"Open since 1983, Wishing Well Shave Ice, which operates out of a white food truck on Kuhio Highway, has long been a staple in Hanalei. More recently, though, it’s taken a fresh, organic turn under new owners—Kauai natives, Jesse Merle Jones and Aamion Goodwin—who have done away with artificially flavored syrups and powders, while still making really tasty, refreshing shave ice. This is also an easy spot to pick up a breakfast acai bowl and cup of coffee."

The 9 Best Shave Ice Spots in Hawai‘i | Eater

"From this stationary food truck in Hanalei, find organic syrups and artificial ones, along with fresh fruit and honey toppings. Try the recommended combinations, such as Tropical Bliss — a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream buried under ice soaked with liliko‘i and coconut syrups and topped with papaya chunks and coconut flakes." - Martha Cheng

Google
Soooo good, the best shaved ice of the spots I’ve tried in Kauai and Big Island so far. I ate 3 of them in one day I couldn’t get enough. Their organic flavors are so lush and goooood, I was surprised by the ones I ended up liking. In order of best: Mango, Ginger, Coconut, Lillikoi. All yummy though! Their mochi pieces are so good too. Next time I want to try vanilla and banana flavors. Get the Tropical Bliss or Sunset!

Google
This charming little shack offers organic shave ice. We tried the Tropical Bliss and Sunset flavors with Macnut Ice cream. It was yummy. We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere.

My husband and I ran into "Uncle Mike" at the back of these businesses next to the parking lot. He told us he owns the coffee shop and shave ice businesses here and said, "you gotta try it. It's the best shave ice in the world!" It was very good, and in our opinion, better than another place we tried the other night. If you are like my husband and like coconut, try the piña colada. If you're like me and you like cherry soda, get da bomb with cherry and root beer flavors. The servings are generous. You can also build your own. You won't be disappointed!

Google
I asked the waitress what was the best flavor to get- she said the tropical bliss, because it uses all natural flavors- with “passion fruit coconut syrup over macnut ice cream topped with papaya and coconut flakes” - what a great recommendation. There’s some consensus online that this is the best shave ice and ice cream on the island, I didn’t try any other places so I can’t say, but I will say it was amazing. They also have an amazing coffee shop next door with amazing Açaí bowls. If you get coffee get the “coco mocha” - “Choice of chocolate, white chocolate, or cacao blend, coconut cream, espresso with milk of choice”- their signature and most recommended drink, highly recommended. For the Açaí bowl “the works” is a solid choice. Very fresh and natural, no fake sugars

Google
My Dad still prefers Ululani's but personally, this is the best shaved ice I've ever had! I tried ice cream on the bottom for the first time and now I can't imagine shaved ice without it! So yummy + good atmosphere

Google
Overall it is good shaved ice. They have a lot of options and topping. They also sell ice cream. There was a line and we waited about twenty minutes. Prices seem reasonable for Kauai.

Google
The thing about shave ice is that normally, syrup will coat your throat in sugar and make you cough a whole lot... Their shave ice DIDN'T do that to me at all or make me lethargic, so this was an awesome discovery! Their flavors were pretty good too, I had P.O.G., Bubble Gum and Strawberry. -- I couldn't taste a huge amount of the Bubble Gum flavor, but it was there. This was a lovely place to eat shave ice from, there's also 4 benches around to sit on. So, if you want to sit down while eating, you can!

Wishing Well Shave Ice is a nice spot for a sweet and refreshing treat. The fast and friendly service made my experience enjoyable from start to finish. You have the option to choose between organic or traditional flavors, but you can't mix the two. This allows for a personalized experience, as you can select up to two flavors if you opt for organic and up to three if you prefer traditional. I appreciated the ability to customize my shaved ice to my taste. The shaved ice itself was delicious, as you might expect from a classic Hawaiian treat. The flavors were vibrant and refreshing. While I didn't add ice cream this time, I can see how it would elevate the experience even further. Overall, Wishing Well Shave Ice is a great spot to cool down and indulge in a delicious dessert. With its friendly service, customizable flavors, and high-quality shaved ice, it's definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Another amazing shaved ice place. This was an Hanalei and we went after spending the day on the beach. So incredible! Again, the macadamia nut ice cream is to die for.
google avatar

Thien H.

