15 Places to Celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage

"Sandwiched between a laundromat and a pharmacy, in the blessed shadow of the church across the street, Luna de Xelajú offers the holy trinity of restaurante Guatamalteco (Guatemalan restaurant), panaderia (bakery), and pizzeria. The pizza ovens behind the front counter do double duty, baking pizzas as well as Guatemalan sweet breads and biscuits such as the sesame-sprinkled cookie champurrada. The walls are painted the blue of the Guatemalan flag (or, perhaps meant to resemble the indelible azul maya) and tables line a narrow corridor, draped in stunning traditional woven cloth. While New York might have several restaurants offering Central American food, Xelajú stands out for its dedicated, delicious focus on the cuisine of Guatemala. The name Luna de Xelajú refers to a widely beloved Guatemalan love song, but also to Xelajú, the K’iche’ Maya name for Quetzaltenango, the second-largest city in Guatemala. The restaurant was established in 2003, when the current owners took over a former pizzeria and used their Guatemalan culinary expertise to vastly expand the menu. The Guatemalan menu offers many traditional dishes, such as salpicon, a shredded beef salad with chopped onions, radishes, and a heap of cilantro, with a bracing citrus tang of freshly squeezed lime juice. There’s pepian, a spicy chicken stew served with Guatemalan tortillas, which are smaller and thicker. The tamales are hefty steamed cakes of masa, stuffed with meat, vegetables, or cheese, and wrapped in banana leaves. Threads of beef melt in the mouth from hilachas (a Spanish word meaning “shreds”), a beef stew simmered on the stove for hours, with tomatoes, tomatillos, and other vegetables. Breakfast is a feast of champions, with eggs, refried beans, tortillas, plantains, chorizo, and queso fresco. The bakery makes fresh panes dulces such as campechanas and traditional desserts such as the cream-filled puff pastry milhoja. If, for some inexplicable reason, you like the naughty thrill of ordering pizza at a restaurant known for its bountiful Guatemalan offerings, they’ve got you covered there as well. This family-run operation that fills a lapse in a city with every food in the world, leaves one saying delicioso." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

25 Dishes for Offal Lovers Around NYC | Eater NY

"Nothing in Central America quite illustrates the concept of nose-to-tail eating as well as Guatemalan revolcado. It starts out with a pig head from which pieces like cheek and ear are carefully removed and used, followed by “pig entrails” that usually include kidney, liver, and intestines. The taste of the organs is strong, but sent in a mellow direction by curry powder." - Robert Sietsema

10 Affordable Places for Difficult-to-Find Cuisines in NYC | Eater NY

"Yes, there are a few bodegas in Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst that push aside their shelves, install a table, and sell soups. But one must go to Jamaica, Queens, to find a full-service Guatemalan restaurant. Xelaju, the ancient name of the country’s second largest city of Quetzaltenango, advertises itself as both an Italian pizzeria and a Guatemalan restaurant. It peddles breakfasts featuring blacks beans, thick small tortillas, and bouncy white cheese, as well as tamales incorporating the green leaf called in English “longbeak rattlebox.” Best of all is salpicon, a cold beef-and-radish salad." - Robert Sietsema

I had a fantastic dining experience at La Luna de Xelajú on Parsons Boulevard! The food was absolutely delicious—every dish we tried was bursting with authentic flavors and made with care. From the appetizers to the main course, everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection. What made the experience even more special was the warm and attentive service from Zulma, the owner. She personally took care of our table, making sure we had everything we needed and offering great recommendations. Her hospitality made us feel right at home, adding a personal touch that’s rare to find. If you’re looking for amazing food and top-notch service, this is definitely the place to go. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to come back!

Okay I’m a bit disappointed. I really wanted to like this place. I got tamale de elote it was dry and not that flavorful but it could be from corn that wasn’t that sweet to begin with. I got a tamale that was actually really good in flavor but the texture was gelatinous and needed less liquids or more time steaming. Now this place also selling pizza may make a lot of sense when it comes to the sauce on the chuchitos. It taste like canned tomatoe sauce which is fine but it needs something else and they put meat with bones inside which is disappointing to me because I got a chard of bone in my mouth. The pupusas have an off texture but that isn’t the issue it is the filling it is not a melt cheese it is a kind of crumbly one that doesn’t seem to go with the taste or concept of the pupusa I’ve had pupusas many times I have even made them myself and they have never tasted like this and not in a good way. Lastly the Jamaica, not the worst just watery but drinkable. I know many people say this place is authentic but I’m not sure that it is it just taste like a few short cuts. Again I really wanted to like this place as I wanted to be able to support a Guatemalan restaurant there are not many out there. But it was a bit disappointing.

Google
Authentic Guatemalan food , good atmosphere , good price and great service . Parking is in the rear of the restaurant , and you can practice your Spanish while you are at it . Not fancy exterior but the food makes up for it . I have been coming here for years and enjoy all meals each time.

Google
First of all, I'm a Chinese so I might not too good on judging Spanish food. My boyfriend is from Guatemala and he said the food is authentic. So summary our review, this store worth 4 stars.

