"Despite the Gossip Girl-esque name, this sushi newcomer in Chestnut Hill should not be overlooked. Like other spots on this list, XOXO specializes in Edomae-style sushi, led by executive chef and Uni alum Kegan Stritchko. The restaurant offers six seatings on Tuesday and Wednesday for a $195, 16-course omakase if you’re looking for a worthy splurge, or eat your way through the a la carte menu of nigiri, sashimi, temaki, and fiery robatayaki choices." - Erika Adams, Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

"It’s been a banner year for new, high-end sushi spots cropping up in and around the Boston area. One of the latest new entries is XOXO Sushi Bar, which put down roots in Chestnut Hill. (For those driving in, the complimentary valet parking is a nice touch.) Executive chef Kegan Stritchko, an alum of Ken Oringer’s luxurious sushi restaurant Uni and the more casual sushi spot Fat Baby in South Boston, takes an experimental approach to items like Ora King salmon sashimi, here paired with a Thai herb puree and fermented gooseberry salsa, and plates like a buttery, flaky, miso-marinated black cod served with pickled radishes and blistered shishito peppers. There’s also a robatayaki section of the menu featuring charcoal-grilled skewers including Hokkaido scallops with lemon miso butter and skirt steak with cured egg yolk." - Erika Adams, Nathan Tavares

"This high-end American Japanese sushi bar landed on Route 9 in Chestnut Hill just this March. Chef Kegan Stritchko, formerly of Uni and Fat Baby Sushi, serves a modern Edomae-style sushi menu highlighting fresh, high-quality seafood from local suppliers. Order a la carte sushi, hand rolls, or robatayaki, traditional Japanese charcoal-grilled meat and vegetables. Enjoy this restaurant’s high ceilings, gorgeous woodwork, and bold wallpaper when dining in since XOXO doesn’t offer takeout." - Carolyn Grillo

Google
The service was absolutely amazing, as was our food. We had Jose and Jenish as our servers and they were incredible. The food was amazing especially as people who eat sushi regularly. They went above and beyond to make our dining experience wonderful. 100% would recommend.

I had an incredible dining experience at XOXO Sushi in Boston! The food was absolutely phenomenal. The Japanese tuna was hands down the best I’ve ever had, and the crab hand roll with brown butter was out of this world. A true must-try! Our server, Trinh, was fantastic—attentive, friendly, and made the meal even more enjoyable. If you’re looking for amazing sushi with top-notch service, XOXO Sushi is the place to go!

Came here to celebrate an anniversary when we were visiting the Boston area and I’m so glad we found this GEM. Every dish we had was better than the last- amazing flavor profiles, fresh ingredients, and a truly unique take on Japanese food that respects tradition but still has fun with it. In addition to that, the atmosphere and service were top notch. Complimentary valet service had me feeling so fancy. Then you walk in and the restaurant is beautiful- it feels intimate and luxurious. Everyone we spoke to was incredibly kind and funny- we really enjoyed the hostess (didn’t catch her name but she was lovely) and especially our server, Amanda C. One of her recommendations ended up being one of our favorite dishes of the night!! We will absolutely be coming back when we’re back in the area.

My friend and I did a New Year’s Eve dinner here. The food tasted amazing, the presentation was beautiful and the atmosphere was alluring. The portions are on a small side, so don’t expect to get super full unless you order a ton of different bites.

Google
The food was well worth the price and experience. Jose was attentive but not overbearing. The chef clearly has a deft hand with flavor and combined surprising flavors in balanced and delicious ways.

I came for the very first time to this hidden gem and it was amazing! If you visit the Newton area don’t forget to visit XoXo Sushi. The staff was extremely helpful and every dish despite the size it was full of flavor and the presentation was adorable. The drinks were very tasty and refreshing 😍I would definitely go back again!!!

As soon as you walk in the atmosphere is phenomenal. Manger greeted us and walked us in which was so nice. This was my second time coming and Jose was our server both times and he is so attentive and patient. The food is absolutely delicious and service is incredible.