Yelp
In the end it was $24.50 for two shave ices: The Hanalei Sweetie which came with a little bit of vanilla ice cream inside and condensed milk. Two people I shared this with noted that they wanted way more condensed milk. The Sunset (no ice cream). I did see some real fruit seeds so the syrup they use is probably made from real fruit. The coconut cream on top is thick. It wasn't overly sweet. These two shave ices were alright. The fruit flavors could be more pronounced, more concentrated. I've had fluffier/finer texture of the ice and more ice cream in the center of a shave ice on Maui.

Yelp
A lot of recommendations for when searching for best shave ice on Kauai. There was a consistent long line, but don't be discouraged as the staff keeps it moving very quickly. We tried 4 flavors and will rate below. Whatever you do, be sure to get the macadamia nut ice cream as it was stellar and would be delicious with every flavored ice combo. Pina colada- 7/10 a little too sweet but taste exactly like the drink Rainbow- 8/10 just like a rainbow icee, hit for kids Da Bomb- 9/10 rootbeer and cherry Yum!! Caffeine Monkey 10/10- absolute best flavor ever!! Very cute little spot, with a couple little shops and outdoor seating. Be sure to grab a table and shade fast.

Yelp
We love this place. When we are in Hanalei we always have to stop by and get a shave ice. I usually get Da Bomb and Rainbow. We love it. We always try and buy a shirt, hat, etc. please stop by this place when you visit the island. It's worth it.

Yelp
Came here twice while on vacation in Kauai. The ice cream is yummy and creamy and they have really good flavors. I especially liked the macadamia and coffee. The kids ordered shaved ice and loved it. The girls working here were really nice and quick to fix an order they mixed up. There is always a line but they are pretty quick. Fun little location with lots of seating.
google avatar

Yelp
Driving through Hanalei we stumbled upon this cute shave ice truck. It was nice to see some natural organic flavors. My kids thoroughly enjoy shave ice so we got them passion fruit with Lilikoi puree. I wanted to try something fun so I got the passion fruit and hibiscus lime. The passion fruit was good but the hibiscus lime was my favorite. The hibiscus lime had the tart bite of hibiscus without being overly sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed the natural flavors and because I love tart things. Service was good, pleasant. Parking is hit or miss depending on what time you come. We lucked out for coming before lunch with parking right in front. By the time we left there was so much traffic going through town we were glad to get going.

Yelp
If you come to Hawaii, you need to get shaved ice. And if you're by Hanalei bay, you need to stop by the wishing well! Shaved ice is served out of a small truck and there are a ton of different flavors. We got one of the premade Connie's and our favorite was the Li Hing Mui flavor!!! This was our first time trying Li Hing Mui, so we were a little skeptical but it was the perfect combination of sweet, sour and a little salty! It sounds a little weird but mixed with the condensed milk it was soooo refreshing. The shaved ice came out fast and there are a bunch of tables out in front to sit at. Be warned though, like much of Kauai there are a lot of chickens in the prowl!

Yelp
Whenever we're in Kauai we come to Wishing Well Shave Ice! The portions are large, so many flavors to choose from, and who doesn't need a refreshing shave ice on a hot Kauai day?? There's normally a line, but it moves fast and you'll need the time to look at the menu and decide what you want anyway! Service is friendly and there's a lot of large tables scattered around so you can sit and enjoy your treat. The area has a few cute little shops to explore also, where you can find hats, shirts, sweatshirts, stickers, etc. it's a fun place to hang around for awhile while in Hanalei. My only complaint on this trip was that I would have liked more ice cream at the bottom of my shave ice, there wasn't much.
google avatar

Chelsea W.

