Everything is delicious! The dumplings were really good but next time i would get fried. The eggplant in garlic sauce and fried rice were both great too

Simple Chinese food, quick service, well priced, and filling! Exactly what we were looking for. The sweet and sour pork was a bit more batter than we would prefer, but it was still tasty. Be aware this is cash only!

The food was good for the price, not the best Chinese I've had, but the portions are huge and shareable. The egg rolls were massive and really good. This place also only takes cash.

The resturant was fantastic, they get people in and out quick and the seating is cozy, if you don't like being in a basement, then it may not be the place for you. The service was great and they filled our drinks fast. The food came out quick and was fresh, definitely some of the best Chinese food i have ever had. Would definitely recommend to anyone near China town!

They claim to be the same as the wo hop downstairs but the atmosphere and service were different. Food was good. Duck wonton was very bony and was gard to separate. The LoMein had a lot of soy sauce already in it. Why are there still cash only restaurants in 2024?

Still a Chinatown gem after all these years. Came here today with my girlfriend and we ordered 3 dishes: Crabs Cantonese, Razor Clams, and Braised Fish Fillet with Egg Tofu. All dishes were delicious and portions were pretty good. Service is super friendly and attentive, some of the best staff in Chinatown. As a rule of thumb with all restaurants, you need to know what to order here since their menu is humongous, but generally you can't go wrong with their seafood or stir fried noodle options. Will be back soon!

Very nice staff, and very nice food! We ordered a lot of our Chinese food favorites, and it all came out in a timely manner. The egg rolls are to die for, and we also got shrimp fried rice, sesame chicken, beef lo men, shrimp chow ho fun -- so. good. The workers seemed to enjoy our sticky note we left on the table :)

Amazing service! All the wait staff were attentive and very nice! They kept filling our water glasses and clearing the table. Beef brisket casserole: I was expecting it to be in a pot instead of a plate. But the beef was tender. The dish was not oily or heavy. I love the tofu sheets. The beef brisket casserole is tender enough that I think my Dad with dentures can eat it. And it's not too salty because we all have high blood pressure. Salt and pepper capelin: fried fish with roe. It's perfectly seasoned. Better than at Jing Fong. And the fish was a good size. It's pretty addictive. I ate the roe, the flesh and the head. I just removed the spine. They give you bowls to put your bones. Peapod leaves: young peapod leaves--nothing fibrous. Not too salty. Crispy garlic chicken: chicken was not dry. I like the crispy skin. Crab and fish maw soup: I found it a little too watery and a bit bland. But you can put the red vinegar or a little bit of white pepper to taste. Fried tofu: the tofu bricks were longer than other restaurants. Other restaurants are more square. Dip the brick in soy sauce. Seafood pan fried noodles: a mix of squid, scallops, 1-2 shrimp, fish cake, baby bok choy, mushrooms, and carrots. I like the noodles to be a bit more crispy but it was still delicious. I do like that the dishes were not too oily or salty. The place is usually crowded but we got lucky with a large table on a snowy night. Bathrooms are downstairs. Small stalls but very clean.

As someone who has lived in NYC forever it wasn't until recently that I learned there were 2 Wo Hop locations, the one downstairs with the crazy long lines which apparently serves American Chinese food, and the one upstairs which is the notably emptier "hidden gem" serving actual Cantonese Chinese food. The interior has a 90s Asian diner feel with booth tables, slightly rough around the edges and definitely not built for the modern day instagrammable aesthetics. But nonetheless, the food here blew me away (as a fellow Cantonese, you can maybe? trust my word for it). The standout dishes include the Cantonese style stir-fried lobster (market price) which came with generous toppings of ground pork and scrambled egg. This dish leans Toisanese than proper Cantonese, but it is excellent, has superior Wok Hay (iykyk) and lobster is fresh. The other favorite I've tried was the roasted squab ("siu yuu gap"), which is a small bird that is the size of a Cornish hen but the gaminess and dark meat texture of a duck. This dish exceeded all my expectations, crispy skin, perfectly seasoned all the way through, and tasted as good as they make it back in Asia. We also got some seafood stirfried noodles (not my fave, the noodles were too mushy), crispy salt roasted chicken (pretty good), and some squash with fried fish filet (unique and worth trying). I'd definitely come back here for the roasted squab alone. Last note: Cash Only. So you know it's the real deal.

