The Best Mexican Food in Denver | Eater Denver

"Run by a couple from Chihuahua, this Golden getaway offers a mostly straightforward, albeit satisfying, menu of burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and the like — but it also takes some nifty detours into less familiar territory: Take the cazuela, a breakfast stew of sausage and potatoes with poached eggs and chipotle salsa; the shrimp “ramen” with barbacoa consomé; or the sarape, a skillet dish of steak, ham, poblanos, cheese, and more accompanied by tortillas for DIY tacos. The margaritas come infused with tamarind and cucumber or mango and habanero chiles. Try the bevy of house-bottled salsas and the signature flan de elote for dessert." - Ruth Tobias

25 Essential Tacos in and Around Denver

"This Golden find doesn’t merely assemble tacos, it composes them with epicurean flair (and sides of the myriad house salsas of which it’s rightly proud): Think chicken and mushrooms in creamy chipotle sauce or pork and nopales in mole, washed down with kiwi- or tamarind-infused margaritas." - Eater Staff, Ruth Tobias

Google
What a cool place to eat in Golden! They strive to be unique and different from other Mexican restaurants. The food was so flavorful, fresh, and carefully crafted. The margarita was also refreshing and delicious! We’ll definitely be marking this as a favorite place to come back to.

Google
Incredible, authentic tacos with delicioussss (and very big) margaritas, and maybe best of all, very nice people who will explain the menu in such a helpful way. It was probably the best restaurant we went to while visiting the Denver area. Very casual - we were able to visit after hiking. The potato and queso taco was a surprise hit, and the chicharron taco and the steak taco were both amazing. The margaritas are also very much worth the money. ;) We plan to come back next time we’re in the area!

Adam Zaitz

Google
Rather than chips and salsa, they do a chicharron with a little bottle of hot sauce - delicious. Had the pastor tacos and they were some of the best I’ve had in recent memory! Great kind service as well

Google
Traveling in Colorado and wanted some good, authentic Mexican food and found this little gem. I had the pastor burrito smothered and my wife had the tacos rajas. Both very favorable and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. The burrito had some of the pineapple in it that gave it a great flavor. The house made sauces were excellent. Make room for the flan! It’s not like most flan and was a great way to finish our lunch. Wish we lived here as it would be a regular place to eat. The owners are great and friendly as well.

Google
Fabulous authentic place, try it if you’re in town. We all got burritos - bean, barbecoa, al pastor, allllll delicious!!

Google
An AUTHENTIC spot 💜✨️ My heart, and stomach, is so full!! I randomly stopped byand enjoyed their Papas con queso taco special, horrchata and loved it all so luch, I ordered a Rajas con crema chipolte burrito to take home for dinner! I'm not local, but I will definitely make the drive to enjoy this spot. The care and attention to detail really comes through in the flavor. I wish them all the success and delciousness!

Get off the beaten path in Golden and be rewarded with arguably the most authentic, creative and tasty(!) Mexican cuisine and cocktails (Quien Te Quiere?) at the most reasonable price along the front range. The Birria Ramen is a challenger to Narita Intl airport ramen (those fortunate enough to have savored that b4 a flight)...granted, not Japanese, but fully complex, with deep flavors.

Google
Authentic Mexican food and the best we've had in a long time in the Denver area. Must try: tacos al pastor and pork belly and the carnitas burrito. So glad we stopped in. We will be back!

Yelp
AMAZING. OMG. Seriously. Are you a Mexican food lover? Do you like lovely slow cooked meats (carnitas, barbacoa)? This place is OFF THE CHARTS excellent!! We are in Denver for business - and a friend recommend this spot. On our first visit (YES, we are here for only a couple days, but have been twice, so far...and plan one more visit before we leave)...we ordered the Al Pastor Tacos and the smothered Carnitas burrito. I am a HUGE carnitas fan...and this burrito was sublime. It's about the size of two traditional sized enchiladas (not too big)...had an amazing tomatillo sauce...with a wonderful pickled cabbagey thing on top. Seriously, every bit was moist and delicious. Baby had the Al Pastor tacos - which he pronounced "the best I've ever had." So, a couple days later we took my brother (local to Denver). This time, we took the waiter's recommendation (he is also the owner)...and I had the Barbacoa Quesadilla (which comes with Barbacoa "juice" and a nice little hot salsa) - SO great!; Baby had the "pork belly tacos" which, in his description, "Sublime! From a reluctant Mexican food person...those tacos were blessed." (He is Canadian and also not religious...so, this is unheard of...) We are in town for a couple more days...and plan to go back before we leave. We also purchased some of their salsas! Yum...all different, but lovely. No preservatives...just beautiful fresh ingredients. This place is a MUST GO! (Also, good and easy parking for our big truck) Nice outdoor seating with umbrellas! Super service. Our server clearly wants you to enjoy your experience. If I could give this restaurant a 10 star, I would.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday was the night we visited. So many great varieties of tacos- chicken with mole. Quesadilla with cheese and potatoes. Steak. Mushroom- Cauliflower.' Apparently they change the menu weekly. Can't wait to return -- but I sure won't order the rice again. That was the only disappointment. Service was as quick and attentive. Nice outside patio for a lovely evening
google avatar