Yelp
I thought this was just OK shave ice compared to other places in Kauai. It seems like a small amount for how much they charge. They do some organic flavors but I went with non organic because I wanted a flavor they didn't have in organic. My husband got the "rainbow" but thought it had flavors that weren't listed on the menu. Both of us think the strawberry we got was accidentally bubble gum, which was very off putting.
google avatar

Sarah I.

Yelp
Incredible shave ice with choice of ice cream go with the macadamia nut for sure. Cute little location right off the road and friendly service. Best Shea ice on the island.
google avatar

Alan H.

Yelp
We were drawn to the Wishing Well by it's laid back charm in the Slow Yourself Down complex and were hoping for some amazing shave ice. It was cold and refreshing, but nowhere near the best I've had in Hawaii. The texture was a little off - not light and airy enough and somewhat gritty, somewhere in between a shave ice and a sno cone - and the flavors did not burst, although I appreciated the specks of strawberries (apparently these little seed-like structures are called achenes - learned something from writing this review). Good enough for a hot day but I'll still be searching for an amazing shave ice before heading back to the mainland.
google avatar

Yelp
We loooved this little delicious hut of sweet treats! The quality of ingredients shows. We enjoyed the shave ice, ice cream and coffee. I had the organic Mango & Lilikoi with coconut cream on top. It was so ono. My husband had a Vanilla Latte with Macadamia Nut Milk. So good! The ladies who run the shop were so friendly and kind. Even with the long line that kept growing, they were smiling, spreading aloha. Mahalo Wishing Well, we'll miss you so!
google avatar

Yelp
When it comes to cool treats, nothing screams Hawai'i more than shave ice. Delicious fruity flavors combined with macadamia ice cream and condensed milk in a cool icy form is sure to satisfy anyone on a hot day. We had the mango, guava, and lychee combination and wow is that refreshing! The flavors were on point and having the condensed milk and macadamia ice cream balances the fruit with the creaminess of the dairy is amazing. A must stop for those that want a cool treat!

Yelp
this was the best shaved iced place we had during our trip! after a long 8 hour and 8 mile hike, we wanted a refreshing reward and immediately thought of shaved iced. this place did not disappoint! it's located in a cute little shopping area in Hanalei. line was not too long either. my favorite thing about the dessert was being able to add ice cream and the macadamia nut one was a huge winner stop by the place if you are looking for a quick and tasty treat

Yelp
Wishing Well Shave Ice is a must-visit spot when visiting Hanalei. The shave ice here was one of our favorites from our trip! They have regular and organic flavor options for your shave ice in addition to a variety of ice creams if you'd prefer ice cream over shave ice. Either way, you really can't go wrong. Their setup is adorable. They serve basically out of what appears to be a parked food truck with a roof that has an overhang. There are picnic tables with umbrellas where you can sit and enjoy your shave ice, and next door is their coffee shop, although we didn't check it out ourselves. We both tried the pina colada shave ice and just fell in love. It was so delightful, delicious, and refreshing. I can't imagine visiting Hanalei without stopping here on our way in or out of town :)
google avatar

Glecy L.

Yelp
Driving through and was craving shaved ice and glad we ran into this place. It is very comparable to Waiola's. They do have both traditional and organic (made from real fruits) syrup. We tried both and it was both good. Both had fruity flavor that is not lost with the ice. Ambiance- very nice and quaint. There are a lot of seating area and has umbrellas for shade. Must try when going to Hanalei

Yelp
Though you might have to wait in a line for a few minutes, the shave ice at Wishing Well is definitely worth your time. They offer about 12 different shave ice flavors and 6 different ice cream flavors. It doesn't seem like you can go wrong between the ice cream and shave ice, but for me, the real treat came in the combination of both: I got the Sunset Shave Ice and added Mac-Nut ice cream to it, and it was fantastic! An amazing treat not far from Hanalei Beach. There are a few shaded tables to sit at to enjoy Wishing Well, but depending on the crowd, you might have to stand around the area to eat your treat. I'd love to return again and try something new!

