The Best Bars in Athens | Eater Atlanta

"Wonderbar on East Washington Street is your go-to for a night that’s equal parts playful and boozy. Well-worn, like your favorite pair of acid-wash jeans, this cozy spot offers a taste of nostalgia with a collection of vintage arcade games, childhood-favorite board games, and an old-school Nintendo 64 projecting 16-bit Mario Kart onto a side wall. The games are free to play, so long as you keep ordering whimsical concoctions like the Princess Peach Tea and the Captain Falcon, and quirky bar snacks including corn dogs and boiled peanuts." - Sarah Bisacca

25 Places to Eat and Drink in Asbury Park

"Wonder Bar is home of the yappy hour, an outdoor sandy area with picnic tables where dogs lose their minds with excitement as they swim in baby pools while patrons drink Budweiser. This Asbury Park institution also features a regular roster of local performers like Springsteen cover band, Tramps Like Us. And it’s home to one of the best burgers in town." - Celia Buckley, Melissa McCart

Visited the Wonder Bar yesterday, it's a fantastic bar. The staff are very helpful and chatty. The food is very nice too. But the memorabilia was very interesting. Pictures of Bruce Springsteen and other artists. There was also a band setting up for night which was cool to listen to

Sister bar of the Stone Pony! Great place to stop for a drink and listen to some music if you are visiting Asbury Park. Place is rich in musical history and definitely worth a visit.

Came to Wonder Bar for Yappy Hour and left seriously disappointed. My dog wandered a few times toward the gate that separates the dog area from the human-only side to lay in a shaded area. A staff member (the bouncer) told me that if I couldn’t keep him away from the gate, I needed to leash him or leave. Totally fair—she has to make sure dogs don’t get through the gate. I leashed him right away, no issue. A little while later, we were sitting at a nearby table with my leashed dog when one of the owner’s dogs came over to play. Out of nowhere, the same bouncer came over again—this time with an attitude, claiming our dog wasn’t allowed near the gate and had to stop winding up the other dogs. (Mind you, other dogs kept laying by it after she told me to leash mine, and she said nothing to them.) We were confused because he wasn’t even near it , and it was a different dog that was wound up about my dog playing with the owner’s . When my boyfriend tried to explain that, she got in his face, told us the dog wasn’t allowed in that area at all, and said if we didn’t like it, we could leave. The entire situation felt like a power trip and completely ruined the experience. I’ve since seen other reviews calling out aggressive staff, and another customer even told us it’s basically a rite of passage to get kicked out. The concept of Wonder Bar’s Yappy Hour is great—but if this is how they treat paying guests, I won’t be back, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who expects basic courtesy and respect.

Google
We didn't realize there was a dog friendly section... and that was so cool! Quick drinks, good bar food, great location.

Google
Just did my engagement photos here. Rico , Chris and our waitress were so amazing and so accommodating. Im very happy I got to take my pictures in my home town. Shout out to Wonder Bar 🔥always good vibes

Google
I wanted to really give this place 5 stars as I always remember coming here and having a great time. My most recent visit I brought along 4 people and we all thought the experience we had was OK. The location is awesome, the drinks are OK and the services is fair. Location has nice big outdoor patio. Drinks a bit pricey. They also do a variety of live performances, see pictures to see the stage.

The other week, my girlfriend and I visited Asbury Park and the surrounding towns for the first time for 3 days. We were on an unofficial tour of the towns, childhood homes, and bars/music venues where Bruce Springsteen grew up and got his start. So of course, we had to stop by the legendary Wonder Bar! I had seen photos before, but it was awesome being there in person for the first time! We loved the atmosphere and vibe of the whole place. We were particularly impressed with the staff. Everyone we came into contact with from the doorman to the bartender to the man and woman selling merch were friendly and professional. I wish I made a point of getting the names of the two employees who sold us the t-shirts, hoodie, tumbler, and magnets we bought, as they gave us outstanding customer service! The gentleman was older and had black hair and the lady was younger and had black hair, blue eyes, and glasses. Both were very personable, funny, and patient as I debated which size t-shirt and hoodie to purchase. I have OCD, so it can be a bit of a “process” before I ultimately settle on a size, style, etc. I hope their manager reads this because they deserve a raise for going above and beyond by making us feel so welcome and that we had their undivided attention. We plan on returning next summer or fall to catch a show and visit our new friends at the Wonder Bar. Thank you so much for helping to make our short but amazing trip to the Jersey shore everything we hoped it would be and more!