I usually go to the other WoHop but as usual the line was too long. So we decided to try Wo Hop next door. Food was fresh & tasty! Had salt & pepper squid, duck chow fun & string beans with minced pork. All the food was great! Will be back!

Wo Hop is one of my favorite places in NYC. Tonight, I thought I would try the Wo Hop Next Door. I had an excellent meal, and I have nothing but nice things to say about everything. The menu seemed to be a little different, but not enough to matter... and, I'm sure everything is just as good as Wo Hop downstairs. Just because of the history, I like going to the downstairs one better. If you don't feel like waiting in line though, go to Wo Hop Next Door.

Yum. So nostalgic. Came here with a large group post-run club and we ate our hearts out. Everything on the menu is good and service is quick. If I had to choose a favorite dish it would be either the eggplant or duck.

Had a celebratory farewell dinner at Wo Hop Next Door with my European friends accompanied by their small dog. They had selected it, plus the downstairs original Wo Hop was recognized in '22 by James Beard Foundation as an "American Classic." (Because of our canine company, we needed street shed seating.) Keep in mind, during the last 50 or so years the range of Chinese cuisine available in the US has evolved, offering a wider selection of regional cuisines, more intense flavors including spicier, and broader ingredients. Wo Hop Next Door is what I'd classify as a reasonably priced, Cantonese restaurant with some specialties and a mid-Century Chinese American offering, without the Chop Suey, where the flavors are more muted than robust. We each ordered an entree, plus a Bok Choi side for the table. All came with different brown sauces. Recognizing there may be some difference between the original and Next Door's offering, the food was definitely a throwback to decades past, bringing to mind the Chinese food from my childhood when any Chinese food you could find was considered "exotic," so I can appreciate why James Beard categorized the original Wo Hop as a "classic." Diners may need to adjust their expectations because in comparing Wo Hop Next Door to Szechuan, Hunan, Anhui, Lanzhou, Xi'an or other contemporary restaurants they could be disappointed. That being said, it was a great meal together. To me, the best of the Wo Hop Next Door 3 mains was the Wor Shu Duck served on a normal plate vs plastic take out containers for everything else. The duck shined through its brown sauce. The Beef Young Sing Chow Fun had more vegetables and not as many noodles as I've had elsewhere with regular Beef Chow Fun. While I'm not a Lo Mein fan, my friend who ordered the beef one enjoyed it the best. Keeping the original Wo Hop in the basement on my bucket list, I'll eventually try it, where would opt for roast pork and maybe a fish or shrimp dish... definitely something more vibrant. Given exposure to what's available today, though, my (and my family's) tastebuds require more. That being said, there are so many options in Chinatown including new ones to explore and my other personal favorites that my return won't be any time soon, but I expect others may find Wo Hop Next Door more their cup of tea. FYI - Wo Hop Next Door is cash only.

Wo Hop has two locations, the original being the downstairs restaurant that serves American-style Chinese and Wo Hop Next Door which serves Cantonese style dishes. We tried going to the restaurant downstairs but they recommended us to go next door if we wanted more traditional Cantonese dishes. They have a menu in traditional Chinese and in English, with a few items missing in the English. You are able to get most(all?) of the dishes from downstairs, but we decided against that. Service was provided by traditional Chinese waiters who were knowledgeable and personable. We ordered some duck, beef with vegetables and a seafood tofu dish. All were excellent, but the duck was exceptionally crispy and the tofu had all the right flavors. Would definitely come back again!

Old school Cantonese in the heart of Chinatown. Go downstairs for American Chinese food, but if you want something more authentically Cantonese, "next door" is the choice. They also have the American Chinese menu served downstairs, so you can get the best of both worlds here. The servers were all very friendly and chatty. Food took quite a while to arrive but it's a Saturday night, and they were packed. Food's solid Cantonese fare. Are they the best in Chinatown? No, but with the long hours this is a great choice in the Chinatown area, with something for everyone.