Yelp
SO happy we came upon Wishing Well Shaved Ice during our day trip in Hanalei. The day was hot and this was what we needed. The menu had so many tempting options, but we opted for the Tropical Bliss, which turned out to be a delicious and refreshing treat.
google avatar

Yelp
Always hits the spot when in Kauai. Order and chill outside while enjoying your bowl of deliciousness. Service is fast too so don't worry about the line.
google avatar

Zabrina W.

Yelp
The shave ice was delicious. So delicious that I took the picture after I almost finished it. I ordered the rainbow which includes macadamia nut ice-cream. The line was extremely long and a bit slow which was a bit intimidating at first. I almost opted on not having the desert. Maybe it is timing but I felt like I would never order. But once ordered the treat came out pretty fast and the ladies working the truck were very pleasant. I recommend trying it if in the area.
google avatar

Jevonah K.

Yelp
Not very friendly staff. My shaved ice was lacking flavor and didn't have enough syrup. I asked for more and the girl I asked almost told me no. She gave it to me but was rude about it and when I said thank you she didn't respond at all. The flavor was alright, not as good as Jo Jo's shaved ice. Portion was pretty small in my opinion as well.

Trista S.

Yelp
We have always loved Wishing Well for the 20 Years that we have been coming to Kauai. We have not been here for several years and our kids were so excited to come back after a long beach day. We arrived at 5:15, signs all over say they are open until 5:30. We run up to get in line, to be told by the workers that they are closed. The reasons I received: they were understaffed (two people were in line) and they were tired and wanted to go home for the night. Please have the courtesy to stay open during your advertised hours. Don't make Wishing Well a priority, service and flavors are better elsewhere.
google avatar

Pallavi P.

Yelp
After a warm afternoon spent browsing through the shops in Hanalei, make your way to wishing well shave ice for a cool, refreshing treat! They have a variety of combinations with ice-cream, condensed milk, coconut cream and you can get your own custom combo as well. The ladies working the place seem like they are having a good time, at times multi-tasking with the orders without notice leaving the customer wondering when they'd come back and take your order. The shave ice is delicious with generous flavors and toppings and feels wonderful on a warm day. Don't be deterred by the at times long line, the shave ice is worth it!

Yelp
We always make sure to stop by Wishing Well whenever on the North Shore. We've been fortunate enough to visit the island once, sometimes twice a year and no trip to Hanalei town is complete without going to Wishing Well for some shave ice and acai bowls. I tend to order natural (organic) fruit juice flavor syrups for my shave ice. I usually go with lychee, coconut, lilikoi or pineapple flavs with li hing mui or a snowcap. No ice cream in the shave ice for me, ever. Usually runs about $8-$10 with toppings... My lady loves to get their acai bowls. She always gets the Good Times bowl ($15) that comes with granola, banana, peanut butter, mac nut, chia seeds, toasted coconut & a coconut cream drizzy. This is her guaranteed order every trip. The whole Wishing Well compound has evolved in the last few years. When we started going to the island, shave ice, acai bowls and coffee were served out of the truck. Now, only shave ice and ice cream are served out of the truck. They built a beautiful, light, wooden space towards the back of the property for acai bowls and coffee. It's a really nice build out. There are lounge chairs, benches and board games out back. They've built a nice space for their customers to enjoy their refreshments and relax. I really like it... They have really cleanly designed merch too, The Otto trucker hats for Wishing Well coffee are nice and came in dark brown and tan colors. Simple and clean. My lady's favorite store on the island is Slow Yourself Down which is also part of the Wishing Well Shave Ice property and run by the same folks. Nicely designed, consciously made shirts, hats, sweatshirts and hoodies. We always stop in. She always makes a purchase. Not cheap but high quality. See you next summer.... Slow Yourself Down is the mantra.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS BOMB! Everything we got was amazing. Definitely recommend getting the Mac Nut ice cream with your shave ice! (Also cute chickens)
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
After an idealic visit to Hanalei Bay we stopped by Wishing Well Shave ice. We tried one of their suggested bowls (Tropical Bliss) and two of our own creation (passion fruit, strawberry, hibiscus lime, snow cap and coconut flakes over Mac nut ice cream). The group decided we preferred our own bowl above the suggested bowl. Great flavor options, cute little shave ice cart with a few picnic tables. I would keep this in mind for future visits to Hanalei. The service was friendly and the bowls were done in a timely manner.
google avatar

Tuan H.

