The food is pretty solid. I will need to give it a second try. Got the beef lo mein and chicken phad Thai. Spent $40 with a tip. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way from a customer perspective was when I asked for an additional to-go box I was met with strange resistance. I know the cost to run a business are currently high as I run several but I still would put the customer experience first.

Ordered through Uber eats. I wanted to add broccoli to my order, the person working was kind enough to call and ask me if I was willing for the $4 up charge for broccoli, I went for it and was pretty disappointed when it showed up with 5 pieces of broccoli. $1 for a piece of broccoli + a bonus one I suppose. General tso sauce is typically pretty thick and coats the protein and veggies but this one was like watery sweet and sour sauce. Food honestly was bad, watery overly sweet sauce, tough chicken. Fried rice did not smell good, tasted just ok. Sad cause I remember ordering a noodle dish here about a year ago and it blowing me out of the water. I know I’m gonna get scammed a bit when ordering Uber eats but to pay upwards of $60 and walk away unsatisfied is just a bad time. Won’t be spending money here again.

Google
The food here was amazing, I have always overlooked it because I thought it was just a convenience store but stopped by in a pinch and it was great. I highly recommend the chicken lo mein.

Google
If I could eat the bowl I would. Tons of novelty snacks and drinks inside, I was able to pair this with a delicious Thai Tea. Everything was made fresh and tasted better when it was hot, very excited to eat this tomorrow I feel like it’ll be even better then

Google
Nice people , kind of frustrating delivery experience. Sweet and sour chicken not really what I expected but that’s on me .., chicken was very chewy.. seemed like mostly fatty dark cuts which personally isn’t really my thing.Decent fried rice but I paid and extra 3 to add pork and didn’t get any. The regular fried rice was decent and I liked the dumplings ( they are more like mini dumplings hence the price but still good) Main issue was an hour after I ordered I checked the tracker to see where the food was and it was marked as delivered. I called and they told me they never sent or made the food and apologized. They did throw in some veggie egg rolls to make up for it and the food arrived about 10 minutes after I called but the gesture was somewhat negated by the missing item. Might try it again for take out , probably skip the delivery and fried chicken dishes tho .

Google
I came here for the first time for some late night noms this evening and was blown away by the whole experience. The service was super friendly and prompt, the food was phenomenal! I genuinely felt like the quality was was way beyond just simple Asian takeout fare. You definitely get your bang for your buck here, and without a doubt I will be back for more :)

Google
Place is well priced, and it hits the spot for westernized Chinese food. General Tso had onions and pineapple, which I found strange at first; but made sense when I ate it. My new go to spot in that area.

Google
First time ordering the Mongolian Chicken - it was a bit too salty, but otherwise the ingredients were fresh & the amount of spicy-heat was good. NOTE: This picture is one of a takeout order which I then mixed 1 cup of my own homemade white rice into, using my own black plate.

Yelp
I was extremely hesitant to order from here at first, seeing that it's Asian food mixed into a convenience store. However, my expectations were blown away. I ordered a basic Sesame Chicken with fried rice. The food was not only good, but the portion sizes were amazing for the amount that I paid (roughly $10.5). The chicken had a nice crispy breading with a tender inside, and the fried rice had a nice, simple flavor. The sauce that bathed the chicken was full of flavor as well. I will definitely be back here to try more things. You're basically getting 2 meals with one order, quick service, and above average food.

Yelp
Their crab rangoons are to die for! My bestie and I used to come here during work and just buy 24 of them and eat them while running rooms at the escape room up the road. They were normally pretty nice. But they would regularly lie and say they didn't have sweet and sour sauce but that's okay lol
google avatar

Vizslas D.

Yelp
Authentic Chinese food and family. Unfortunately, the fried rice and all proteins were very bland. They also need to update their online menu prices -- much higher than stated. I may try out a traditional entrée to see if any better than the fried rice.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
Food was good, fast service, wouldn't say it is the best Chinese food but is good quick food. Has a liquor section inside the shop which was funny
google avatar

Charli V.

