Where to Find Fantastic Asian Snacks in San Francisco - Eater SF

"The unsung hero of boba tea cafes is the Taiwanese popcorn chicken. If you've experimented outside the drink menu at any San Francisco tapioca place, you've most likely tried the crunchy, juicy snack. The popcorn chicken at Wonderful Desserts is fried, seasoned with salt and pepper (and often times five-spice powder), and topped with fried basil. Again, cash only." - Maya Wong, Janelle Bitker, Ellen Fort

The 19 Best Chinese Restaurants in San Francisco

"Hunanese cuisine often takes a back seat to the Bay Area’s bumper crop of Cantonese and Sichuanese restaurants, so it’s no wonder that this hot spot has caught on with the area’s Chinese transplants seeking Hunan dishes. Expect a wait at peak meal hours—especially for large parties, as the dining room is compact. The boldly flavored dishes incorporate oodles of smoked, cured and fermented ingredients-from the bacon-like pork wok-tossed with leeks, garlic and soy, to the pungent pork, black bean and pickled chili mixture that tops those spicy, chewy, hand-cut Godfather's noodles. The whole chile-braised fish, fresh and flaky in its bath of bright red chili sauce flecked with scallions and garlic, is an absolute must." - The MICHELIN Guide

Like the name, the drinks are quite wonderful. I like to drink boba slushies/smoothies and I am glad that this place uses real fruit for their fruity drinks for a fresh, natural flavor. You can also alter sweetness on many drinks. Highly recommend

Google
Good bubble tea, which has a strong “milk tea” flavor. The boba were pretty nicely cooked, my main complaint is that they use crushed ice which competes with the tapioca pearls to get into your straw. With larger ice cubes, this would’ve been a better drink.

Google
This place leaves out their boba all day and it's hard as rocks when you come in later in the day. The recipe is always inconsistent and changing of the taste. They got a sign outside saying best boba in town honestly t pumps and quickly nearby taste way better. The portion for their popcorn chicken is so little they only give you up to half a bag. Prices been going up and no change in size or the quality of the drinks.

New vibes pointing to a recent remodel. Very clean looking but it feels a little sterile currently with the lack of decor. This is my longtime favorite after dinner spot for fresh fruit boba tea & smoothies in the sunset district. If you’re not sure what to get, I’d just ask what is the best seasonal fruit they have right now and get a boba / smoothie of that.

Wonderful Foods is a family-owned boba shop that has been operating since the early 90s. I've been coming here with my husband for years and still remember the candy containers that lined the walls and colorful handwritten menu. Although the inside has undergone a makeover, the charm of the shop and flavor of the drinks remains the same in my opinion. It's also one of the few boba shops open late (even though they close earlier than they did back in the day). The lychee milk tea and white almond milk tea always hit the spot for me. They use finely crushed ice, which I find more pleasant than giant ice cubes because you don't lose out on the amount of drink you're getting and still get a cold drink. Their popcorn chicken is also the best I've had from a boba shop. They also recently added Taiwanese pork buns to their menu and I hope they keep it! If you're craving classic flavors and bit of nostalgia, Wonderful Foods in the place to go.

Google
Chewy tapioca boba, wide selection of non-caffeinated drinks and extras (tea eggs, anyone?) Grab-n-go is strongly suggested by the sterile interior — there's very little furniture to encourage lingering Plastic lids on the drinks tend to leak — please consider boba standard seals

Google
Got the taro smoothie with boba (not taro bubble tea) and some pickled/preserved plum from their candy section (one side of the candy selection is your typical candy shop stuff and the other side is traditional Chinese preserved fruit/candy). The boba was cooked well but for a taro “smoothie” i wish it was creamier. It’s basically cooked taro blended with ice (and a little milk?) but they should up the milk ratio.

Google
Great selection of caffeinated and non-caffeinated drinks, as well as fresh fruit beverages. Plus, popular snacks like popcorn chicken, fries, onion rings, and more!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite boba places in the city! It was recommended to me by a friend who grew up in San Francisco, and it is authentic Taiwanese boba drinks. What I love most about their drinks is that you can taste the strength of the tea and the natural ingredients they use in their drinks (not artificial flavorings). The drinks that I always come back to are the lychee milk tea and the winter melon milk tea with boba at 100% sweetness (I usually do 75% at other places, but 100% is great here). The popcorn chicken is also really delicious and the crispy fried basil ties everything together! This shop is more for to-go orders, as there are only 2 benches inside - and no tables. However, it is an open and bright space.

