The Best Bars and Restaurants in Uptown Oakland | Eater SF

"This self-proclaimed “Mission-style” taqueria features an addictive bacon-wrapped hot dog on the menu, as well as a vegan version of pozole that affirms its dedication to serving the community around it. The casual spot comprises of a patio, a mezzanine, and a dining room, offering selections of Mexican beers and six-ounce glasses of wine." - Paolo Bicchieri

Xolo Review - Uptown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you’re looking for a quick bite to avoid drinking in Uptown Oakland on an empty stomach, head to Xolo, an excellent taqueria right around the corner from the 19th St. Bart Station. They make fantastic al pastor, crispy tacos with beef, and burritos. And on Fridays, they’re open until midnight. Xolo is also a great hangover spot (get the Vampiro taco with al pastor and fried cheese), but just know the lunch lines can sometimes get long." - Lani Conway

Google
Awesome place and their desire to put out a good product is on point. Had 2 tacos ... worth the money. Great place for eats before a show or whenever you are in the area. Get a churro to top of the meal for sure.

Google
Delicious, casual spot, quick and friendly service! We got tacos and the medium-sized but very mushroom burrito. Good vibes, great location.

Google
This place was great! June 2021 and indoor dining is open. I ordered the surf and turf burrito. My girl ordered shrimp tacos. I love the decor and the taste of the food here. Shrimp here is really good! They sell Little Giant Ice Cream too. I'd come back again.

Gregory Collins

Google
I was craving a breakfast burrito and wanted to try a new spot. I've been here before but I never tried their breakfast burritos. I'm always greeted with positive energy when I enter this place. The serving portion sizes are large and the food is always tasty. If you can find parking, you definitely want to consider stopping here for breakfast.

Google
Best vegetarian tacos around. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. The people are great and the restaurant has tons of seating, including a small outdoor area out back. The portions are generous and I love coming here alone and with my friends as well!

Jose Palomares

Google
Great location across the theater and good range of choices but my all pastor tacos were just ok, nothing to write home about. The back patio is nice but the common room is just ok. What I didn't like is that they serve you super fast because they seem to have everything precooked and they just warm it up. of course I don't expect Mexican food to be made from scratch but I can tell when it's just too fast which means my ingredients will be bland. And they were.

Jahmeen Lopez

Google
Supposedly they only have seasonal pozole but I’ve ordered pozole from here 4 times since June (twice on DoorDash, two over the phone)….. whoever answered the phone, scoffed when I said that I ordered it two weeks ago…… interesting .

Mike Nolan

Google
Excellent food. I had a Chile Verde burrito, a flour quesadilla, chips & guacamole, and a salad. All the ingredients were very flavorful and obviously fresh and high quality. I also had a strawberry aqua fresca that was especially tasty. All of the staff at Xolo were very friendly and accommodating. I had been wanting to come here for years and now I very much regret not making the effort sooner... But, now I know for myself how good it is and I look forward to many more visits in the future. Parking can be tricky and definitely do not leave anything of value in your car, at least not visible.

Yelp
Greatest tacos in all of Oakland Anything less than 5 stars is someone upset about price (they are worth well over $5 each) or bought the wrong thing Get the beef and vampiro tacos, you won't regret it. Been the same for 15 years and I will never stop coming here. Great people, fun vibe, and a relaxing atmosphere. Service is A-1

Yelp
**Pleasantly surprised -- fantastic food and friendly service!** I'll admit, I was skeptical about trying Xolo after seeing the poor Yelp reviews. If it hadn't been for a work lunch, I probably wouldn't have gone. But I'm so glad I did--this place exceeded expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. They brought us extra salsas with our chips without us even asking, and they happily offered to take group photos for our team. It made the whole experience feel really welcoming. Food-wise, everything I had was excellent. The chips were crisp and perfectly salty, and the pico de gallo was fresh and flavorful. I ordered the quesadillas suizas with pollo, and they were amazing--crispy tortillas, melty cheese, and great flavor and texture all around. Would definitely go back. Don't let the Yelp rating deter you--Xolo is worth a try.