Google
The food was amazing! Our server Amanda C was so kind and provided us with the most welcoming and helpful service. She was able to provide recommendations based on our specific preferences and all of her recommendations were spot on. The fish was fresh and the food high quality in both taste and appearance. The interior of the restaurant was very exciting with its fun and innovative decor. We will definitely be coming back!

Yelp
This place has potential. Super clean facilities and a great ambiance. However - our food took well over 2 hours to come out along with many of our orders of sushi running out through the meal and having to replace our orders. The service is okay, they honestly just need more people on the floor. The food that did make it to the table was absolutely phenomenal. The music that management played was truthfully god awful for the ambiance (bangers, early 2000s rap usually hits but not at a classy dinner). Yeah so overall- potential for sure. But it's not quite right and it's a bummer. Servers need more training, as do the sushi chefs. Overpriced for the experience. Hope they turn it around because this is a restaurant with beautiful potential.

Yelp
A hidden gem in Chestnut Hill with great food! Perfect for date night or a night out with friends. Our server was attentive and quick, which we appreciated very much. We loved the madai uzusukuri, pork belly bao bun, miso black cod, tako, and sashimi (otoro, chutoro, king salmon)! Madai uzusukuri - the sauce was perfection and the dish was topped with some crunch, which made it delightful. The pork belly bao bun was fairly fatty (which I loved) and slightly salty. Tako was perfectly grilled, meaty with a tangy and mildly spicy sauce. And our favorite, miso black cod! Loved that it comes with soshito peppers. I'm biased because I love miso black cod, but this did not disappoint. Wonderful taste and great texture. Will need to come again to try their omakase.

Yelp
The hand rolls here are really quite delicious. The flavors are fabulous. The Leche de Tigre is one of my favorites - fish, avocado, cilantro. All of their fish is great. And their pork belly buns were some of the best I've had in a long time. The problem is that this place is so expensive. It makes it challenging to enjoy the food. Each hand roll is about two bites and they cost $15 each. You need at least five of them to make a meal, so they quickly add up. One night we went early, at 5 o'clock, when they have happy hour. It is half off on some of their rolls. A lot of items that they have on that happy hour menu are half priced but the waitress explained there are half the amount you get off the full menu. So basically instead of getting a discount, you're just getting smaller portions. If you haven't tried this place, and you're OK with the prices, I would definitely check it out. But I will probably not go again. It's just way too expensive, and I've had other great hand rolls in the area for less.

Yelp
My partner and I came back to try their NYE Tasting Menu yesterday evening and added several a la carte to our dinner. The food was decent, my favorites tonight were the Island Creek Oysters, Chu Toro Nigiri and Hirame Usuzukuri. The Hirame Usuzukuri (Japanese Sea Bream Sashimi) - My goodness, the slight citrus from the yuzu dashi, the fragrance from the chive oil, the hint of lemon mixed with shiso and the crunch from the candied quinoa.. complimented each other so incredibly well. It was so good I saved that sauce as my palette cleanser for the rest of the tasting. As for the rest of the dishes, they were a bit disappointing and underwhelming. In addition, we felt like they could have done better with the timing of serving each dish. Before we could finish one course, they brought out another. Mind you, the tables aren't very big and with the sake decanter, we had even less space. So I decided to let our server know to bring out a course at a time in which they did, but they were now too slow. Although most of the food we had tried previously wasn't consistent to the last time we were here, I felt the service made up for it. When we reached the end of our meal, our server let us know they were all out of the dessert on the tasting menu and brought us the orange parfait (pictured). I personally didn't like it and was disappointed because I love panna cotta and was excited to end the meal on a good note. I voiced my concerns to our server, Jose and the manager, Brad came over and made sure to make things right. He really went above and beyond and was able to bring me out a little bit of the panna cotta. He made our night and this is exactly the kind of exceptional service we look for and Brad deserves a raise & praise! I mean, he was just such a sweetheart. Thank you Brad for letting your customers feel seen and heard