Yelp
I've been hesitant to try boba tea shops in this area, but after walking by this spot many times, I finally decided to give it a shot today. The shorter line was a rare, so I marched right in and ordered a classic iced black milk tea--my go-to for gauging a shop's quality. First impressions were promising. The colors of the drink looked right, and service was impressively quick. There was only one staff member working, but she handled the orders efficiently and got the line down within minutes--definitely commendable. The space itself is quite large and spacious, but it only has two benches and no tables. While that might work for grab-and-go customers, a few tables would be nice for those who want to sit and enjoy their drinks or something from their food menu. As for the milk tea itself, this is where my excitement tapered off. It didn't quite match what I grew up drinking on the East Coast or in Miami. The tea had a very generic taste, almost like a premixed base rather than a freshly brewed tea. On top of that, the drink was overly sweet, leaving an artificial aftertaste that lingered a bit too long for my liking. It seems like this place caters more to those who enjoy sweeter, flavored drinks rather than focusing on the depth and quality of the tea itself. While the efficiency and setup are solid, the drink itself wasn't quite what I was looking for.

Yelp
My friends and I came here on a weekday afternoon and were able to order immediately. Besides the beautiful neon lights displaying the name of the boba place, there were only a couple of benches on the side and no other decorations. I ordered a classic black milk tea with boba. The black milk tea had an interesting coffee taste/flavor in my opinion, but the boba was a good, chewy texture. There are different teas and drinks that I would love to come and try in the future!

Yelp
Updated menu (3 pics), new ordering tablet, and decor. Drinks are still excellent! Best drinks 1) Jasmine Green Milk Tea, 100% sweetness, regular ice, and regular boba 2) Classic Black Milk Tea, 100% sweetness, regular ice 3) Watermelon slushy

Yelp
Grab and go spot! I was craving popcorn chicken late at night and came across this spot in the Sunset. They offer lots of different drinks - I got the wintermelon and it hit the spot. Popcorn chicken was juicy and crispy, super solid!
google avatar

Yelp
Solid boba shop with a ton of flavors! This reminds me of the old school, no-frills boba spots. I tried the oatmeal flavor ...wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it's more of a malted milk drink (think Horlicks). The less sweet option was perfect for me! I also tried my friend's longan tea and was surprised to find real longan inside. They have a few food options as well (popcorn chicken, rice cakes, lobster/squid balls).
google avatar

Yelp
New year, same great drinks. My go to place when I want a fresh fruit slush. Today I got mango strawberry and it was perfectly blended with no big chunks of ice and the sweetness level was spot on. Service was quick and the women behind the counter were pleasant. Benches inside for sitting and plenty of paid public parking and other shops around. Take cash, card, and tap to pay.
google avatar

Katie L.

Yelp
I love their selection of non-caffeinated drinks. I've tried the honey lemon (hot) with boba and the honey with almond jello. Both were really good. Also the popcorn chicken was tasty!
google avatar

Angelina Z.

Yelp
Infinite boba flavors to choose from! The sesame milk tea was more grainy than I had expected. Would probably get a fruit tea next time.

Yelp
New vibes pointing to a recent remodel. Very clean looking but it feels a little sterile currently with the lack of decor. This is my longtime favorite after dinner spot for fresh fruit boba tea & smoothies in the sunset district. I've tried almost all their drinks over the years, even the durian & avocado. If you're not sure what to get, I'd just ask what is the best seasonal fruit they have right now and get a boba / smoothie of that.

