Meet Adam Schmidt, the Guy Who Ate at Every Restaurant in Philly’s Chinatown | Eater Philly

"I loved Xun Yu Si Kao — the fish pot dish is just incredible, and in fact every dish I had there was outstanding; their menu is a book of beautiful food photography, so even if you aren’t familiar with a dish you can see what everything looks like, which makes lesser-known items more approachable." - Ernest Owens

Where to Eat in Sunset Park’s Chinatown | Eater NY

"The decadence of seafood and Sichuan cuisine meet at Xun Yu Si Kao, where shareable trays of fish (called “fish pots”) like striped bass and grouper come marinating in a deep red sauce. Get any of the seven fish pots ranging from tilapia to buffalo, and order depending on the budget and group size. If reeling from the spice, eat the complimentary dessert that’s usually cold enough to temper down taste buds." - Pelin Keskin

Had a very nice dinner here. Very efficient restaurant. We were greeted as soon as we came through the door and seated just as quickly. Our orders came out quickly, and the attentive wait staff kept our water containers filled and our questions answered during our dinner. Very good plate size to share with friends. Everything was tasty and spicy, but it was way too salty for my taste. There were some bites I took where it tasted like a spoonful of salt. The skewers were good! Favorites were the mini hot dogs and the lamb.

Second time here and it didn’t disappoint!!! We got the bass fish with garlic flavor medium spice level. For add on to the fish we had the tofu, beef and noodles. It was so worth the extra add on. For the BBQ we got , the squid, the garlic oyster, the beef and the lamb. It was all cool too perfection. It was so so so so yummy. I enjoyed it a lot. It wasn’t busy and food came out quickly. Best of all, the fish wasn’t too salty. I’ll come again

You get to pick the fish, the level of spice, and the flavor. With a additional charge, you choose any ingredients to put inside!

I’ve been coming to dine in this restaurant ever since it has opened. It’s one of the most authentic Sichuan cuisine in NYC. While every dish being very delicious, the frog fish I had stood out to me. It was fresh and very similar to the one I had in China. Apart from the food, the service is also extremely good. The staff were quick to assist my needs and very polite during my dining. Definitely recommended !

Google
Pretty spicy food, but if you aren't used to heat you may want to tone it down. I like the fish and lamb the most, really nice spice blend used to give a really rich and complex flavor. It's not spicy for the sake of being spicy which I appreciate, so there is flavor beyond the heat. Atmosphere is nice and so are the staff, no complaints from me.

Wanted to try this place for a while. But they open at 1PM. This place is good. Everything was very tasty. This place is very nicely decorated. But the seats were all worn out and cut up. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Can't believe it took me this long to eat here, but I'm in loveee. We didn't get the grilled fish, but based on the entrees and skewers, I'll be back again if they keep it the same quality. We especially loved all the skewers, they had a good spice, charred really well, and was pretty juicy and fresh. For the spicy dishes such as the spicy crab, chongqing chicken, they were surprisingly not too spicy and very tolerable despite not asking for any adjustments. Highly recommend these two if you want a good quick that's also not too salty. Enjoyed the fried rice even though it was a little wet, the eggplant was also delicious. The only thing I didn't enjoy as much was the pickled veggies with fatty beef - while not too sour like other places, I thought it was on the bland side and not very memorable considering we had a whole table full of other delicious food.

Yelp
LOVE this place in Sunset Park on 7th Ave. they are really sweet and take care of you everything. You should definitely ask the right amount food for a table but everything is great and affordable prices. Taste can be very spicy. A main dish of hot fish was great! Make sure you get with some adds with. We love to eat with some veggies as healthy as we could be. I am Japanese and medium spicy was pretty spicy. But we got some fried Seafood Udon Noodles for kid and it's very flavorful and trustworthy. Also ChongQing Spicy Chicken was amazing savory, crunchy with all the spices. It's always crowded so you can trust!

Yelp
My favorite grilled fish place in BK!! It's pretty spacious inside so good for big parties. I went with my family (5 people) and ordered the sauerkraut bass with lotus roots, bean sprouts, yam and enoki mushrooms, some bbq items like grilled squids, lamb skewers, beef skewer, grilled eggplant and appetizers: tripe and chicken feet. Everything was absolutely delicious! My favorite was the sauerkraut fish, the fish was crispy on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. My fiancé highly recommends the tripe. The skewers were well cooked and juicy; nothing was over cooked. We all left very satisfied and full. We already planned to go back in the near future for their other items!

