I've dined at many South Indian vegetarian restaurants that were very much out in the sticks and offered a marginal dine-in experience, but this one was in an urban locale not far from Vanderbilt and a nice enough place to dine in. It was not crowded when I arrived, but large groups began arriving by the time I was finished.
The sort of cuisine they offer goes beyond the average Indian restaurants and includes various lentil-based specialties. I deferred on getting a dosa (crepe) and instead got an ildi appetizer (steamed rice and lentil cakes) and the channa bhatura, which was labeled as a house special. My idli came in a set of three, with a tasty soup and a coconut chutney that wasn't as flavorful. The bhatura is a fried bread and theirs is one of the largest I've seen. It arrives puffed up at around the size of half of a basketball, though you'll deflate it quickly in the process of eating. The accompanying chickpea curry was spicy, but not overwhelmingly so, and teeming with flavor. I wished it had come with a few more accoutrements (onions, fried chili peppers, yogurt, or mixed pickle are common inclusions for this sort of thing). I had a chai unsweetened, which was fine but nothing special.
And overall, it was good food and one of the few places you're likely to see this cuisine in the region, but not the best I've ever had.
