"Opening: May At the 12-seat Yamada in Chinatown, the namesake chef will be serving a 10-course $300 kaiseki menu with a seasonal focus and a few European touches. The Japanese tasting will cycle through various cooking techniques—frying, grilling, steaming, simmering—and end with a tea ceremony. Just a few feet away, you'll find another spot from the same restaurant group, Kono." - bryan kim

I saw Jessica Chastain on the uptown 3 train on November 9, 2024. She was in possession of this grocery store's tote bag, so I had to visit at some point! I only got this black coffee in a bottle because I'd just had lunch, & I didn't want a beer. This beverage energized me through a couple of hours of outdoor work!

Google
Great selection of Japanese items. We even found Pretz flavors we never saw in Japan. There is more than just food available. A variety of toiletries, kitchen utensils, and cookware is also for sale. It's really worth your time if you're missing something or other from your time in Japan. Highly recommended!

Google
Adorable! A well-stocked Japanese grocery store and more! I went in for food but came out with a nice selection of housewares and stationery, too. I was so happy to find yuzu mochi and my favorite Japanese chocolates. The staff members were super nice, too.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would have. The staff is extremely friendly and quick with helping me out. There's a huge selection of food, snacks but also cosmetics and household products. Basically, Yamadaya is a Japanese supermarket in the middle of NYC. I think 90% of the things in my house comes from this place. I just love how high-quality the products that I bought here are and that's why I go every week. They also take good care of the store. All of the products are nicely displayed on the shelves. It really shows how much they care. Best Japanese store in the city. Highly recommended!

Google
On my recent visit to NYC, I was so enchanted by this store that I went three times. I could have bought a lot of stuff, but I didn't really need anything. The prices were better than the mega Japanese store Mitsuwa or other Asian stores I frequent in Chicago. I ended up only buying a food-shaped eraser for my daughter and a few Mochis. The young woman working at the front counter was super nice. This shop is a wonderful addition to the West Village!

Google
Lovely place! They have my favorite drinks at the best prices! A lot of fun Japanese stuff. goods and snacks

Google
Excellent selection. They have snacks that aren’t at other Japanese stores and have a huge household product section. Makes me nostalgic of our trips to Japan. Prices are very reasonable as well

Google
This was my favorite Japanese market in the village but honestly their customer service has left me with questions unanswered more than once. Upon asking about their products, like teas, they often aren’t able to really provide information. On top of that they do not accept exchanges for items that taste spoiled. I’ve spent a lot of money there over the last few years and am really surprised they offer no satisfaction guarantee. Also I’ve always thought the wall of pictures of people who have shoplifted there is creepy and unnecessarily intimidating to people who shop there. There are many other Japanese markets in NYC, I’d start with any of the others first – I recommend Katagiri & Sunrise.

Yelp
Yamadaya is a fun store to shop at. Located on Sixth Avenue near Citarella and next door to the Empire Cake store, it's relatively easy to find. When I visited this week, it was fully stocked with all kinds of products and specialty items from Japan. If you can think of it, they probably have it. In the back of the store there's a section with cookware, plates and glasses - including the soup bowls with lids. I had to look up why they use lids - for heat retention and to release the aroma when you remove the lid. Some more highlights included : a nice selection of instant bubble tea boba kits, hello kitty beauty items, frozen dumplings, produce, ramen noodles, hair clips and supplies and even beer/ alcohol. The store is well organized, most items were easy to find; the prices were typical for Manhattan. Very convenient and clean. Given the limited space, they got a lot packed into it. And even though it's a Japanese grocery, I don't expect everything to be made in Japan; some items are likely there for customer convenience.

Yelp
Excellent Japanese market. I never knew of this place (only know Sunrise and Mitsuwa) and had fun browsing their items. I had follow some colleagues after our dinner and we all browse to do some shopping. Large snack sections and really decent stuff. Altho, it was abit pricy for me, I was told it was standard pricing for the neighborhood and that japanese groceries are always about this expensive.

Michele D.

Yelp
This is the coolest shop for almost everything you can think of: Japanese snacks, condiments, drinks, kitchen utensils, bowls, makeup, skin care, stationary, incense, cleaning supplies, and more. It's like a Daiso on steroids. The staff are accommodating and the store is a fun place to shop for interesting stocking stuffers.