Google
I really wanted to love this place..It has the potential to be a fun, beachy, dog-friendly spot. But unfortunately, I’ve been twice now, and both times I’ve left feeling uncomfortable due to the owner’s unnecessarily rude and condescending attitude. I’m not someone who writes reviews or complains easily, but her behavior has consistently made me and others around me feel unwelcome. It’s disappointing, especially in a place that should feel laid-back and friendly. I will not be returning to this establishment.

Yelp
Thank you Wonder Bar! So glad the bar is local. Great vibe! Staff is great and best burger in Asbury. Guys at the door did a great job and with humor on a busy night. The nerds were fab. Pride Asbury Park!

Yelp
Had the wonder bar burger. Can taste the grilled tastes. Was the taste of a 100 summers. Wings for app. Crispy not soggy. Bands playing. Loved the music. Excellent shore experience!

Yelp
Our first visit at the Wonder Bar! For drinks and appetizers!! Great service! Our Server Budd was awesome! Wonder Bar Has live music! Indoor and outdoor seating! Dog friendly in the outdoor seating area! Metered street parking!

Kathy K.

Yelp
Well being a local and getting to to the Smithreens at the Wonder Bar.., I guess one can say my bad but we came early to get a seat. Keeping in mind, we have tickets to the show .. so came early and figured we would just have dinner here. And the horrendous food before the show even though we had Tickets booted us out.. so we all this horrible food come into hours later we can't even see the band. Talk about treating customers badly . Meanwhile, there's some people I let stay. It's actually one of my first shows at the Wunderbar and I've lived here in my whole life, but I'll never come back.. Warning to all, don't do it .

Yelp
Best (dog) bar in Asbury. Have to check out the Yappy Hour whether you have a dog or not - great times, meet lots of people and your dog will enjoy!

Yelp
It was a Wednesday night on the Jersey Shore in winter. We wanted music. That's a hard get Wednesday in winter, but the Wonder Bar had something they labeled "School of Rock," in which students from a music school would perform a couple of numbers. Some of the bands were okay. Some of the bands stunk. Who cared? The drinks were reasonable, the bartenders cheeky, and it was something to do on a Wednesday night in winter on the Jersey Shore.

Corey A.

Yelp
I HAD ONE DRINK. I repeat ONE drink, and have never felt the way I did having a drink from this place versus any other place. For starters when I asked for something simple like a rum and pineapple, the bartender asked me double or single. To which I was confused, I never had to tell a bartender at the other local bars for a "double or single". It was a tall, slender, white woman with tattoos and black hair. She seemed very greeting yet very distanced in the way she talked, almost as if she wanted to reel me in but not let me know what was happening. Second, it is not until that I am more than halfway finished with my drink and done that I feel a little more than tipsy. I never let myself get past anything than being that, so being more than that set off an alarm for me personally. My friends tried reassuring me I was fine and needed to eat something-- which is my third reason. Lastly, even upon eating something and resting for 2 WHOLE HOURS (you'd think it'd be gone by this time). However I was spinning, I felt like throwing up, I was nauseous, my body was shaking and having muscle spasms, all I could think was to call to have someone check up on me. I've heard stories about places like this in Asbury that like to drug or roofie people, Porta being a very well known one. But the last thing I expected was for Wonder Bar to follow suit. I had THREE, count em, THREE rum and pineapples at the Paradise bar in Asbury andI feel perfectly fine. I feel as if people should definitely do their research before trusting randomly employed people who is essentially a stranger to them. If you're in it and willing to risk your health for a drink, then I will not stop you and you can disregard this. But if you do care about your health and the health of those around you, please do take caution with this bar and the surrounding bars in the area. And try to establish a good relationship and trust with your bartender and place of choice! Moral is: one drink shouldn't be having a person feeling that way.

