We made our way to Wonderland on a Wednesday night -- right smack in the middle of the OB farmers market (4-8pm on Newport) -- and the energy was electric.
On the grass in the little elbow of OB, you could hear drums beating, people dancing, folks gathering -- the weekly drum circle fires up just behind the market near the end of Newport.
It's that kind of night where the street feels alive before you even step in.
Inside Wonderland, you can still catch the game from almost any spot -- TVs tucked in quietly so you don't lose the vibe. We've never had trouble finding a seat, even when it's slammed.
So we start with the Honey Whipped Goat Cheese -- that creamy cool tang of goat cheese whipped light, then piled with sweet roasted squash, pomegranate seeds, candied pecans, and a drizzle of brown-butter balsamic. The textures are wild -- silky cheese, crunchy pecans, juicy seeds. It doesn't feel pretentious -- it just is.
Then the Killer Nachos (steak version) came out. Crispy chips under heaps of melted mixed cheese, jalapeños, pico, black beans, sour cream, avocado mash -- and real chunks of steak (not scraps). It's messy in the best way, meant for sharing, laughing, digging in.
We sipped the Fire Dancer, too -- Del Valle reposado, blood orange, lime, agave, just enough habanero heat to keep your attention. It feels equal parts cocktail and moment.
By the time we left, we could still hear the drums from outside, people dancing in the grass, laughter and percussion drifting through OB. You walk out feeling like you were part of something -- the food was great, the drink was solid, and the setting? It's pretty hard to beat.
