A Canal Street Food Hall Shutters, While Another Pops Open Nearby | Eater NY

"A deep-pocketed hybrid food-hall/delivery concept created by Walmart e-commerce figure Marc Lore that opened its first locations in 2023 and had rolled out nearly 40 sites nationwide by the time of reporting, with a target of 100 by the end of 2025. The company spent reportedly $60 million on recipes and restaurant concepts from partner chefs including Marcus Samuelsson and José Andrés, and it describes itself as “a new kind of food hall — iconic chefs and top restaurants.”" - Melissa McCart

Google
Just a fun little coffee shop with really good food and a great location if you are on Highway 111 or live in Palm Desert. I really enjoyed the iced coffee I got and I don't remember when I have ever had better hash browns. Perfect spot for an meeting or a date.

Google
Perfect spot for breakfast/brunch! Service was helpful, quick, and thorough! We enjoyed the special, a ham and Swiss croissant sandwich, as well as the avocado toast. Both were generous portions and tasted delicious! The fresh juice was a treat and lattes were perfect. The big straw was a cute touch. We’ll be back!

Google
Wonder is wonderful. We're so lucky to have this place in Palm Desert. It's a super cute, independent restaurant operated by a family who moved to the desert from Portland, OR. The menu has a nice, surprisingly varied, number of dishes. Many of both breakfast and lunch options. There's eggs, a burrito, checken sandwich, burger, salads, and more. I've had the breakfast sandwich and breakfast burrito several times. They also bake some beautiful and creative donuts. Note for the BNP tennis and Coachella crowds: The secret is out. This place gets VERY busy during those events. But if you're here in the other times of the season you shouldn't have to worry about it being too busy. Anyway, this place is worth a try next time you're in Palm Desert driving by on the 111.

Google
I finally checked out Wonder after hearing so many amazing recommendations and it absolutely lived up to the hype! It was my first time visiting, and I was blown away. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and it was loaded with deliciousness, every bite was full of flavor and super satisfying. I also got a Cinnamon Toast Crunch doughnut, and not only was it beautifully made, but it tasted just as good as it looked! You can really tell they put love into everything they make. I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

Google
Everything about this place was delicious! I got the mushrooms, egg and cheese sandwich with French toast and I HIGHLY recommend! The environment was so so cute and very welcoming. Probably my new favorite restaurant in the WHOLE valley! 100% worth it.

Google
LOVED this place, they came up on my tiktok and I saw they were local so I went to try. Immediately was welcomed, the place is so cute and just has an amazing vibe. I watched one of the staff bring mini utensils and a cup for this little girl, SO CUTE!!! Definitely give this place a try if you’re in palm desert 🤍

Google
Cute and so delicious! Employees were nice and friendly, I definitely recommend! However, they don’t offer a lot of seating and food can take a while so it got pretty crowded. Food was worth it!

Google
I absolutely loved this place! The food was amazing, the owners are so kind and so welcoming. I enjoyed every moment of it. It’s the perfect place for the desert and such a great place to come enjoy the weather and yummy donuts:)

Yelp
I love that this place is here. It is comforting to have new delicious drink and dining options catering to my demographic. As a busy stay-at-home with a nosy dog, it's nice to find a friendly spot off of El Paseo that's (technically) walking distance. Located right by Thriftology, which I'm also excited to visit, this place epitomizes the new Palm Desert- California cool and relaxed vibes.

Yelp
Been recommending clients to go here for months, we went for breakfast egg sandwiches (scrumptious!!) and iced coffee drinks this morning after a 20 mile bike ride. It's wonderful!! Love the 80s alternative new wave music too! Perfect Sunday morning. SO glad we can experience a vacation like vibe in our own backyard!!

Yelp
Had an iced lavender latte. A bit pricey but it was really great quality. BE AWARE OF THE COST BEFORE YOU PAY AS YOU MAY BE OVERCHARGED. I was charged $6 for an iced latte and I tipped $1. I added just one pump of lavender - no milk substitute. The wall menu says $5 for a latte and my receipt says .50 for the one pump of lavender. So I guess it should've been 5.50 but the receipt shows $6. A fifty cent overcharge isn't that big of a deal - it's more principle. Charge correctly please. Since I was so hot and busy with my baby I was too distracted to notice it. Anyway, The inside is small and so cute. Just wish they ran the ac when it's 93 degrees out so we could've sat and stayed a while but it was way too hot inside. Maybe we'll be back but we'll be careful to make sure we're charged correctly before paying.