Yelp
Really cool shave ice truck in Hanalei! Delicious flavors topped with condensed milk, coconut shavings, and fresh fruits, on top of vanilla or Mac nut ice cream. The service is very friendly and quick! We got out shave ice and savored it at one of the outdoor tables with an amazing view of the surrounding mountains. Hanalei is a beautiful small town with breathtaking landscapes! Wishing well is definitely a must stop when you are visiting Hanalei!
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
This is the best shave ice I've had so far! The texture of the ice is so smooth and creamy, especially with v the Mac nut ice cream. The portion was very generous, but my friends and I finished so quickly and ended up ordering more! They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from. I wish they had longer hours.
google avatar

Jo Q.

Yelp
Oh my gosh it's so hard to pick a favorite flavor from all the Shave Ice places I went to. But this place makes organic syrups. You have a choice to pick from their organic flavored syrup with 2 flavors or their traditional for 3 flavors. We ended up getting a traditional and the organic and their organic was good and not too sweet. We tried the passion fruit which I have never seen before and this flavor is super yummy! We did add ice cream to the one we had the original syrups and It was a very small- tiny scope of ice cream. I wasn't sure we had any until the end. That was the reason for the 4 stars but the service was fast and the organic flavors is great.

Tj S.

Yelp
We LOVE this place and always make it a point to come here. The long lines tell the story of popularity, but it moves quickly, so don't be discouraged.
google avatar

Rey C.

Yelp
Discovered this place while actually trying to look for Jojo's instead and we parked about 2 blocks short of our desired destination. Instead of getting in the car and driving up the road to find some parking, we tried to walk down to our destination but quickly found out it was quite a ways and we got hot and thirsty. On the way back we saw this place so I thought we'd give it a try. The entire crew inside the makeshift truck were all girls and they seemed bored until I placed my order. I decided upon the Tropical Bliss while my wife got the Sunset. It almost felt like an eternity waiting for our orders to be fulfilled and were the only ones in line before a large group was suddenly behind us. When my order came out I was disappointed to find a hair in the ice. The girl quickly apologized about the hair and jokingly pointed out to the other girls and asked who's hair was it? She offered a refund back to my card which I quickly found out it was a full refund when I thought it was only for my order. The shaved ice was fine and refreshing and the blend of ingredients was good. Same for my wife's. You always must have some ice cream to top off the desert waiting for you at the bottom of the bowl. There were green benches nearby with umbrella covering so we sat there and enjoyed our cooling treat. $23 for two shaved ice including tip. Had it not been for the hair incident I would have rated it much higher. Nobody will wear any hair covering if I suggest this so my best advice for the girls is to make sure to check the shaved ice before serving it out to your customers.

Yelp
Iconic local institution in the charming town of Hanalei. Shave ice was good (got the Rainbow with Mac Nut ice cream) -- it's not the best I've had, nor the fluffiest texture compared to other shave ice spots, but tasty nonetheless with a chill vibe.

R H.

Yelp
From a Hawaii resident: Not good. Poor/inconsistent execution. Mid customer service. Mostly hype.

Panididi B.

Yelp
Seen some reviews about customer service being bad but notice that there is and awfully long line and also noticed how draining and drained the workers looked but the shave ice is amazing and workers are mostly very sweet
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Delicious treats from one of the top shave ice places on the island. Set in a food truck are, this place produces some of the best tropical flavors. Lots of shaded seating and very quick service. Get the type with ice cream at the bottom.
google avatar

Bhadri K.

Yelp
What a charming Hanalei location for this lovely Shaved Ice spot. Really friendly people and fast service. Also, they were nice enough to explain the different options along with their suggestions. I chose the customized option with the organic real fruit based syrup options over macadamia nut ice cream. Was really fresh and yummy... Not too sweet either !! Highly recommend this spot when visiting the garden Isle !!
google avatar

Ally L.

