Xie Bao Review - Flushing - New York - The Infatuation

"The mere thought of crab roe sends us into a moony daydream. Glorious crab roe. Beautiful, soft orange dollops of crab roe. Sorry, where were we? If you can relate, you’re going to love Xie Bao, a stall in Flushing’s bustling New York Food Court that puts this one amazing ingredient—a Shanghainese specialty—front and center in many of its incredible dishes. If you order just one thing at the counter (the first one on your left), make it the silky, comforting crab roe over noodles. Like multiple dishes at Xie Bao, it’s served with wood ear mushrooms, vinegar, pickled veg, and a soy egg—and there are also complimentary cups of lightly sweet, lightly floral jujube tea. The add-ons are welcome, but the thin noodles are just as excellent adorned only with buttery roe sauce. It’s a testament to Xie Bao’s all-around quality that—if you order correctly—many of the supporting-act ingredients shine just as bright. The satisfying hunks of pork skin in a pot of chicken broth, for example, or the flaky yellow croaker in noodle soup. photo credit: Alex Staniloff photo credit: Alex Staniloff You’ll receive a buzzer to let you know when your meal is ready, or—depending on how aggressively you ordered—when each part of your meal is ready. Every time it goes off feels like microdosing Christmas morning, as dishes like roe-stuffed meatballs, pork-studded zongzi, and crab roe mooncakes start accumulating in front of you. The food court is uncrowded enough that you’ll find a place to sit, but not so empty that you’ll raise eyebrows among the diners eating lunch, as you try to fit all the black plastic trays on your table, like a horizontal game of Jenga. In case you need more space to spread out, consider Xie Bao’s second location in a strip mall in Edison, NJ. Food Rundown photo credit: Alex Staniloff Crab Roe Noodles The sauce is the perfect balance of salty, sweet, and creamy and the noodles have a lovely chew. You can even get free noodle refills, if you ask nicely. photo credit: Alex Staniloff Crab Roe Meatballs Pockets of salty roe are buried like treasure in the center of two gently molded pork meatballs. (Are we absolutely positive this isn’t what awaits us within the Earth’s innermost core? If not, start digging.) We also love the star anise notes in the thickened, slightly sweet sauce, and the crisp-tender bok choy. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Crab Roe & Chicken Soup Pork Skin Pot Floating in a pot of light but meaty chicken broth, the gelatinous pork skin absorbs so much flavor. Get this deluxe, restorative dish if you feel some sniffles coming on. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Yellow Croaker Noodles Chopped pickled greens add brightness to perfectly cooked noodles and tender, buttery fish. We love this Shanghai specialty as a contrast to the crab, but if you want to maximize the amount of crab roe per bite you consume here, order the yellow croaker and crab roe-soaked rice. photo credit: Molly Fitzpatrick Crab Roe Xiao Long Bao The crab roe mooncakes and spring rolls are more gimmicky than delicious, but the only dish we’ve actively disliked at Xie Bao is their soup dumplings—the wrappers were a little undercooked, the filling a little gritty." - Molly Fitzpatrick

I was in the mood for some Asian dumplings, and this spot happened to be right on my way home from work, so I figured, why not? I walked in and was greeted right away. The server kindly helped me order at the self-service kiosk, which was a nice touch. I went with the pork dumplings and the vegetable soup. My order took about 10 minutes, which felt just right since the place wasn’t crowded. Everything came out fresh, hot, and steamy, comfort food energy all the way. The presentation was simple but clean and inviting. The pork dumplings were the standout: delicately wrapped with a firm bite and just the right amount of seasoning. Super flavorful, not your average takeout dumplings. Definitely a step up. The vegetable soup was tasty too. I wasn’t a big fan of the fried tofu pieces, but the broth had good flavor and the noodles were cooked perfectly, soft but not mushy. All in all, solid experience. Worth a stop if you’re craving something warm, flavorful, and comforting on a weekday.

I wasn't even hungry (well not by normal people's standards) when I came in with friends, but one bite and my stomach made sure there was plenty of room for each and every item that we ordered! The chicken with spicy sauce was a good level of spicy. Spicy but not too spicy where it overpowered the flavor. All of the dumplings that we got were delicious, with the Seafood Shumai a unique flavor that I really enjoyed as well. We've tried a lot of dumpling places all over New Jersey and even in some of the most heavily Asian populated cities like Edison, Edgewater, and Fort Lee and this location is one of the absolute best so far. The parking lot is a bit small but there were a few spaces available on a Sunday. #Dumplings #Edison

Google
Order on the device and you get some very good soup dumpling. Their noodle is also solid. I think peanut and wonton was also good as well. Will def come back. Price point not expensive at all

