Taste The Past: Bars Where You Can Relive The Good Ol’ Days

"Xiao Ya Tou is a quirky modern Asian restaurant bar with red lanterns, retro signboard, and poster-covered walls. The menu features bold modern Asian flavors with dishes like Hokkien mee with smoked pancetta and inventive cocktails such as the creamy Milo Dinosaur and rum-based Yuan Yang." - Rachel Tan

Great place for veggies since there was a whole vegetarian menu. We had the tofu satay very crispy and yummy, Brussel sprouts were a standout dish , crispy omelette which was really good especially the curry sauce. The dumplings were quite meaty for my taste but that's a personal choice , I'm sure most people enjoy the meaty flavour of impossible meat and I should have expected that! Service was quick and friendly.

Xiao Ya Tou has a playful energy and nostalgic touches that made the space feel alive. We tried the Lobster Kueh Pie Tee, Truffle Roast Duck, Crab Fried Rice, and Beef Horfun. Everything was okay - the duck was rich, the fried rice comforting, and the horfun had great wok hei. The kueh pie tee was fun, the beef missed a mark. Overall, the food was nice but not quite memorable. Like a “nice” person you’d happily chat with at a party but wouldn’t text the next day. Would return for the atmosphere and a good night out, but probably not chasing any cravings.

I would love to give this restaurant a full five stars across the board if their music is not blasting our ears, definitely not a place for chitchatting. All the food is amazing and sophisticatedly prepared, the lobster kueh pie tee is something you cannot miss! The broccoli used is very unique too! Be prepared for pay extra for some fusion local food, it can easily be $70-$80 per pax

Hybrid vintage fusion vibes? Is how I can best describe it. We came on the weekend for lunch with a group with 2 toddlers. For the price I can't help but feel like there could have been something "more" . The seating is mixed with some seats really uncomfortable and constantly hitting my ankle against the metal bar. The place is busy and a little under staffed so a wait was expected.

Food is unique and tasty: lobster kueh pie tie was packed with filling in a crispy shell, hokkien noodles was cooked in delicious and thick broth served with juicy scallops, octopus slices, big prawns and some clams, brussels sprouts were fried with char siew, crispy tofu was served piping hot with mushrooms. Though portions looked small, they were filling. The place was interestingly decorated with chinese dragons n lions and nostalgic items.

Great atmosphere, fantastic design. We loved the truffle duck, mushroom dumplings, and ceviche. Good service, too. Highly recommend.

We went on a Monday evening, and to say we were disappointed would be an understatement. Based on recommendations from locals, we ventured out for dinner with friends. Sure, the music was good, the decor eclectic, the service passable but there were so many points were it failed. The quality of ingredients, portion sizes, lack of a really flavour, and the incredibly high price point made this a venue we would not return to.

Yelp
This is a pretty pricey modern Asian place. The decor is very nice but the aircon is anaemic (partly because of the semi open concept). The Hokkien mee was good. There was a lot of seafood & the stock was very rich & there was quite a bit of crispy lard. The smoky wok flavour could be better. There was a lot of egg too. Lobster kueh pie tee was good. The only kueh pie tee bit was the shell. There was a lot of seafood stuffing including 2 types of fish roe. Truffle roast duck was decent. There was a strong truffle taste. The skin had a slight crispness & the meat was slightly mushy. Kueh salat ice cream was good but tiny. The tapioca pearls had a great rose flavour & the ice cream had an intense kueh salat flavour while the components were still distinct. The popped rice & mochi added to the symphony of textures. Coconut ice cream wafer was bigger than expected. The ice cream was pretty good but similar to Thai Coconut ice cream & the wafer was slightly stale.

Yelp
A small touristy spot that resembles a hole in the wall but food is actually good if you manage to get a table. We tried to get reservations for 3 and ended up sitting outside by the curb where all the cars drive by so that was a downer and ruined the dining experience. We ordered the charred wawa cabbage, black pepper tofu, crab meat fried rice and the wagyu hor fun. We enjoyed the food quite a bit and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Service was fine and the staff was friendly. It's a bit on the pricey side though and portions are not big.

Yelp
life sometimes throw you a curveball when you least expect. i would never consider or walk in to xiao ya tou, duxton for a meal for its 'bar vibe' and think probably another rip off chinese food suited for expats. . but boy was i wrong. the food is actually really delicious and a creative, modern take on some chinese classics. the truffle dong kuai duck, lobster kueh pie tee, wagyu satay, brussel sprouts, mushroom dumplings - all spot on. the wagyu satay was so tender (sous vide for hours before bbq) and full of flavor. the weakest from the menu was the dessert. i dont understand the kueh salat ice-cream with beehive biscuits and sago. . . the staff is friendly and enthusiastic and the 90's hip hop / pop playlist puts you in the mood for a good time. i didnt mention about the price. let's put it as duxton hill pricing. ill come back again whenever i feel rich.

Yelp
So good to be back! Four years on the the food here is still a winner. The KYT Hokkien Mee was standout. The softest noodles in broth, topped with so many favourite friends from the ocean. A great late lunch in Dutton Hill, Singapore

Yelp
The food was delicious in a fun atmosphere! Best pork dumplings I've ever had and delicious Chilli Crab Puri. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I tried almost every dish on the menu and everything was amazing! I love how the flavors are a new take on traditional dishes. Everything was great. Brussel sprouts: super crispy on the outside with a moist center! Just perfect. Had a bit of sweetness but cooked with bacon so extra delicious Crab potato roasti: the crab meat was well seasoned and fresh, the potatoes were crispy and the whole dish just worked! Roast duck: fantastic dish. Large bites of moist duck with crispy skin Pork belly: another amazing dish. Perfectly prepared and so tender! Everything was amazing!

Yelp
Everything we had here was delicious! They were fully booked out for dinner reservations when we went, but the host was kind enough to squeeze us in for a quick 60min seating before their first dinner guests arrived for the night. We tried the brussel sprouts, lobster kueh pie tee, crab omelette and wagyu truffle beef hor fun - all of them were truly knockouts! Drinks were a bit pricey but came in cute vintage cups and bottles. Overall, a fun dinner destination with a quirky interior, great ambience and yummy food. We'll be back again for sure!

Yelp
We had a company set lunch comprising of sharing platter of crispy otah otah, Hainanese chicken cutlets and then mains of salad with salmon sashimi with white sesame dressing and crispy fish skin and avocado mash and then Ayam pengat with fried egg and achar. Dessert was coconut tau huay with Gula Melaka sago, honey ice cream and cookie crumble. Too much food for one pax to be honest. They could have advised our Organiser. Food was ok. Not bad but Not any extraordinary. Won't be back on my own accord when there's too many New places to check out.
