"Over the years, you’ve probably heard some great dating stories. You’ve no doubt been told of ridiculous, hilarious encounters (humans are weird) and maybe you’ve even been privy to some epic tales of true love found. But you never hear much about those ‘meh’ dates. You know the ones: someone swipes right on an objectively very good-looking person, who also happens to be his or her type on paper. They meet. They have a pleasant enough time. But there was no spark, so they never see each other again. The end. That’s how we feel about Xu. It’s a nice enough place, but there’s no spark. On paper, Xu has all the things we look for in a restaurant: good pedigree (it’s from the guys who own Bao), a really nice space, a great location in Soho, and a menu with a new twist on Taiwanese cuisine. The main problem with Xu is that the actual restaurant is more impressive than the food. The space is inspired by the films of Wes Anderson (so the restaurant tells us), and there are cool little details throughout - like a table made specifically for solo diners, and drawers underneath your seat to stow your bag. We prefer the upstairs to the downstairs Tea Room area, which has a bar awkwardly placed in the middle of the room, but both are very attractive places to eat. photo credit: Carol Sachs When it comes to the food, the menu has words that we’re very into on paper: there’s stuff like ‘mini spring onion pancake with foie gras’, ‘chicken wing with caviar’, and ‘short rib and bone marrow’. But what happens when we actually eat those things? Nothing much, really. At best the dishes are reasonably good, like the bone marrow and tofu, and at worst, somewhat tasteless - avoid the crab. Overall, there’s no star dish that will leave you overcome with emotion and wanting more. It means you end up with a menu that gets pretty dull pretty quickly, giving you fewer and fewer reasons to go back. So that’s it. Another not-quite love story that won’t go down in history. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re just going to step next door to The Palomar. It’s not cheating. We have a real spark there. Food Rundown Gold Coin 1pc This is a mini spring onion pancake with foie gras. Mini by name. Mini by impact. Chicken Wing A single deep fried chicken wing with caviar on top. It’s nice, but not as satisfying as the three KFC hot wings you could have at the same price. Beef Pancake This is a twist on roast duck and pancakes, where the beef is cooked in bone marrow. You scoop it out onto the pancakes with garnish. You eat it. And then you move on with your life. Tomato and Smoked Eel Fresh and spicy. Get it if you like eel. Don’t get it if you don’t like eel. Cast Iron Black Pepper Beef An OK beef dish, with a fried egg added for show. Except there isn’t much of a show to start with. Chilli Egg Drop Crab Unfortunately, neither the chilli nor the egg nor the crab are able to inject much flavour into this dish. Skip it. Xu’s Mapo Tofu If you’ve never had mapo tofu, we’d suggest giving it a try at Xu. If you have, you’ll feel like you’ve had a better version of this dish elsewhere." - Eileen Twum

Had dinner in two on a Saturday night, without reservation. We arrived a bit early (6pm) and got a table almost immediately. Extremely good and well trained staff, differently from many restaurants in London they fully deserve the service charge. When it comes to the food, the quality is very good (miles ahead any other restaurant in the area) although rather pricey. In two we had three small dishes and a main (the chicken, which was recommended) and a dessert. For 30£ per person, it was absolutely worth it. The best part of the restaurant is the atmosphere. They try to recreate a cozy vintage decoration and they are quite effective at that. Great for a date or for a special occasion, probably not a place for a casual dinner with friends.

We had a mishap with our table booking but the staff were very attentive and managed to sort everything out. The service at XU is excellent. You can tell the staff work really hard. The selection of jerky was my favourite dish, as was the sweetbreads. Food was good but nothing really stood out to me as "WOW". They ace the drinks side of things - great cocktails and drinks menu, we shared a really good sake while others tried the cocktails. Cool little spot for drinks. Love the glassware.

The food was delicious and interesting, spicey but just right for me anyway. The service was a little slow but similar to the decor excellent in quality. Their tea history is fascinating but the whole experience was a bit overpriced for the portion size, even for London. They have a bizarre no straws policy and the front door requires superhuman strength to open. Good as a one-off if, like us, you want to try Taiwanese food for the first time.

Very romantic and exquisite. They are very authentic from food to interior design - so it might make you feel that you are in the opposite side of the globe. My partner and I haven’t made a reservation, so had to wait. But the wait was not at all painful, as they have small bar upstairs which offers really good selection of cocktails. Overall, it was really awesome journey. Loved it very much.

Absolutely excellent. The quality and refinedness of the food is impeccable. The menu is not super large and thats what i love about it.the numbing beef tendons, The pork dumplings, the Bak Kwa, the drop chili crab are all excellent dishes. The decor is cosy and intimate with that old time tea parlor feel of the 1920s. The tea infused cocktails are also super interesting. Definitely one of my favorite spots in London.

Group of 4 tried our luck and got lucky on a walk in at 8pm, double win as we got a semi private room at the back that was a real treat. Food was great, menu a little confusing but once the friendly som filled us in we where happy. We should of ordered more than we did, all the dishes came at the same time and very fantastic. Great selection of wine. Look forward to going. Back.

A lovely decor, it makes you feel like you are in a scene of The Last Emperor. Lovely food and ambience. The service was super good and despite the broken English of the young lady serving us, she was so helpful and nice. 6 stars! Price ok in the end, as we had a lot of food, not cheap though! Will definetely come back and try the upstairs dining room and bar next time around.

One of my favourite places in London right now. Great value, great service. The ma po tofu is a game changer. Also the XU reisling is an excellent wine. The staff are super knowledgeable and will help you through the menu easily. The lunch rice bowls are especially good value and the £39 set menu will leave you stuffed.