I used to come to this place for years pre covid. This place was always bustling with customers during both peak hours and off. Papers used to be handed out with numbers as the Chinese staff (who virtually spoke no English) would call out to the group of people waiting to get in. It was extremely good and at a fair price back then. Emphasis on WAS. I came here for the first time post covid and everything is so mid. Not bad, just extremely average, subpar food. Very disappointing for somebody who adored this place. I assume management or ownership changed. Everything comes out in trays and take out containers with plastic packaged utensils. The whole experience now seems so cheap and low tier. Their birds nest dish that used to be amazing literally just tastes like white persons gelatinous chicken noodle soup over crispy noodles. The restaurant itself visually looks better and the +2 stars is for the nice man trying his best when serving. But this place at “peak” hours isn’t even full anymore … and that says a lot of food. The quality has gone down. To leave 2 stars when comparing it to what it was might be unfair but if you’re keeping the old signage … Im going to have some level of expectations. I had a ton of leftovers and I’m not interested in taking it home at all. Wont be coming back here again as there are better options for soup dumplings out there. Will come back if it goes back to how it used to be pre covid. I miss the old food.

Google
Came here as almost a last resort. Service was odd. Plenty of seating. Self-order your food and drinks and someone brings it over a whole 10 feet at the most. Cheap thin chopsticks, thin plastic forks, spoons and bowls. No complimentary hot tea like most Chinese places. Takeout soy sauce packets. Place was empty when we arrived. When we left, two other tables were occupied of maybe 7 total. Definitely not a popular spot with locals. Most of food was okay. Soup dumplings tasted like the chef forgot to put salt in the filling. Noodles tasted like they were only seasoned with soy sauce. Pretty disappointing. Won't be coming back here

✨Wu’s Shanghai Xiaolong serves some of the best soup dumplings around! The wrappers are delicate, the broth is rich, and the filling is juicy and flavorful. Great service and a cozy atmosphere make it a must-visit for xiaolongbao lovers. Highly recommended! First Choice in Edison! Will COME BACK AGAIN!

Google
Used to be very good, like 7 years ago, but maybe changed owner or something, because the food here now tastes like it was from frozen. They even covered the window so you could not look into the kitchen to see dumplings being made fresh, which you could before. And it really shows too, because it was always packed and crowded back in the day, with line outside the door, but now there is barely anyone here on a weekends It kinda makes me sad. Used to be my go-to back in college

⸻ Disappointed — Not What It Used to Be I visited this location last night expecting the same quality they were known for back in the day, especially since this was their original spot. Unfortunately, it’s changed for the worse. The food and overall experience didn’t live up to the past standards. Everything is self serve now and lost the tradition dine in restaurant with service. Dumplings tasted like frozen ones heated up in a microwave. There are two other locations: one on US-1. Lao Wu authentic is a better spot hands down. Another one in north Brunswick as well. I will never come back here. Ever.

Yelp
I first started going here during covid when they were take out only. I sat there once and the vibes were completely different. Touch screen to order then you sit. Can be packed and takeout has never seized to fail me My friend from Beijing said this has been the best spot she found in the states and is better than 90% of the spots she has gone to back home. Also said the custard buns are the best she's ever had I have been told that the storefront in New Brunswick isn't as good as the OG

Yelp
Not a fan. Was a different menu pre covid and we really liked it. We got: Fried crispy noodles Spicy pork Shanghai noodles Pork moon cake Beef scallion pancake Spicy savory tofu XLBs XLBs were the highlight but like tasty moments better. Wife enjoyed the tofu most and thought it was a good price.

Yelp
This place interior is small but cozy. The server said the restaurant went under a remodel during / after Covid initially happened. Service was ok . They very much promote self service here as there are POS systems you can walk up to and order . The selling point here is definitely soup dumplings. They were made well and filled with the right amount of soup . The other food is meh at best. I also had the cold noodles with " peanut butter sauce " the noodles were really mushy and it was an overwhelming taste of peanut butter , but not in a good way . The soup dumplings though, were pretty good . I had a few of the pork and crab soup dumplings. This place I think is now relegated to a soup dumplings place and not a Chinese restaurant if that makes sense. I've had it ,it was ok but I don't think I'd come back type of place .

Yelp
The food is good but I was not expecting food to be served in a toxic Styrofoam bowls or waxed paper bowl. this is the only Chinese restaurant that doesn't serve tea. Next time I go there, I'm bringing my own bowl, utensils and tea.

Yelp
Came here in July with friends who speak Chinese and they ordered everything so sadly cannot tell you what I ordered BUT I can tell you I loved my meal! We did family style and between four of us there was a lot of food to fill us. The pricing is phenomenal, portion size huge, and food pretty good! I'd like to come back again and order some more soup dumplings and spicier dishes

Yelp
TLDR: okay, but no longer the best spot in south jersey. Came here before COVID and during COVID and always had an amazing time. Their food was always top notch and was made the 45 minute drive worth it. However, coming back for the first time since the change made me regret the drive. This place is now fully self serve. You order the food on a tablet (regardless of dine in or take out) and the food gets brought to you. Soup dumplings: skins are thicker and flavor is not there. Very disappointing. Beef scallion pancakes: flakey but lacked flavor and not as crispy as it used to be. Spicy pork wontons: there is no peanut butter flavor or any spiciness to this at all. The sauce actually looked watered down. This was always my most anticipated dish coming to this location, not anymore. Stir fried udon noodles: very oily and not as flavorful Hate to say this but I would not recommend coming here anymore. If you are absolutely craving soup dumplings, and are willing to drive, go to Old Shanghai Soup Dumplings in Palisades Park.