Jess L.

Yelp
Wow, true treasure trove. This store is the type you'd normally find in Chinatown or Koreatown. Amazingly stocked. Lots of super cute housewares and gifts. You want a cute animal on any type of houseware or gift, and you'll find it here. There are also a bunch of shelf and perishable snacks and drinks. I was surprised this store wasn't more busy! It is a little pricey, I suppose. But so fun!

MICHELE M.

Yelp
Great little shop with a random assortment of foods, snacks, home goods and makeup, even some stationary and bento boxes.

Aagdolla G.

Yelp
The store is awesome and have a lot of colorful Japanese snacks and other asian culture you can run into that's consist of frozen food too. I got soy bean milk strawberry flavor and it was ok, not sweet at all since it's not American made. I wouldn't buy this again but will try other things next time.

Yelp
Wow love this place! As a former Hawaii resident this place felt so familiar and homey. The staff were super helpful and prices were amazing. They have everything from food, to organizers, party and kid goods, tea sets and plates and of course matcha powder. Definitely recommend!

Audrey T.

Yelp
What a wonderful find! I stumbled upon this place when I was walking around the neighborhood. A few streets down from Dainobu and a true gem! Super spacious inside with everything you could think of and more! Very clean, well organized and just an overall pleasant experience walking around. They have a whole section dedicated to different beers, face masks, plethora of snacks, condiments, ramen, drinks, fresh/premade food, sushi, household items (cookware, utensils, tea/drink wares), cosmetics, cleaning products, detergents, room scents etc. the freezers are loaded with ice cream, mochi, frozen vegetables, meat, seafood, takoyaki, Okonomiyaki and more! I could spend hours and hours here just immerse myself in the galore of everything!

Chrissy T.

Yelp
They literally have everything and the sushi was decent!! Mochi is delicious! Would come to buy anything from kitchen items to beauty

Susan C.

Yelp
Love the addition of this store to the neighborhood and that it brings a different selection of Japanese groceries, snacks and home goods compared to Dainobu a couple blocks away. As many have mentioned there is a large variety of snacks and candy, as well as cooking sauces, condiments, kitchen ware and home goods, stationary, and knick knacks. They have a decent selection of dried foods and noodles and some takeaway food items but I'd say for produce and fresh/frozen food items Dainobu has a stronger selection. Yamadaya stands out in the amount of housewares, bathroom, skincare and beauty products they carry which are pretty extensive. I can see myself coming here to get some specialty Japanese brands not easily available in other smaller Japanese stores or Asian supermarkets. As other reviewers have mentioned--a spacious and very clean, comfortable shopping experience!

J J.

Yelp
Nice shop that has a bit of everything for a Japanese to enjoy, even for the little ones. Only thing is prices are steep, but if you're getting genuine Japanede items it's worth a once s while splurge. Just make sure you check where items were made. Some items I fancied were unfortunately made in China, which diminishes their real value.

Heather R.

Yelp
Excellent Japanese grocery I truly fell in love with this establishment. The variety of food ingredients was amazing from sauces, spices, Etc the soups, and fresh premade food excellent. The next I go to this store I will explore the Beauty products such as lotions and sponges.

Andrew D.

Yelp
Another Japanese grocery store to add to my list of regular shopping locations. It's a big space too. They have all the basics: Pocky, Kit Kats, soba noodles and Kewpie mayonnaise. Plus they have a good selection of drugstore cosmetics and housewares from Japan. It's conveniently located close to the West 4th street subway station on 6th Avenue. If you're in the area check it out. The aisles are definitely more comfortable to shop than Sunrise or Dainobu.

Stephanie N.

Yelp
This store is alright for the snacks and things- can't recommend the ready to go food aisle. I often cruise this type of Japanese supermarket looking for the next best onigiri but am often met with mediocre disappointment. Had a Mentaiko onigiri and was disappointed to say the least. More the place for packaged snacks.

Robin R.

Yelp
Great selection of Japanese products and brands. LOVE this place! I make a special trip down here.

genevieve d.

Yelp
This store has everything Japanese! Great products, sushi and food. I come here 1-2x/wk to get my Japanese fix.

Ellen C.