Yelp
Just went in for a drink and a couple of appetizers. Guy behind the T-shirt stand told us to sit outside if we like but to order food from the bar but since it's off season we have to go back and forth to get it outside. Totally understandable. We order through very very slow service, even though it wasn't busy, and everyone behind the bar was just walking around aimlessly. We bring everything outside and then security walks by telling everyone they have to leave in 10 minutes because there's a show starting at 7 and they need to rehearse and don't want anyone there. We had food and drinks to chug so we can leave. Unprofessional

M S.

Yelp
AVOID my bully mix got kicked out of yappy hour after a golden retriever bit him TWICE and obviously a dog is going to defend himself ..the owners were nasty and threw us out meanwhile the other owner stayed.... Everyone even came over to defend my pup but they didn't care awful people discriminating against pits

Bobby E.

Yelp
The food here is horrible. The security at the door are rude and inconsiderate. Their condescending. I could never come here again. I rather good across the street or anywhere else for that matter.
google avatar

M. W.

Yelp
Limited menu, bar vibe..casual dress ..local people and beach goers. Service was OK,..still a place to go chill. Chicken quesadilla had measly chicken a - should have gotten the burger.

Elle B.

Yelp
Cool , I was gonna say "little " but it actually isn't! It's actually pretty big inside, still a dive bar tho! Cool first stop before hitting the beach. We stopped here bc it was raining and they closed the beach down. Glad we stopped here Had a few beers Shooting the breeze Killing time... Didn't really try anything but fried pickles and they were great! Nice and hot This bar showcases bands! There is a stage , standing room and tables. I'm Sure it is cool when it's all set up! And I peeked at the case where they had some of NJ finest performers of all time, like THE BOSS himself! Also seen pics of the sexy Axl Rose Man...the 80's was so cool, I miss that decade.... I digress.... Clean restrooms, decent service, dive bar, good enough for me! Don't let the big clowns outside scare you This is actually a cool spot
google avatar

Michael N.

Yelp
When you're an institution like Wonder Bar, the little niceties such as food, service and crowd control are not critical. The burger was actually good, the pours generous and the music is bar band solid so a good time was has by all. I think guys named Vinnie get in free but I'm fairly certain that the Angie's of both persuasions will also get you a free wave through the turnstile. This is Jersey incarnate so wha u weighten four? Just tell 'em Angie sent you. An easy five stars.
google avatar

Barry K.

Yelp
Love this venue. It's a great place to see a band, the drinks are great and the staff is super friendly!
google avatar

Myra T.

Yelp
Fun and lovely cocktails. Good prices. And the yappy hour with the dogs outside--so much fun to watch the dogs enjoy themselves and play.
google avatar

Jay L.

Yelp
This place has been our go-to for more than 2 years through the Pandemic. But today at the start of the season my chicken sandwich came out with a very sad amount of fries. So much smaller than I remember for last 2 years. The California chicken sandwich and the Asbury Park IPA, (something-dragon) is what I get all the time and the sandwich is very good with a great spice blend My wife gets the veggie burger and son gets the grilled cheese. The cheese on the veggie burger was barely warm today, but she normally likes it. We'll be back to see if it gets any better and feels like it did last year.
google avatar

Craig H.

Yelp
Craig Hockenberry Superintendent I spent several hours at the Wonder Bar listening to amazing bands and eating one of the best burger ever! The arrive was amazing, the band was great and the burger was the best! GREAT FUN! This place is an iconic! CRAIG HOCKENBERRY
google avatar

Yelp
For some reason, you must be 21 or older to eat chicken fingers at noon at this place. Cannot comment on the food because we couldn't eat it.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Stopped by here for some food and drinks. The menu includes typical bar food. I had the Wonder Burger and we shared fried pickles. My burger was cooked perfectly and the fried pickles were really tasty. The bar itself was big and spacious. I would definitely return.