Yelp
Definitely a solid taco spot, the proprietor goes out of his way to explain the menu as well as the dishes as they are made to order. Furthermore, the prices reasonable. I tried the shrimp tacos as well as the corn flan. The corn flan was the most memorable part of the meal. Everything was decent but I wish they were a little more generous with the portion size and the amount of salsa they give. The tacos felt a little dry. Ambiance is decent, cozy and green. Space is clean and somewhat inviting.

Yelp
So delicious! Everything is made fresh to order, even the tortillas. The red hot sauce was so good I think we're going to have some shipped back home. I had the rajas con queso (vegetarian) tacos and hubs had chicken tacos. We also had a side of rice and beans. $33 for everything, not bad! The owner was very attentive, kind and took time to talk with me about gluten free items (nearly everything!) and he was accommodating too. So very kind. I will definitely be back next time we're here!

Yelp
Wonderful!! Best quesadillas I've had in a long while! Will definitely return! Great service as well!!

Yelp
Went here for a quick bite after 2.5 hours of hiking; food was amazing after that hike! Everything tasted great and was seasoned just right. Not too spicy and not bland. I had a kiwi margarita, it was strooonnggg and so delicious. I had no idea I needed a kiwi margarita in my life. The serve staff was friendly and welcoming, very respectful as well. The inside was a little small, and they also had outdoor seating. We only spent 30-40 minutes there; being seated, eating, paying our tab. Definitely ideal for quick bites and good drinks.

Yelp
Was looking for a good Mexican restaurant in the Golden area that we were going to be passing through last week and started pulling up all these great reviews for a taco place on the north side of town called Xicamiti la Taqueria Bistro, right at the corner of where Washington St. hits 58th. Turns out I'm just way behind the times. The place has been rockin' it for over 4 years and I'd never heard about it. Went in and glad we did. "Xicamiti" I learned, is the name of Mexico's national flower, the dahlia. Walter Meza, the owner (along with his kind wife and children) run the place and it is really excellent. Nothing fancy, but like a nice not-hole-in-the-wall street taco place, serving great food and equipped with a bar and probably 30+ seats or so inside along with a nice patio outside that gives a great view to Lookout Mtn. and Clear Creek Canyon. Had one of the most delicious quesadillas I've ever had (even though Walter said his personal favorite is the tacos campechanos). Give it a try and if you're interested here's the back-story (for you restaurant history buffs:). https://www.5280.com/the-tale-behind-the-triumph-of-goldens-xicamiti-la-taqueria-y-bistro/ Adios mi amigos, David "Nino di Xicamiti" M

Yelp
Truly a great place with amazing food and excellent service. Had the Barb quesadillas and steak tacos. Gut worthy!!!! Amazing food
google avatar

Stefanie C.

Yelp
4.5 stars. I've been wanting to try Xicamiti for awhile because of its high rating on Yelp. It's located right on the edge of Downtown Golden. Street parking isn't too bad for that reasons. My partner and I walked in and got seated immediately. It was fairly busy, but service was quick. I ordered the Chicharron and Camaron tacos, both of which come in threes. Everything tasted fresh and authentic. The salsa was also SO spicy. Each taco was packed with ingredients, and I definitely want to come back to try more of their menu items, from appetizers to burritos!

Deb G.

Yelp
Wasn't too crazy about the tacos. They were small and not memorable. I was expecting tacos like those in Southern California from a mom and pop Mexican place. I think these tacos are the type from a specific region and guess they just don't work for me.
google avatar

Ryan Z.

Yelp
Holy smokes, the best Mexican food I've had in recent memory! Quick, amazing service, and unbelievably delicious. It's an unassuming restaurant next to a liquor store, but don't be deceived. They gave a warm welcome, and the owner came by several times to make us feel welcome, and explain dishes etc. We ordered compechano and Camaron tacos as well as quesadillas for the kids. The tacos had a generous portion of meat and fixins. The compechanos had some spice and were my favorite, while the Camaron tacos had a fresh flavor with more vegetables. Even the quesadillas were good. I will certainly return!
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Amazing spot with true authentic Mexican food! The owner suggested the Barbacoa Quesadilla and wow, it was amazing

Samantha M.

