The 38 Best Manila Restaurants | Eater

"When Andre Chanco started Yardstick Coffee in 2013, his goal was to “up the yardstick” for specialty coffee in a city that had only one or two places for coffee-based drinks. Today, Yardstick is an institution for leisurely cafe-goers and aspiring baristas. Besides selling coffee drinks, Yardstick roasts and sells its own coffee (retail and wholesale) and equipment for both home brewers and professionals. Try the branch-exclusive drinks at MOA Square in Pasay, especially the Manila Latte, which is like a nonalcoholic pina colada with an espresso shot." - Toni Potenciano

Great coffee! Went here on a recommendation from a well known coffee shop in Sydney Australia (Diggy Doos) and am very glad I did 😊 This place has delicious coffee, and the waffles had the perfect balance of crunch & melt-in-your-mouth softness. Highly recommend this place to fellow coffee snobs who value good (Australian-level) quality coffee!

Late-night coffee runs work well here, and the interiors make it easy to stay longer than planned. They have that relaxed yet focused vibe where some people are catching up with friends while others are clearly locked in on their laptops, which says a lot about how comfortable the space is. It feels social without being loud, and calm without feeling too quiet. For drinks, I ordered the sea salt latte, which was okay. I also tried my friend’s Yardshake, and that one stood out more for me: rich, indulgent, and definitely something I’d order next time. Their menu leans toward thoughtfully made coffee drinks, and it shows in how consistent everything tastes.

Google
Yardstick Coffee is a reliable spot for good coffee. The espresso is smooth and well balanced, and the milk drinks are properly made, not overly sweet or heavy. If you like black coffee, their brews are clean and straightforward. The space is quiet and no-nonsense, and the staff know what they are doing. It is a place you go to enjoy coffee, not for trends or hype.

Google
My recent visit to Yardstick Coffee was unfortunately a letdown, leaving me confused about the cafe's hype. The cafe was quiet and empty, but not in a peaceful way. The overall vibe felt unwelcoming. There was no clear signage or indication of where to order, and upon entering, the staff did not offer any guidance or a friendly greeting. I ordered the Sweet Matcha. While the taste was "just okay," the most disappointing factor was the serving size and lack of options. They only offer one size, and it was noticeably small—even smaller than a Starbucks Tall cup. Given the pricing, the value proposition was immediately poor. The service was a major issue. The staff were not friendly or smiling at all, which contributed heavily to the unwelcoming atmosphere. The lack of proactive guidance on where to order made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a customer. For the small serving size and the overall quality of both the drink and the experience, the prices were very expensive. The cost does not match the poor service and tiny portions. I honestly don't understand the hype surrounding this coffee shop. The combination of unfriendly service, an unwelcoming atmosphere, and an expensive, undersized drink made this a bad experience. I will not be returning or recommending it.

Google
My visit here was one of those outings built on hype, I genuinely looked forward to and hoped would be an exceptional coffee experience. I have to commend the place itself; the ambiance was absolutely wonderful, providing the perfect, stylish backdrop for catching up or getting some work done. Eager to try their best, I ordered one of their best-sellers, Sea Salt Latte, fully expecting a complex and robust flavor profile. Unfortunately, my excitement was quickly dampened when the coffee arrived and tasted surprisingly watery, lacking the depth and intensity I anticipate from a specialty brew at this price point. It was a disappointing moment that left me questioning the value, as the quality simply did not live up to the hype and cost for me. While the environment is undoubtedly a draw, their product marked as a best seller that I ordered fell remarkably flat, making it difficult for me to see a return visit in my near future.