Google
Horrible! Horrible I ordered on uber eats , Carne asada rice salad and beans and I didn’t have the beans and rice, the rice tastes super bad as if it were expired , it is not edible.... I spent almost $30

Google
It was a NO for me. The taste, presentation and prices were terrible. Not even my dog wanted to eat the food. The chicharron was soggy because they poured sauce on it to mask the stale taste. The pupusas had virtually nothing inside but the description claimed that it would have chicharrón, cheese and beans. The rellenitos had no beans inside and the dough had more flour than plantain and looked more white than ripe yellow. Overall, as a Guatemalan, the food was a extremely disappointing.

Yelp
Over the years I have been to this particular restaurant, mainly their pizza shop section, they make some really good zeppoles and there pizza is decent not to much sauce or alot of cheese on it,it's just right, they also sell alot of different Spanish foods because it is a latin restaurant slash pizza shop. I have known the guy that makes the pizza for a couple of decades and we became really good friends over the years .I would always stop by to get a slice of pizza or s chicken roll .which I enjoyed, the staff has always been really nice to me in this establishment. The prices aren't bad at all ,and ambiance was always clean. They have seats inside if you want to sit down and dine. Like I said we were more like friends over there. When ever I would come into order some food or just passing by .I would make it my business to stop in to say what's up. This spot is a real queens ny pizza shop .where the people that work there build relationships with the customers and the neighborhood. And they have one another backs.no matter what nationality you are. There aren't that many pizza shop like that around any more. That what makes new York, new York.and queens what it is a melting pot of different cultures .operating together.

Yelp
Let me tell y'all! I love me some Mexican food & I love to support small/local restaurants. I really wanted some ceviche & best place to get some is Queens. I was disappointed at the way it looked when I first took it out the bag & it just looked like salsa. But I stirred it up & there was some bits of shrimp. I do expect more shrimp to tomato ratio but this was seasoned well. I sliced half an avocado & used Scoops chips to finish it off. It was amazing & worth the wait.

Yelp
Read about this place and it's traditional Guatemalan food. Stopped by and ordered Breakfast and Lunch to go. We also tried their freshly baked breads. DELICIOUS! Food and pastries were delicious | very affordable | decent portions | small family ran business | recommended for take out.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for years , since a young lad lol place is great , don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yelp
I will start with the positives, I like their steak with rice and beans since it is well priced and they give you a lot of rice and beans. I also like their baked sweets like their pound cake and puff pastry ears. But the girl in the back didn't have a mask on her nose or mouth and she was rubbing her nose behind the counter. Luckily she didn't touch my food she only took my order. I would go back after the pandemic because I don't want to get sick.

Yelp
I am very disappointed and very mad about placing an order here. I placed an order through Ubereats and this is what I got (please see photos attached). THIS IS SO DISGUSTING. I WILL NEVER EVER RECOMMEND THIS. They don't even want to refund me for the whole thing. THIS PLACE IS VERY DIRTY. MIND YOU, they charged me $40 for this GARBAGE.

Yelp
I ordered the beef soup. Was very delicious. It came with a side of rice, a freshly made tortilla ( I call them memela) some lime and a green hot sauce. I also ordered the horchata which was very good and it came with ice, Which made it better. My delivery was on time. Especially because I ordered after 10 which was great to find a restaurant still open at this time. I will definitely be ordering from here again. Again great food and great service.

Yelp
Oh my god what did I just eat?!? It's like a rainbow made from comfort food on my plate. I ordered the Plato tipico with the steak and Pork and I was blown away. Everything on my plate was full of flavor and homemade as if I had a grandmother from South America that I never met and she sent me food to make me feel good! This was my first order so I hope they are consistent. If so they will have a loyal customer.

Yelp
Although this place can be hit or miss, I love this place. I go here all the time, for a typical Central American breakfast, pupusas or soup to recover from a cold. It's family owned and run, and it has a very familiar feel.

Yelp
This place is really popular with the local community, I guess because they've been in business a long time. I've mostly only ever eaten from their Italian menu not their Spanish menu. They make just about everything from burgers, breakfast, etc. Their pizza and pasta dishes in my opinion are inedible. They use your basic ingredients and it just lacks flavor. I've also had a beef patty with cheese which happened to be really greasy. This restaurant also happens to have late hours to the early morning which can be convenient, but I personally would eat elsewhere.

Laura Z.

Yelp
This place is horrible on many occasions I place an order and they call me speaking Spanish and when I ask for English they hang up . gave the another shot and it happened again . only when I call grub hub they explained the person making pizza wasn't there . but the can sell me slices . Who does That !!! Not organized or professional waste of time

Nina H.

Yelp
I ordered from here on ubereats and it was the worst place I have ever ordered from. I ordered the dinner plate with eggs, rice, beans, sour cream, sweet plantains, and pork sausage and horchata drink. I was expecting a sort of chipotle meal but it was FAR from that. The meal was mostly eggs and had little rice, the beans were a paste and repulsive, the meat was questionable looking, had one plantain, no sour cream, and the cheese was just a block of cheese. The only edible things in my meal were the rice and ONE plantain. While drinking the drink I thought it was great but when i was done I saw that the bottom was GREY, like a cement color. Never ordering here again.
