Where to try mod-Sin cuisine in Singapore - SilverKris

"A colourful, kitschy spot on the Duxton Hill stretch that serves playful, elevated takes on Singaporean comfort food—expect items like lobster kueh pie tee, wok-fried wagyu hor fun and truffle duck fried rice. It’s a lively choice for drinks and light bites, with standouts including Angus beef satay and the house specialty crispy otak-otak rolls. Vegetarians are well catered for with a dedicated meat-free menu featuring dishes such as veggie ngoh hiang, beancurd chips with mala mayo and mushroom dumplings stuffed with Impossible pork, turnip, mushrooms and cabbage." - Dinesh Ajith

Absolutely loved the experience at Xiao Ya Tou! The atmosphere is vibrant and stylish with a fun retro vibe, perfect for a night out with friends. Every dish was bursting with flavour — creative takes on Asian favourites that really impressed. The cocktails were top-notch too! Staff were friendly, attentive, and made great recommendations. Definitely one of my go-to spots for good food and good vibes. Highly recommend!

Amazingly tasty but ambience was a little too dark and noisy for my liking for a weekday lunch. Love: Kueh Pie Tee, Brussel Sprouts (i don't normally like brussel sprouts), Pork Rib Rendang Not bad: Chilli Crab Omelette, Crab Fried Rice, Crispy Marmite Chicken Not sure: Hokkien Mee (better ones at hawker ctrs), Mango Sticky Rice (too pricey for the portion)

In short, this is local cuisine done right (definitely a step above hawker centres). All the food orders came out delicious, and I loved the cocktail choices—super fun names and recipes 🍸🍹. The tall, slim staff member who served us was attentive (oops, I forgot to get his name—I was too captivated by finding such a unique local restaurant 😁). The food came out just right—the temperature, presentation, and the food was fresh. You can tell the chef(s) know how to moderate the fire so that the flavor and fragrance come out naturally 🙌🏼. I just wished the portions were a little larger 🙃. The decor is eclectic and nostalgic. I felt transported to the 70s–80s. What drew me here first was the name, then the menu, and finally the rumble jumble of the collection from old Singapore ✌🏻. I was only a little disappointed with the 12 shots choices. I only enjoyed 1 of the 4 from the bartender’s selection. Even though I mentioned I was fussy—basically saying “Surprise me!”—we were able to guess three of the four shots, which didn’t surprise me at all. Boring… 😜 The presentation was fun though. This restaurant is on the pricey side if you want to enjoy the food and feel full 😄. Make sure you make a reservation if you’re going on a Friday night. Thankfully, we were able to get a table without booking in advance.

Fun staff and tasty food. Right up front, this place is fun. If you’re looking for a quiet night out this isn’t for you, picture tasty Asian fusion with Ace of Bass and ABBA as the soundtrack. I saw a review and thought this place was with a try, after eating here I’d happily recommend anyone to check Ciao Ya Tou out. We wanted to keep things light so stick with seafood, the flavors were great although I’d personally prefer a little more heat. Can’t fault the quality though, the seafood was top notch. We loved the atmosphere, great music and all the staff were super friendly and fun. Three plates and (to be honest, quite about of) drinks were just over S$200. Would come back again, thanks for having us 😘

Such a quirky and unique Chinese restaurant! Loved the fun vibe and great music — it really adds to the experience. There were so many amazing food options, and everything we tried was delicious. Perfect spot for a night out with friends or a casual date. Definitely coming back!

Google
The food is normal with local flavour but their price is astronomical including the serving portion so do take your time to order. Service is good and friendly. Atmosphere is nostalgic with nice decor without aircon but good breezy fan. The toilet need mention because it was so dark even darker than those in disco. There is a nearby carpark if you drive.

I had a fantastic experience at Xiao Ya Tou. The food was absolutely delicious, every dish was full of flavor and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was vibrant yet comfortable, making it a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. On top of that, the service was excellent; the staff were attentive, friendly, and made us feel very welcome. Overall, it’s a wonderful spot with great food, great ambience, and great service. Definitely worth visiting and I’ll be back again!