Yelp
Just a quick bite while I'm on a lunch break! This is a cute mom and pop shop. most of the restaurants In this area are. It duals as a mini Asian convenience store selling dipping/cooking sauces, Knick knacks, snacks, wine, beer. You can even grab a lighter or a lottery ticket here! I quickly ordered a sesame chicken entree. My order was ready in less then 5 minutes! I paid $9.XX Including tax. The portion was decent but I wasn't impressed with the chicken itself. Flavors were not there. The menu is somewhat extensive but I'd be weary about quality due to low volume. However, I'd like to support small businesses so when I'm around again, I'll try another item!

Yelp
Probably my new favorite Chinese takeout place. Food tastes warm and fresh, and you get a great amount for the price. I stop in every few weeks.

Yelp
Just Bcz it has a 4 or 5 star means it's great. Their General Chicken was burnt like a Mexican Carnitas. Only thing I can speak about is the General Chicken. Do not recommend this plate. Sorry but i expect better Chinese food for $14.00

Yelp
This is my first coming to this establishment. It was everything I expected it to be! Except for the curry combination fried rice, and the combination fried rice. To me the combination fried rice was a bit too sweet for my liking. I'm used to a more soy taste than sugar. The curry fried rice tasted like curry. No salt. No pepper. Just curry. I also had the potsticker (so crunchy and so good ;p); crab rangoon (can't mess those up); spring rolls (CHEF KISS)!! The POTSTICKER SAUCE IS TO DIE FOR!!! Other than the sweet rice and curry. This place is a delight!!

Yelp
discovered this location about a year ago. food is great and the employees are very friendly. Love the curry chicken fried rice. It has a great spicy taste to it. I've tried other dishes and have been satisfied with everything so far.

Miana T.

Yelp
The curry fried rice doesn't really taste like curry but it was still decent fried rice. I may have to just try another dish. The price and the portion size is pretty solid though which I appreciate.
google avatar

Wendy K.

Yelp
The portions are huge. We have ordered late before and they always deliver on time. I have picked it up. The fried rice is huge and wonton soup was delicious.
google avatar

Omar M.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service. Their fried rice is good, but IMO their Orange Chicken was on the extra chewy side. Interesting little establishment since it's both a fast food Chinese restaurant and a convenience store.
google avatar

John Royal Priesthood N.

Yelp
I've visit the establishment for quite awhile. The food has always been very good. Today was exceptionally good.
google avatar

Cameron N.

Yelp
It's a friendly little mom and pop shop. They had my pick up order ready upon entering, but I don't think I'd return as the food was only alright. I wanted to like it, but I didn't feel like the place was very maintained or clean
google avatar

Yelp
I would not have survived college without the existence of Wok N Express. They have influenced my college career and life for the better. I graduated from college almost nine years ago and I still think about Wok N Express on the daily... that's how good this place is!!! Influenced and impacted my life for the better forever.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place go every week, open during crisis. Big help. The curry rice is particularly good with broccoli and spring rolls. seasame chicken is also well done.

Amy F.

Yelp
The Chicken Pad Thai is delicious. I got it extra spicy and they met that . Glad we found this spot.
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
This place is fast and whoever cooks the food in the back genuinely cares about what he is putting out. All of the tofu meals are so bomb. I don't know any other restaurant that makes their tofu this good. Also one meal is enough to last you like half the day because they give you so much food.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
This is an interesting spot. In addition to Chinese and Thai food they also sell 6pks and wine. You cannot consume alcohol on the premises but if you get takeout you can conveniently pick up some drinks at the same time. I had the sesame seed chicken, which was cooked nicely, decent sized chunks of chicken, and the rice was perfect. I like that they offer crab rangoon in small portions, 2 per order. However, be sure to ask for duck sauce cause they did not give me any by default. I will try this place again.