Yelp
Tasty food at reasonable prices, especially when you factor in there's no tip! We were afraid of a wait, but when we arrived around 1230 on a weekend there were actually 2 free tables. The guy working there instructed us to place orders at the terminal, and mentioned its all "self serve and so there's no tip". That definitely works for me. Food came out fairly quick. Portions were bigger than I expected given the price. Favorites were the spicy shanghai pork noodles (which actually weren't that spicy, but were quite flavorful, especially with the egg); and the beef appetizer dish, which had an ample amount of cilantro. I wasn't the biggest fan of the beef noodle soup (was a little flavorless compared to other places). Dumplings were okay, but not sure that I would order them again.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a Friday night. It was not too busy. This was the first time I came here since they renovated. They don't really have a wait staff so you have to order from a touchscreen tablet. We ordered the pork juicy buns, the pan fried pork buns, pork and vegetable wontons in spicy sauce, and wu's favorite topping over crispy noodles. We also ordered the sweet fermented rice and tofu for dessert but they accidentally gave us the rice balls in wine sauce so we got an extra free dessert! Everything was good but if I'm being honest I thought the food was better before the renovations. The juicy pork buns were decent but the skin kept ripping. The pan fried pork buns were crisp and the meat inside was flavorful and tasty. The pork wontons in spicy sauce were always one of my favorite items. This time it was good but I feel like the portion size shrank and it was a little less flavorful than it used to be. Lastly the crispy noodles topped with their favorite topping was extremely disappointing. The crispy noodles did not taste fresh and the sauce didn't have much flavor. For the desserts...both were very solid. The sweet fermented rice with tofu had just the right amount of sweetness and the fermented rice added a nice sourness that made it different and addicting. The sweet rice balls in wine sauce Aldi had the right amount of sweetness. The rice balls were perfectly tender and also had bits of fermented rice in the sauce. Overall I enjoyed the food but was expecting it to be as good as it was before. I would've gave it 3 stars but the server working that night was very friendly and made up for giving us the wrong dessert.

Yelp
My go to soup dumpling place in Edison. Ugly Dumplings are flashier, but this place is more authentic and delicious. There are a few machines at the front entrance where you can place the order, then find a table and wait for them to call your number. The whole system is super easy and efficient. My personal favorites are the beef scallion pancakes, the spicy salty tofu bowl and the soup dumplings. Avoid the jelly fish, it was just meh. Overall, this is the place to go if you are craving some Shanghainese comfort food, it's an easy no frills place, perfect for a cold winter night.

Yelp
This has been my family's go to restaurant for soup dumplings since before the ownership change. They have a great selection of dumplings and dimsum, but we usually get the same 2 things: crab meat/pork soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns. We LOVE the crab and pork soup dumplings, but in the last half year, it seems like the recipe for the dumpling wrapper has changed. They're a little thicker and gummier than they used to be, but they're still better than everything else in the area. The filling is spot on as always! The pan fried pork buns are my personal favorite (perfectly crisp, juicy, flavorful, what's not to love?). This time we tried the crystal pork slice, which had a strange texture. None of us really enjoyed it, but it's probably an acquired taste.

Yelp
Happy day Adventurers! This place is a small but homey place that offers really tasty dumplings. I ordered take out since I had to get back to work, but highly recommend if you're in the area. It is super small and can get busy when it's dinner time. I ordered the crab meat and pork steam juicy buns, shanghai spicy pork steam juicy dumpling, & pork steam juicy buns. My favorite were the crab meat and pork steam juicy buns. They were super juicy and so flavorful. Perfect fulfilling bites for lunch.

Yelp
Cute place, quick service, food is very affordable, delicious & flavorful. Its an introverts dream you order and pay at a kiosk first, they bring it to your table, you eat and leave. No need to interact with a human

Yelp
This was my first time going to a dumpling shop. I would order from here again. The food was great. We ordered the crab and pork juicy buns, shrimp dumplings and Shanghai spicy pork dry noodles. Everything was hot and flavorful. The service was adequate. Ambiance could use a refresh. I recommend takeout service vs dine in.

