The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Every Portland neighborhood needs its anchor coffee shop, and the 2021 arrival Woodstock Cafe is auditioning to fill that role. Owner Katherine Harris founded Upper Left Roasters, and the spacious, bright Woodstock Café brews the local roaster’s beans exclusively. The expected espresso drinks are supplemented by a small-but-polished tea list, along with the cafe’s golden milk, a bracing concoction with cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, and turmeric. The food menu includes bagels from Henry Higgins and vegan Shoofly muffins." - Nathan Williams

Yelp
This is a deaf operated cafe which I think is really awesome. You don't have to know sign language to order here, they do anawesome job of reading lips and there's also a microphone that transcribes your words to text on a screen. The inside is pretty standard, lots of tables and places to plug in. I order the London Fog each time I go in and it's been made perfectly each time. The baristas do such a great job!

Yelp
Go here! Latte was great, had a nice almond ring, and both indoor and outdoor seating that is perfect for June weather. Also, the staff are deaf and hard of hearing. They have tech where you speak and it translates it to text for them, so you don't need to know sign language. Super neat to support our local deaf community while getting your coffee spark on for the day.

Yelp
I didn't realize this place was about a block further down Woodstock than I go so I had no idea they were over here until sandwich week. It looked really good so I wanted to give it a try. It's a cute little place with some parking in the lot and street as well. They do have a microphone for translation, but I didn't use it because like many, I use my hands when I talk anyway (not sign language). Super friendly service. The place is small, but was enough for people to get together to play games. I loved the sandwich. The bread was so good and it was more like a fresh made sandwich. You know the type you would make if you had all the ingredients and could REALLY make yourself a sandwich. I really enjoyed it and it was a little different than the other sandwiches I get. Now that I know I need to visit more often.

Yelp
Very pleased! We ordered ahead at the last minute, arrived 10 minutes before our food was promised and waited only 1 minute before it was done. Really surprising sandwich with high savory and a touch of sweetness that was a delightful contrast in textures and flavors. The service was bright and prompt with an eager smile.

Yelp
This cafe was down the street from The Heist food cart pod which we stumbled upon. It wasn't until we were ordering our coffee that it was also an ASL friendly coffee shop. The barista took our order using their speech assisted device which translated our words onto a small monitor. I thought that was the coolest thing! I later found out that this place is a hub for ASL students and the Deaf community which I think is amazing to have. The coffee also turned out great! Bookmarked this spot to visit when I'm in the area!

Yelp
My new favorite coffee spot! The service was amazing, and my coffee was delicious. There's indoor and outdoor seating... all around a wonderful, safe space.

Yelp
I had a lovely experience at Woodstock cafe today. Woodstock is an asl friendly non profit cafe. The environment was so welcoming and inclusive. I wish there were more business like them in Oregon!!The employees were so friendly and accommodating especially since my asl was a bit rusty. They have a wide selection of breakfast and lunch menu items as well as pastries, coffee, and tea. Some people were signing their order and others spoke. They also have an iPad to place your order through. It seemed like all the baristas knew asl and a few were hearing so if you don't know asl don't let that deter you from coming here. And if you do know asl or are deaf you should absolutely check it out!

Yelp
Amazing experience! The staff accommodated our entire American Sign Language class from Lakeridge high school so we could come and order food and drinks from them practicing what we have been learning. They were all so patient with us and made the experience absolutely wonderful. The coffee was great, chai delicious, and the kids loved a lot of of the food that they had. We can't brag enough about this café!

Yelp
Woodstock Cafe has new staff as a haven and friendly hangout for sign language communicators. I stopped by for the reopening for their new project with Cymaspace - https://www.yelp.com/biz/cymaspace-portland. There were several families there, all ages including college age, and a lot of happiness. Cymaspace has partnered with Stumptown to train deaf baristas to operate Woodstock Cafe. In the coffee community, Stumptown training is considered the finest and Stumptown-trained baristas are favored in hiring by all shops. They have a pad computer kiosk at the counter and a placard for pointing for non-signers. So if you are hearing like me, ordering is easy. The coffee was excellent, they have alt-dairy options, beans, and some more interesting pastries in my photo. They are keeping up their Yelp listing on hours. If you have deaf family members or friends, spread the word!