Yelp
Tasty, generous portions, high quality food. Their chicken is so juicy and well seasoned. Their carne asada tacos are just wonderful. I love their mango agua fresca too. Friendly staff

Yelp
A casual and laid back taqueria, with inviting decor and plenty of seating inside. We ordered online in advance (for dine-in) and it only took about 8 minutes for our food to be ready, with helpful notifications via text. Got the chile relleno and surf n turf burrito minus the beans, and the latter was a flimsy burrito, scarce with the toppings. On top of that, everything tasted a bit dry even with the oils of the ingredients inside, my bf couldn't even finish the chile relleno. So, it wasn't exactly our favorite meal, but at least the service and atmosphere were great.
google avatar

Yelp
Surprised with the low rating because I really enjoyed it! The beyond meat tacos were packed with flavor and well balanced seasoning wise. Their tacos are stuffed to the brim so they're a bit messy to eat but totally worth it. The only caveat I can think of is the price to size ratio for the tacos is not that great - having a full meal means having at least three tacos so ~$16+. Also appreciated how many vegetarian options they had - the beyond meat tacos, mushroom tacos, and the vegeteriano. There's tons of indoor seating with a nice casual vibe so this is a perfect spot to drop by for lunch if you're in the area.

Yelp
I ordered the chorizo breakfast burrito and wow! 10/10. The staff were all very friendly and they had our order ready as soon as I arrived. Cute inside as well, but I placed a to go order. Also, they had clean restrooms which is also nice.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is very home cooked authentic and delicious. Husband has the chili verde burrito and he could not eat it fast enough.

Yelp
Solid spot for Mexican food right across from Fox Theater! On my most recent visit, my party of 3 came by for dinner around 6:30 pm on Friday and it was half full. The tables slowly all filled up over the next hour as we were eating. You order at the front, get a number, and they'll bring your order to you. I shared the chips and salsa ($3.75) with my friends and got the surf and turf burrito for $13.95 as my entree. I was starving, so I was really happy they're so quick with bringing the food out to you. All of us had our food within minutes of ordering! The burrito was a bit on the smaller side but was more than enough to fill me up. You really can't beat the combination of carne asada + shrimp, especially when it's nice and buttery and served wrapped in a burrito with rice and beans. It was a very satisfying meal and really hit the spot for me!

Yelp
Best burritos in the world! Great tacos too in a sweet little location in uptown Oaktown

Berk G.

Yelp
I went to Xolo after not going there for over ten years. It was no surprise that there burritos remain great. I bought 2 vegetatiano burritos and 2 chips with salsa. The burritos were well packed with no leakage when I arrived home and opened one. The salsa and the burrito sauce were fresh. My husband swallowed it up. But I could only eat half. I highly recommend Xolo.

Yelp
It's a favorite for me. Xolo's gets it right every time. The chicken is marinated to perfection. The mushroom tacos are excellent. I love the gooey black beans that they fill their burritos with mmmm. I feel like I'm in a family kitchen, I literally feel right at home. The service is excellent. Salsas are sooooo good. I can always count on a cold beer to pair with my tacos. I love Xolo!!
google avatar

Sanjana S.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and sat in the cute back area. I got chips and salsa as an appetizer and the camarones & chile verde tacos. I liked the chile verde taco and wish the camarones taco had more of the aioli since it tasted dry to me. I also got the mango agua fresca which is also solid. I also got their sugar with sprinkles and chocolate chip cookie to try later. Although both were solid, I wouldn't get them again. Overall, I would return for their agua frescas and to try some other tacos.

Yelp
This place filled my taco craving. Plentiful menu options including tacos, burritos, soups and salads with some daily specials (like beef tongue). Order at the front counter and take your number and they will deliver the food hot to your table. There is plenty of seating inside but tone down the tunes a bit and head to the back where there are a couple tables of outdoor seating under what appears to be a grapevine. I stuck with the fish tacos this first time and the arbol aioli was craveable. I can't wait to return to try the burritos and maybe the crunchy taco.