Google
As a huge patron of Yardstick Mall of Asia, (and a die-hard Yardstick fan), I’ve been eager to visit the OG branch in Esteban. (Which was unlikely since I wanted to visit their branch on Aguirre first — but apparently it’s closed on a Monday.) Now I get the hype and the memes (iykyk). From the design to the quality of food and drinks, though they cater to the upper middle class and rich neighborhoods of Makati, Yardstick is indeed a guilty pleasure that our wallets detest. I even held myself from ordering any food as I felt like I was already spoiling myself. Need not to mention that their aesthetic, interior design and architecture is semblance of a contemporary museum that curates its drinks which I believe Yardstick is going for. It’s worth the visit, worth the hassle and worth the price (that you’d ignore all those financial videos you’d watch the night prior that you should just make your own coffee at home.) The moment you enter, live la dolce vita. I’d definitely return for another round of Sea Salt Latte, Good Food, 800 pesos off my wallet but a smile that can keep my depression off bay for a week.

Google
Absolutely loved my visit to Yardstick. The coffee was exceptional; smooth, rich, and clearly crafted with care. The space was modern and minimalist, perfect for hanging out or getting some work done. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and the overall vibe was calm yet lively. Whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or just looking for a great café to relax in, Yardstick is worth the stop.

Google
We first tried the Yardstick at SM Aura which made us want to try this one. The location is amazing. It’s a quiet little street in Makati. The cafe has a lot of space and you can choose from a variety of seating options, I found that interesting. They have a bar area, a corner with high seats, cozy corners, as well as group tables. We ordered two coffees — sea salt latte and a signature drink made of sweet corn. These were both great — while I’d have liked more of a coffee flavor in my drink, the latte was amazingly good. Chill place to spend a few hours with a coffee. The rainy evening definitely added to our cozy experience. Will be back!

Yelp
We came to Yardstick Coffee for breakfast and coffee, and were so pleased as soon as we walked in. Yardstick Coffee is more than just a cafe. It's a showroom where you can see the baristas making all the different beverages with high-quality espresso machines, like La Marzocca in the center of the space. It's a great way for consumers to learn more about how their coffee is prepared and made, only using the best ingredients and tools. We ordered a Vanilla Flat White, Drip and a Butterscotch Waffle. The items were delivered to our table as they were finished, getting our drinks first. The drip was one of five brews that they had that day and was very, very good! It was a bold and dark roast, reaffirming those who drink drip coffee why it's always a solid choice. The Vanilla Flat White was made with Madagascar vanilla, espresso and foam from milk, and it was awesome! You could really taste that strong vanilla flavor without it being too sweet, which I liked. And once the Butterscotch Waffle came we were pleasantly surprised to find all that it came with! When I ordered it I figured it would be a waffle with some butterscotch sauce (I love butterscotch!), but it had two scoops of Madagascar vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, slices of banana that were flambeed with brown sugar, creating that butterscotch flavor! How cool is that? Glad we were sharing this waffle because the portion was more than what we could handle, but it was so tasty that we didn't want to stop. Loved the different, fresh ingredients used here, making a huge difference in flavor. I highly recommend trying a waffle here, even if you just plan to get coffee here! Ambiance of Yardstick Coffee is open, spacious and inviting. Since the baristas are making your beverage in the center of the room, you're invited to watch and learn how its done. There's also a separate room in the space where they host cupping classes! Gotta love that and would've taken advantage of one, had we been in Manila during one. For anyone who loves coffee, Yardstick Coffee is where to visit in Manila. It goes beyond coffee chains and customer service. It's a place where you can not only enjoy what you're consuming, but you can learn where products are from and how its made, giving you a better understanding of why a damn good cup of coffee matters.

Yelp
Good ambience - reminds me of cafes in Melbourne. Staff were friendly and easy to talk to. Tried their chai tea latte and my husband quickly finished it as it was so good. Their flat white was also great.

Yelp
Great specialty coffee that's freshly roasted in the store. I love their brewed coffee, preferably prepared using the Aeropress or Hario V60. They also offer insightful coffee workshops in case you want really learn more about specialty coffee. Full review on my blog.