Jackson K.

Yelp
Visited asbury for the first time and was told this place has the best burgers I didn't actually believe it till I walked by the bar and the smell literally stopped me in my tracks, a real 10/10 burger.

Di L.

Yelp
Classic bar that has amazing chicken fingers and fantastic music. I highly recommend this place.

Frank S.

Yelp
Great place . Although I do not have a dog it is fun to watch them. great bands play here . Can get up close to stage .
google avatar

Cordelia R.

Yelp
Excellent venue, great place to get a rum bucket and have a really good time seeing local talent. Can't speak to the quality of the food but it looked like they had standard bar faire. The drinks were great, we had rum buckets, beers, etc all perfect. Will absolute be back again to see another great show

Yelp
Recently came to small dog yappy hour while vacationing in Asbury Park. My dog and I made tons of friends and were wishing we had something like this close to home! Great atmosphere for people and pets.

Yelp
We are visiting New Jersey from California! Our condo looks directly down on the Wonder Bar. Curiosity got us to go in, because we heard great music and saw they entertain doggos!! What a fun spot to just relax and have drinks!! Several nights a week they have live music. Very friendly staff and great drinks too. The mezcal margarita was BOMB!!
google avatar

Wes A.

Yelp
We decided to take a drive down the shore as a family on this unseasonably mild March day. We were refused entry because my kids aren't 21-years-old. The website says 21+ for SHOWS not 21+ to eat a burger at 1:00PM on a Saturday. Very disappointing. Asbury Park seems more dog friendly than kid friendly.
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
Been coming here for 40+ years. Aunt used to give me a couple of bucks to get lunch here and I'd get a burger n fries and sit on the beach all Summer. Its my go to burger place.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
We absolutely love it here! Especially yappy hour, where you can bring your dogs! Yappy hour is an unbelievable experience, we've met people who have brought their dogs all the way from Manhattan, and all over New Jersey. The owners and the dogs all love it. Scout, the security representative is amazing. They are so good with the dogs, and gets to know each and every one. The food is amazing, we've tried a bunch of things off of the 'munchies' menu, and it was all fresh and really crisp. The cheese dip that came with our fries is "addicting" apparently. I absolutely loved the onion rings, maybe the best I've ever had! The happy hour deals are okay, my family was never really happy with our cocktails. Not too tasty, or that interesting. We typically go for wine and beer now that we know what's up. However I recently tried the rosè spritzer, which is muddled orange, rose and seltzer, and it may have been my favorite drink in town! It didnt taste too boozy, but the flavors were great! Love it here, we are definitely going to be regulars soon!

Shaylyn R.

Yelp
If I could give 0 I would. Tried to come her with my newborn, MIL, and Husband while we were down for a day trip to Asbury. When we asked for a table for 3 and a baby they rudely told us no and I thought she was joking and then my mil asked if they were serious the lady there said yes they were serious and told us they don't serve under 21. They could've told us that kindly instead of being assholes. It was our first time to AP and Wonder Bar and certainly our last to WB. Next time be nicer and add your age requirement to your website. P.s it was 3pm on a weekday. Who doesn't serve everyone on a weekday afternoon???
google avatar

Jim T.

Yelp
We stopped in today because it finally felt like Spring! I had never been but my girlfriend had been a few times. They had a good beer selection, I went with a Carton Boat draft and she got a Blue Moon. $13, I love beer but I still can't believe any 1 beer ever gets sold for more than $5, but it's Asbury so everything is overpriced. We happened to come during "Yappy Hour" and there were dogs everywhere, it was so cool! So many cute dogs. The area for dogs is completely separate and gated off so as to keep your dog inside and allow space for those without dogs as well. The bar in middle allows you to get drinks from either side and you can go back and forth if you have a wristband. There is a separate line for entry here. Overall, nice outdoor space for warm weather and the food I saw looked pretty good. Great spot if you have a dog and also want to go to the bar.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Delicious food and a great atmosphere! I didn't stay for a show but they played fun music at a good volume anyway. The veggie burger and fries were great! A bit pricy (which was expected given the location) but the amount of food you get is very fair.
google avatar

Aaron W.