Yelp
Amazing Japanese supermarket that I happened to stumble upon while waiting for my dinner reservations. Super well stocked with a variety of items that I've never seen before at smaller Japanese markets around the city and Queens. Prices were very reasonable as well. They even sell face mask, stationary, home goods, in additional to food and snack and beverages. Definitely worth checking out.

Tina L.

Yelp
I love this Japanese grocery convenience store. It has everything you could think of for your daily life from food to kitchen ware and toiletries etc etc... I wish it's closer to where I live so I could go there more often!

Andrea W.

Yelp
This was such a nice find in the middle of NYC. I came in for some snacks to take with me on the train when I was on my way back to Virginia. It was nice to browse through their aisles and see all the cute Japanese cosmetics, skin care, art supplies, anime/Hello Kitty stuff. I also grabbed some Georgia coffee for a little caffeine pick-me- upper. They're all priced fair considering their location. I highly recommend!

Glenn C.

Yelp
This is a new massive brightly lit Japanese store. I originally thought it was Dainobu but then I realized it was a bit further south and it was way brighter/a lot more massive and the sign confirmed. They have a bigger selection of beauty care products by comparison. Can't remember the prices of the groceries by comparison outside of being similar and there being more of them though their prepared food selection is a lot smaller which is expected with Mi-Ne existing next door. Nice new Japanese store. I think the prices are slightly better a block away but both are good stores with fantastic selections (and at least you aren't climbing over people here.) Cashier was nice also. Sticking with this for now.

Bin L.

Yelp
This place is a few blocks down from Dainobu. When I entered, I saw that the place is similar to Midoriya in Brooklyn, which sells household appliances besides food. The products here aren't cheap. Choose to buy some satsuma-age fish cakes, a tea egg for ramen, and daigaku imo stewed yams. The place wasn't busy given that I came on a Wesnesday afternoon.

Sara Y.

Yelp
I called the store, no one answered. Since 4pm-9pm. I wanted to ask a question about food. answering machine said: no voice message is acceptable.

Tom T.

Yelp
A very cool Japanese supermarket and goods store. They have a pretty good selection of different Japanese shelf stable goods as well as a freezer case of other goods. Worth a visit.

Kathryn T.

Yelp
A larger and brighter Japanese grocery store that is added to the area. Top things: 1. Huge selection of a variety of items from grocery to personal care products to dining/kitchen items to shiba inu tote bags and decor. 2. If you need anything Pokemon related, you can probably find it here. 3. Same with socks. 4. And a range of shampoos and face washes. Yamadaya probably has the best selection of products in this part of Manhattan. 5. Be sure to check the expiration date of certain items. I've gotten a few things that were past their prime... if they're good, then the products are just fine.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Currently my favorite place to grab Japanese snacks and other goodies, Yamadaya is conveniently located by the West 4th station (A/B/C/D/E/F/M) and the Christopher St station (1). They have beauty and skincare, housewares, snacks, prepared and frozen foods, pantry essentials, stationery goods, and even my favorite Iwako erasers. Price-wise, I think they're quite competitive and the space is clean, big, and always well-stocked.

E W.

Yelp
I bought here a bunch of things to try. I also bought Kewpie mayo since its been on my mind for a looooooong time. Get home and look at label: Product of USA I feel scammed. I thought I am getting an authentic Japanese product. What the .........?!?! Check where your product is made before you buy it.

Helen A.

Yelp
Super cute store with loads of Japanese groceries and housewares too. They have the Poppin Cookin kits and are just $4.99!

Bonnie G.

Yelp
Like the Costco of Japan! You can get everything from sushi to cat keychains, scalp massagers, face cream, matcha tea, slippers, dog treats, sandwich bags, rice crackers and more. Well-priced and wacky. 5 stars!!!!

Kathy X.