Yelp
We went here on a stroll looking for a place to drink and stumbled upon this cute little store. It was very clean and nice. There weren't much seating but it was fine since we were just going to be in and out. The customer service was very nice and the cashier helped me out with any questions that I had. I asked if they had any milk alternatives and she told me they did! They had oat and almond for substitutes. The drinks that we got were the matcha latte and the winter melon milk tea. Both of the drinks were unfortunately disappointing :( The matcha latte was incredibly bland and had no flavor at all. It felt like I was drinking milk with hints of strawberry bits. I feel like the drink would've been better if there was a stronger matcha flavor and it sweetened a bit more. It's sad because the prices for the drinks were steep. The winter melon milk tea was also questionable as well since the drink was not opaque. This could be because of the alternative milk. The thing is, even after tasting it, the drink still tasted weird. It was oddly watered down and didn't really taste like winter melon milk tea. Overall, not sure if I would return because both drinks were not right. Maybe I will try something else but I'm not sure if I would risk it since the prices were steep.

Yelp
Wow they remodeled! I've been coming here since I was a kid. One thing that hasn't changed is their classic black milk tea. I love how you can actually taste the tea here. I got the classic black milk tea without any adjustments because back then, you couldn't adjust it. But it was a little sweet so the next time I come, I'll ask for 50% sweetness.
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
Pudding milk tea was delicious and hit the spot! Oolong milk tea was kind of diluted flavor but good level of sweetness. Milk tea came out very fast. Popcorn chicken took a long time and it would have been nice if they told us it was going to take 20 minutes but was good!
google avatar

Kimberly C.

Yelp
If you come here, please stick to the Lychee Jasmine drink because the other drinks to not meet standards for quality boba. The location is in a prime spot, but I didn't enjoy my drink where I didn't finish it (which never happens).
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
This is my go to place when I want to get Boba. Because they have fresh fruit slush. The boba is chewy and soft with the right amount of sweetness. I order the watermelon slush boba or the cantaloupe slush boba. The service is pretty fast and they make it when you order it. The place is pretty modern but they don't really have any seats except for some benches. It is more of a to go place. I come here when I am in the mood for boba. They are pretty consistent.

Yelp
Based on the reviews in the area, this place seemed to have the best popcorn chicken reviews. So I ordered them from here! I chose to get the chicken with spicy seasoning and it was $10. For the amount I received, it was definitely worth the price. As for the flavor, it was very well seasoned, so much to the point that it became a little too salty for me towards the end of eating all the pieces. But it was crispy, hot, and juicy! The atmosphere of the store was bright and open, and the service was great! Overall, I recommend the popcorn chicken!

Yelp
The space is clean with friendly staff. There is no seating so grab and go. My cousin highly recommended this spot. She says it's her go-to for boba but I have a very different pallet than her. I would give this place a 3 stars but she would give it a 5 so I'm rounding to 4 here as a happy medium. I think this place is good if they have drinks you like. She gets the fruit slushes. I cannot remember what she got, but she says it tastes like pina colada. I got the black milk tea, and it did not taste like I expected. It gave me instant coffee-milk tea edition vibes. When I noted that in their email review message, they did share, "Our black milk tea is a traditional Taiwanese black milk tea, made with premium loose leaf tea that has a coffee under note to it. It does not contain any coffee. Our teas are made with 100% real ingredients and do not contain any artificial flavoring. " I wish they had black tea options as I could only pick between the black milk tea or brown sugar milk. There were the slushes but if I wanted tea (which I did) there were only green tea options, unfortunately. I don't live in SF so I will not come again probably but if you are near the area and like green tea or slushes, or if you are more knowledgeable about traditional Taiwanese black tea, then I say come and try it.

Yelp
This was our favorite boba during our San Fran trip! My wintermelon milk tea was excellent. The boba had a nice chewy texture & subtle sweetness. The salt & pepper chicken was also very yummy. It made the perfect pairing to accompany the start of our journey down highway 1. Highly recommended trying this place out if you're in the area.
google avatar

Evelyn G.

Yelp
I absolutely love their oolong milk tea. I like to pair it with grass jelly. Most boba shops give you the grass jelly in long chunks, but this shop actually nicely chops it up so you get grass jelly in every sip. Service has always been attentive and quick. I haven't tried their other drinks or snacks, but I really recommend the oolong milk tea with grass jelly!
google avatar

Merry K.