Yelp
So I guess you guys changed your policy to be 21 & up. That's all good & all but does your door guy have to be a total D bag about it & saying it has always been that way. I had my 9 year old in there four weeks ago. Until you get more professional door staff we will be taking our money elsewhere when in AP even when we do not have the kid. I suggest the Seahorse. They seem like they do not have A holes as their front of house & their food is so much better.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
A much needed visit to AP and the WB- perfectly situated right off the boardwalk- huge indoor venue built for bands - great bar and tons of typical bar food - it's pretty good and is just what you needs after a few beverages. If the weather is good go outside and enjoy the outside seating- nice breezes and great service- sit back and enjoy the sun and get a Cruzan Rum bucket or two...or three
google avatar

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Came here after the Hallow-wiener walk of 2021! The drinks and the service were great. Priced right and perfect for those interested in participating in the "yappy hour". So why the 2 stars? There's no signage as to how to get to the rest room from the "yappy hour " area and if you're a new customer, like myself, you will get chewed out by the (manager?...hostess?..she never identified herself) and reminded repeatedly that it's not a public restroom. (Yeah, no kidding... I'm a paying customer who had no idea where the bathroom was but thanks for your help.)
google avatar

C K.

Yelp
Very friendly and helpful staff who were adoring with our dog. Our dog had a great time here!
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
Very rude Staff! We came for a burger and we didn't know there was a show and the place had to close, we were finishing our beers and first a woman with a hard attitude told us we had to leave but we didn't understand why she just limited to say we had to finish the beer and leave, then I don't know and out of nowhere this guy from the staff was very rude to my friend signaling to leave right now and that was really rude and offensive because we didn't know what was happening, if they were like normal people communicating in a simple and educated manner the whole thing but NO! They were rude, uneducated, bad breathing, and simply not suited to handle a big Jersey shore spot where people from all over the country even the world come ! SHAME SHAME SHAME!
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Wonder bar seemed to be my type of place. A bit of welcomed attitude from the bartenders that was playful, but still a bit insulting. Not being offended at all, I knew this would be a fun place. Ordered a round of drinks and then roamed the property. Outside, was yappy hour. People, I think, bring their dogs to enjoy roaming free and sniffing other dog's butts. It could be possible that dogs just show up on their own... I don't know. We walked around and saw some dog bowls that mentioned vodka. Could these dogs be getting drunk too? Not sure, but wouldn't be surprised... Everyone seemed to be having a good time here. My only complaint was the women's room line. I did have to spend a bit of time waiting around while my wife navigated a long line. It wasn't even that crowded, so I would hate to see it when it was packed a band playing.
google avatar

Khanh N.

Yelp
This has got to be the place to go over the summer. Especially when they have outdoor seatings for you to bring your furry friend. We wanted to catch some of the Ravens vs Bills game and came here. The hostess and waitress were both very friendly and accommodating. Although we were full and we just wanted drinks, they were ok with that. We didn't feel the need to order to stay and watch the game. It was a little bit empty and they're drinks are just regular but I would consider coming back here again.

Jackie K.

Yelp
If you have a Rottweiler or any "aggressive breed" THEY ARE NOT WELCOME HERE. 3 dogs got into a small quarrel today and I immediately grabbed my rotties head, meanwhile another dog kept going after him. The blonde woman pictured said "the Rottweilers gotta go". He did NOTHING and did not even fight me when I grabbed him. They did not say anything to the aggressor. I asked for my cover $ back to give to a shelter that appreciates Rottweilers and she would only give me half back. As we were leaving she said "this is why I hate Rottweilers". She probably shouldn't be working at a place for dogs if you cannot treat them equally. We will absolutely not be back. DO NOT GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR MONEY.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
We were wandering around the boardwalk and then were trying to make our way to another bar but found this place and decided to stop in. I ordered the rose spritzer cocktail. It was ok but a little watered down. I wish they had a little more selection on the beer and drinks. The outside dog area was cool. People can bring their dogs and let them roam around in the gated area. They even set up water bowls for them. One thing that bothered me were the bathrooms. They only had 2 stalls and there was a line. One of the workers kind of had attitude and said we had to move around the other way cause we were going into the bands room. I wouldn't want to be here at night. Also the bathroom smelled like urine on the floor and there wasn't any soap.