Aside from being cash only this is a good location for Chinese. I'm hoping to find better in China town but currently this is the only option that I'd select so far. Fresh, flavorful, quantity is typically good even though my fried rice was half the size of the other plates that came out., If I were to try anything else, I'd probably not order the fried rice to try the pan fried noodles. Service has been great any time I go there.

In my opinion, the food didn't taste good. I ordered the jumbo shrimp and chicken and it was way too salty. I would not come back here.

Wo hop next door has just about the same menu as wo hop The wait today at the OH was well over an hour while next door had a 15 min wait. Food is solid but the service has gone down hill over the years. Ambiance is slightly better than the basement dungeon next door but not nearly the eye candy on the walls. Cash only....still

Definitely better than Joe's Shanghai, did not wow me but I would return when in NYC again. I had the pork fried rice, egg rolls, and beef with Chinese vegetables. I liked the food, the only thing is that the beef was thick sliced and I prefer my beef sliced thin. It's just lazy to cut it so thick and made me question the origin of the meat. I left most of it uneaten.

Apparently this is like the first Chinese restaurant in Chinatown I think. It was good, not the best. Service was the best I've ever experienced at a local authentic Chinese restaurant, not sure if because I was with older Asians or not lol. Anywho, we ordered a ton of food & the portion sizes were massive. Egg rolls were huge & so were dumplings. Leftovers lasted 2 days! I will say the vegetable fried rice I ordered was really delicious. I say check it out if you're looking to support an original Chinese restaurant with good food & hefty menu. Go, enjoy

Wo Hop is one of the oldest (and more notable) restaurants on Mott Street, and it has the crowds to match. Looking for a table on a rainy Friday night, my friend and I ducked into Wo Hop's neighboring space: Wo Hop Next Door. Like most spots on Mott, the menu is Americanized Chinese, mainly Cantonese with a few Szechuan specialities added. We split a large roast pork wonton soup, steamed dumplings, and General Tso's chicken. The soup was bright and satisfying, with a subtle ginger flavour pairing well with the roast pork. The massive dumplings were tender and, surprising for the size, not doughy. The chicken was on point: crisp with a lighter than usual sauce.

Very, very good Cantonese food in New York's Chinatown. Our family was visiting New York for the Christmas holiday and wanted to make a pilgrimage down to Chinatown. There are two Wo Hops, one down some stairs in a basement, and the other just down the street at street level, which is the one we went to. As I understand it, they share common ownership, but have separate kitchens. I am a big fan of hot and sour soup, and order it virtually every time that it's available. It was an excellent version (I've had it all over the country). It had a nice sweetness, with just the right amount of bite. We ordered communal plates of General Tso's chicken, Szechuan shrimp, and Singapore fried rice noodles. The portions here are very large and, even with four of us, we took almost half of it with us. The General Tso's chicken was very tender, with a nice crispy crust. The Singapore rice noodles, one of my all-time favorites, was excellent. It is fried rice noodles, egg, bean sprouts, green pepper, and shrimp, stir-fried in oil and given a liberal dusting of curry powder. The Szechuan shrimp was also very good, with strong, but not overpowering heat. The service was prompt and efficient. I should note that English seemed to be a second language for most of the wait staff, so it was helpful to use the menu to show what we wanted. I don't know if its the usual practice there, but they only took cash night the night we dined. I would certainly recommend this place, and will be sure to stop in again when I'm next in NYC.

Old school Chinese joint in the middle of NYC chinatown. How old school you ask? They're cash only. You get water and hot tea once seated. We came in around 5 pm and the place wasn't too busy. Our food came out in about 10 mins. I had the beef with Chinese mushrooms. I like how the beef is cut thick. It was pretty soft as well and not chewy at all. Mushrooms were nicely cooked while the brown sauce was pretty nondescript. It did it's job tying everything together but the flavor was pretty mellow. My wife had the roast pork with vegetables. So glad this dish wasn't sweet at all. Though I wish there were more meat than veggies. AMPLE amount of white rice with both dishes. For under $8 each, you will definitely leave full. Give this place a try if you're in the area.