Yelp
Never tried Lychee Jasmine tea in the past. So, they actually used fresh lychee in the tea.
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
One of the first boba places in SF! Tastes amazing and the price is good. Pretty empty inside and the service is amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
100% my favorite milk tea place in the bay. I've been coming here for years and I am ALWAYS craving their milk tea with boba. I used to be more adventurous with trying out different things on the menu, but I always just end up choosing their milk tea again because it has the most unique and strong tea flavor. I find that many boba places don't have a strong tea flavor or the tea is too milky, and that's definitely not the case for Wonderful. More than 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Justin R.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this places milk tea as I saw they were inundated with positive reviews, but was unfortunately disappointed with my beverage. Upon walking in we were able to order immediately and the service was nice, they were accommodating and let me know they had non-dairy substitutes of almond and oat for winter melon milk tea! However immediately after seeing the drink placed on the top I questioned it as every winter melon milk tea I have gotten (oat or regular) was always a very different color, being more milky white rather than this coffee looking one. Sure enough the taste portrayed that as well as it tasted more akin to watered down coffee rather than winter melon milk tea, my friend also tried a matcha drink but that tasted like a sugar free alternative. I may try this place again and see if their other milk teas are worth, but definitely would not recommend anyone get their winter melon milk tea.
google avatar

Jamie Z.

Yelp
Best spot for spicy popcorn fried chicken. They add fresh basil and it's unbeatable in flavor, juicyness and crunch! For drinks, I like their grass jelly drink or taro boba.
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Just here to add a quick yes/ditto to everyone saying the popcorn chicken is great. Seasoning/taste reminds me of Shilin Taiwan Street Food fried chicken, which is equally tasty. Come get some.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
This is a very standard boba shop. I appreciate that their menu is very simple and classic drinks. I ordered a classic milk tea with boba and it wasn't amazing but satisfied my milk tea craving. I also ordered popcorn chicken and it was good BUT their kitchen service is extremely slow. I waited 25min for the chicken, which is just ridiculous. I finished my drink before I got my snack and I had to add parking time to the meter.
google avatar

Mattie F.

Yelp
Drinks are alright but the popcorn chicken is amazing! I got the pudding milk tea, guava green tea, and popcorn chicken with medium spice. Pudding milk tea: 4.5/5. Strong tea flavor which I liked, with the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. Good ratio of tea, ice, and pudding. They use crushed ice which melts faster so towards the end of the drink it started to taste a little watered down. Guava green tea: 3/5. Nice green tea flavor but I couldn't really taste the guava in the drink. Popcorn chicken: 5/5 so good! The chicken was super crispy and well-seasoned with the perfect balance of salty, savory, spicy, and slightly sweet. They give lots of fried basil which I like. Good amount of chicken but $10 still seems a little steep. Service was a little slow but I think only two people were working at the time so no big deal. The shop is pretty much only for to go orders, as they only have two benches and no tables. I'll for sure be returning in the near future for their yummy popcorn chicken!

Yelp
An OG boba spot - I've been coming here for over a decade. They recently renovated and it looks bright and modern inside now (all the candy is gone and it's just drinks now). Boba is always fresh and chewy here. I've tried many different drinks and never had one I didn't enjoy. My go to is definitely the red bean smoothie - real red bean and not watered down - soo good!! They take card now and it's street parking. This would've been a 5 star review if not for the increased prices. I ordered a regular red bean smoothie with boba and this cost $7.65.... Insane! It's $7 for the drink and $0.65 for boba. A large would cost $8.65. Some other toppings like the egg pudding is an extra $1. Boba is great, but won't be returning as much due to the increased prices.

Danielle D.

Yelp
Their milk tea is very good, I got mine non dairy. The boba is a good texture but has no flavor. Prices seemed kinda high but you get a decent amount of boba in your drink.
google avatar

Hoang N.

Yelp
Haven't been here for a long time, my first time here was 20+ years ago. Boba nai cha (Pearl milk tea) lol, and I'm not Chinese . Everything looks different, the store has been remodeled , not the OG boba place with those candies machines. I missed that, but drinks are still legit, will definitely come by again .
google avatar

Lele Y.

