Yelp
I had read an article years back on the award winning bread of Wu Pao Chun, but never thought I'd get to taste it. Fast forward a bit and while planning a trip to Taiwan, I rediscovered the existence of this famous bread. I was so sad when I realized I forgot to go in Taipei, but then I realized that the original store is in Kaohsiung. So despite only being in Kaohsiung for a day, we made sure to stop by the bakery.
Even as you're walking by the store, you can smell all the wonderful breads being baked inside. And as you walk in, you're greeted by an overwhelmingly beautiful display of fresh breads, all which look and seem delicious! They were handing out samples as you walked in, and you could tell the bread was high quality.
Unfortunately, I was only traveling with one other person, and you can only keep bread for so long. So we had to somewhat control ourselves and not buy everything. This meant that we didn't get to try all of their award winning breads.
We ended up buying:
+Litchi Rose Champion Bread (NT 350): this was the bread I had read about and wanted to try out the most. They only had a full loaf available so expect to eat it for a while. I was so impressed by it. The bread is fragrant, and has this amazing chewy/fluffy (Sorry for the lack of proper bread terminology) texture. The litchi is flavorful, and the rose is more subtle and complimentary. Definitely get this bread!
+Taiwan Longan with Red Wine Bread (NT 199 for half loaf): this is the original award winning bread, and it was also delicious, although after having the first bread, this one was not as amazing. I did feel like you could enjoy the texture of the bread a little better though, because there were less longan in it than the litchi.
+Melon Bread (NT 30): after eating the European-style breads, the texture of the melon bread just seemed dry and uninteresting. A bit disappointing, but could also be because we didn't get around to trying it until the next day.
+Matcha Melon Bread (NT 45): this was the Kaohsiung store special, so we wanted to try it. But like the melon bread, it just wasn't impressive.
It's amazing how something like bread can bring someone happiness, but that's actually what the Wu Pao Chun champion breads did for me. Yes the prices are a bit on the more expensive side for Taiwan, but I think it is well worth it! If I'm ever in Taiwan again, I would absolutely make the effort to visit one of their bakeries to try some more bread.
On a final note, some Yelp reviews said it is cash only, but I was able to pay with card!