Xiao Ya Tou is a gem! A modern Asian restaurant with an exciting menu that delivers both flavor and creativity. The dishes are delicious and beautifully done, and the cocktails are some of the best I’ve had — perfectly crafted and a real highlight of the experience. The ambience is stylish yet welcoming, making it a great place to unwind with friends or enjoy a special night out. Service is warm, attentive, and professional. Highly recommend if you’re looking for amazing food, excellent cocktails, and a memorable dining experience

Yelp
This is a pretty pricey modern Asian place. The decor is very nice but the aircon is anaemic (partly because of the semi open concept). The Hokkien mee was good. There was a lot of seafood & the stock was very rich & there was quite a bit of crispy lard. The smoky wok flavour could be better. There was a lot of egg too. Lobster kueh pie tee was good. The only kueh pie tee bit was the shell. There was a lot of seafood stuffing including 2 types of fish roe. Truffle roast duck was decent. There was a strong truffle taste. The skin had a slight crispness & the meat was slightly mushy. Kueh salat ice cream was good but tiny. The tapioca pearls had a great rose flavour & the ice cream had an intense kueh salat flavour while the components were still distinct. The popped rice & mochi added to the symphony of textures. Coconut ice cream wafer was bigger than expected. The ice cream was pretty good but similar to Thai Coconut ice cream & the wafer was slightly stale.

Yelp
A small touristy spot that resembles a hole in the wall but food is actually good if you manage to get a table. We tried to get reservations for 3 and ended up sitting outside by the curb where all the cars drive by so that was a downer and ruined the dining experience. We ordered the charred wawa cabbage, black pepper tofu, crab meat fried rice and the wagyu hor fun. We enjoyed the food quite a bit and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Service was fine and the staff was friendly. It's a bit on the pricey side though and portions are not big.

Yelp
life sometimes throw you a curveball when you least expect. i would never consider or walk in to xiao ya tou, duxton for a meal for its 'bar vibe' and think probably another rip off chinese food suited for expats. . but boy was i wrong. the food is actually really delicious and a creative, modern take on some chinese classics. the truffle dong kuai duck, lobster kueh pie tee, wagyu satay, brussel sprouts, mushroom dumplings - all spot on. the wagyu satay was so tender (sous vide for hours before bbq) and full of flavor. the weakest from the menu was the dessert. i dont understand the kueh salat ice-cream with beehive biscuits and sago. . . the staff is friendly and enthusiastic and the 90's hip hop / pop playlist puts you in the mood for a good time. i didnt mention about the price. let's put it as duxton hill pricing. ill come back again whenever i feel rich.

Yelp
So good to be back! Four years on the the food here is still a winner. The KYT Hokkien Mee was standout. The softest noodles in broth, topped with so many favourite friends from the ocean. A great late lunch in Dutton Hill, Singapore

Yelp
The food was delicious in a fun atmosphere! Best pork dumplings I've ever had and delicious Chilli Crab Puri. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I tried almost every dish on the menu and everything was amazing! I love how the flavors are a new take on traditional dishes. Everything was great. Brussel sprouts: super crispy on the outside with a moist center! Just perfect. Had a bit of sweetness but cooked with bacon so extra delicious Crab potato roasti: the crab meat was well seasoned and fresh, the potatoes were crispy and the whole dish just worked! Roast duck: fantastic dish. Large bites of moist duck with crispy skin Pork belly: another amazing dish. Perfectly prepared and so tender! Everything was amazing!

Yelp

Yelp
Everything we had here was delicious! They were fully booked out for dinner reservations when we went, but the host was kind enough to squeeze us in for a quick 60min seating before their first dinner guests arrived for the night. We tried the brussel sprouts, lobster kueh pie tee, crab omelette and wagyu truffle beef hor fun - all of them were truly knockouts! Drinks were a bit pricey but came in cute vintage cups and bottles. Overall, a fun dinner destination with a quirky interior, great ambience and yummy food. We'll be back again for sure!

Yelp
We had a company set lunch comprising of sharing platter of crispy otah otah, Hainanese chicken cutlets and then mains of salad with salmon sashimi with white sesame dressing and crispy fish skin and avocado mash and then Ayam pengat with fried egg and achar. Dessert was coconut tau huay with Gula Melaka sago, honey ice cream and cookie crumble. Too much food for one pax to be honest. They could have advised our Organiser. Food was ok. Not bad but Not any extraordinary. Won't be back on my own accord when there's too many New places to check out.