Yelp
Guys. I'm all for some higher tier sushi, but this isn't rodeo drive. There is no excuse for there to be nothing one thing menu that's filling, it shouldn't require me to spend $150-300 bucks not to go home hungry. Stopped in after getting out of work, spent $50 bucks and realized very quickly that i will have to go to yet another restaurant if i want to get a full dinner without feeling like there was no way for me to fill up without spending like 200 bucks. Sure. Everything was great, food, service actually had a lot of miscommunication, but they were trying to create an upscale atmosphere, but I can go to Fuji and leave full, and still feel like I had well above average sushi without feeling ripped off. Sorry. This is some Beverly Hills type ostentatious food snobbery. I was pretty turned off. You guys gotta find balance, and way to appeal to a wider crowd by having something for everyone.

Yelp
Finally high quality omasake outside of Boston and Cambridge. This spot pumps out high quality dishes. The fish is high quality and fresh , with a perfect balance of traditional and some fusion elements. The vibe is trendy, elevated, but also not at all stuffy. They were blasting Outkast, ODB, and some classic hip-hop tunes. This is a place you wanna hang, unwind, and eat some high quality food . I did the omakase, which is only on Tuesday and Wednesday and only seats 6 people. Chef Kegan talked to us throughout the entire meal where he talked about his love for food, about all the dishes, and just talking about whatever. Def a great dude! I highly suggest everyone to check this place out, especially for the omasake. 5/5!

Peter C.

Yelp
Xoxo Sushi Bar is brand new on route 9 in Chestnut Hill. The inside is modern and elegant, with bar seating and limited tables. That means you should get yourself a reservation now! I predict this fusion spot is going to be very busy once fully open this week. They have music playing throughout, which gives a very trendy city feel to it. The lighting is subdued which adds even more to the vibe. This is your ideal date place in the area for incredible cocktails and food. But heck, bring your friends too. Service was killer. Jose was my waiter and on point with every thing. He had the food coming out steadily and was always highlighting the chefs favorite dishes. Gold star to Jose for stellar service. The bar area looks cool. They had a full staff. Although I had table seating, I still ordered a signature cocktail. You are guaranteed to find a drink you will fall in love with. On to the main event... the food. The nigiri omakase option delivered fresh cuts of prime fish. So good. The chef nailed the rice flavor and ratio of rice to fish. These things are commonly missed at some places, so the chefs here know what they're doing. Grilled skirt steak on skewers was divine. Hokkaido scallops were sweet and succulent. I ate my way through the menu. Fried rock shrimp provided a bit of a kick and definitely filled me up before I could order some more handrolls. The handrolls I did get to were so perfect though. Loved the negi toro and the spicy tuna. If I didn't fill up on all the other food I would have ordered more. Definitely don't skip the handrolls. Jose talked me into dessert. I tried to refuse but the man has a way of persuading people to get this fruity, delicious concoction. To be honest, I don't even remember what it was, he was just saying so many words that sounded like dessert paradise and my mind drifted into bliss. What that was i don't know, but it was so good. This is an easy 5 stars. I hope my fellow Yelpers fall in love with it too. I highly recommend checking it out. The chef is clearly skilled and the food is prepared with passion. Tip. The parking lot is tiny but if you turn on to the street before or after the entrance, you can access free street parking behind it. That's your best bet since route 9 isn't great for street parking.

Yelp
If you are a sushi lover and looking for fresh and well prepared/ aged sushi in the area, this is the place you MUST try! This upscale fancy sushi place provides high quality fish and freshness that you rarely find in Boston area. I usually visit NYC often to get high quality sushi, but this place can definitely be the alternative one. The price is a bit closer to the high-end but as well as the quality. The taste of dishes are not too close to authentic but rather more creative and unique. This maybe more attractive to westernized tastes, but still not too far from it so it also satisfied me!