Matthew O.

Yelp
My daughter and I stopped by for lunch. The interior is roomy, clean, and colorful. We ordered a pollo burrito, a chili verde burrito, and a camerone taco. Each dish was very flavorful. Service was prompt and correct. Looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Xolo is a solid spot for tacos. It's more expensive that the taco truck but the ingredients they use are really high quality. I love their Vampiro taco (if you eat meat) it's Al pastor (pork), salsa ranchera, red onions, cilantro, fried cheese tortilla. The fried cheese is a nice touch. I also love their Shrimp taco. Batter fried shrimp, arbol aioli, cilantro, cabbage, lime. It's crispy and spicy and crunchy. Super tasty. I have not dined at the restaurant I have only gotten takeout so I'm not sure what the service or ambiance is like at their brick and mortar. I highly recommend this spot if you're looking for quality tacos with the freshest ingredients.
google avatar

Andrea T.

Yelp
I'm a bit shocked at the low reviews. I come here frequently for their Pozole Rojo, fried plátanos and crispy beef tacos. All are very good! I've always had quick service and I love the colorful decor. Must try!
google avatar

Akiko I.

Yelp
Haven't gone back recently as I live in New York but reacting to the "Oh no!" reaction from an angry young local woman who probably has zero friends of Asian descent. Someone else on here wrote that it was their "second time coming here and it's really delicious. They have one of the best carne asada tacos and burritos in Oakland" and that's a BIPOC local who also wrote "We will be back again soon when I need a authentic socal tasting burrito!!" Sigh.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
I'm broken hearted I ordered my usual - a crispy beef taco and a battered fish taco. The good news is that I received my tacos in about 2 minutes. The bad news is that my tacos were cold to tepid at best. I'm not paranoid, but they were not edible. Matt says that Xolo taqueria is getting a bit lazy. I'll try again though. I love this place.
google avatar

G F.

Yelp
I love the hibiscus tea and the crispy tacos and beans. It's a great spot for meeting up with friends! Food is quick and you can watch them make the food! Never disappointed but my friends who don't like cheese as much take issue but still my go to spot!

Yelp
Somewhat of a hole in the wall, but not that small and has a vibrant exterior. So maybe more like a door in the wall. Came here for a group lunch on a weekday and we all left satisfied. Our group of 8 ordered and sat in the spacious backroom, they have a picnic table that is perfect for groups. Plus a TV that was playing the World Cup so bonus points. But back to the food. I got the beef taco and chile verde taco. I almost ordered 3 cause I am used to tiny street food tacos, but these were sizable and filled to the gill with meat! So 2 is perfect unless you are just plain starving. The beef taco was different, with a fried shell, so the texture was on point, and the filling was fine just not as flavorful as the chile verde which was the star of the show. I would get two of those next time. Succulent, flavorful, drippy with every bite! $5 per taco that eats like 2 street tacos is just right. Service was super friendly and really accommodating for our large group, putting everything on one bill. And we all got our food within 10 minutes so their timing is on point. A couple of orders of guac and chips was perfect, so 3-4 people per order is good. I also got an horchata and it was well blended and sweet till the last drop. Definitely worth checking out!
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Stopped in recently for lunch, old school feel taco house with walk up counter service. Order off the board overhead, pay, grab your number and a seat. First, these are really good street tacos. There are other options too, but the tacos are very tasty. I went for the Pollo (2) and Chile Verde(1), three tacos with a side of chips and salsa. Someone will bring you your food when its ready, all in all about 10 minutes. The pollo was good, nicely seasoned and a good portion but a little on the dry side okay but not great. The chili verde was exceptional, tender succulent pork with a tangy verde sauce that was really good and wish I had gotten two of those. Of the two options I went with, the Chile Verde was the winner. The chips and salsa were also good, both housemade chips and salsa was flavorful with some heat, the chips fresh made and crispy crunchy. Along with a pineapple Jaritos it was a very good meal. 4 Stars - the food is good, and the service friendly worth a visit 00821
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
We ate fish and lengua tacos. Not both on same taco, obvs. Fish was fried, batter crispy. Aioli on the fish was tangy and slightly spicy. Language was super tender, served with a tasty green sauce . Casual atmosphere, could use some acoustic panels or something to cut down the reverb. Courteous, efficient staff. We will be going back to try more food - great 1st impressions!