Yelp
Honestly probably my favorite place to eat in Edison! Tried some new items this time: pan fried pork buns and glass noodles with fried bean curd in soup. The pan fred pork buns tasted so good! The bottom of the buns were so crunchy and had a layer of toasted sesame, which added a richer nutty flavor to the dough. The meat was very savory and juicy, and I like how they made it particularly flavorful to go well with the dough. The glass noodle soup was good, but nothing special compared to the other stuff you could get. Of course, we got the scallion pancake beef wrap again- very popular for good reason, with good meat and such a crispy flaky wrap. Efficient service here as always, and the vibes are so warm and cozy!

Yelp
Had a tasty girl dinner at Wu's Shanghai Dumpling! Their menu items are very easy to order through their system so you don't have to communicate with anyone at all. It was also nice to see pictures of the food items while ordering. The space was clean and nicely decorated. My friend and I were able to seat ourselves easily. Our food came out quick and was brought to us. Between my friend and I, we ordered so much food. My favorites had to be the soup dumplings and pork buns. We also tried jellyfish for the first time which was surprisingly good. We had some food leftover and since everything was in a to go container already, it was very easy to pack. Overall, there's a lot of options to choose from for everyone!

Yelp
This place is so cute and quaint. You could easily drive past it and not realize. Unlike traditional American spots, you order your food on the machine and then chose where you want to sit. The server then brings out your orders as they're prepared. I ordered the pork and crab dumplings, pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings, veggie udon, and cucumber and scallion. Everything was delicious. I think I would say my favorites were the udon and the crab and pork dumplings. I wanted the dumplings to have a little more flavor but the texture of the outer layer was perfect so I didn't mind.

Yelp
I am having a hard time deciding a rating between 3 and 4. I'm choosing 4 because I am not as knowledgeable when it comes to dumplings and I also think Wu's has 4-5 star potential. My co-workers and I ordered take out from Wu's, which is another reason I give them the benefit of the doubt because takeout is never the same and really my dumplings were quite tasty!! So let's get into it. I ordered the spicy PB dumplings, and the dumplings themselves were perfect, juicy and flavorful! The PB sauce could have absolutely used more spice, to be honest if I didn't know spicy was in the title I would have assumed this was a mild dish. This is a shame because while the PB sauce is delicious, it's also quite thick and there was no element to cut that thick rich sauce which I think adding some more of the spice element could have done. I also ordered scallion pancakes which are a favorite of mine! These were unfortunately completely underwhelming. They were SO oily. I am not one to blot my food- i appreciate some excess oil where appropriate but these were so soaked in oil that I had to blot, and still, it felt like I was eating oil pancakes. I didn't get the scallion flavor. I think the worst part is, they didn't give us sauce for it. We had two orders of scallion pancakes and NONE of the black sauce it usually comes with, again this is a missed opportunity to cut some of the thick/rich/oil taste. So that is my main complaint- no sauces were given to us except one very small (Taco Bell sauce size) soy sauce packet, and we did get a black sauce but it wasn't even 1/4 full and had actually spilt over our order before we even received it. Anyway, we assumed the sauce we did get was for our friend's pork buns which do not come with a sauce of its own. Again, it's a shame because even the little bit of soy sauce I added to my food really helped, so having the appropriate sauces and elements to these dishes would have definitely heightened my experience. We didn't stay long to really be able to judge the appearance but it was nicely decorated, a little bit small inside which I imagine can feel a bit crowded on the weekends but looked comfortable on a Wednesday afternoon. Based on the dumplings alone (not as much with the PB sauce because it was so thick and not spicy) I would come back here, I definitely think there was potential for my meal to be great. I would consider dining in next time though; so I could request the sauces needed to take it to the next level.

Yelp
I haven't been writing reviews as often anymore, but HAD to after coming here yesterday. It is definitely overrated and disappointing. Having tried many XLB spots, I do feel like I can tell when it's good or bad/not authentic. We ordered many things to try: the pork XLB, crab and pork XLB, shrimp hargow dumplings, pan fried pork dumpling, spicy cold beef appetizer and the yellow croaker noodle soup. The XLB are not authentic and disappointing. Yes there was soup but the skin had a slimy soft texture that isn't what you'll find in an authentic XLB spot (or in Shanghai). They were oddly large, and tasted like frozen XLB you can buy at the supermarket. The yellow croaker noodle soup was $15.50 and very fishy. Had to drench it in hot sauce to make it edible. The noodles had a good texture but the broth was bland and this felt overpriced for a fast food, self service spot. The shrimp hargow were awfully dry, the shrimp didn't have the snap that fresh seafood has and the skin, again felt like they were frozen and dry. The highlight of the meal was the pan fried pork dumplings which were juicy, soft, crispy on the bottom with sesame seeds. Overall, it was extremely disappointing and I will not be returning. I am shocked it has 4.1 rating and 1000 reviews!!!