Yelp
We've been in a rut, going to the same places over and over, so we've decided to make it a project to choose new-to-us coffee shops to visit in our area. We love coffee and treats, and it's been a fun project so far. When we chose this place, we didn't know that it was a sign language cafe. That was a nice surprise (what a great idea!) and the staff were welcoming. I'm not sure, but it seemed like the man was training someone new at the register. I ordered two coffees and an everything bagel. (I could see regular bagels through the window of the pastry case). When the bagel came, it was not what I wanted, it was a bagel "galette" instead of "just" a bagel. Truthfully, I wasn't wild about it, but I ate it rather than try to explain how I had wanted a bagel with cream cheese. That's a small thing, and being there for coffee was pleasant enough. It wasn't crowded and it has a cheery relaxed hippie-type atmosphere. We'll come back, but if i get a baked good I don't expect, I'll find a way to say so....that's on me :)

Yelp
My teen met some friends here to practice ASL for class and I decided to hang out. I got a salted caramel apple latte and caprese panini. I was able to order and pay through a tablet. Other ordering options include signing with the baristas or speaking and there's a tablet with microphone that does speech to text. Food and drink were served promptly and looked every bit as amazing as they tasted. There's a plentiful variety of food and drink. There's also a lot of seating, both inside and out. Ambience is lovely. Soothing music plays and there isn't the conversational overwhelm you may deal with at hearing cafes. Such a soothing vibe, and their Instagram shows knit & crochet evenings, so I'd love to make visits more regular to this gem!

Yelp
I would give them all of my money if I could. Amazing. Especially love the owner and the one with tattoos. They make the best lavender lattes in Portland. And the food is SO BOMB. I have lived around the corner from Woodstock cafe for many years, watching the changes in ownership and staff. It took a lot to keep wanting to go back and try each new owner. However, with the new ownership and being a deaf/ASL learning cafe, it has become my favorite neighborhood spot.. Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere, amazing staff who are always friendly and truly welcoming, not to mention the fun games and puzzles. So happy to have coffee shop I know I can always go to for a great experience and bite to eat! See you again SO soon.

Yelp
Loved this place, but could use some improvement. Drip coffee was a little watery. Also the breakfast sandwich was awful. Sweet and oily and tasted strange. On the plus side the customer service was good and so were their scones.

Yelp
The Panini sandwiches were really delicious and affordably priced. The counter person was awesome. They had Jenga and this rubber band air hockey game that a family was having fun with. I enjoyed it and will definitely be back.

Yelp
People where nice however the chicken I got tasted spoiled, a few minutes after taking a few bites, I started to feel sick, I ended up tossing it, few hours down the road my stomach is upset and I am not feeling the best.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and equally amazing staff!! Definitely my new go-to spot. Lots of outdoor seating.

Yelp
Nice little coffee spot that serves Upper Left Roasters coffee. They might actually be owned by them or have some kind of business partnership. They have a few breakfast food options like bagels and pastries. Lots of focus on vegan items, hello Portland. A few indoor and outdoor seating options.

Yelp
Really wonderful breakfast spot for a quick treat before the workday. Great service. The were super friendly and helpful. They even taught us some sign language. Great food. Great coffee. Loved the ambiance. We sat outside on this spring day which was a wonderful start to the day. The bagel galette was amazing. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Wonderful and accessible community cafe that with delicious food and drink selection. Staff was very accommodating. I will be back frequently!

Yelp
Lovely place, but why am I waiting in line for 30 minutes for one order to be fulfilled when the store is filled. I feel so bad for this barista doing everything!!!

Yelp
They make it look like they have the same breakfast sandwich First Cup used to have on the menu, but it's a total ripoff. Half the amount of egg. Only half the sandwich has a sliver of Ottos ham(I'm skeptical it is from Ottos), and the bagel selection was non existent. And for $8.75?! On top of it the atmosphere after the remodel is just sterile and unwelcoming.

Yelp
This is a great place with really nice people. I highly recommend trying them out. The chocolate chip cookies are amazing and so are the lattes.

Yelp
The maple tumeric latte with their house hazelnut milk is one of the best coffee drinks in the city. I hope it becomes a permanent drink and not just seasonal. Tumeric is the gift that keeps on giving, and well, maple is yum. The remodel is fresh and welcoming. The windows offer great light. There are different seating options, including a small patio and a large bench out front. And the people are friendly.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS SOOOO GOOD !! I will never wait in line down the street again. This place is cute - YOU CAN SIT INSIDE - and they make a delicious nut milk in house ! It's my new fave ! Thank you for being here !

Yelp
Great little Cafe with a chill vibe. It's clean, it's spacious, they have outdoor seating. The food is great. I got the avocado toast. It's yummy and aesthetically pleasing. My husband liked his matcha tea as well.

Yelp
Chill local coffeeshop serving Upper Left Roasting coffee, Henry Higgins bagels. Staff have always been great too! 'Nuff said

Yelp
I was so glad a new coffee place reopened in this spot. It has the best patio seating if all the coffee houses on Woodstock. Coffee and tea are both excellent, and the pastries are all vegan. A little room for improvement: a cup of drip coffee is $3, yet they still charge $1 for a refill. At that price point, at least the first refill should be free for dine-in customers IMO.

Yelp
Great coffee, great service, and amazing avocado toast! So happy with the new ownership. What a great place for our neighborhood!