Yelp
Decided to return to Wonder yesterday (Monday). Always good to return to a new venue 6 to 8 weeks after one's first visit. Some observations. 1. When you use a credit card at Wonder there now exists a 4% surcharge. No other business in town does this. Credit card companies charge restaurants 2 to 3.5% for use of cards. 4% is excessive, makes a clear statement they're focused on cash. Let's hope all of this cash is being properly presented to the IRS. FYI - I did not receive a receipt for my $50. cash spent. 2. Desert Vegetable Bowl. It was exceptional as last time. However, the price went from $15 to $16. Does this mean the staff got a 7% raise? Does this mean their patrons are now earning 7% more? 3. The mimosas went from $7 to $8. These folks just opened. Guess they felt they can collect more. Product remains excellent but a price increase after 30 days is just not right. My partner was mischarged for a cold brew. There was one price listed on the wall, yet they chose to collect an extra 50 cents from him. This place has great food. I'm even willing to overlook the eggshells found in Dan's sandwich. However, when you start playing around with prices in this reasonably small town there are consequences. I'm going to take a breather before I return. Hoping the owner carefully reads my comments.

Yelp
Cute little coffee and sandwich shop. Has a few tables. The pastries and other baked goods looked amazing, but I got a chicken sandwich. It was good. Next time I'm in the area I plan to come back to get coffee and pastries.

Yelp
Beautiful cute little restaurant! Something in this place that made me Happy. The food was delicious! Definitely will go back and try their pastries next time

Yelp
Where to begin ? I was excited to see a new place in town. Place was pretty busy. Very nice pastries . Pricing for coffee is ridiculous. I asked for half and half coconut and almond milk and they charged me 2.00 I don't even get charged that at the airport when I ask for a split! My latte was 8.00 . They also charge for the syrup. The wall hanging stated 5.00 for latte and I was charged 6.00 with brown sugar. Donut was excellent per my daughter Coffee was ok We had the loaded hasbrowns they were good as well. Service is subpar- manager was either naturally rude and not friendly or over tired . Barista cashier seemed nice . Very cute place nice ambiance. Be nice if they had some Gluten Free items.

Yelp
Finally was able to check out this place, and I'm glad I did! This place is open 8am - 2pm everyday except Wednesdays. Great place for a coffee, mimosa or beer or breakfast/brunch. Plenary if hot food options and assorted pastries. Sausage egg cheddars cheese arugula breakfast sandwich (brioche bun): 4 stars 4 stars and very good! Perfectly cooked and fluffy scrambled egg, melted cheddar cheese and a fat sausage patty with fresh arugula to add a little something extra. Put this on a soft brioche bun and you have a great 4 stars sandwich. I'm giving the sandwich 4 stars because as good as the sausage was, I think it could use a little more seasoning. The sausage patty is good and my guess is that it's made in house. I would order this sandwich again. Service and decor is 5 stars- cute little boutiquey breakfast place and refreshingly mixed-age crowd for the area. Think I found a great new coffee / breakfast place.

Yelp
Wife and I are breakfast here after golf and it was amazing. Services was awesome and the staff is very friendly. I had the chorizo breakfast burrito and it was probably the best breakfast burrito I've ever had. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

Yelp
Came here soon after they opened. Ordered a flat white. When I saw the cup coming out I started to get worried- it was a 16oz cup. I was served a latte- 14oz of milk with espresso. I ordered 4oz of milk and espresso. I thought if it was on the menu they would know how to make it. The owner asked if everything was ok and I quietly went up to him to explain- I ordered a flat white and "this isn't a flat white" to which he replied- yes it is. I explained the whole point of the drink is the size/ratio. He told me I was wrong and offered to put my drink in a smaller cup to appease me. He mentioned something about the prices being the a same for all the drinks. I'd honestly pay $10 for a real flat white. It's not the price- it's the fact that I couldn't get what I ordered. Overall a major turnoff for me. Doesn't seem the owners understand American hospitality. He simply could have listened and asked me- "what is a flat white to you and we'll try to make it" - that's all I was looking for. And if they did know how to make it- I'd be buying one every day, as I pass it on my daily walk. Unfortunately they've lost a local/ year round customer.

Yelp
Beautiful breakfast/lunch spot in heart of Palm Desert. Food is delicious and owners and staff are super friendly. A must try!

Yelp
This was our first time and it was incredible! Sausage and cheese sandwich was really good along with the strawberry donut and coffee! It was not cheap, but you get what you pay for! I will definitely be back when I am in Palm Desert again! 10/10

Yelp
A continued example of poor business practices. Thank you for your apology... or lack thereof. Both times the owner has spoken up, it has been to "school" me on meat temps. Never addressing the inappropriate behavior of his manager. Unfortunate.