Yelp
Being there multiple times and definitely the best Sichuan food in BK (yes I'm from Sichuan). Also the owner and all staff have been super nice each time, accommodating multiple requests for dine-in or pickups. If you love spicy food def pay a visit!

Yelp
I'm not a fish fan but overall it was a pretty good experience for me. So if you are not intending to eat fresh grilled fish then this might not the place for you! Xun Yu Si Kao is not a typical Chinese restaurant, their specialty is "Yu" = Fish. They do have other spicy entrees and cold dishes. The fun part is you customize the fish based on your liking - the type of fish, the level of spiciness, flavoring, the add ons ($3-6/add on). I usually do not eat fresh fish because I can't stand when it has a too fishy taste, it makes me feel nauseous. We asked recommendation for which fish would have less of fishy taste and we were recommended the bass. I was able to eat a few piece of it and enjoyed it. I was mainly eating the add ons. Their hand made noodles was pretty good. I think the add on was good combination but it wasn't a big portions. Most of my group don't have high spice tolerance, we got mildly spicy this time but next time we come back we planning to go for the level up.

Yelp
Food is good and delicious, but service so terrible Not happy with my dinner, never come back

Yelp
Delicious. Appealing. Friendly service. This is what made the place pretty good in my opinion but the pricing was a bit steep. Hence the -1 star. We went as a family dinner so the waiters and waitresses had to put up with 7 kids and 8 adults, which they did fairly well in as well as setting up our tables for us. Some of the waitresses even offered to watch the kids while we ate! The grilled fishes that come in a big pan while still cooking is really great. The sour cabbage fish was my favorite. Their beef tripe and beef was so delicious we had to order two plates. A lot of the spiciness you can customize and adjust but they also sell some non spicy items for the kids to eat as well. The pork belly slices with cucumber were nothing to be in awe about, the sauce didn't have much flavor when you dipped the slices in. Will I be back? Yes. Only if I have $$$ or if someone is treating.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for dinner tonight and none of the covid precautions were done. We didn't have to leave a phone number to be traced if potential customers got covid. We didn't have our temperature taken. The food on the other hand was delicious. We had the Beef Tripe, surf clam, and a pot of the spicy fish. All the dish we ordered were very flavorful.

Yelp
This place is my favorite grilled fish place, I like it even better than hot space! The grilled whole fish is reasonably priced, especially considering how much topping they add on for you. I feel like one order of toppings here is equivalent to two orders in most grilled fish places. I especially love the lotus roots, duck blood, and the tofu. We also got the dry pot intestine dish which was mind-blowingly good. During the pandemic we tried this place a few times for delivery which was really good already but eating in the restaurant is 100x better. If you like whole grilled fish, give this place a try!

Yelp
They'll put your coats and jackets into a big recycling bag so they don't smell, so I guess that's a thing. Their menu is unnecessarily confusing. Parts of it have English translations, and others don't. The "BBQ" section is really just skewers similar to what you can get at the carts on 8th ave. Of course, we had to get a whole fish. Did the striped bass in garlic sauce. It's a whole fish, but not the biggest fish. But if you throw in some noodles as an add-on, you can make a decent meal out of it. Most of the add-ons are $2 each, which *adds* up. The glass noodles were fine. The tripe was a ripoff (barely any in there). Also had the Chongqing spicy chicken, which was on the mild side of mouth-numbing. But too many small bones in the chicken. Made it annoying to eat. The space is alright. Not too packed, and the walls have some of the weirdest shit on it. Some broken English motivational slogans, and some communist propaganda...

Yelp
Authentic chongqing dishes, very spicy, highly recommended for those who love Sichuan flavor! They even provide free dessert in the end.

Yelp
Pretty authentic Chinese grill fish. I would recommend pickled pepper flavor. Cold noodles are spicy and very thin, consisting of noodles marinated in spicy sauce with some cucumbers and peanut cuts. The owner gave us free jelly as a gift, tastes good.