Yelp
Hands. Down. Best. Mexican. Food. Ever. Run, don't walk!!!! Margs, tacos, quesadillas, and queso fondido are all amazing!!
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
I'm so glad we stopped here after our hike. It's a little non-assuming place next to a liquor store but the food is so delish! I had the Huevos Montados and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. It's 2 Grilled Ham & onion quesadillas topped with poached eggs & their signature Pork Chile Verde - just perfect! He had the Tacos Albanil skillet, which he professed was too much food and then totally cleaned his plate. Yum!
google avatar

Lori W.

Yelp
Bueno! Bueno! Bueno! The drink menu is unique and amazing. The tacos? Mwah! Quesadilla Suiza dipped in consume! Count me in. Be sure to have the Elote Flan! Service was great. It is very cute inside and totally different than you would expect from its outside appearance. Highly recommend!

Yelp
If this was to be my last meal, I'd die happy. This place is small, unassuming, with simple and clean dining room. We stopped in on a Friday late afternoon before heading out of town. I'm so glad we did. We flew out of Denver back to Detroit the next morning and I couldn't bring myself to eat anything else until back in Detroit, as nothing. Would or could be as good as the food from Xicamiti La Taqueria Bistro. The owner greeted and served us. I started with a Horchata while we looked at the menu. I asked him what he recommends, and was happy to take his first suggestion of pork belly tacos as being the most flavorful. My husband chose for steak tacos, no cilantro. I wasn't starving when we visited, as everything tastes better when you're starving, but these tacos were incredible. The right blend of spice, sweet pineapple, hunks of tender pork. Just the right amount of green onion and slaw. Then there's the hot sauce. It was hot. He suggested that I add a couple drops on top to kick the flavor. I used all of mine and the ones on my husband's plate. (He doesn't do heat). I was in heaven. The horchata was cooling and refreshing. I left with my mind blown at how good the food was we just had. I only wish I was hungry for more. To try other tacos. You CANNOT skip a visit if you in the area.

Yelp
We came here for lunch last week after walking along the River walk. This place is unassuming in appearance, but it is clean and bright on the inside. Hubs and I had a margarita, and they were cold, refreshing, and strong! We got the chicken and shrimp tacos. They were plated beautifully, seasoned well, and delicious! We wish we lived locally so we could try more items on the menu! The cost was very fair, and we loved the attention from the owner.
google avatar

Yelp
Loved this place. Came for lunch with friends. Excellent food, drinks and service. Will be back.

Yelp
Stopped in today for a late lunch on the way back from the mountains. Thank you fellow Yelpers! This place was absolutely delicious and will be our new go to stop come ski season. Conveniently located right off the highway. Fantastic service, The queso fundido was heavily and not to be missed, the house margarita was perfect and not overly sweet, the pork belly tacos were crunchy and melt in your mouth, and the smothered chicken burrito was also a hit. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Zak S.

Yelp
The owner chef and wife are incredibly nice. The food is next level. While you have to order only how it is on the menu (no mixing tacos). You won't be disappointed. I had the corn quesadilla with meat that came with 2 side sauces, home made. When the chef presented the plate he shared his suggestion on how to use the sauces and they were delicious. I could have had the same meal again if I was not full. A bit on the higher priced side but well worth it. The burrito my husband had was incredibly tasty and full of flavor. This was clean quality ingredient Mexican food as opposed to heavy and greasy. I would say this is gourmet Mexican. Definitely going back
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Well I'm not a span of chorizo so that eliminated quite a few items on the menu and also the items do not come with your traditional beans and rice on the side you have to pay extra for each one of those at four bucks each there are no taco chips there's some kind of a crispy looking wheel with Valentina instead of chips. Also you cannot mix and match your taco order. Sad for solo diners who would like to try 3 different ones. Not impressed. I do not understand the 5 star ratings The size of the sauce bowls are just larger than a quarter. As you can see in the pic...just a sprinkle of cheese.
google avatar

A Marie J.

Yelp
Very dry steak tacos. It was hard to chew the meat. Restaurant is really hot and stuffy inside. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
You could easily drive right by this spot and not realize it's an incredibly delicious and authentic Mexican restaurant. It's delicious, and there's usually a line to get in even though it's in an unassuming parking lot on the edge of Golden. One of the unique things on the menu is the real corn flan for dessert. This is different than any I've had before, and it was delicious!