Yelp
Nice new place with a down under flavor. Some traditional, some unique breakfast, lunch and coffee menu items. You order at the counter then find a place to sit. Was set up for tables mostly settings for two but I'm sure they can set it up for larger parties. My wife said it reminded her of a ice cream shop. It was white, clean and brand new. They have a pastry display with croissants and other sweets. The Americano coffee was hot and hit the spot. The Desert Vegetarian entree was tasteful with a spicy touch too it. Interesting combination of vegetables with scrambled eggs. Wonder Big Breakfast plate with Sausage and hashbrown. Both entrees had buttered toast. The owner came by and said hello and asked us how we liked the food. Nice change of pace for a Sunday morning. Will need to go back to try a pastry and a sandwich or two.

Alis C.

Yelp
Best breakfast food in the area. I'm shocked at the low reviews although they are all around the same time so I wonder if one person got mad and then had friends write bad reviews. Nothing ever but pleasant customer service here and have now eaten here 5-10 times.

Yelp
A hidden gem in. South Palm desert. I had the breakfast burrito and friend she had the Turkey sandwich. What was impressive was the fact how creative both were. It's tough to explain but one has to experience the food. If you are looking for your average run of the mill sandwich then this is not the place . Plus the owners are very hospitable and appreciate your presence.

Yelp
This family run business has beautiful decor great ambience and amazing food. It's reasonably priced handmade with love.

Yelp
This place is amazing. You get a nice portion cooked to perfection for a decent price. The staff is friendly and very accommodating.

Yelp
Cute little shop with a great esthetic! Had a donut which was very tasty and fresh. Cashier was friendly!

Luis J.

Yelp
Disappointed! Expected better service from owner, and was rather greeted with "you can't have your drink from anywhere else..you need to leave" Imagine, we were there to consume. I stated this to her, and she still asked us to leave. I will not recommend just based on service. Makes you seem like the bad person there. This places deserves all the low rated reviews. I've been to, much more recognized places, and never heard them not accepting to serve us because of a drink. You want to be better than your competitors, and show some kindness and respect.

Yelp
Lovely little spot in Palm Desert. I inhaled the avocado toast. So good! My strawberry mimosa was presented beautifully and topped off the experience nicely. Grabbed a donut and an iced latte on the way out, both delicious!

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by here around 11:00 on Sunday. We were able to walk right up and order and two of the 5 indoor tables were available. The pastries in the display case looked a bit dried out and not as appetizing as I'd hoped. As we ordered we watched a young lady overflow a coffee/hot chocolate drink from the paper cup, then add a mountain of whip cream, then try to clean up the darkly stained cup. Thankfully she finally decided to transfer it to a different cup. During the first 25 minutes of waiting for our burrito and ham and cheese croissant, we saw several coffee items being turned back due to being served the wrong item. *Ask about the sizes before you pay as they do not ask and you may be surprised* Luckily at the 30 minute mark our two food items were served. My husband said he was impressed with the burrito- the homemade chorizo, the toasted tortilla was a pleasant surprise, didn't break apart. My ham & cheese croissant was flakey and delicious. Although adorable, this eatery has some kinks to work out- accuracy & efficiency of orders and friendliness of employees.

Yelp
Avoid at all costs -- unless you enjoy being treated like an inconvenience. I rarely leave reviews, but this experience was so shockingly unpleasant, I felt compelled to warn others. The person working -- I won't call them a "barista" or "server" because that would imply a level of service -- was unbelievably rude. From the second I walked in, their facial expression said it all: annoyance, disdain, and boredom all rolled into one. To make matters worse, my friend bought a drink specifically so we could use the restroom. I paid for it with my card -- we were customers. And yet they said only he could use the bathroom?!? Instead of a simple "sorry" or any attempt at understanding, I was verbally scolded for holding an empty Starbucks cup. I was stunned. I wasn't asking for a free drink. I wasn't loitering. I just wanted to throw the cup away and use the restroom because I paid to do so-- but even then, they removed the trash bin as I approached. It was humiliating and bizarre. There are plenty of amazing local spots where the staff actually want to be there and treat you like a human being. This is not one of them. I won't be back -- and frankly, I'm shocked anyone is.
google avatar

Ismelda S.

Yelp
Had the bacon egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. I didn't realize it had greens inside so I removed them. Bit sure if the sauce was ketchup but it was good. It's a cute little place has some seating inside and outside. I will go again for sure.

Yelp
Nice little breakfast place that just opened around the corner from us ! Excited to try it , made a quick stop today to checkout their menu!