Yelp
Newly remodeled but still the same Best tapioca in town... really, it's true! Such a local staple in the Sunset District and I've visited plenty of times over the years (like 10 years haha) My go-to is the standard Milk Tea with tapioca~ boba is chewy and flavorful, milk tea is perfectly balanced tea, milk and an additional particular sweetness that I've been told is brown sugar (but don't quote me) --- friends enjoy their fruit blended drinks, thai tea tapioca and taro tapioca --- Almond pudding is a fabulous substitute if you're wanting something than pearls Their newly modeled interior now excludes bulk candy purchase (or maybe this was even before the remodel) which was part of their staple too Gotta give it a try if you're in the area, you won't regret it!
google avatar

Cailie R.

Yelp
The service was great. The lady that took our order and made our drinks was very kind. I had the Thai milk tea with boba and it was delicious. Like the best I've ever had. My mom got the hot honey lemon green tea which was delicious and my dad got the lychee milk tea with boba which was a little bitter but still good. I will definitely be back next time I'm in SF!

Ana L.

Yelp
This place has the best salt and pepper chicken in sf . Very authentic and juicy. Staffs are very nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Nothing changed! I've been going here since 2013 and I'm so glad this shop is still standing. I always get her pudding milk tea and it has not changed since 2013. The taste of the drink still taste like it was 10 years ago and it brings me so much joy when I visit and get drinks from here. It's definitely my favorite boba store in the city.

Jessica Y.

Yelp
I was here last night, and I ordered two very simple things that shouldn't take long. A classic milk tea and popcorn chicken, the perfect combo together right? Unfortunately, this place has changed my mind. The milk tea had this very bitter taste, almost like bitter melon, and don't get me started on the popcorn chicken. I ultimately had to wait 30 minutes for the chicken, and I was so shocked my jaw dropped when I saw how it looked. The chicken was burnt to a crisp, and it was inedibile! I was so so disappointed when I saw how the chicken looked. I didn't even want to take a bite out of it. Food 1/10 The staff. I had this young older gentlemen take my order, but he was certainly not gentleman at all. I ordered the milk tea and chicken, and do you know what he said to my face? He said "why are you so basic you old b**ch". I was shocked by what he said, but I was hungry at that moment so I just let it slide. Staff 0/10 The place itself, is pretty clean but not that clean. I saw trash on the floor and it looked like Chuck E Cheese. Ambiance 3/10 I recommend people never coming to this place.

Luna L.

Yelp
On first arrival to wonderful cafe, the store seemed very lively and the interior matched that vibe. However, upon submitting my order for a watermelon slushy with boba, there were still large ice chunks in the slushy which meant the drink wasn't fully blended, and the boba was hard in the middle, which was a big red flag. The drink was not only subpar, the service was too. In the process of choosing a drink, a middle aged woman with blonde hair didn't seem satisfied with me taking a bit to order the drink, and upon asking for a recommendation, she simply spouted an answer, seeming unwilling and unhappy to talk to me. While waiting for my drink, I also heard said woman yelling at her employees on what to do better publicly. Doing that in the back rooms? That's fine, but in front of customers? No. That incident also inclined me to write this review as a toxic work environment isn't supportive of young adult workers. Overall, the drink was subpar but what really wasn't okay was the toxic work environment, along with an incident of reprimanding employees publicly.

Yelp
5 STARS for this spot being the OG of BOBA shops!!! Had my very first BOBA NAI CHA (milk tea tapioca) drink from here. It was the late 90's/early 2000's...my aunt would get my sisters, cousins & I each one and we were INSTANTLY HOOKED!!! Their milk tea has a very distinctive taste, unlike any other shop- somewhat bold with almost a herbal taste (imo) and it's very good! Tapioca balls are decent and bouncy when fresh and the staff is very friendly! :) My favorite lately: Avocado smoothie! P.S. I miss the Sweet Factory vibes with the candy by the pound and the tea eggs they used to offer!
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
This is one of the original boba spots in San Francisco and I've been coming here since college. They use to also sell candy by the pound but they stopped after their renovations a couple years ago and just stuck with making drinks and snacks which I think a lot of people from San Francisco is use to their drink recipes, there's a nostalgia there. They open later than most boba places and I think their salt n pepper chicken is one of the best, it's meaty, crispy, spicy, sweet, and flavorful plus it's topped off with some fried basil. For drinks I like their oolong milk tea, they make it sweeter and it taste different from all the other boba places i tried. Honestly I haven't tried I bad drink from this place, their drinks won't blow you away but every drink they make is solid. The lady that's always there making our drinks is always really nice too.
google avatar

Carrie L.