Kaylee G.

Yelp
Wish I could give a 0 star rating. My husband and I went today for Yappy Hour after driving 2 hours to get here and an hour to find parking. I got in line at 4 pm. I don't know if it's my skin tone, my curly hair or what.. but I waited in line just so the blonde lady can tell me that the couple in front of us were the last ones to go in. After getting to the front of the line. I cross the street and the rest of the line is going in. They just didn't seem to want us particularly going in. Definitely not worth the 2 hour drive to get treated like crap for breathing the same air as everyone else.

Yelp

Yelp
Its largely lame but is some sort of monument to clowns in jersey. I liked it ok, but i like all bars. This ones cool if you wanna see older ladies yappin about whatever they've got goin on, things like having people build them sheds, cutting their grass for money, sending kids to college, or just general honkishness. All in all it does tha trick but the service sucks except for the tall dark haired girl with glasses. She's cool. Ps Fur Baby
google avatar

Kris K.

Yelp
Service was beyond great! That's where the good part of this review ends. I ordered the Wonder Burger. Now, don't get me wrong. I don't mind paying $14.00 for a good burger during these trying times of Covid-19. I ordered it medium rare and it came out well done! Side note to the manager: Since we are dining outside, tell your servers and staff to spray their cleaning solution on a rag/towel and not openly on the tables. The slightest breeze is picking up the spray and depositing on peoples food! Food Safety 101
google avatar

Abigail W.

Yelp
My first time swinging by the Wonder Bar was on a summer weekend this year. After an hour of looking for parking I left. This isn't necessarily Wonder Bar's problem, but a parking lot would be a huge help! I had my pup with me and we were both bummed we couldn't join the outdoor fun (Yappy Hour). Second time around, I did end up getting in, mostly because a music festival ended and it was right outside the gates. It's funny, my 4yr old niece saw this place and wanted to go inside. I agreed with her, it did look like a fun house on the outside.. but try explaining it's a bar to her.. Anyway- huge plus: Fat tire on tap. Awesome live band. Dance floor. I'm hoping one day to make it to Yappy Hour :)
google avatar

Mel M.

Yelp
ASBURY PARK: Wonder Bar Yappy Hour is always a fun time. A nice open space for your dog to run around and interact with other dogs! There are also swimming pools and an agility area! Look at Brie jumping over the pole! Drinks are available at the outdoor bar and food is served in a separate area where you can keep an eye on your dog. Check their rules before going!
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Yappy Hour is a fun afternoon for both dogs and their owners alike. We have been here a few times now and love to sit and have drinks while our dog has a great time. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Stopped in for a beer. It was pretty empty. Waitress was friendly. Felt pretty dirty/divey? I guess thats the way to describe it. Decent place to stop by for a drink. Looks like they have an outdoor area for dogs-thats pretty cool! Food prices seemed a bit much for the atmosphere.
google avatar

Natty C.

Yelp
Fun outdoor (and indoor) bar. It's pretty casual. They allow dogs and have a "Yappy hour". They also serve food but it looks like typical bar fare. There's picnic tables outside but not much other seating.
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
This place is deceiving from the outside. It looks like it's a burger spot for families. It's right on the beach and has a cool seating tiki area with sand. But it's actually for dogs! And there's this weird looking clown guy painted outside and it's all carnivaly looking. But it's not a spot for kids at all it's really just a janky bar. The food is cheap and the chicken tenders were good but the grilled chicken sandwich I had was on the dry side but I've had worse. Beer is cheap there and if u got a pooch and you like beer this is your spot.