Yelp
What a WONDERful gem this place is! The breakfast burrito is to die for! One of the best I've ever had! It is very apparent that high quality ingredients are used in every dish they make. The owners are so kind and friendly! Happy to be working right across the street from this DELICIOUS little restaurant!

Mallory P.

Yelp
Cute place! But rude service. We were greeted warmly and told if we wanted to sit we would need to wait - no problem! Once seated, Some of my party didn't want any food and were just getting drinks, and they were rudely looked at and treated after. we didn't know that if we were going to sit we were all expected to order an entree. wish that would've been made clearer instead of the server treating us with signs of their obvious frustration. Could be a really cool place they just need to adjust their attitude towards customers and communicate- tables are for people ordering meals and coffee is to go. message received! Also my friend asked for oat milk for dietary reasons and they gave her whole milk. (Edit) After i posted this review we got our bill and there was a split charge that we were not made aware of, and the food wasn't even split for us, they just handed us an extra plate... kind of ridiculous to charge $5 for the costumer to cut their own food. I understand if they split the plate in the back for us, but no. Will not be coming back.

Layla A.

Yelp
First off I try to support local places but this place doesn't deserve my business or anyone else's.... My review is about the customer service or lack there of. I ordered a coffee and went to sit outside to wait for my friend that was joining me, as I was sitting outside the owner or the manager lady came out and told me that I can't have my WATER BOTTLE outside because her liquor license could be revoked, I was like it's a water bottle with water in it. HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING.. I didn't want to argue so I said sure as soon as my friend shows up I'll go put it in my car. She said I can take it to the back of her kitchen for you (strange) I said OK great. My friend showed up she went in to go order. My friend didn't know what she wanted so she came back to ask me what I got.. my friend made a comment about how rude that lady was... My friend then ask the lady what she recommended and she said I don't know there's drinks on the board take a look, so when she came back out, my friend said do you have anything with Carmel? She said YES very rudely we have "a salted caramel" my friend said great. I'll take that.. our two children were going to meet us so we decided to go inside and grab a table for four. The tables are set up for two people each so we asked one of the girls if we could push the tables over. She said let me go ask but she never responded back, so we just scooted it over, When my friends daughter showed up and we're waiting for my son to show up the owner now comes over to the table and says that we are not ALLOWED to move the tables and that we shouldn't be SEATING until our whole party was here.. I TOLD HER my son is like A minute away. We got up and told her we are just gonna leave. My Friend got up to pay for her drink and the lady kept going on and on.. my friends like I'm not here to argue with you. Just wanna pay my bill and will leave.. she tells my friend she didn't have to pay for her drink. Well yeah she didn't even get to drink it.. Never ever have I been to a coffee shop with such a vile person.. to the owners get her some training on how to be nice to the customers. If she is the OWNER that's a bummer..

Andrew M.

Yelp
Staff was nice, but the food took a long time and there was limited seating inside. They also snuck in a 3% fee (meant for credit cards, and afaik is illegal now) while using a gift card.
google avatar

S W.

Yelp
Unfortunately the owners decided to put a brand new guy at the register (apparently a staff no show) instead of taking it themselves. The guy didn't know what could or couldn't be done with their eggs so my order was wrong. Instead of coming over and apologizing for their staff error, she complained to us and said they couldn't be bothered to do egg whites-this was long after we ordered & paid for them. She had no idea of customer service and didn't care. Response to incorrect owner's statement: 1. There's no information stating we choose a table After ordering. 2. No one at the register said you don't do egg whites, we ordered & paid for them. The undercooked over easy egg wasn't acceptable

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I've had the Southwest Steak Salad twice now and I couldn't recommend it more. Great service and I love the cute open feeling of the shop.

Tania J.

Yelp
Walked in with matcha from a nearby spot and were told no outside drinks which was understandable, but the delivery was unfriendly. When we tried to grab a menu, the older staff lady told us to look at the menus outside (in triple-digit heat) without so much as a greeting. The vibe was cold and unwelcoming, so we left without ordering. Bad hospitality and disappointing.
google avatar

Renee K.

Yelp
Wow! What a great stop for a timely and delicious breakfast! The place is so cozy, cute and clean! The service was quick and friendly. The food was amazing!! The highly food critic husband said the breakfast burrito was "life changing"! Avocado toast was chefs kiss!

Carla L.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I thought I was wrong about the vibes feeling off as soon as they saw me. I felt extremely unwelcome there, and the waitress didn't even crack a smile when attending me, only after having ordering something. And it was very forced. She sure smiled at the other customers, by the way. I had decided to just cancel my order and leave to go eat somewhere else. The lady looked a little too excited for me to leave. They should just be straightforward about the type of customers they are willing to serve. Very unfortunate. The color of our skin shouldn't determine the amount of respect we get.

