in a serene location. I'm totally paranoid about Covid and I felt super safe getting my order here. Try everything. It's all delicious. If you're looking for a Covid safe date night out, you'll impress your partner taking them here. Oh, and Winston sells bottles of hot sauce that make awesome gifts to send to out of town family. Bless Up! Winston's 4 Eva'!!

Jonathan R.

Yelp
No matter what you do, get some of the wings too, they are to die for (especially with their house hot sauce!)!!! Everything we've tried here is AMAZING!

Thomas A.

Yelp
My family and I have been wanting to try this place for a while and wasn't disappointed. We tried alittle bit of everything ( Oxtail / curry chicken / jerk chicken). and they were all delicious.
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Came back for the jerk chicken and asked to try the jerk sauce. It is DEFINITELY spicy but super flavorful. Tastes like legit jerk with a slight sweetness, all the good spices, and the heat. Please do jerk pork shoulder!!!!!! Yummm
google avatar

Aaron H.

Yelp
The jerk chicken wrap is great and is a huge portion. Winston is grilling up the chicken right there with excellent Jamaican spices. Glad I went!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
It's been a long time since I had something so tasty; my meals during this pandemic have been pretty monotonous. I'm not one to seek out spicy food but the jerk chicken had such a variety of flavors, I couldn't stop myself; I sent my neighbor over there so he could try it too. This morning I'm having leftover curry chicken for breakfast; again, so many levels of deliciousness. Thank y'all for working through this tough time and sharing your talents with South Austin.
google avatar

Shama P.

Yelp
I got the vegetarian plate and it was great! I do wish they had more veggie options, but it's not a main part of the cuisine so I get it. Combined w plantains, it was enough food for me to eat it for lunch the next day, and it reheated well!

Alain S.

Yelp
Excellent Jamaican food. We have tried the vegetarian and beef patties so good. A jerk chicken plate is amazing. It's a huge order and great value for the price. Love this place. I wish I found this much sooner!!!!!!!