Yelp
The food was okay. I have to say the best thing about it was the side dishes we ordered and not mainly the fish. The fish wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Very plain and something I can just make at home myself. The pork cucumber was the plainest thing I ever had. No flavor is the sauce what so ever, basically like putting a bunch of oils and fats in my mouth. We also ordered the frog and that tasted too much like the peppercorn, very unpleasant. The people I came with wanted to order more, so we did. My stomach started to hurt after we finished the fish. I didn't want to eat anything after that. Only 3 stars because of the staff, otherwise I would give it a 1/2.

Yelp
There's been a lot of these restaurants opening up around the Brooklyn Chinatown area. They are known for their flat "hotpots" where they have fish as the main protein and you can add other veggies or meat into the flat pot. You eat the meal with a group and its served with either rice or the noodles you choose to add into the flat pot. The region of this food is from Chong Qin China. My family ordered various food items during our dinner here and every dish did not disappoint. The only gripe one might have is if they cannot eat spicy because every item on this menu is a little spicy, even the most mild was spicy. It's an interesting concept of food that I've never had before and I'm chinese. I feel if you like the regular hotpot, you might like this style of cuisine as well. The flavors are really one of a kind and out of this world.

Helen H.

Yelp
Came with 3 people. Delicious food and attentive service. A good portion of food for the price. The waitstaff was super nice and friendly. We ordered the seafood hotpot, the beef and tripe with chili sauce and the pickled veggie with meat fried rice. We ordered their carrot apple juice which was refreshing. Everything had good flavor and was delicious. They serve herbal jelly at the end. I would come again to try the fish dishes which they are more known for

Yelp
It is in Brooklyn China town, a place more like China and quite different from Manhattan. There are many restaurant for Chinese Food. The way fish cooked there is similar to fish restaurant in China. Since coming US, I haven't found a place cooking that way but here I found it. There are many flavors you can choose for your fish, and both my friend and I like this restaurant though a bit far from my home

Yelp
The staff was so nice and made room for our big group! The dishes were really nice and we were given a complementary dessert afterwards. Will come back again next time

Yelp
First time coming here !!! The ambiance is casual it's a nice place to come with friends or family !!! But I still don't know how the food taste !!! Will give another review in a little while !!! But one thing I don't like that it's to noise !!!

Chloé P.

Yelp
I did not even get to try the food. I walked in and asked for a table for 2. I was told "Look at the menu, we don't serve American Chinese food here." I said that's fine, can we be seated and again I was referred to the menu again and was not shown to a seat. I was made to be so uncomfortable I left.

It's mainly a fish restaurant. I should say one of the best fish I've had in my life.

Yelp
Amazing food and amazing staff! They have levels of spiciness you can choose from; all very good. Their fruit juices are super fresh and yummy!

Janelle P.

Yelp
I never ate here but I live right here , this establishment needs to lower the noise down !!!!!! You guys make a lot of noise even after 12am I can't believe these waiters allow their customers to get really drunk and yell all night long . If this continues , I will make a noise complaint .

Amy W.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate birthday with family! Due to some of my family can't handle spicy food we asked the dishes to be without spices. The restaurant was very accommodating and the food came out really tasty. The food portions are decent, we shared the fish dishes plus some appetizers and noodle dishes. The watermelon juice was really refreshing! The store was doing some promotion and we got to play the wheel game and got a dish for free!! We are planning to go back for other celebrations in the near future. another nice restaurant in Brooklyn.

Yevgeniy M.

Yelp
Awesome place. This is our second time here and the fish is great. Get cumin pig feet and surf clams. Amazing!

Jun L.

Yelp
Ate here two times, the fish is delicious and both times I went the restaurant wasn't crowded. Maybe because I went at odd hours. Service was good too. Only complaint is that the grill fish have strong fragrance, wish they offer plastic bags to hold any clothing articles like jackets so it won't smell of grill fish after. But it's delicious, nice place, nice service.

Andy Z.

Yelp
This is my first time to here eat food. Because i and my friend we like to eat spicy food.My friend want to try this restaurant.First time we order the Chongqing grilled fish,so we just ordered a littlespicy.but the waiter telled us the grilled fish only have mid spicy.okay ,at last we agree try it and we order other different food. When the grilled fish coming up.It is look like very good,we are so happy. But the food very very very spicy,we just eat a little.we feel such a waste, but we don't have a good idea. It's very spicy we don't eat it.The next day,my friend tell me her face have a acne.lol.I think if the food cook a little spicy,it's prefect.

Alan F.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING! Very different and unique experience. We tried 10 different items and all were great. Will be coming back