Yelp
Dank AF. Absolute gem if you want authentic Chinese/Vietnamese-style comfort food in the Austin area

Adam K.

Yelp
I haven't had too many items from their menu, but they have amazing fried rices. They are always quick and good value. I drove by it so many times without trying it, but I'm so glad I ordered from them. I'm adding it to my rotation.
google avatar

Yelp
I paid $12 for a rice curry bowl with shrimp and beef. It had about 3 pieces of beef and like 2 pieces of shrimp....but a TON of rice!! If you LOVE rice and want to pay $12 for a bowl of rice, this place is for you. If you want a meal with beef and shrimp that is filling or hearty, go somewhere else.

Amber Y.

Yelp
This is absolutely the best Chinese food in Austin. I've tried other places and they just don't compare! The flavor is always spot on, they quality of the ingredients is great, the portions of food are more than adequate, and the price is unbeatable. I'm sorry to all other Chinese restaurants, but Wok n Express will always be my favorite! I usually get it once a week and I have yet to be disappointed. Love you Wok n Express!!
google avatar

Ngan T.

Yelp
I get delivery from this place so often, it would scare you to know the number. Some things I've learned? Definitely get the salt and pepper squid. If you're not a fan of squid, try the shrimp because they use the same flavors--delicious. The dumplings are also pretty good but specify whether you want then pan fried of steamed. The other surprising winner is the wonton soup. The wontons are actually well seasoned with a good portion of shrimp filling. Also, if you're craving the traditional Chinese sausage in your fried rice, they have it here! The crab rangoons aren't too shabby but you need to specify you'd like sweet and sour sauce. I actually didn't like most of the other recommendations yelpers have made. The lemongrass chicken isn't the flavorful Vietnamese version I expected, rather it's a lazy stir fry that's more spice than flavor. The general and sesame chicken are just too sweet. The lo mein is usually ok. I have mixed feelings on the pad Thai. It has a hybrid taste which isn't necessarily bad but definitely not what you usually expect when ordering the dish. Also, the curry is more of an Indian curry than Thai curry. Great...writing this review at 7:30am makes me want to reorder dinner.

Yelp
The neighbourhood finally has a place for inexpensive, take-out Chinese fast food, thanks to Wok 'n Express! Not gourmet cuisine, but quite good for what it is. A pleasant surprise that their meat is neither fatty nor gristly, the vegetables are fresh and the orange and sesame chicken sauces aren't cloyingly sweet or overly gloopy. Some dishes are better than others. I'm not crazy about the General Tso's chicken. A few of things, like the mongolian beef, can be a tad salty. I like their lemongrass chicken, spicy tofu and salt & pepper shrimp. Their hot & sour soup is also good, with a generous amount of soft tofu, bamboo shoots and wood ear fungus mixed in. I'll order from the buffet if I'm there for lunch between 11:00 and 11:20 am, when the steam table items have just come out from the kitchen. Otherwise, I'll order from the menu. Because, by say 7:30 pm, the steam table items look icky and unappetizing. Just how long has stuff been sitting out there? From the menu, entree portions are pricier but you get slightly better quality food along with a nice amount of steamed white rice.

Yelp
I have been a fan of Wok N Express for a long time. I love that they have extended hours. Their Egg drop soup is the best I have had in this city. My favorite dishes are the Brussel sprouts, either lemon or salt'n'pepper. It is awesome. Their fried rice is also very good. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but I have not been disappointed ever. They are reasonably priced as well. I moved down south about 3 years ago and so I don't make it up there nearly as often as I would like, but this place has pretty great Chinese food. Do yourself a favor and call ahead so the food is ready when you get there. This place is worth your patronage if you are looking for Chinese food, especially if you live in the area.
google avatar

Rylan M.

Yelp
A godsend. Their extra spicy Curry Tofu Fried Rice is my sustenance. Tofu spring rolls and peanut sauce are highly recommended too. They even opened during the winter storm disaster to serve the community.
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
I love this place! I usually go for a spicy pad Thai and it's always surpassed my expectations. All I have to say is go here (or call ahead, don't eat there lol take it to go) and enjoy!
google avatar

Martha L.