Donny A.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the service was quick! Its a small family restaurant and everyone is so friendly. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for great Mexican food.
google avatar

Tyler N.

Yelp
So so so good! I've heard so many good things about this place, but it truly was better than mentioned. Their Cheladas are so good! I got the La Adultera and it was fantastic and not too sweet. I tried my friends more classic michelada and it was so good. My partner got the kiwi marg an, surprise, it was so tasty. For food, I got the birria ramen, and it was so savory and so tasty. We stopped by this place after a day at the river. It was the perfect meal that kept us refreshed. Definitely coming again!

Todd N.

Yelp
The BEST Mexican food I have had in my mouth! I had the Barbacoa Quesadillas. My wife had a Smothered Carnitas Burrito. The owner was very kind and patient with us explaining his food. He has such pride in his creations and it shows. Great place, great people, great price, clean bathroom, and the BEST MEXICAN FOOD.
google avatar

Matt R.

Yelp
I love this place and it is my go to for incredible authentic Mexican food with incredible Margaritas! The owner is fantastic, this restaurant is like eating at a friends home in Mexico City. Thank you for bringing this to Colorado

Deni P.

Yelp
Had lunch today and it was off the charts delicious! Margaritas were crafted with care and the food was excellent. Best Mexican I've probably ever had! Service was awesome. We almost didn't go as location is in a strip mall but so glad we did! We will definitely return.
google avatar

Jerry P.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful staff!!! And the food was oh my goodness so good! We were traveling and found this place on Yelp, and all the hundreds of five star reviews were definitely deserved!!!!

Liz M.

Yelp
Great place, I believe it is family owned, their business has taken off like a rocket. So proud and the food is very good, authentic.!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Delicious food and the best michelada I've ever had. I had the camarones ramen and I drank the broth at the end it was so good. Attentive service from the friendly owner. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
Wow what a gem! My husband had the compachanos and I had the camaron. Likely misspelled both words but excellent flavor! Great service too. Don't skip out on this--exterior may seem rough but the inside is nice and clean with a good movie to entertain the kids.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
3.5 Stars.... The cardinal sin ( welp at least to this gringo) is to serve fantastic meats on store bought tortillas. It is just no bueno in my book. I loved both the al pastor (although I like mine more crispy prepared on a spite not saucy like this) and the Barbaccoa. The two sauces were very good as well and you can purchase bottles there. But those flimsy wonder bread like tortillas??? Por Que Por Que Por Que? The complimentary vegan Chicharron were cool although pork skin is fine by me. Would I drive from Denver to Golden for a meal here....ah probably not but If you're in the neighborhood I would stop by and check out their tacos.

Susan B.

Yelp
The food was authentic and absolutely delicious. The staff were pleasant and very attentive even though they were very busy. I am looking forward to dining there again soon.

J M.

Yelp
We love this place as the food is always so fresh and flavorful! The pastor burrito and the shrimp tacos are definitely standouts, but everything on the menu is wonderful. Also make sure to order the margarita with the kiwi infusion. Being from Texas originally, I like to think I have high standards for margaritas, and that drink hits the spot every time. The michelada is a star on the drink menu as well (my wife orders one every time we go). The owner is super friendly and the service is always top notch. The menu and food is a little different than your standard Mexican food restaurant, but in the best way possible. Just go and enjoy!
google avatar

Shawn S.

Yelp
So stoked we found this gem! The flavors are multi-level - each ingredients flavor shining through. The Queso is loaded with ingredients: chorizo, cheese, onions, poblanos, and tomatoes. The margaritas are delish! I had the mango/habanero one For main dish, the Campechanos with steak, chorizo, and onions in a chipotle salsa. Staff and service was exceptional as well. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Popped in for a quick bite after a nearby hike and ordered a smothered carnitas burrito. The meat was cooked perfectly and was butter-y tender! The burrito was a good portion for the price and was tasty, but didn't have a ton of flavor. I'll be back to try a breakfast burrito (only available til noon) and some tacos.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Amazing authentic food! The pastor tacos were incredible and the margarita hit the spot! 10/10 recommend!
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
Wow! The best tacos I've ever had! I had the chIcharon tacos. Sweet and a bit of a kick too! They have a really nice variety of tequilas as well! The owners daughter is so sweet and so informative. They sell Bohemia too!!
google avatar

Tamara M.

Yelp
We had a margarita each, and they were served in a clay glass. I had the vegetarian tacos and added the quinoa the portion size was above average and the flavors were delicious. They were able to accommodate gluten sensitivity. Thank you.
google avatar

Karen E.