Yelp
Not too sure what the hype is about but didn't find wishing well shave ice to be that good. Just my opinion but the portion size and price was definitely not worth it. I ordered the ice cream combo instead of shave ice. I ordered "berry tart" and switched out strawberry ice cream for Macnut ice cream.
google avatar

Sergio F.

Yelp
Meh. They need to add more juice/flavor and add flavors. Shave ice on Oahu is FAR better.
google avatar

D. B.

Yelp
Their flavors and syrups are unmatched in quality and taste. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Kauai! The only negatives: they are pricey, on the smaller side, and the ice cream portion is pretty tiny. The quality is A+++ though
google avatar

Meagan L.

Yelp
This was my favorite Shave Ice place that we found on the island! They have organic homemade flavors that taste way better than the typical syrup that people use. It's more fresh and not too sugary. So good. Make sure you order one of the organic flavors and you won't regret it! The Tropical Bliss flavor was for sure my favorite! We had to keep going back for more because we couldn't get enough. It has Passionfruit and Coconut syrup, fresh papaya, coconut flakes, and macadamia nut ice cream. 5 stars!!
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
I highly recommend this place. 10/10 I ordered the Local. The ice is so soft and the flavors are mouth watering.
google avatar

Victor D.

Yelp
Came here for my first Hawaiian shaved ice and got two flavors, the Local and Pina colada. I would describe the shaved ice as a mix between a snow cone and bingsoo (Asian shaved ice). The texture was soft and it's clear the focus is more on the syrup, vs. bingsoo which is on raw ingredients, for instance, red beans. The Pina colada one tasted a lot like Pina colada and it had ice cream on the bottom but the ice cream had macadamia nuts which was a bit weird. Overall, it does taste refreshing but it doesn't have another element besides just sweet and syrupy. I do much prefer bingsoos over this.

Taylor L.

Yelp
Best shave ice on the island! You can definitely split one. We tried "The Local" and it was delicious!

Courtney B.

Yelp
What a special place! The employees are nice and welcoming. The shaved ice is on another level with flavor and presentation. A must go!

Yelp
I had to try shave ice during my trip to Kauai and was happy to find this cute truck located not far from my airbnb in Princeville. I swung by mid afternoon on a Saturday and the line/wait wasn't too long. Perhaps the on-and-off rain helped with that. It's nice that they offer organic options as well as traditional flavors. I went with the Sunset, an organic vegan option, which included 3 fruity flavors and a small dollop of coconut whip on top ($9). I believe one flavor was mango and another passion fruit? The shave ice was pretty refreshing and it was fun to try a few flavors in one bowl. Even though I love coconut I would have preferred the shave ice without the coconut whip, but that's probably just a personal preference. I heard others rave about the macnut ice cream and was a little jealous ha. The girls working in the truck were polite and efficient. The area is super cute and there are a decent amount of spots to sit down and enjoy your treat. The price seems pretty on par given how expensive food is on the island. I'd be happy to stop by again if I'm lucky enough to spend more time on Kauai in the future.

Yelp
Comparable quality to jojos. Organic and regular syrup choices. Good shave texture and flavor combos

Yelp
Located behind the food trucks on the main drag in Hanalei resides the Wishing Well. Breakfast spot with açaí bowls, smoothies, coffee, and hand pressed juices. Tried out a couple of their bowls and each was made with the strategic placement of fruit and toppings. Really like how each açaí place we visit will rearrange and design their bowls and both tasted just as good as they looked. Open early which is a benefit to parents with kids that seem to wake up with the rising sun.

Yelp
I purchased the Hanalei Sweetie. I found it to be lacking in flavor and didn't like it. However, my daughter's rainbow shaved ice? The next time I come here, I will definitely order what she had. The staff was pleasant and hospitable. Despite the long line, the service was quick. Be aware that the tables are extremely filthy. It's recommended to bring some wipes or eat in your car!