Jackson Z.

Yelp
I will start by saying my review only applies to their takeout. I have not dined in, so the dining experience may vary. I have their takeout almost every other week as part of my company provided lunch, and each time I'm disappointed by the quality and lack of flavor. I do not recommend the burritos. There have been several times where my burrito was not wrapped properly and arrived dripping, leaving me to have to eat in front of my coworkers with my hands drenched. There is a general lack of flavor with their food. I've tried the burritos, tacos, and salad, and each of them have been quite bland. The chips are okay though, and the salsa is not bad.
google avatar

Neha A.

Yelp
Had a nice casual dinner here with friends earlier this month. The prices are affordable for Oakland with each taco being priced at about five dollars with multiple options including vegetarian and pescatarian options. I was tempted to get a burrito which goes for about $13 but went for tacos instead. I really enjoyed my carne asada and fish taco with a Mexican Coke. Unfortunately, they didn't have churros on the day we went so we did not try dessert. My friend got the elote which looked decent, but I'm not sure I would get it personally. The interior of the restaurant is simple, casual, and fun. It's self service, but the ambience is good.
google avatar

Kendra W.

Yelp
So this is my husband and my second time coming here and it's really delicious. They have one of the best carne asada tacos and burritos in Oakland. I like to get the carne asada burrito because they have a choice of getting retired beans, pinto or black beans where many places don't have all 3 options! My husband likes the surf and turf burrito which is full of shrimp and asada! The chips and guacamole is good too! Give it a try. We will be back again soon when I need a authentic socal tasting burrito!!
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
This place is honestly a hidden gem ! Parking is kind of tough sometimes but burritos are absolutely delicious. Their black beans are very tasty. The ambiance is cool they always have nice music and the place itself is colorful. Great customer service as well.
google avatar

Amina G.

Yelp
Let me tell you, they put crack in their crunchy beef tacos. That's the only way to explain hoe good they are. They see me at least 2x a week, and I do mean at LEAST! Fresh veggies, yummy salsa. I want to try the burritos but can't let go of the tacos. The employees are so sweet & I feel like I see them so much, they're my friends. Super cute setting on the inside and located right across from the Fox Theatre. IF YOURR THINKING OF COMING HERE, DO IT!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
I would like to give this place a good review but every time I go in there no matter how friendly I am the attitude is so nasty from the people of the register that I even feel that someone would do something to my food the environment is absolutely toxic. It is unfortunate for me to have to write such a review. I do not trust this place because of the hateful attitudes.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Have you tried the pozole? Aaaaammaaazziing. Hands down probably the best thing on their menu. I also tried the shrimp and fish tacos. The shrimp was good, however I got 2 shrimp and the rest fish in my shrimp tacos. And the fish taco was ok. I got sick for the rest of the day which wasn't exciting for me. But I would def go again and try something else... just maybe not the seafood.
google avatar

Monifa S.

Yelp
I would give Xolo a 3.5/5. Came here before going bar hopping with a friend. This is a cute little place that has really good food. I truly wasn't expecting the food to be as good as it was. You order at the register and then you could take a seat and they would bring out the food. The ambiance is very casual and laid back. The setting is If you wanted, you could sit outside but it was too cold for that. I ordered chips and guac and 2 carne asada topics. The chips and guac were huge. Definitely can be shared. The tacos were good. They had a nice flavor to them. The salsa was also very good. This was a nice little place to grab something to eat before hitting the bars.
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
Quick stop before we head into the city and it did not disappoint! Oh man these shrimp tacos just brought me back to life. Creamy sauce with just the right amount of crunchy cabbage. Great customer service and the food was on the table within 5 minutes of sitting down! I'll be back later this week to try the Chile relleno burrito! Thanks Xolo!