Yelp
I discovered this Japanese specialty shop selling everything from: Snacks, sweets, tea, sauces, frozen food, beauty products, containers, knick knacks, and many other things, by a happy accident. I needed to walk in the opposite direction than I normally do after work and this place was only a couple of blocks away. I went when it was the soft opening, so everything was 10% off! The store is beautifully laid out with a very modern and clean look. There are so many amazing choices especially for food and beauty items. I immediately looked for and grabbed Senka Perfect Whip Collagen In facial wash, which is difficult to find elsewhere. I also picked up shrimp chips, ginger tea, frozen pork and chicken gyoza, and a special mocha iced dessert. The staff was wonderful. They were really helpful with answering any questions I had and finding what I was looking for. At check out, I was given free leggings and I chose the red colored one. Prices are very reasonable even without a discount. I didn't go too crazy with purchases on my first visit, but now that I know it's right by my workplace, I can return anytime.

Yelp
Definitely the best and largest Japanese market in Manhattan that I've been to! Village Yokocho is runner-up, and has its own charm (in non COVID times) for its secluded, tiny 2nd floor location. Love the fruit juice packet options, selection of instant ramen, and self-heating facemasks. Pretty good sweet options, including my favorite subtle Nagasaki honey cakes. One star off for their decision to stop carrying the artisan onigiri flavors that they had at opening! Management, I hope you're reading this so you can reverse course! The ume and shiso onigiri flavors were truly the best I've ever had (and welcome tips if anyone knows where these were made).

Rik K.

Yelp
I heard about this place from a friend of mine who said I should check it out. Well for one thing they have a different selection of items than Dainobu, Sunrise, and Katagiri. They definitely have a more varied snack selection and also they had a few items that Sunrise Mart use to carry but haven't stocked in some time. I once asked the workers at 3 Sunrise Marts about a favorite bottled cold tea that they had before and they told me that if they don't have it they might not get it in again. Lo and behold I find 4 of the large liter bottles of the tea here at Yamada! So I got 2 of them. The front part of the store was mainly food items but near the back of the store it looked a bit like Daiso. Many home improvement items as well as some stuffed Pikachu things. At the time I went which was around 5pm on a Sunday they didn't have many bento boxes. Maybe if I go at another time they might have more. One interesting thing I noticed was that the front store sign looked like the graphic for the super popular Demon Slayer anime. All in all the selection is good but one thing I did notice was the prices are higher. In the case of the items I got.. a lot higher. The teas I purchased were around $4 at Sunrise but here they were $6.29 and the rice crackers I purchased were $4.49 at Sunrise but here they were $6.69. But hey.. I wanted them and no one else seems to have them so. Nice place! I hope they lower their prices! :)

Yelp
I mean where do I even start for my love for this place? It basically has a mish mosh of everything you're looking for from snacks to frozen section (meat, dumplings) to housewares and beauty supplies. Heck, they even stock this Japanese band-aid brand that I haven't found in NYC before and used to always have to stock up in LA. - Snacks and drink selection are top notch - there's cookies, savory snacks, coffee, teas and then a cold section with your typical Japanese selection including beers. Although I purchase mochi from the refrigerated section and it was hard as a rock, so take notice of expiration dates in the fresh food section -Housewares - they have dishware, tupperware, kitchen utensils and cleaning supplies. It's basically a higher end version of what you might find in Daiso - Beauty section - I didn't get to spend a ton of time in these aisles but they have everything from toothbrushes, Japanese shampoos, facemasks, and lotions It's like Target, you walk in only "needing" a thing or two and next thing you know you've walked out buying half the selection in the store :)

Rie O.

Yelp
It's Chinese own- it's not authentic Japanese. Go to Dainobu which is 2 blocks away and it has authentic Japanese products and food.

Monika D.

Yelp
Our main reason to visit Yamadaya was because we heard they were selling Hong's seafood sushi grade fish/seafood and that's what we bought along with several other products. They have a great selection of everything from soy sauce, mirin, matcha, pots and pans, face masks, snacks and sushi! Once entering the store, everything is very clean and well organized. It almost seems overwhelming because they have sooo many items, but that means you can probably find whatever you're looking for! We bought golden curry, mirin, green pea snacks and Hong's seafood. Prices are very reasonable. All were great! Will definitely come back!

Alissa D.