Kayla M.

Yelp
Came here to get coffee/matcha. We ordered an iced unsweetened matcha with double the matcha and almond milk & a latte with 3 pumps of brown sugar syrup and almond milk. It seems like they make there lattes (both matcha & coffee lattes) with more water than milk so they are a bit watered down. It was still good but I've had better. Overall I'd give the drinks a 7/10. I think The shop itself was small but cute & has lots of natural sunlight. We didn't order any food but their food looks delicious! I'd recommended giving it a try!

Brenda D.

Yelp
First time and last time customer went here for lunch with a friend decided to get two drinks was not informed of their "policy " when arrived I was given the receipt in a rudely manner had my hand out to receive the receipt and the cashier put in the counter. My friend and I decided to have the drinks inside and shortly when we we're having our conversation a white older lady approached us asking for the utensils and when a party of two white women showed up they were treated like a serving coffee shop and the cashier was a server taking their order and even gave them water. As my friend are seating next to them. Moments later the same white older lady approached us once again and informed us of their-policy" to order and then to take a seat which my friend and I did. The same "policy" we were told was not applied to the party of white women next to us. It's 2025 and as women they should be more inclusive and supportive towards all women and not just white.

Lizbeth J.

Yelp
We were excited to try the food, we heard good things about it, we didn't get to try it because of how bad the service was!!! We just couldn't stay to put up with it. Definitely not coming back!

Arleth H.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. The owners are incredibly passive aggressive and make the whole experience uncomfortable. While the food is good, it's not worth putting up with the attitude. Definitely won't be coming back.

Liz S.

Yelp
The food at WONDER is beyond wonderful! Today we had the fried chicken sandwich with melted cheese and coleslaw interior. OMG! There's a perfectly roasted jalapeño toothpicked to the top of the sandwich- yum- every bite of the sandwich deserved a bite of the jalapeno. Great service and really tasteful decor inside and out. We'll be back and back and back again!!
google avatar

Yelp
Everything was amazing! French toast is my favorite but I tried the donut with Chantilly cream and strawberries and thought I had found heaven in one bite. Great service, great owners. New favorite place!

Neyla V.

Yelp
Wanted to support a local spot. Terrible idea. The older lady at the register yelled at my husband and told him to stop and it was going to be 35 minutes for food. My husband asked what about drinks and she said I don't have a barista today it's going to take 15 minutes, still yelling at him. when she asked what he was ordering. She was upset they were understaffed and took it out on customers. WTF!!! We left right away. Not even a welcoming atmosphere. Seemed like they're racist.
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
This place is a total win! The food? Chef's kiss. I'm still thinking about that Brisket Burrito like it's my new crush. The staff were super friendly, and the whole place just had good vibes all around. 10/10 would eat again--might even bring my stretchy pants next time.
google avatar

Gillian V.

Yelp
We wanted to try this place for my friend's birthday (party of 8). We ordered food and drinks and after an hour the owner asked us to leave. While we all TOTALLY understood that he needed the tables the way he spoke to us was a bit too much. It's a cute spot but during the season the 6 tables aren't enough seating. It's the year round people that keep you in business not JUST the snow birds.

Brooke T.

Yelp
Took my daughters here today. Super cute decor! We shared the chicken club sandwich & chorizo breakfast burrito. EXCELLENT!! I would recommend both but the burrito is a definite MUST!!! We will be back, support local! Plus, they're very friendly & it's a family run business!

Alex V.

Yelp
What first appears as a cosy coffee & pastry shop, becomes a beautiful spot for breakfast with a full menu, super fresh ingredients, lovely staff and atmosphere. The coffee was great, matcha also top notch. Highly recommend to check it out.

Semeli R.

Yelp
The food was delicious! All of us loved it. Generous, yummy portions. Everyone was friendly and service was great.
google avatar

Yelp
Food and drinks were fine. Was there with a larger party for my birthday. Owner decided he needed our tables and told us to leave. Those are literally the words he used. I won't be back
google avatar

Yelp
What a new gem for breakfast in the valley. The place is cute, great options for good healthy veggies and vegan food and Family run. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
What a fantastic addition to the Palm Desert restaurant scene. Tucked just off 111 near Deep Canyon Dr., this place offers fresh, unique breakfast and lunch items...all made to order. I had the vegetarian breakfast bowl and it was fantastic. My friend had the hot chicken sandwich...which was large enough for two! Everything was outstanding! Can't wait to go back!