Yelp
Amazing! Just go! We will be coming here every time we visit our son at school! Service was the wonderful and just get whatever Walter (owner/head chef) says you should get! OMG!
google avatar

Cassie C.

Yelp
Saw the fabulous reviews here on Yelp so we decided to try it out. We walked in about an hour before closing and it was busy. The service was great! It is run by a family and they're really friendly! My boyfriend and I both had tacos and they were fantastic! Probably the best Mexican food I've had! Everything was fresh and homemade. I don't normally like flan but their version was unique and delicious! Their margaritas were on point too! Be sure to check out this great spot and support a local business!
google avatar

Gary E.

Yelp
Small place, but prices were really good and the service was excellent. The food was wonderful, it's too bad we don't live in Colorado.
google avatar

J Warren R.

Yelp
What a great find -- best tacos ever. The pork belly tacos (3) were mouthwatering and simply delicious. The mescal margarita was sweet, tasty and perfectly prepared. Delicious horchata. But go here for the tacos, they rule. Exceptional and friendly service. Simple decor. Plenty of parking in their lot. I'll be back soon. Can't wait to try something else!

Julie R.

Yelp
Visiting from MN, I have been using Yelp to find the best spots and this one did not disappoint! We ordered the Birria Ramen and the Rajas Con Queso. The food was incredibly flavorful. The service was second to none. Comfortable spot that was easy to find. 10/10 today! I wish I lived in Colorado so I could come back!!

Yelp
We discovered this place after a day of climbing at Clear Creek. We loved that it's within a few minutes of Clear Creek because we were so famished! It was crowded when we got there -- it's a good sign, but we were able to get a table at the back of the restaurant. Seems like it's a very busy spot with the high school students. They have an extensive menu with interesting foods. Our server was very friendly and explained to us that their food doesn't represent a specific region of Mexico, but rather some of the dishes are recipes from the chef's family and some of them are famous chef creations. Our server also often came around often to check on us. I loved that they served us with complimentary Chicharron chips as soon as we got seated along with some hot sauce that we could add ourselves (there was someone in our group that couldn't really handle much spice). We also ordered a variety of margaritas, and they served us with the margs in the cutest ceramic mugs! I ordered the smokey mezcal margarita and it was delicious! Very smokey and very strong! We ordered a few appetizers to share. The cheesy dip was amazing!!! I loved that it was served in a skillet and the cheese got very melty and fried where it came into contact with the skillet. We also got a variety of tacos to share. The Campechanos was my favorite of the tacos we ordered. The flavors of the meats were delicious and it paired so well with the salsa. Al pastor tacos was really interesting. Delicious, but it definitely surprised me that it was on the sweeter side. Also got the camaron tacos as well as the steak tacos. They were good, but not as memorable as the other two. We decided to splurge on the calories and also ended up getting the flan dessert. It was delicious! I loved the mix of the flan + cornmeal texture. Overall, this place is a complete gem! Everything is very affordably priced, and the flavors are amazing!

Jessica B.

Yelp
This is a spot that's clean, small, and relaxed. This is also a space that's dedicated to what it does, and they do it so well. These are the best tacos I have had from a restaurant in Colorado, bar none. Before I get to the food, be aware of a few things: 1. No chips and salsa. No guac. No sopapillas. 2. You can't mix and match tacos. You get three of one type. 3. No flour tortillas for tacos (awesome for GF folks) That said, WOW. They took wonderful care of us (we were a large party with more kids than adults, and three adults with food allergies). The tacos were fresh, flavorful, and unlike anything I've had before. A step above what I've experienced in the many excellent Mexican places around. Everything was made to order, the tortillas were fresh, and the flavors were well developed. The basic tacos were so flavorful on their own, one of us didn't add any salsa until her third taco! And the salsa! Their salsas were wonderful. Complex flavors, with citrus and herbal notes. Both spicy and mild were offered. Here's what we ordered: Tacos campechanos Tacos carnitas Tacos Al pastor Quesadillas suizas All excellent. Would order again. We didn't have a chance to try any drinks, but we will be coming back. We are so looking forward to next time!

Yelp
Xicamiti does tacos right. The flavors are delicious and they were full of meat. Someone even came out and told us how to use the sauces given with the tacos correctly for the best flavors. I wish you were able to mix and match, but I understand why not. Not the typical chips and salsa to start which is awesome. Not a ton of room for seating inside but they do have a little patio that you can sit outside when it's nice out. A must try when in Golden!

Amy J.

Yelp
Spectacular food and service! You'll have a great time experience here. Authentic flavors and great Mexican beers.