Chris T.

Yelp
I must say the ambience is cute for date night it's like being in a boat. The service i had no issues with our server, staff was courteous and super nice! Thank you for that. My issue was feeling like the food you paid for was extremely sub par. For the money I would go to my more well known sushi houses like oiishi. I remember the street corn and salmon dishes were good. The hand rolls was like a mini taco that didn't burst with much flavor. My biggest gripe was my toro sashimi had a hard cartilage of some sort throughout our entire portion which was super unpleasant to eat since that's usually my goto at any sushi house. Usually want it to melt in your mouth with each bite I didn't take pictures myself as i was sort of over the dinner halfway through. We went to eat elsewhere right after as it was unsatisfying and was still hungry. Rolled thru based on some tik toks i saw so was excited. Def has the ambiance and great location with parking. I'm sure they'll keep stepping it up.

Yelp
The food was incredible, the service was perfect, and the ambiance was great. Just watching the sushi chefs was worth the price of admission. It wasn't cheap but the overall experience was definitely worth it. Pictured: King Salmon, Grilled Octopus Skewer, Spicy Tuna Rice, Miso Scallop Hand Roll, and Unagi.

Yelp
Service 5/5 Food 4/5 Was very excited to try this new cute sushi spot. Has a great menu and a very intimate atmosphere perfect for date nights. Loved the ceramics. Service: Host is unwelcoming, should definitely not be the greeter as this was our first interaction. Thankfully, our server Trinh was great and informative about the menu. She was very friendly and gave very attentive service! Drinks: yummy + refreshing lychee martini. Solid Tokyo old fashioned. Apps: -hamachi aburi: the apple pairing was bright refreshing and citrusy. Loved it. -madai uzuzukuri: is light in flavor and fresh but could be colder. -live scallop: nice fruity lemony vinaigrette. My favorite dish of the night. -Miso soup is yummy with a depth of flavor, but not sure why it's $9 for a teacup. -Oyster: unenjoyable but they didn't have lychee in it. -pork belly bao bun: very soft bun, good ratio of meat, nice flavor. One was much more tender than the other. Husband Ordered twice. Second round was very tender and more flavorful. -tuna crispy rice: great texture, perfectly fried rice but the tuna mixture lacked flavor/freshness. -chicken karaage: Wished it had more crispy coating. Needs more flavor/togarashi. Asked for spicy mayo. -street corn: solid side dish and very enjoyable. Sushi: -Ora king salmon sashimi: low quality. Not sure why sashimi is sold in 6 pieces instead of 3 but the orange color was transferring onto the ice. Worst of the night. -11 piece nigiri chef selection: smaller pieces, could more rice and be softer, and thicker slices of fish. Fresh/Good but nothing flavor wise stood out to me. Did not like the dessert cake, but enjoyed the corn and hochija ice cream. Our bill for everything was $415 (before tip). We had a very enjoyable time but not sure food wise was worth $500.

Alexandra A.

Yelp
So the sushi we had was really good . It tasted fresh and was tasty . It's pricey but that's normal for the area unless you go to Whole Foods but that's a whole vibe . The vibe is friendly. The parking attendant could be friendlier but overall vibe is welcoming.

Yelp
Trying dinner before making a dine in reservation for their omakase! Well let's say I did NOT have a good first impression at all as I wanted the foods to be great and tried omakase based on all the positive reviews I'm reading. I had ordered about $300+ take-out in sushi and some hot items to sample the menu... picked up the foods as the order was done and the valet staff ran the order out to me (parking is very limited so if you go, be aware), and dinner was had as soon as I got to my destination, which is a 10 minute drive from the restaurant. The portion of the chirashi is quite small for what was charged ($60), but decent (not spectacular). The sashimi looked fresh and tasted fine. HOWEVER, I got food poisoning (scombroid fish poisoning) about 30 minutes of finishing the takeout dinner on Friday evening with severe dizziness, vertigo, mild/moderate nausea and diarrhea. I was down for 2 days and about 95% recovered today. I'd also sent this review to the restaurant's survey to let them know. I am now very skeptical to try the omakase, or make recommendations for this place, which is a shame.