Yelp
We went the day after chinese new year. We ordered beef scallion pancake, crispy noodles, pork bun, beef noodle, truffle soup dumpling, shrimp shumai, pork soup dumpling, snow crab&pork soup dumpling. We ordered tea and it came with such a cute heart shaped swan filled with purple yam; it was oily though. We also got a free peach ice cream that I see all over tiktok; my fam loved it. Theres a discount if you pay cash. You can see them make the dumplings as well. The decor looks great; its a small space but looks very well decorated that it looks spacious. The shrimp shumai was terrible; tasted soo fishy. We enjoyed the rest of the food. If only they had a private room for special events this would be a great place to celebrate. Staff were great as well.

Yelp
Came here on a Wednesday evening for an early dinner and the place was moderately busy, but it was easy enough to find a table. This is more of a fast casual spot where you place an order, pick it up at the counter, and eat after; you're not served otherwise and the food comes out relatively quickly. The menu has a good mix of different dishes and we settled on sharing 5-6 for 4 of us. The food itself tasted pretty good and the portions were fair as well for its price; not out of this world taste or quality wise, but I found it to be a relatively fair meal nonetheless. The noodles were decent, the buns were pretty tasty (although a bit smaller than I would've thought), and the cold appetizers were nice as well. Overall, I wouldn't mind coming back in the future for a quick, tasty meal. I'd recommend the cold appetizer the most, honestly, but their buns weren't bad either.

Yelp
Wu's is basically an Asian quick service restaurant which is more designed for take out. When you walk in you go to an iPad and order then your number is called and food is on trays is brought to your table. At the end you will clean your table and throw items away at a station. There are no sauces on the table and you will need to order at the beginning. Now for the food, very disappointing and lacked flavor. There seem to be a liking to soy beans as they were used in multiple dishes. The soup dumplings were ok but I which I was given a soup spoon as they were near impossible to eat without loosing the good stuff as it fell out. Will not be back.

Yelp
Though a lot has changed in the interior from my many visits over the years, the star of the show, the pork Xiao long bao are still good! My friend and I ordered an order of Shanghai scallion noodles and two orders of the pork Xiao long bao, as it's our favorite at this restaurant. The dumplings are slightly thicker than we were used to with a little less broth than we got from this restaurant previously. The noodles were good, and helped us fill up as the dumplings alone would not be enough. I did notice that they stopped serving chili oil at the table, but they will provide it if you ask for it - definitely do, as it makes for the perfect soup dumpling mouthful with some of the vinegar mixture! As for the changes to the restaurant, they seem to have modernized a bit. Now, you order on a kiosk when you come in, regardless of whether you are eating in or taking out. If you're eating in, you wait for your order to come and then find an open table. Expect a wait at prime meal times, but people tend to move through pretty fast.

Yelp
Been coming here several times a year now, and love the food so much that I drive from Staten Island. The chili peanut wontons are a must. They're made fresh and have a great flavor combination. The spicy pork noodle soup wasn't as spicy as I hoped for but it was still seasoned well. The spicky pork rice cakes were way more spicier, and I love the edemame in the dish. The lion's head soup was ok, I was hoping for some more ginger in it. The portions are massive and prices very good.

Yelp
Visited this cute little dumpling shop in Edison, New Jersey, and was pleasantly surprised! We ordered steamed, juicy pork dumplings, custard cakes, and scallion noodles. Everything was so flavorful like as if we were in a takeout restaurant in Shanghai. The service is all cashless contact minus the one server who calls the numbers and hands you the tray. It's not 5 star dining but good take out!

Yelp
came here with a couple long term associates discus our recent update of our lives. we almost ordered half the menu. this place is no frills. strip mall parking. order at kiosk, post up on table.

Yelp
Ordered through GrubHub and was pleasantly surprised that everything came steaming hot. Pork Juicy buns were OK, the texture of the filling was not the best, but decent. It lacked flavor and so did the broth. The dipping sauce fell short as well. Rates 7/10. The steamed sticky rice siu mai was kinda weird. I've had this before from other restaurants, and this one had some extra non-standard ingredients, but good. Rates 7/10. The beef, scallion, pancake wrap was surprisingly very good. I don't like cilantro, and they loaded it up. But it wasn't overpowering. The beef was not dry. Kind of had a sweet taste to it, which I didn't mind the pancake itself. Very very good light flaky not greasy good texture. If it wasn't for the cilantro, we would have a perfect 10 but I rate it 9/10. And if you like spicy as much as I do, you have got to get the side order of their house made chili oil. They charge $1 for a decent size container, so worth it. Rates 10/10. Overall, I rate it an 8 out of 10 . I've been to other dumpling houses in Brooklyn that are better. Perhaps the indoor dining experience here would have fared better.

Yelp
Update - May 4, 2023 It's been five years since my last visit here. They have hi-tech order systems. I ordered juicy buns aka Xiao long bao, wanton soup and seafood siumai. All taste great. This place have a lot of take out orders. Well decorated restaurant and modern lighting fixtures.