Yelp
Look when I crave Chinese I hardly ever go for it. One is because I don't want to be eating from not actual Chinese eatery. I have to say for this area it's a really cool place more of a small liquor store and just Chinese restaurant. We had bought the veggie lo mein noodles, tso chicken with fried rice and on the side we also bought crab rangoons with egg rolls. Everything was quick, fresh, hot food they had just whipped up. I really don't like lo mein, But this was definitely a win. I think it was with all the good bite size veggies in it. Chicken is crunchy with a spicy glaze sauce, but it wasn't at all spicy for me, if you are tempted to try. We definitely had half of everything as left overs. It was too much, I ended up handing it over to a homeless man. So, the night ended great.
google avatar

Jessika W.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Looks like a place you would normally pass up but looks are definitely deceiving when it comes to this place. Their egg drop soup is so good and seasoned so well I seriously ordered it again the next day. they also have wines and convenient store items. but overall, yup it's delicious!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Completely predictable and average American Chinese food (and thus three stars), but I like Wok N Express for their bodega-like setup where you can get a six pack, bottle of wine, and a few other staples to go with your food order. The people are nice - I think it's a family-run operation. There's a surprising dearth of Chinese food options near UT campus and this place is an oasis when you're really craving that kind of comfort food. Orders usually come out fast so it's easy to just drop by rather than call in your order. Thumbs up!

Jon F.

Yelp
Wok always has my food ready quickly, is very decently priced, and consistently serves me great meals. support the boys
google avatar

Ian G.

Yelp
Chicken Lo Mein was pretty good. Orange Chicken was awful. I'll try another Chinese restaurant.
google avatar

Taco B.

Yelp
All in all I like this place. It's your standard American Chinese food. They mix it up with curried fried rice and they have Chinese sausage too. Since it's a quasi convenience store they've got beer, wine, and whatnot. Not always well stocked though. If you're in the neighborhood and in the mood for Chinese food I recommend you give them a try!

Zach S.

Yelp
Excellent food for a reasonable price. Delivery is always prompt, even on busy nights. If you're around the Hyde Park area, this place should be a no-brainer. I've been getting delivery from this place for years. They have yet to disappoint. Give them a try!
google avatar

Courtney R.

Yelp
I'm new to Austin so I'm searching for the go to Chinese take out spot for those last minute late night meals. I came across this location through yelp. I ordered sesame chicken and general tso's and both were really fresh and very flavorful! Between two people the food portion size was good for dinner for one night. Definitely not enough if your looking to have left overs (and I don't even eat a lot ). Sesame chicken is good for those that like sweet chicken and general tso's is great for those who like mild spice on their chicken. I would definitely visit this place again!
google avatar

Yelp
Wok N Express has excellent standard fare Chinese food and is open late, untill 11:00. I've been there twice, and I found their food delicious, their portions generous, and their prices quite reasonable. As most of their business seems to be take away, the decor is rather minimal (the restaurant is housed in a converted convenience store). They do have several tables for customers like me, who would prefer to dine in. The 5 star rating is for their food, I won't ding them for the decor. Service is likewise no frills; you place your order at the register, and then they call your name when the food is ready. They serve everything in styrofoam containers, even if you dine in. The restaurant seems to be (I did not confirm this) a family-run business, and the ladies behind the counter are friendly. I've had both the vegetable egg rolls and the crab rangoons as appetizers, and you might want to ordet multiple orders of these, as the portion size is small. They are both very good though, and quite cheap, so don't feel uncomfortable ordering two or three portions of them if you like fried treats. I've tried the egg drop soup as well, which was well executed. For entrees, I've had the eggplant beef and the Gen, Tso's chicken. Both were very moist and flavorful with a generous drenching of sauce, served with a portion of rice almost as large as the main dish. So, in summary, this may not be the best place to take a date for a romantic meal, but you really can't beat it for delicious, late night Chinese food in Central Austin. I look forward to trying more of their dishes; Wok N Express doesn't disappoint!