Yelp
I have to say, XOXO Sushi Bar was a total let down overall. First impressions of this place was that the interior was cute and had had a nice ambiance. Our server was incredibly nice and somewhat helpful with deciding what to order. The menu consists of mostly overpriced tapas/appetizer dishes. We ordered two hand rolls to try: the crunch tuna and crab butter The seaweed was nicely salted, however, I must say the hand rolls are extremely overpriced for what they are. Our favorite we tried from here was the Japanese street corn which is basically the elote corn you can find at a Mexican restaurant, and the spicy tuna crispy rice. The sashimi dishes were just okay, and honestly pretty underwhelming for the price. The fish was fresh, tasted fresh, but is not worth the money listed on the menu. Normally when we order toro, we get the O-toro from other places, however, we decided to get the chu-toro here. When biting into the chu-toro sashimi, we noticed there was a film in each of the six pieces served to us. After analyzing the film, we realized that it was harmless and part of the fish so we did not make an issue out of it. This was the first time out of many restaurants we had experienced this fish film that is difficult in chew through. We figure that it is possible just from the way the chefs are cutting the fish; harmless but still made for an unpleasant experience. The king salmon with herb and tuna & truffle dishes were, to put in simple terms, mid. Lacked flavor and the fish tasted like nothing. Also, sashimi thinly sliced. I think that this restaurant has potential, but for now I only see this place as an overpriced sushi appetizer restaurant. This visit the bill came up to around $190. For this price, you would be better off going to Oishii's, Zuma's, O Ya's or honestly anywhere else to spend more but at least the meal would be worth your while at the other upscale sushi restaurants. We were not even full from this meal and went elsewhere to dine afterwards. I would avoid this place if you actually want to get full; I can see this being decent for possibly drinks/bar. Food-wise, it was the biggest waste of time and money.

Sarah O.

Yelp
Went here last night, and I can't think of anything that I didn't like. The ambiance is perfect for a maybe third date. It has a really cute interior. Drinks were good but the star of the show is definitely the dishes. What sticks out to me is the pork belly, the skirt steak, and the asparagus. My dining companion loved the king salmon sashimi. I loved the crab handroll. The empress gin cocktail was good and unsuspectingly strong. They have a gender neutral restroom at either end of the bar, and a parking lot with complimentary valet parking. This is definitely one of the more pricey dinners I've had so be aware of that, but I would say it's worth it.

Gabriela G.

Yelp
It's a nice place for sure. However I've had sushi tasting more fresh than that and it didn't cost me $200.

Aimee F.

Yelp
We had a really great time here! The atmosphere is trendy and quirky. The food was also very good! The skewers and hand rolls were our favorites. The asparagus and octopus were our favorites along with some of the unique hand rolls. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. The desserts are $28, which is the most I've ever seen, even at Michelin starred establishments, so I thought they would be large, but they were very small. They were definitely tasty, but not worth $28. Other things were also overpriced, like the toro which was almost $50 for five slices. It was good, but not exactly the type I'm used to - it seemed cured or something, so I was hoping the waitress would explain this to us. This is a small critique though - it was a great time and overall great food!

Natalia S.

Yelp
This is a great place! The menu is a testament to freshness and creativity. They have a nice selection of fresh fish and whether you're enjoying selections from the raw bar or the kitchen, you're in for a treat. Some of my favorites include Spicy crunchy Tuna temaki, the Bloody Tuna from the cold selection, the eggplant and wagyu carpaccio . Excellence in all aspects!

Amanda I.