Yelp
Hands down the best soup dumplings I've had! You can tell being it was literally packed on a Friday night. You will order yourself on a kiosk or in advance online. The location itself is very casual and not very spacious. One downside is their open seating which makes snagging a seat difficult. I opted for the steamed pork juicy buns and my husband opted for the spicy pork juicy dumplings. Every single one held a delicious amount of soup. My husband raved about his as well. He enjoyed them so much, I didn't get a photo. I ordered the Shanghai pan fried udon. I felt it could've used more sauce. I also ordered the peach ice cream which was pretty good and also BOGO free. It didn't have a an artificial taste, it actually genuinely tasted like authentic peach ice cream. My husband had the spicy minced pork noodles and preferred the broth of the dish overall. While both noodle dishes were descent, the real standout was definitely the dumplings. We will be back. :)

Yelp
Came here with a friend for lunch. She recommended it as she knows that I love Asian cultural foods. So this is a small location within a strip mall, so parking is no issue. They opened at 11:30am, I walked in at 11:31am & I am glad that I did. By 11:40am they were packed, & by 11:50am people were turning away, just grabbing food to go, or standing around waiting for tables. Again, small interior, but gives you an oddly authentic feel of being somewhere else. Almost like you forget that Edison, NJ is outside of the door. It is self service, so there are (3) ordering tablets & then you seat yourself. They text you a copy of your receipt, which also has your order number on it. Your order comes out & they place it on a small table. They call your number AND it displays on a large screen. You then step to the table to pick up your order (including your drink) & return to your seat. The drink options are super limited. Water, Tiger Tea (which is a boba tea version of Thai Iced Tea), some Foreign brand pre-bottled juice, & Coca-Cola. Once I was done laughing to myself about them calling their buns "juicy," I learned why. When you bite into the dumplings there's the soup like juice inside & it will squirt out everywhere, which I learned the hard way, lol. When you pick up your food they tell you that bowls are available. I initially didn't get one cause I didn't know what to expect. My friend told me to go back & get a bowl. The bowls are very necessary. The food itself, we had: Pork Steam Juicy Buns which were very good & my favorite of them all. Crab & Pork Steam Juicy Buns, also very good, but the just Pork ones were better in my opinion as they were more flavorful. Vegetable Spring Roll. These were surprisingly good without any dipping sauce. Spring Rolls usually have a sweet sauce, these had none. They are also much larger than spring rolls usually are. They are closer to the size of an egg roll from your local corner Chinese store. Egg Yolk Shumai was a unique dish. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it either. Shanghai Fried Udon, a Nice rich Udon with some good flavors. Honestly it didn't get its fair shot, as were were already so full from the dumplings, spring rolls, & Shumai. We could have taken this to-go, but opted not to. Sauces, Yes...I'm mentioning sauces, just because of what we as Americans are used to getting from Asian restaurants. They have a Vinegar sauce that they serve the dumplings with. I was NOT a fan, as I don't want anything that "vinegary," if that makes sense. They DO actually have traditional soy sauce (upon request). They also have a Hot Sauce (upon request), which is not what you think at all. It's a dark colored, almost black, pepper type sauce that I did not find to be hot nor spicy at all. That's it for sauces! Finally, they gave me some kind of fig based dessert. I don't know what it was, I guess it just came with my order. I split it with my friend. We both took one bite & put it down. Looks good, but had a dry texture & was not very sweet at all. It also reminded me of the head of the Demogorgon from 'Stranger Things,' lol. A very important thing to note is there were lots of Asian families there to eat, so that speaks heavily to the authenticity of the food. Overall, I would go again & bring some other friends who could appreciate the experience.

Yelp
I am SO glad that I found this hole in the wall via Yelp. I had the most fabulous experience here. My fellow Yelpers never lead me astray! There's plenty of parking here as it's located in a strip mall. The inside is decorated very nicely and the ambiance is most definitely casual. You place orders yourself on the kiosks and are assigned a number. Once your number is called out, you go to the counter and pick up the food yourself. Please do be warned that this is an extremely small establishment so finding seating can be difficult. We got lucky and were assigned two bar seats by the employee. This is a dim sum place and here are the dishes we enjoyed: Pork Steam Juicy Buns (5/5): The most perfectly made soup dumpling. The inside was hot and delicious whereas the outside was chewy. Spicy Minced Pork Fried Rice Cake (5/5): Lives up to its name of being spicy! Do wish there was a bit more pork but honestly, the flavors of the dish made up any short comings. One of my favorites of the night. Cold Noodle in P&B Sauce (5/5): Make sure to mix the noodles well before eating to get the sauce from the top and bottom evenly balanced. This is a must if you're getting the spicy dishes on the menu. It'll serve as a palate cleanser and help cool off your mouth. Shrimp Dumpling (5/5): A classic made well. The inside was succulent and soft. The outside was perfectly chewy. It was served with soy sauce. Wu's Favorite Spicy Pork Topping Tofu Bowl (5/5): Reminiscent of a hot, filling tofu soup. This is definitely spicy but so worth it! There's plenty of pork, seaweed, edamame, and cucumber. The tofu is so soft that it melts in your mouth. I will be back just to eat this again and again! This is definitely a no frills place, but if you're looking for good food at a great price point, come here. We got all of this for around $50 and took home leftovers for days. Their menu is extensive so I'll be back soon!