Yelp
What an awesome store! I visited today right when they opened to check out their beauty selection (I was on the hunt for a specific lash brand that according to online, they offered). They had a HUGE section of beauty items, eyeliners, mascaras, false lashes, hair products, body products etc. Not to mention all the household/grocery/bath&body items you could ever want and need. I will definitely be back to get chopsticks, soup spoons and bowls plus other fun essentials! Everything is immaculately clean and neatly organized. Such a cute, fun store to browse in. I picked up my false lashes, a pair of comfy house slippers and some of their sushi. The sushi was GREAT for the price, very tasty as well. It truly was a "spicy" tuna. Would definitely be back to pick up the sushi grade tuna for poke or my own sushi night. Everything I purchased was very reasonably priced and I was so shocked I've never been there before! Stop by, browse around or definitely go for any of your beauty needs.

George Y.

Yelp
They have a beautiful storefront. Their only weakness is that they lack a fresh fruits and vegetables section. Grocery stores like Katagiri also have better to-go bento box options. Yamadaya used to have these delicious onigiri rice balls but they stopped carrying them for some reason. Overall its lovely and you could probably spend an hour just browsing through all the different household items, convenience store drinks and cosmetic options. It helps to know a little bit of Japanese for some of the items like Japanese pancake mix, where the instructions aren't translated. I found that sometimes Yamadaya has cheaper Hotpot/Shabu Shabu meat than Dainobu and vice versa, and since those stores are so close to each other it makes sense to visit both in one trip.

H T.

Yelp
I love this place! It's so clean and they have a huge selection of items: Food: Frozen Dry - noodles, seaweed, rice Condiments - a bunch of soy sauce, tamari, mirin, cooking sake, vinegar (rice, apple, black), etc Snacks - rice crackers, sweets (chocolates, etc) Tea - sencha, matcha, hojicha But their fresh food is still not as great as dainobu nor sunrise Household items: Great selection of kitchen knickknacks Tissue!!! Beauty supplies: I can loiter here forever! Face mask heaven

Amy Y.

Yelp
Just happened to come across this store filled with Japanese goods and supplies ranging from sauces/snacks to hair care. The place was extremely clean and neatly organized. Everything was near its place and the isles were decent sized so that two people can pass each other. They were having a soft opening at 10% off and my order came with a free pair of iPhone charger!

Jonathon C.

Yelp
Really well organized Japanese convenience store set up. Super clean and easy to shop through the different aisles. Employees were very nice and one pleasantly came and helped translate the Japanese packaging. There's a lot of range in every section and all felt surprisingly reasonably priced for the quality of the experience.

Sophia Yifan W.

Yelp
A great place for Japanese food and stuff. I went there with a Japanese friend and she recommended this place.

Ting Z.

Yelp
Japanese groceries with skincare products and food. Clean and bright. Staffs are sooo friendly. I love them. wish they have onigiri, pleaseeee

Emma P.

Yelp
Amazing selection and the staff is very nice, it's always fun to come here and browse the shelves for fun new treats to try. They have everything you could imagine!

Arianna C.

Yelp
I love love love yamadaya. There is an amazing variety of amazing and fun products from food to skincare to makeup to stickers and fun pens. Obsessed with everything I see and the staff couldn't be nicer!!!

Emily S.

Yelp
A big Japanese grocery with home goods / skin care. Aisles are pretty easy to navigate and they have a great selection if you're looking to cook Asian cuisine. They're strict on security but have not been personally bothered by it. Quick checkout.

Greogory L.

Yelp
Love the store but there's a rude cashier that works on a Thursday that always wears a beanie that never gives me a receipt and drops my change into my hand from 8 inches high. I don't know what his deal is but I avoid going on a Thursday from now on. He's a pos

Philip T.

Yelp
Happened to walk by here today and grabbed some pre-made sushi, which completely surpassed my expectations. Will definitely be back!

Victoria S.

Yelp
Lots of fun things, and the sushi is really good. It easily beat Citarella's sushi in a blind taste test, much to my surprise. (Surprise, because Yamadaya is better priced.)

Alexis S.

Yelp
My new favorite market! I've recently been trying to cook more, and their incredible selection of specialty ingredients does not disappoint. Pretty much every time I come in for ingredients to make a new recipe, I also walk away with a beauty item, stationary piece, or household necessity.

Grace H.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this shop!! Such a hidden gem.. I walked past it so many times before finally noticing it, and I'm so happy I did. So many cool and (for me) novelty products at such reasonable prices. The store is pristine and very friendly staff. I truly love it! Do yourself a favor and pay a visit!!