Yelp
Fantastic gimme 14 of em right now. I recommend the spicy tuna crispy rice and the salmon and pineapple dish. STRAIGHT BANGERS. Super well balanced, sweet/spicy/umami, and the texture of each dish was superb. Will come back again to try more. The vibe is pretty chill, nice mood lighting, and the restaurant is aesthetically appealing. My waitress was super accommodating and kind. This place is a new favorite for sure!

Monica R.

Yelp
we made a reservation at the last slot of the evening but when we arrived we were treated as if the shift had been over. Our order did go through but the server seemed rushed to serve us although we did have 30 mins to place the order and once she placed the food on the table simply disappeared although there was an extra hour left till closing. music was turned off and the restaurant was basically trying to close before closing time. the bar tender was left to finish our service. it was uncomfortable and felt rude. also most plates were quite disappointing. the only cool thing was the restaurant itself. music is simply too loud to have a conversation and we had two tables at they point of the night but it was so loud still that we couldn't hear each other. a very unwelcoming experience.

Itay S.

Yelp
Great decor and atmosphere. Very good service. We were 3 people and tried 7-8 different dishes, all very good and some served in an innovative different way, very impressive. I would highly recommend the place and planning to go back soon.

Shulamit S.

Yelp
I went in with great expectations. I'm not convinced this new trendy restaurant is an invincible winner. The service and attention from staff gets an A. They were way overstaffed for a Thursday night but the restaurant was 1/2 full. Decor and ambiance very nice. No ghosts of Starbucks or Peet's left behind. The food we ordered was expensive. Even more so than a past favorite, Oishi. Japanese food done right comes with a cost. We are still a chestnut hill crowd. We will spend the money, but it definitely has to be worth it and we are unforgiving of tiny portions and drinks served in small glasses. The spicy tuna w/truffle looked nice but tasted mushy. Crispy rice w eel was disappointing. Not much crispy rice ... which is my favorite part. Where was the ponzu sauce? The skirt steak: Undercooked. Nothing special Not worth the price. The "Crab Butter" was confusing (we didn't know that the little blob on the plate was the butter) and the crab tasted canned or frozen. The rock shrimp was very good and well done. A++ I will be back when I have money to burn in my pocket. Next time we will sit at the sushi bar and stick to just sushi and sashimi.. and saki. The mixed drinks (we got something w lychee and the other had grapefruit) definitely need some fine tuning from the bartender.

Roman O.

Yelp
It was a great experience! The food was delicious and fresh. It was a great date night. Happy this place opened near us!

John B.

Yelp
I feel bad writing this review because we really wanted to like this place. Here's what we ordered: Wagu Tartar It had a weird white coloring and the meat really didn't have a lot of taste. O-Toro Ora King Salmon Sashimi This was the belly and as my wife put it "tasted like the bottom of the ocean." It was a grayish color and was just not good. Salmon Sashimi This was the highlight of the dishes and had great taste and consistency Spicy Crab Maki Served warm and tasted a bit fishy Lemon miso toro - nagiri Servers warm and had a Smokey taste but it did melt in your mouth. Asparagus Way over cooked and just not good. The waitress and manager were extremely helpful and they didn't charge us for the dishes we didn't like which I give them a lot of credit for. Unfortunately we won't be coming back.

Lise C.

Yelp
We greatly enjoyed our time at XOXO! This is an upscale spot so expect the prices to be aligned to that experience! Though we found the edamame to be quite a tasty bargain! Our absolute favorite item on the menu was the negi toro hand roll! The vibe of the restaurant is very fun! Almost made us believe we were down in Miami! Our waitress was wonderful too! Wish we remembered her name. We will certainly be back!

kelly r.

Yelp
Expensive and the portions are tiny ! Expensive and not that impressive Expensive and they charged for presentation not quality Not coming back

Alder P.

Yelp
I enjoyed xoxo! They have complimentary valet. The ambience was really cool! Nice lighting and decent music, a mix of top 40s with Alternative rap/r&b (which I loved). Really cool vibe overall. I enjoyed the chicken karage, unagi, black cod, and o-toro The lychee Martinis were splendid. Can't wait to return for a drink. Great service and vibes! My only feedback is that we were seated at the bar/ sushi counter. I prefer when I make reservations and it gives you the options for your seating, as I typically prefer booths/back support.