Giselle R.

Yelp
Ambiance is great I love there vegetarian burritos and agua fresca this spot is a go to
google avatar

Michele L.

Yelp
Fantastic tacos. But the music is so loud I probably won't come back. (Here are the extra characters I need to post this review.)
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Ordered ahead here a month or so ago; parking was a little dicey because there was an event across the street at the Fox theatre but we found a spot a couple blocks away. The burrito was pricey but good with a pretty minimal interior and servers who are particularly friendly. Overall three stars; it's ok if you need a burrito in the neighborhood but other places are cheaper with food on par with Xolo.
google avatar

Laurie H.

Yelp
Another review update... And I'll rate it for exactly what it was for me today. I needed something fast, delicious, and not too much food. Based on those criteria, they absolutely delivered. About 1:15 on Thursday afternoon, I walked in, ordered my normal mushroom taco (well, normal for me from 9 and 10 years ago when I came here all the time lol) at the counter, paid, was handed a number for the table and sat down. Approximately 1 to 2 minutes later, they delivered my taco. And it was perfection. It does not get any simpler than that, so thank you Xolo. And I'm really happy you're still around!
google avatar

Kyle M.

Yelp
Unassuming downtown taco spot but quite good! The staff is friendly and your order arrives fast. I think the portion size here is excellent for the price, especially nowadays. I didn't get chips n guac this time, but when you do, they load you up. Easy parking up front if you roll over on a bicycle or moto! Went with - 2x crispy beef 1x carnitas 1x fish 1x carne asada I recommend sticking with the crispy beef! Maybe I'm biased but I'm all about that fresh hardshell with melted cheese, which is why I keep coming back here lol. Gotta get the orange Jarritos as well for that sugar overload :D
google avatar

Kimson D.

Yelp
My go-to spot for tacos in Oakland! I love their fish tacos and carne asada tacos, - the flavor is great, as well as the service. They have special tacos of the day written on the chalkboard as well, and I always try to add one to my usual order. High quality, authentic ingredients and I love their horchatas. The vibe of the place is cheerful, colorful, and bright -it's what caught my eye from the street! They also have plenty of outdoor seating if you'd prefer to dine and people watch. Parking can be tough along this busy street so be mindful of the parking signs. Definitely recommend trying this taqueria if you're near Oakland and have a taco craving.
google avatar

James M.

Yelp
Loved the Crispy Carne Asada tacos! Just like my Tia would have made. Chips and salsa were authentic which is my litmus test for any "Mexican" food joint. Will eagerly return.

A A.

Yelp
Ok decided to try this place .. close to work .. I found the food over priced, I guess when we hear mexican food we think tasty, large portions and decent priced, this place was not either of these 3 .. sorry to find out I no longer have a option for mexican food near my job.
google avatar

Jade B.

Yelp
This place is giving hidden gem! I have never been until today and I'm glad i did! I got the chili verde taco & the pastor taco! A little sad that there was no pineapple in the pastor; but that's perfectly fine bc the chili verde taco was ! This was one of the best chili verde i have had, I'm very picky but this one passed the test. It's real cute inside, nice vibe and I'll forsure be back to try more.

Lee A.

Yelp
Great breakfast burrito! Went in on a Friday morning and got our food pretty fast. Surprised this place wasn't busier
google avatar

Casey S.