Yelp
My favorite OG boba! Gotta get a watermelon slush with boba. It's a must try if you've never had it
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Wonderfuls will always have a special place in my heart. My family and I have been coming here religiously since before they moved to their current location lol. Everyone knows they have THE BEST popcorn chicken in town (don't forget to ask for extra spicy) and their drinks never miss. The service is always super friendly even when they're backed up on busy nights... I do like the new renovations I just wish they still offered their tea eggs and candy. But their new menu display is much more pleasing to the eye and easier to navigate through. Will always highly recommend
google avatar

Cathy C.

Yelp
Best Boba drink in San Francisco! I highly recommend this place! Until now we have to come at least once a week to have my fave drink! I am proud to say that I'm one of their fanatic customers!
google avatar

Lilian Z.

Yelp
Maaan I missed when they had the candies and $3 boba, heavy on the tea, light on the sweet. I've been here a few times since reopening after their remodel and I have to admit I'm a little disappointed in the changes they've made. I thought it was really cool how they sold the candies by weight, as there aren't any of those near here. Their drinks also used to be really authentic with a heavy tea taste, just like those in Taiwan. Their slushes used to be very organic and tasted like whatever they said it was. This time however, their drinks were still good, but it now definitely tastes a bit fake and super sweet, even with half sweet adjustment. Not to mention their prices have risen significantly which if their drinks were more authentic and less powder, I would see valid. However at nearly $7 a cup with a topping, I found it difficult to come back as often as I did before. I got a jasmine gmt with egg pudding as a topping and my friend got the peach green tea. Both my friend and I agreed that it wasn't very worth it as there are many boba options in the sunset. Their snacks are at an even steeper price point; we did try their popcorn chicken a few weeks ago and it was not it at all. We may be back since it is very nostalgic but pretty much only for that reason. An extra star from my dog Hero since they did offer him a treat when we came by!
google avatar

Andrew V.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 25 years. The yummiest smoothie type boba. ( fresh Strawberry ) Popcorn chicken is stunning with fried basil. I like the mom that works here she's awesome. And I love that they take card now. My happy place in sunset
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
Cute spot with super friendly staff! We wanted to check out the candy bar and hot snacks but it seems like they completely took out the candy bar and their kitchen also isn't open in the afternoons. The shop is pretty empty with no tables or seating. Got a thai tea with agar boba, the tea was really yummy but for some reason there were lychee jelly pieces in the tea as well, also got a 50% sweet tea and it tasted like 0% sweet. They also don't use sealed tops for the drinks.

M C.

Yelp
Nothing beats the a cold milk tea with boba from Wonderful foods. The original! I will always stop here if I'm in the City. It is unmatched!
google avatar

Benny C.

Yelp
It looks like the place had undergone a renovation and so the entire shopped looked empty, but clean. I had the kumquat green tea and it was super refreshing! The tea had hints of citrus and blended really well with the natural flavor of the green tea. The barista at the counter was super nice as well. My brother got a papaya milkshake and THAT tasted absolutely delicious. It tasted like a papaya in puree form, smooth and not overly sweet with some fragrant undertones. Overall, solid spot!
google avatar

Renee L.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 20 years since I was a little kid, and it is still one of my favorite places for boba. This place has the best fresh fruit smoothies. My go-tos are the fresh taro, avocado, and red bean smoothies.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
I found myself at Wonderful Dessert & Cafe again, since it was the only boba shop opened late night in the area. Since it was late night, there were plenty of street parking in front of the store. I ordered the jasmine milk tea with boba again, it was very creamy with a very subtle tea taste, but this time it was overly sweet and syrupy. It tasted similar to how I remembered it from about 4 years ago. The boba is a bit on the chewier side, and I feel like the cup has definitely gotten smaller while the price increased.
google avatar

Jules W.

Yelp
I got a drink here today and it was a busy day. I ordered the jasmine milk tea with boba which is my usual order, and I think they forgot to add the tea and syrup. It's just milk and boba with no tea and sweetness. Will update if they don't mess up next time.