Richard T.

Yelp
Rats were all around the dumpster next to the restaurant. That was literally enough to stop me from going in. If they allow such a visible health hazard for all to see, what are they hiding where we can't see? Are the rats in the restaurant too. Put in an emergency call to the Pies Piper of Hamlin!

Avery D.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious and ambiance is great. Must try when in Boston!! Fun and lively!

Nhi N.

Yelp
Xoxo sushi bar was an interesting but disapointing experience. High hopes brought by beautifully crafted interior, hopes are high. As you step on a saturday night at 9 pm the atmosphere was dead and unexciting. The food is the combination of overpriced unbalence dishes that are poorly executed. High tones of acidity, that would lead to other dishes being overpower by the previous ones. Saw multiple dishes going back to the kitchen not finished being dumped on the way on a trash can near the bar, a good chef would want to know why its guests are not finishing their one bite dishes costing 15-50 dolars each. This review is not coming with a negative intent, just some times experiments go too far and looses the mark, and if no one is telling you anything just not coming back to your stablishment, a restaurant would not acomplish the number one rule of the restaurant industry, reepiting customers. Thank you for the food Good luck

David S.

Yelp
Beautiful new restaurant right in Chestnut Hill, with the best sushi I've had in a while. Great ambiance, beautifully renovated space. Service is excellent, and you can sit at the bar. Food is served very quickly, and the manager is awesome, caring about his customers.

Brian S.

Yelp
Expensive and nothing special. Pork Belly was good, sushi was average, luckily the drinks hit right but not worth the price. Ambiance is great!

Hector E.

Yelp
Service was great, the ambience was nice too. From 1 to 10, I will give it an 8. Unfortunately, the food is not according to the price. The sushi wasn't any good and for a dinner (2 people), without drinks, I ended up paying almost $300.

Dm L.

Yelp
Looked forward to trying XOXO based on a Boston Magazine article, only to be let down at the quality of food and sub par service. Waited an hour for main meal and had to call over a manager - was told that the sushi order never got placed, although we had received drinks and apps. Food was also mediocre, at best, particularly for the price. Wagyu strip from NEW JERSEY?!? Served with dollops of black bean paste straight out of the jar. Blech. Almost forgot that the valet didn't return my car key and had to turn around to retrieve it. INCONVENIENT, especially making U-turns on Wooster.

Yelp
Way overpriced for the value.. The service was very good and the ambience cozy and fairly upscale. But the food was average at best in terms of freshness and flavor. We tried the various tuna options for sushi, ok not great and the cuts were slightly on the smaller side compared to the many sushi restaurants we've been to. The Unagi was just strange.. it was fairly hard and dried out and prepared in such a way that we could barely recognize it as a piece of sushi. In short, it wasn't good. I forget the name of the warm dish we tried, I believe crispy spicy tuna - it was bland and a bit "chewy." Side dishes like miso soup and edamame were very good, at least. I see lots of fancy articles about the opening of this place -- great marketing, I guess. But we're simple diners, interested in good quality food and good value - all in all, we would pay no more than half the price of this food, even considering the crazy inflation of recent years.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday evening. There's valet and off street parking. The ambiance was great, dim lighting, lively upbeat music. Service was quick yet attentive. The Hot Date drink was delicious, almost like a spicy marg. The food was mediocre. I can't say there was anything to rave about. I think the prices catered to the neighborhood as many of the menu items were significantly overpriced. I'm glad we gave it a try but I'm not sure I'd say I'd come back.

Yelp
Cool dim atmosphere, fish was tasty. My favorite was uni and yellowtail. The handrolls were fresh as well (miso scallop and snow crab were both great). Grilled octopus was soft. However the pink lantern dessert was mediocre since it was a strange combo of sweet and salty herbs with ice cream. I would come back though to try other items!

