Panoramic city views, Japanese gardens & Asian fusion cuisine
"Built as a private residence in 1914 and converted into its current form in 1960, Yamashiro is a massive Japanese restaurant overlooking Hollywood, and a place where ghosts can truly be themselves (the 600-year-old pagoda that sits on the grounds probably helps). The decor is admittedly pretty gaudy, and the food isn’t much better than anything you’d find at Hollywood/Highland, but at the end of the day, a tacky ghost is a fun ghost. So order a couple of rounds of house martinis and an oversauced sushi roll platter, and join the party." - brant cox
"If eating dinner in an over-the-top replica of a Japanese palace, complete with courtyards, a 600-year-old pagoda in the garden, and giant fishbowl cocktails, sounds like something you’d be interested in, it’s time for you to pay Yamashiro a visit. In the Hollywood Hills, just above the Magic Castle, this giant building once was an art museum, before becoming a private club for important Hollywood people in the 1920s, an apartment building in the 40s, and eventually a restaurant. The pricey Japanese menu of rolls, fried things, and steak is fine, but not the main event—you’re here for the views and the kitschiness of it all." - brant cox
"Listed among Los Angeles restaurants taking part in a promotional campaign to introduce Americans to wagyu through special menus (campaign runs until mid-December), with chefs experimenting with preparations of the specialized fatty beef from Japan." - Mona Holmes
"This 100-year-old Japanese restaurant above Hollywood has perfectly fine food and some of the best views in town. The top floor seats 70 and has A/V hookups for your boring company slideshow, but you can ignore that and look at the pretty views of the Observatory and Downtown LA. There’s also an outdoor skydeck that seats 70 and the garden courtyard that seats 150." - sylvio martins
"The massive Japanese restaurant in the Hollywood Hills has reopened its patio — so if you’ve been missing that sense of old, Los Angeles glamour or just want to feel like you’ve been dropped into the Ghost of Tsushima game for PS5, you’re in luck. In addition to birds-eye views of the city, enclosed tent covers, and lots of heat lamps, Yamashiro also serves dishes like soy ginger pork rib, pork dumplings, skewered yakitori, and hibachi pineapple fried rice. Reservations can be made here." - kat hong