Yelp
Xolo has fresh Mexican food with some unique options like surf and turf burritos. They certainly give you plenty of food, and everything comes out fresh. Bit expensive for a regular burrito - and you have to pay extra for chips - but still pretty solid overall.
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
Wow! Another great restaurant discovery in Oakland! Using the Caviar app, I ordered the Surf and Turf Burrito, 2 taco deal.....(Crispy Beef and Taco Pollo), and Churros. Very good food! You folks who left neg reviews must of ordered when it was really busy. I placed my order at 12 Noon on a Sunday. The tacos were presented well......just beautiful. And they travelled well in the container. The Crispy beef taco is so crisp and crunchy. The meat is fresh and juicy. Toppings have a burst of flavor that shout out GOOD STUFF served here. The Taco Pollo is good, with it's savory marinated chicken. OK, $11 for a Shrimp and Beef Burrito, is it worth it? It's a large heavy burrito wrapped in foil. It's got shrimp, beef, beans, rice and cheese. The jalapenos got my attention. I liked it, it's enough for a meal by itself. There's no overpowering flavors. That's another thing, there's no spicy house dressing or hot sauce added to the food. So there's nothing hiding the true flavor. Oh yeah, there's no free chips or sauces. But that's ok with me, because I want to try your food.....not hide it with spicy sauces. Good food is worth the price! (Delivery by Caviar during Covid-19)

Yelp
East bay burrito review #13 First taste - 5/7 Meat - 5/7 Beans - 5/7 Rice - 6/7 Cheese - 4/7 Tortilla - 6/7 Salsa - 5/7 Avocado sauce - 6/7 Overall - 5/7 I tried Xolo many years back and I don't remember liking it so much, but I was pretty happy with my burrito this time. Only real nitpicks were the meat was a little chewy and the cheese was a little too melted. Too soupy maybe. The avocado sauce really brightened the thing up.
google avatar

Jacob R.

Yelp
Love this spot! They have a wide variety of burritos for those with simple palates or the more adventurous, and the service is super quick. I've never waited more than two minutes in line and usually my burrito is on my table three minutes after I've sat down. So fast! I've dined in for lunch and dinner and it's always busy but it's never hard to find a table. If you work in the neighborhood or if you're looking for a quick bite before a show at the Fox Oakland, this is the best spot.
google avatar

Marlene A.

Yelp
delish mexican food right in downtown oakland by the fox theatre! i'm a big fan of their vegetarian and vegan options, particularly their tacos (beyond meat) and veggie burrito. everything is incredibly filling and there's a water station with water cups as well!
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
I come here every time I'm in town, it's a great spot right off the subway and the food is superb. Two tacos and chips will do you. Huge space, great people. Not much more to say, other than just some solid-solid tacos.

Michael B.

Yelp
I went there for lunch today. I'd been there before and the food was prepared okay. I ordered the chicken burrito. It was supposed to have black beans and rice along with the other ingredients on the menu. It was a very slim burrito. The tortilla was tough like rubber, the chicken and sauces tasted fine but, where's the rice and beans?? Haha! In the bottom one third of the burrito was the rice but no beans. I really dislike it when the ingredients of a burrito are not distributed at least, somewhat evenly throughout a burrito.. It's disrespectful food service! It says that they don't care about the food or the customers. You can't enjoy the food as it was meant to be enjoyed. Who the hell wants someone to make them a sloppy burrito like that. I won't be back.
google avatar

Kaiah M.

Yelp
Hands down, my fave burrito around in Oakland, @ least ATM (vs. SF fave- La Taqueria, 25th/Mission, in SF; no I don't work there or get a kickback they are just *awesome*). Get the Mar y Tierra...grilled shrimp, grilled steak, grilled onions (note: I ask for light on the grilled onions, cuz sometimes they go a lil overboard in quantity) + cheese, jalapeños, rice & beans (but I love that they *do not* use TOO much R&B, like some places do, as tho they're trying to skimp on pricier ingredients?) and finally: I suggest adding sour cream (guac too if u feel like it, but still rocks w/o)... incredible. Also get the Pozole soup if you have room, or save for next day (it gets even better). Served with shredded red cabbage, as it should be. Yummy and tastes just like my HS BFF's Mom used to make... PS. Ensalada de Casa is one of the *best* salads around IMO...and I'm not a big salad person, generally. The ingredients are perfect and the dressing (some sort of house made citrus vinaigrette) is amazing.