I knew exactly what I wanted before I got there. It was the same food I would order from my local Chinese Restaurant in the late 1970s early 1980s, in Queens, NY. We have Been craving and searching high and low for authentic American "Old School" Chinese Food on Long Island since the 1990s, (only thing that came close was The Orchard in Garden City).Wo Hop exceeded my expectations. Enjoyed the no frills unaltered decor, the ambiance is in the food and the staff. We were listening and watching many of the non NYers try and understand the menu choices. As soon as the waiter appeared, I sounded off my order like a drill sergeant. Wonton Egg Drop Soup, Egg Rolls, Roast pork Fried Rice, Spare ribs, and Sweet and Sour Chicken all White meat, please. A Diet Coke and some ice for the hot tea, thanks. Oh yeah don't forget those crispy noodles, with the hot mustard and homemade duck sauce. We blinked and out came the soup along with golden crispy egg rolls, it was what I earning for so long. The duck sauce and mustard arrived without the noodles, the waitstaff quickly brought them to the table without missing a beat. The wontons drenched in the egg drop, was so savory and flavorful. The roast pork fried rice appeared and the sweet and sour chicken right behind. As soon as I thought they forgot the ribs, bam, they were on the table still sizzling. As we tore through the food like savages, we recalled our days growing up in Queens. How could one meal spark such pleasure? Only thing is they do not offer, lunch specials that are popular on most menus. CASH ONLY. It's truly a NYC attraction and must experience visit.

Came her for a quick lunch while in Chinatown...menu had a big variety of food to select from soup, noodles, rice, fried rice, poultry, seafood, beef, spicy dishes etc. Food comes out pretty quick after ordering which was good, especially when limited on time to eat. Decent size portion for lunch. Had the roast pork with vegetables over rice... a bit much on the sauce, but overall was good. Hot tea to wash it down and stay warm. Fortune cookie with the bill. Menus - they have separate menus in English and in Chinese. Note: This place is cash only... so make sure to bring cash with you.

There was 4 of us a the bill was $81. I ate right next door last week at Noodle Village the food was amazing and the price was excellent so go next door to Noodle Village skip Wo Hop it's a rip off. As not to be confused with Wo Hop the basement restaurant next door.

I had to visit NY for a personal matter however I decided to head down to Chinatown to get some authentic Chinese food. I was shocked to discover that Wo Hop which is name that inspired this restaurant line was packed due to the place no longer open for 24 hours. So me and my sister decided to go next door. Please note the original & this restaurant is CASH ONLY. There is an ATM machine in the front to withdraw cash. We were seated immediately and were given water and hot tea free of charge. The food options were good however they are limited to compared to next door the original Wo Hop restaurant. My sister got the shrimp egg foo young with her starter being pork egg rolls. According to my sister I don't eat pork she said the roll was dry and filled with cabbage instead of it having a better balance of meat in it. I got the steamed veggie dumpling which was really good. My entree was beef and broccoli which was good. Our other guest got the shrimp fried rice which looked amazing.

A friend recommended this place and it didn't disappoint. Very tight space but the food was excellent. Make sure you bring cash.

I have been going to this same Chinese restaurant in Chinatown since I was a little girl & it's a family tradition. I enjoy it & now my boys enjoy it just as much as I do. I've had the pleasure to have taken many people there with me when visiting & im grateful to my brother in law for having been the one that took us there years ago & still to this day we continue to enjoy the authentic Chinese food that you can get here. The Wonton soup is soo tasty, and the wontons are not to thick or thin, they are just the right size & thickness & the meat inside is soo tasty!!! We always enjoy eating family style when we go here! And of course don't forget to enjoy the hot tea that you will automatically get!!

Classic chinatown restaurant with very fair prices. The food is good, the portions are gigantic, and you'll most likely leave with leftovers. It was tough making a choice on where to eat in the street, but this restaurant was very busy, on a weekday, so we played the safe card, and it worked out great - I would go back, but I wouldn't go for the fried dumplings.