Yelp
On paper, Yardstick Coffee has everything. Great third-wave coffee, fantastic technique, good food, a wide open space, fashionable interiors, and pride in what they do. It's proximity to Your Local is also a plus in my book. And yes, they do serve a very good Flat White. I would highly recommend Yardstick to my friends, no question about that. So why don't I sound so excited? I dunno, man. There's something about Yardstick that doesn't resonate with me. If I had to provide specifics, it may have to do with its brand identity. See, I don't find Yardstick warm and cheerful at all. It's too sleek, too sharp, and the furniture is not comfortable at all. It's like you get the feeling that they want you to come in, get a coffee, and get out. I've also noticed that people tend to keep to themselves here (To be fair, Curator is also like that), as compared to the other coffee shops in Makati (Commune and Restock come to mind). Maybe Yardstick is not for interaction. Certainly nothing wrong with that. There are days I would go to a coffee place just to buckle down to work, and I would certainly think that Yardstick is brilliant if you want to keep to yourself and have great coffee. Ultimately, Yardstick is a damned good coffee place. I may not be totally onboard with their imaging, but that is solely my opinion alone.

Yelp
If you're craving for some extraordinary third wave coffee, you'll need to look no further than Yardstick Coffee to get satisfy your craving. They not only serve wonderful coffee, they also roast the beans in-house. Varietals available include Colombian, Ethiopian, and may of the other finer coffees from all around the world. When you're hungry AND craving caffeine, Yardstick also serves some really outstanding sandwiches, and their waffles are world class! Tip: If you want food to go with your coffee that's beyond sandwiches and waffles, Yardstick is just a hop, skip, and a jump from Your Local, which serves a broad selection of interesting fusion cuisine. Coffee fiend that I am, on my last visit I tried their cold brew and I really enjoyed it. However, if you're not a fellow "fiend", then I'd suggest ordering something else. The cold brew here is very strong, and served in a large glass; drink it, and you might not sleep for a week or two ;-)

Yelp
Sundays in Metro Manila are special: no traffic, lots of free time for most people, and just a generally laid back vibe. This place tucked away on a quiet street in Makati is the epitome of the coffeeshops you'd see on VSCOam or Instagram. Luckily the coffee and pairings they serve here live up to the hype. For something sweet but still filled with warm coffee flavor, their mocha is a must-try. For something strong and smooth, their cold brew coffee is among the better ones in Metro Manila. Their flat white is also noteworthy, but I prefer the ones from Toby's Estate. As for food offerings, I love their waffles. The pairings and flavors like lemon curd and apple pie a la mode are simple but so satisfying. Coming here to tambay or work is always a pleasure. The atmosphere is airy, hip and chill. Definitely a gem on the third wave coffee circuit.

Yelp
I've worked in Makati for a year and this third wave coffee shop has become my most favorite cafe in the area (or probably in the whole metro). Their coffees are really really good, one of the best I've ever had. You can totally tell that everyone here is passionate about what they do. This aesthetic place is a must for coffee lovers like me.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Yardstick Coffee. I came in for a Flat White and some waffles, and had a really good afternoon. A non-coffee drinking friend took a chance on their PB&H milkshake, which we both agreed tasted much too soulful and deep for its unassuming, all-white appearance. And you can tell that everyone who works at Yardstick actually want to be there. Andre Chanco, their "Coffee Guy" pretty much runs the place, and was very accommodating when I asked to meet with him to discuss holding an event there (they are so easy to work with). The servers/baristas know their stuff, and seem like a really happy bunch. Even their security guard seemed really happy -- we caught him dancing to some of Andre's very current, hipster music (it might have been Chvrches that he was dancing to). I'm a fan of their brews, too. I realized through Yardstick Coffee, that Ethiopia might be my favorite place of coffee origin, via Yardstick's Suke Quto blend. I was lucky to be have been able to attend one Coffee 101 workshop (the same event we asked to work with them on), and learned so much. These guys have really done their research, which I appreciate, because I feel that Manila -- a city built on fast food joints -- lacks intelligent food places like this.