Yelp
TAKEOUT ORDER REVIEW Ordered through food delivery service and received food in under an hour. Here's my order and what I thought: Egg roll- tasty Crab Rangoon (2 piece order)- perfect for one person appetizer and was the best thing on my order by far. Would definitely go back just for these. Egg drop soup- salty and had a chicken stock taste to it more than an egg flavor. Only took 2 bites and couldn't handle the salt so that was a waste. Combo LoMein- was just okay. Beef was cooked well and had a soft texture with great taste, chicken was a little dry but edible, shrimp was good but only had a few. Noodles were bland due to sauce being very liquid like and not sticking to noodles or absorbing well. Over abundance of veggies especially thick slices of half cooked onion. If I ordered this again I would get it with no onion and just order beef and shrimp.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
Great late night Chinese takeout and friendly people making it happen. The food was hot and quick and the owners run the restaurant so everyone was friendly and made sure the food came out nicely. The food, came out nicely! So, I wrote this review for you.

Yelp
Augh, generally avoid this. There are a couple of dishes that were fine but the vast majority should be avoided. What I had: - Pork eggrolls: they are a little smaller than you'd expect. It is more similar to the size of a veggie egg roll. Also, they were pretty bland, and I could taste - Crab Rangoon: you get two per order; get these over the egg rolls, for sure. - Spring Rolls: Sigh, these are usually not that great and this is no exception. I had hoped the side sauce would be more peanut-y, but it tasted more hoisin-y. The shrimp was thin and just for show, the vermicelli wasn't tender enough, and obviously bland, and the new element of sliced pork went almost entirely unnoticed because it was sliced so thin. I wouldn't get this again. - General Tso's (pork): it's not your traditional General Tso's flavor, but it's good nonetheless. This I actually finished (or rather, saved to finish)! The pork was tender and not dry. THIS IS SOMETHING I'D GET AGAIN. - Mongolian (beef): oh boy, nooooo. It's got this gross sweeteness, the meat isn't marinated at all, and ugh, I threw it away I was that uninterested in eating any more. - Lo Mein (shrimp): doooon't get this. I had one bite, picked out the shrimp, and literally threw the rest of the container away. It was barely sauced and offensively bland. Unless you're in desperate need of calories, don't eat this. - Vermicelli (chicken): Weeeelll, the vermicelli isn't as tough as the vermicelli in the Spring Rolls, but it's just as bland. Maaan, the chicken was a little tough, but the big problem was the poorly-flavored, sauced chicken and the bland sauce that came on the side. The sauced chicken tasted like, too sweet. Or the wrong sweetness. The flavor clashed with the garlic and ginger tones. I wouldn't get this again. Side note: the meat is not marinated. It's cooked and then tossed on the sauce depending on what's ordered. So the flavor never penetrates the meat. Most of the dishes here are not worth getting. I'd avoid unless you're getting one of the few that I recommend.

Ha M.

Yelp
I love this place. I have known about this place less than a year. And I have become regular customer since then. The food is delicious with decent price. I love wonton soup here. My other favorite dishes are fried rice and Chinese herbs chicken. The food is fresh and tasty. It is better than I expect.
google avatar

Justine T.

Yelp
Love the spicy tofu, spicy eggplant, their house fried rice and I always go out of my way to get the hot and sour soup! Not sure why people are complaining. It's fast casual Chinese food. Everything is always hot and tasty when I get it! If you're interested in dessert, their Waka Waka waffle ice cream trailer is right outside the store in the parking lot. If no ones there, just go inside and ask for help.

Yelp
Awesome variety of Asian dishes cooked fresh upon order. Menu has appetizers and the location also sells wines amd beers and an assortment of other nonalcoholic beverages. My favorite dish is lemongrass chicken, but those in my party also enjoyed their dishes including curry and pad thai.