For my son's birthday I took him out for a joy walk in the city. He's mostly a Long Island suburban kid who has been to plenty of Queens and Nassau county Chinese restaurants but never in Chinatown Manhattan. We stopped Wo Hop Next door which is right above from the famous basement WoHop that attracts tons of tourists. My son told me this place is trending lol. We ordered half a roast duck and a chicken broccoli. While eating my boy suddenly outbursted without discretion, "dad how come this Chinese restaurant is entirely white people"??? Hahahha I burst out laughing but also feeling embarrassed. I told him, son you've gotta learn social cues and lower your voice. But you are right this place attracts a lot of tourists which is why local here usually come eating after 7pm to avoid the crowd. We've enjoyed a good time here especially with my boy's childish natural hilarious stunt haha! I do recommend this famous historical tourist magnet for a quick delicious meal of American Chinese food fast with friendly service.

At Wo Hop Next Door, we indulged in a feast of authentic, clean-tasting Chinese dishes. Our picks included the fried rice with chicken, squid with black bean and garlic sauce, lo mein, sesame chicken, egg drop soup, fried dumplings, and wontons. Despite the hour-long wait and cash-only policy, every bite was worth it, making for an unforgettable dining experience. Next time we'll get more sesame chicken so we don't finish it so fast!

Love this place. The tea comes out hot and fast, which was great for a cold night. The egg drop Soup with wonton was so big. The noodles with roast duck also hit the spot for a cold winter night. The best dish was the shrimp chow fun. The noodles came out steaming and full of flavor. They also have some of the best prices you'll find in nyc.

I have been frequenting this restaurant for years. The quality has been steadily declining since the covid pandemic. I just recently ordered an order of their snails and 75% of the order was rotten. Take caution if you want to choose this dish.

Since the 70's a staple. Cool old school vibe! If you went to Chinese restaurants in china town in the 70's-90's then you know. Awesome seating- not a bad seat in the house. We sat at a community table which- if you're a New Yorker, is super ok! I've taken people here for decades and have never needed to wait... the food is traditional and fantastic. And fast! The lo mein is perfect. The soup rules. And the egg rolls are the same size they were 30 years ago, HUGE. Literally twice the size anywhere else. While portions are shrinking around Manhattan & BK china town reigns supreme. And always a bunch to take home. The Chinese mustard is no joke, really! Don't go crazy like with the stuff that comes in the little plastic bags form you local delivery. It's powerful! And I love it. It's so good it Will clear your sinuses and the people next to you lmao. Enjoy!

Came here with a group of friends for dinner on a Friday evening. I believe this is an extension of the original Wo Hop a few shops down the block. Regardless, they must serve the same food right? We were able to be seated a few minutes upon arriving around 8pm. We ordered a slew of food and shared it amongst the group. Fried Dumplings ($8.50) and Steamed Dumplings ($8) are pretty standard, but make great appetizers. Walnut Shrimp ($25) is one of the highlights. Salt & Pepper Pork Chop is delicious. Cantonese Chow Mein w Chicken ($13), another hit. I think you're seeing a pattern here. You can't go wrong with any of these choices. And man, we all left satisfied and ready for wherever the night took us.

After Nom Wah Tea Parlor, Wo Hop meaning harmony is the 2nd oldest establishment in NYC's Chinatown. In 1976, they opened their second location, Wo Hop Next Door which does not share a kitchen with the "downstairs" where my partner, my mom and I stumbled in for lunch at 25 Mott Street today. They are a cash-only operation. Upon arrival at this quiet relaxed setting, don't expect fancy seats or fancy treatments here. Not sure if they take reservations but for a while we had the restaurant to ourselves. The menu in English or Chinese is a roster of the classic Cantonese cuisine such as egg foo young, lo mein, fried rice with pork, chicken or shrimp, sweet & pungent (sour) chicken, crispy egg rolls, and much more. Meals began with glasses of ice water and hot tea for the table. We ordered Crispy Fried Chicken (Half), Beef Chow Fun with beef slices stir-fried with soft, springy rice noodles then seasoned with soy sauce, Fried Chicken with Mixed Vegetables (carrots, bok choy and green peppers) in a brown sauce, and a dish with pork belly. The dishes came out fresh and were authentic, delicious, with generous portion sizes. Service was good. Prices were very competitive compared to other Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown. It was a nice experience without the craziness of having the staff running around or the high noise level which we could recommend this place.