Yelp
Really nice fast and self service dim sum like takeout place. You have option to dine in without tipping or taking your food to go. I was most impressed with the packaged silverware they gave out; it had high quality chopsticks, fork, and spoon. They get 5 stars for that alone. Other than that, some dishes are hit or miss. The wontons with peanut butter sauce, the sticky lotus rice, and crystal shrimp dumplings were top tier. Avoid the pork soup dumpling with crab meat, that was prob the worst item. Other than that, happy to revisit for the convenient service and food.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite authentic chinese restaurants; however, this was my first time visiting since the rebrand, and to be honest I'm kind of disappointed. The food just isn't the same as it was before and I'm not a huge fan of the self service style they have now. We ordered the classics like xiao long bao, shang jin bao, beef scallion wrap, pickled veggie and chicken rice cakes, etc, and I can solidly say that these staples are not as good as they were before the rebrand. The shang jin bao had a tougher and dryer dough, the skin of the xiao long bao was thicker and less juicy, the beef scallion wrap seemed to have less beef in it, and the rice cakes were dry and not as chewy as they should be. That being said, I did enjoy the savory tofu soup, the bat bo fan, and the jiu jiang, but I still wish things were the way they were before.

Yelp
I love the soup dumplings from here. Filled with soup, flavorful, and thin wrapper. This is my number 1 recommended place for soup dumplings. I always get their crab soup dumpling. My husband and I tried the curry beef vermicelli soup. He has a sensitive stomach so he got diarrhea for days from it. So I don't recommend this for people with sensitive stomachs. For myself, this curry soup acted like a laxative where I has to go 4 times in a day. We usually get the pan fried udon, but I feel like the amount is less now with this new container or maybe it's my imagination. The inside of the restaurant got remodeled and looks nice. There's also a kiosk for self order so you don't have to wait for a server to come. You sit down after ordering and they call your number on your receipt for you to go to the window to pick up your food. I like how this makes ordering much simpler. The utensils are also nicely packaged.

Yelp
I love Wu Shanghai dumpling! The mango drink is so good!!! I loved their grape one too but one time it came out flavorless lol. I also love their soup dumplings the soup in the crab pork soup dumpling is delicious!!! And reasonable priced. Plaza lot parking available and is free - it's next to Trader Joe's :)

Yelp
I think the management had changed and the place had been renovated. It's not the same restaurant as last time i was here. I'm not going to recommend this place. The food was food but tastes like chain restaurants. Nothing special or nothing stands out. I have no reason to come back. There are many better options in the area. For this reason, I will not recommend.

Yelp
Wu's Shanghai dumpling is a bit of a legend around here. We were happy to see a larger second location open in North Brunswick open with more seating. It's an order ahead system. Everyone comes for the incredible soup dumpling which live up to legend standards. Every time we go. My husband orders a few other dishes but we really go for the dumplings. I used to order their bubble tea but these days I skip it. Not many drink options. Don't be intimidated if there is a line. It goes quickly and worth the wait.

Yelp
Steamed pork dumplings were a hit. Seating was limited so that posed a challenge for our part of six. They use a self ordering system so not much interaction with the staff. Self bussing of tables, which is fine for us but wanted to make Yelpers aware. There is an attendant that wipes down the table upon the party's departure.

Yelp
Let's bump this to a 4.5 for the authenticity, taste, and value for what you get. The only disappointment from my end is the small plastic spoons so you can't really enjoy the soup dumplings even though they are good!

Yelp
Take out: great vegetarian soup and dumplings. Really fast and nice packaging (no leaks)

Yelp
All self serve. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, crab + pork soup dumplings, wonton soup, and cucumber side dish. We preferred the crab meat dumplings but they were all good!

Yelp
During covid, the restaurant was updated and is now much cleaner and new. You order through the kiosk in the front and find a table and the server will call our your order once it's ready. Really like the new format and self service concept. We used to love the soup dumplings here but feels like quality has gone down a bit. The soup dumplings aren't as juicy and have gotten smaller. The sticky rice shumai was pretty good and the spicy wontons are still a favorite. Bit disappointed as this was our go to spot for soup dumplings in the area.

Yelp
Everything was super bland. Dumplings are just ok. Definitely not authentic Shanghai dumplings. Cold noodle was served with only msg and peanut sauce. All the Noodles are way over cooked. And it was super hot felt like no AC on a 90f day.