Perry S.

Yelp
Good food, a lot of vegetarian options, well priced and fast pickup! Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Capsule review: Wok N' Express ekes out three stars on the combination of a decent beer selection on the convenience store side and the mere existence of Chinese carryout in Hyde Park. (They are the only game in town, unless you want to do the Mama Fu's at the Triangle, and you don't.) Full review below. In terms of setup, Wok N' Express is a combination convenience store/Chinese carryout place at the corner of 45th and Guadalupe with counter service and some indoor seating. Mostly the staff eat in there, so dining in feels a bit like being in someone else's living room. So, you can get traditional Chinese (stir fries, noodles, fried rolls, soups) instant-like from this quasi-buffet setup that's under glass and heat lamps, or order off a menu that means you'll at least get food from scratch. It really doesn't make that much difference: it's all essentially bland, starchy, salty, and fatty--not in an awful way, but also unlikely to exceed your expectations unless they are supremely modest. Portions are big and very cheap, and they're open late-ish, so if you've put off making dinner until becoming hangry, live in Hyde Park, and want something fast and cheap, phone in a pickup order (they also deliver, but we live six or seven blocks away) and you could really do a lot worse. The store itself sells booze until midnight to save you from being forced into Walgreens' awful selection and has a good assortment of craft beers and a few decent bottles of wine. I think there might be some scattered Asian groceries on the shelf. The staff do their jobs without succumbing to a compulsively smiley corporate ethos. Thought of as a walking-distance resource, Wok N' Express fills a niche in the Hyde Park ecosystem, and I'll be back. It's certainly not a destination, though.

Yelp
This is my go to Chinese take out place. I always get something simple like fried rice and egg rolls. It is always really good. My favorite thing is how kind the workers are. They always remember my name and go out of their way to make sure I have a good experience. I've tried the curry fried rice and it is also good too. If you eat meat give the sesame chicken a try, it's pretty good! The egg drop soup is also really good!
google avatar

Divya M.

Yelp
Please don't let the look of the place turn you away. It really is a hole in the wall restaurant but I highly recommend it. The egg rolls were so crispy and tasty I often think about them. Also their potstickers were to die for.
google avatar

Judith D.

Yelp
We ordered the General Tso's and Orange chicken and sadly we were truly disappointed. I'd hope to find a place within walking distance for Chinese food, but nope that didn't happen . The sauce that the chicken was made with was good...the problem was the chicken meat itself. It was like when you reheat chicken tenders and you place too much time on the timer. It was dry and really hard to chew
google avatar

Yelp
You really cannot judge a book by it's cover, or in this case, a restaurant by its converted gas station exterior, mini mart interior. My sister & I were running errands around campus and wanted to grab a quick bite, both of us were craving greasy chinese food & I opened up my Yelp app and found Wok 'N Express, we pulled in & I initially was turned off by the location. Was the food in this mini mart going to be edible? Well, I was pleasantly surprised. There were 4 tables set up inside the mini mart with people sitting & standing around waiting for their to-go orders so it had to be good, right? The woman working at the front was super sweet & helpful in giving us recommendations. We went with the Hot & Soup soup, Salt & Pepper Shrimp, & a spicy beef dish. Everything was really good & fresh but took almost 30 minutes for the food to come out. It is a little weird sitting just feet away from shelves of beer, wine and hot sauces. I probably wouldn't choose to stay & eat it there again due to the long wait and awkward seating area but I definitely would have them delivery or take it to-go next time.

Yelp
Thank you Online Delivery! It's been too long since I've had delivery service with the bonus of a short wait time! So far I've had the orange chicken, beef lo main, chicken pad Thai, chicken curry and the general tso chicken; all yummy in their own special familiar way. The menu has all the usual favorites with fair portions along with a scoop of rice and the obligatory fortune cookies.