We've been coming to Wo Hop and Hop Kee for 35 years with our parents. Usually great and attentive service. Because of CoVid, we went to the larger Wo Hop, next door. I asked the waiter if the flounder ($28) on the menu was pan fried and he said yes, came out breaded and fried- not spicy. The Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce ($14) barely had any oyster sauce on it (smaller portion), but the special fried rice was as delicious as it'd had always been. The place was half as busy as I remember it always to be, but so was Chinatown as a whole. Hopefully their service staff just had an off night. They're usually really friendly and present. Wish the experience was better, will return as it's a staple and one of our favorites.

I ordered off the menu - vegetable curry chow fun excellent. Hit the spot. Excellent curry seasoning, large bowl of noodles, veggies and and sauce. Service excellent. Prompt, courteous, efficient. The ambience was quiet. It was mid afternoon between lunch and dinner. I enjoyed my chow fun in peace.

Stepped into this restaurant after all the other places we wanted to go to were packed. We were all starving after walking around the city and didn't want to wait in long lines. Luckily Motts st has a ton of places to eat. We were seated right away towards the back to accommodate the 5 of us. The ambiance was your typical Chinatown experience. You're there to eat. Our server was quick and attentive. We ordered a few dishes for us to share. We started with dumplings and egg rolls. Dumplings were huge and packed with meat. Egg rolls were freshly fried and hot. Both great tasting to quench our hunger. Then came our meals. Pork fried rice, chicken lo mein and moo goo gai pan. Big portions and delicious! Everything had the perfect balance of flavor. Not overly seasoned with salt or oily which I've eaten before at other Chinese restaurants. This hit the spot and we were all happy we came here. We never felt pressure to eat quickly and enjoyed ourselves. Cash only.

My family and I usually come into Chinatown for Wo Hop, but we decided to try Wo Hop Next Door and we're so happy we did. This might be our new favorite place. The dishes were delicious! Prices were surprisingly reasonable. Service was excellent. Very attentive. Constantly refilled our waters. Nice and quiet atmosphere. Perfect for a Sunday lunch. The food came out very quickly and there was plenty left over to take home. Very happy we stopped by. We'll definitely be back.

Cash only* Food was bland. Service never checked on me once during the meal. Amazing since there was only 4 people in the place. Pricey for amount of food and it wasn't that good. Especially considering the neighborhood. There are much better options in the neighborhood. But if you're starving and can't wait it will do I suppose... First and last for me though....

Wo Hop had a line out to the corner so we headed next door for the first time. Not impressed. It was below average Chinese. Next time I'll stand on line for the original.

The most important thing you need to know is that this place only accepts cash. The menu is filled with typical American Chinese cuisine. There is nothing fancy about the ambience unless you consider red vinyl booths with formica tables fancy. I arrived at about 9:15 and the place was very busy. Most of the tables had their food and left well before 10:00 which was closing time. I ordered the beef with pea pods and the roasted pork Lo Mein. I also asked for no MSG. The waiter told me they would have to make these dishes "special" for me. Another family came in 10 minutes after I ordered and received their food within 15 minutes. I watched them eat the four dishes they ordered for another 10 minutes before my beef with pea pods arrived. It took another 10 minutes before I received the Lo Mein. Both of the dishes were excellent. The meat was tender and flavorful. The vegetables were crisp tender and the sauces were on point and not too salty. Overall I would recommend this place except for the wait for the food.

I thought this restaurant's offerings were uneven. The egg rolls and dumplings were not really tasty, but the boneless duck with mushrooms and the vegetable fried rice were good. I was shocked that the duck did not come with any side of white rice or anything. No oranges with the fortune cookies. They have good waiter service.

You know the food at Chinese restaurant is going to be good when the first thing you see when you walk in is a restaurant full of primarily Chinese people eating there. I ordered their house special fried rice, pork dumpling soup and an egg roll. All were some of the best Chinese food that I have had in a long time.

Cash only but has other things to offer than the original Wo hop quick convenience open all hours take it to go or stay but be sure to enjoy

Food was alright just the appetizer came out after the dry roast duck and we ordered Chinese rice for two but only got one I think it was a language barrier my wife can soda ginger al which was flat we didn't understand that and it was line inside looking at you eating waiting for you to get up! Remember cash only and me being disabled the bathroom downstairs was a problem! No parking outside unless you pay at a garage around the corner