Yelp
Don't believe the hype!! This place is awful!! For a place that has the word dumpling in its name, this was some of the worst dumplings I have ever had. In fact, the best thing I had there was my Coke. Scallion Pancakes? Unequivocally the worst I have ever had. Drenched in oil with none of the flavor....except for the flavor of oil if you like that. Noodle Soup with Pork and Preserved Vegetables? Tasteless and gummy. Get this dish up the street at Tasty Moments. Soup Dumplings? Literally the worst I have ever had. The dumpling skin was way too thick and gummy. Spring Roll? Pretty awful like eating a lugey. I'm actually disappointed since the reviews were so high but there are so many other better restaurants in the area.

Yelp
Shanghai Dumplings has been my top spot for dumplings, but a change in their recipe has lowered my perception of this restaurant. The pork steam juicy buns used to have a thinner dough and plenty of soup, but now the dough is thicker and there is barely any soup. This is a little disappointing considering how important the soup is in this dish. However, the scallion pancakes and pan fried pork wontons were flavorful and well enjoyed. Additionally, their brown sugar milk tea was sweet, rich, and overall very delicious. The ambiance of Shanghai Dumplings is calm and pleasant. I appreciate the beautiful lighting and how well decorated it is for such a small place. I like the fact that you order on a screen, rather than with a cashier. Despite limited interaction, the employees are nice and the wait for food is reasonable considering all of the fresh and hot items they serve. Overall, I like Shanghai Dumplings, but I miss their old recipe for the pork steam juicy buns. I would be more compelled to come back if they changed the recipe to its original form.

Yelp
Located in a tiny strip mall, this place is a great authentic Chinese restaurant to order from. They are only doing take out and they were very efficient in their orders and are usually ready pretty fast. My favorite items to get are the crab and pork soup dumplings, the gold lava buns which are sweet and perfect for dessert, the cold cucumber as an appetizer and the pan fried noodles as they have good flavor to them. Would definitely order from them again for take out for good Chinese food.

Yelp
The bull sh*t pandemic destroys yet another restaurant, they came back to table service but no-where close to the same food options and experience since. This was one of my favorite soup dumpling places with multiple options with more soup in their dumplings than other places and not all doughy, they used to have the tasty vinegar duck tongues and a few dozen dim sum options along with some extremely unique noodle dishes; we loved the hard noodles that got soft when it sat in the tasty sauce, but unfortunately they removed most options from the menu. Flash forward to 2023 and there's only two soup dumpling options with significantly less soup and much more dough. The duck tongues are gone along with all the unique app options. I don't think there were more than 15 total food options on the entire menu and no more hot tea, seriously no more hot tea, boo. Avoid all 3 noodle dish options, thin grocery store Ramon style noodles throw into a bowl with pork and a dollop of sauce that was far from spicy as advertised and on a plate in the pic not a paper bowl. In fact all u tensile are throw away, seriously? Physically, the place remains the same, a bit of a hole in the wall with a fairly sanitary bathroom, no more table service. By no means bad, just not the same.

Yelp
Our first time eating here, super hopeful after reading all the good reviews, but definitely a letdown. The Pork Steam Juicy Buns were delicious, but that was the only saving grace. The atmosphere was okay, but the music played on a 30-second loop which got extremely irritating. It cost to get water when sitting down, and the service was impersonal. The WORST part was the Pork&Veg Wonton Soup which contained a crab pincer and many raw shrimp. This is not to mention the broth was nearly flavorless and overly salty. The Fried Tofu Vermicelli Soup had so much cilantro (not advertised on the menu) that it overpowered everything else and was inedible. The broth was the same cloudy flavorless liquid. Do not recommend this establishment at all.

Yelp
So I have been coming for years and with their transition to all take-out/delivery due to the pandemic, I have to say Shanghai Dumpling has done a great job pivoting to this while keeping up with the great food quality that is provided. I used to come here often and eat-in and would always enjoy the food here. Unfortunately they have repurposed the eating area to be mostly storage and walking space for the staff. You just go up to the window on the door to pickup food. As for food, this place serves some of the BEST Pork & Vegetable Wontons in Spicy Sauce! The ratio of spiciness and the peanut sauce in it is perfect! Other dishes I enjoy are their Pork soup dumplings, Beef Scallion Pancake Wrap, Gold Lava Buns, Spicy Beef Tendon, Spicy Cold Beef, their Noodle Soups, Pan Fried Noodles, and Gold Lava Buns. You can also buy the soup dumplings frozen to steam yourself! What I really like here with their take-out strategy is that they provide the food in higher quality containers. Everything is easily stackable and the soups are even put together in a way that the broth is separate from the noodles, and when you combine everything, you can still use the same bowl! Many places just use the cheaper containers to separate the broth and noodles/meat and you need to use your own bowl when combining them, so this is a nice touch. Finally, they provide good quality chopsticks as I feel you could wash and reuse them if you want!