Yelp
A very cute space. There is bar seating where you can watch the chef and regular tables. The food was amazing and the sashimi was very fresh and good quality. They also had lots of good cocktail options.

Yelp
When arriving to the place, they offer valet parking, which is pretty nice. However, I parked the first spot next to the restaurant which has a tree branch next to the curb, so I literally had to squeeze out of my way from my car, and making sure I didn't kill the tree. That was poor a landscaping choice. As you first walk in the ambience is well put, the dimness of it makes it a great nighttime experience, but sometimes it can be too dark to see anything but I think that's kind of the point. It gives off a Contemporary vibe for social media. The seatings near the windows are so close to each other that I could barely get into my seat across from my friend so I had to sit next to her because I didn't want to bother the people behind, so maybe try to space out better? For the price point and food I think it was a bit underwhelming. For one you're not gonna be expected a sized portions, it's pork one serving if not a half. I ordered the hand roll miso scallop, which I felt like they added too much chili pepper flakes making it, overpowering the entire thing. The tuna and truffle, was underwhelming, wasn't a huge fan of the plating, and it was okay taste. I think the flavor could do some more work in both dishes. The edamame and corn were pretty solid for bites at the bar! Don't get me wrong, the sushi there is fresh, but it doesn't quite meet up the expectation I had anticipated. You're expected to spend quite an amount, but not fully ever get full off of it. I would definitely recommend for the atmosphere but food is just something that I wouldn't gravitate towards.

Yelp
Might be the best kept secret in Chestnut Hill? Vibes were impeccable and food was fantastic. We can't wait to go back!

Yelp
My friend and I do a monthly sushi night. We usually have 20 pieces of Nigiri a person. We were lucky enough to be sat at the bar next to chef Kegan. We ordered our first 10 pieces and then Chef Kegan suggested our next 10 and changed an elevated the entire experience. I would highly recommend XOXO to any friend or family member looking for a very elevated and incredible experience. I will absolutely be going back as soon as they have the Omakase experience soon.

Yelp
Mixed Feelings: Food: Decent flavors but small portions for the price. Ambiance: Pleasant atmosphere with nice décor. Service: Friendly and attentive waiter. Price: Overpriced for the portion sizes also Sake was overpriced for glass and bottles. In summary, while XOXO sushi Bar has its charms with a nice ambiance and friendly service, the high prices and small portion sizes may leave diners feeling unsatisfied.

Yelp
Head chef Kegan, chef Pedro and chef Ben? served a fantastic omakase style dinner. Their expertise in the food they serve was apparent. We were fortunate enough to be seated directly in front of Kegan, who as we sat down was preparing the signature 9 fish (18 piece) sashimi platter for the table behind us. We ordered the 5 fish platter with many other smaller plates. We will definitely be returning soon!

Yelp
Very good sushi. A bit too pricey compared to other local places (i.e., sushico). Service was meh. They brought us the wrong glass of wine, served salmon to one of the diners (when the diner said had he was allergic to salmon) and were a bit chintzsy with the ginger and soy sauce (both of which were not served with the sushi and had to be requested). I'm willing to chalk the poor service up to a bad server. But still good sushi, and fresh.

Yelp
XOXO Sushi Bar is a joke. I was trying to find a better way to phrase it, but there's no other word. A feeble, sad attempt to serve Japanese food. I wanted to like this place and had high hopes so I do feel a little torn about writing this review. The sushi chef is not a real chef and his assistant is just as clueless. The two guys are both a little confused, not quite sure how to properly make sushi using fresh fish and ingredients. Perhaps they should go back to making sandwiches or grilling. The restaurant needs legitimate sushi chefs if they're going to charge the prices they do. Food was bland, lacking on all dimensions and overpriced. The waitstaff is decent and that's the only good thing I can say. Save your money and go elsewhere.