Yelp
Yardstick was one of my favorite places to hang out in when I wanted to relax during work days (Back when I still worked in Makati which isn't so long ago). I was lucky to have my office only a two minute walk away from Yardstick. It still is one of my favourite cafes to hang out in when I visit Legaspi Village, in Makati because of the soothing interiors and lighting of the establishment. It's perfect for work meetings, book launches, catch ups with friends, and for me, alone time. They have quite a selection of different kinds of Coffee. They have Black, White, Super White, Filter, Cold Brew, Concept Coffee, Roaster's Pick, etc. I've tried a lot of their caffeinated drinks but my two favourites are their Gibraltar and their 12 hour Cold Brew coffee (this brew is especially most effective for slow, sleepy, lazy days). They also have a waffle menu and a variety of sandwiches! Yes, waffles! Waffles and coffee, how perfect can this combination get?! They have Salted Caramel Waffles, Carmen's Best Waffles, Beef Tapa sandwiches, Three Cheese sandwiches, and many other innovative dishes! Their coffee and waffles never fail to make a bad day, much much better.

Yelp
Very cool cafe. Walked here from Greenbelt and it was very easy to find. Lots of seating. Staff are very friendly, helpful, and easy-going. Loved our food. I got the Barista's Breakfast and an iced black. Super good! I highly recommend if you're in the area!

Yelp
Great coffee, great food, and great staff. Overall an amazing experience! Must try: Chicken & Waffles and Barista's Breakfast.

Yelp
Yardstick coffee is in my opinion the least pretentious third wave coffee shop here. It won't confuse you with fancy interiors, vintage items and bare ceilings. Plus it serves straight-up good coffee. I really loved the cafe latte. The quality is top-notch but a lot can be said about the quantity. The serving cups in yardstick is a tad smaller than compared to what you'll see in Toby's Estate and Craft Coffee. The salted caramel waffles were also delicious. These were served with salted caramel on the side and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The waffle batter was crunchy and light, which was completely opposite of what I expected (spongy and heavy). This was definitely a plus since you're able to finish it in one go without feeling too bad about yourself. I also tried the Dear Fred coffee and beer hybrid but I still don't know how I'll feel about it. But a drink to provide the right amount of buzz and caffeine? I'm sure that some would easily sign-up.

Yelp
The place considered to have the best coffee in the metro has a special place in my overly caffeinated heart. When I'm in the area, I try to come to Yardstick as much as possible since I don't live that near. Always such a treat! Local roasters for the win! Clean, minimalist, and dare I say, hipster? Yardstick caters to the buzzing crowd of Makati's Legazpi Village and word has reached beyond that (hi). Although recently I've noticed more of a laptop and latte crowd hovering above their screens with possibly unnecessary thick rimmed glasses (it's easy to tell when you don't have lenses). Don't look at me like that. I actually need my glasses to see. The menu is simple and concise enough that it's pretty easy to pick what you want to order unless you're fickle. I think the hardest part is excitedly waiting for the coffee to arrive. I usually bring my mom with me because she enjoys Yardstick just as much as I do although we get quite different drinks. She usually gets the Americano (similar to a long black) which she believes is really strong and wakes her up immediately. It's also not too bitter for her unlike the cold brew I must always have. It's hard for me to enjoy hot coffee here since I find the weather too damn hot for anything that's boiled unless I'm in a controlled environment (hello, extra cold air conditioning). As bitter as it is (like my soul), Yardstick's 12 hour cold brew is tremendously delicious and does the job. To be honest, I wish my body could take more than 2 cups of coffee a day. But that would drive my parents crazy and I don't really want to be the main cause of that. I've also been getting into their iced long black coffee because... Dundundun... Yardstick started bottling their cold brew so it's easy to take home and store in the fridge while I get to try new things and not feel the FOMO too much. Easy to buy by the bottle or by 6 bottles if you're a coffee addict like me. These babies are also available for sale outside (stockists are listed on their Instagram page) so that's pretty convenient if you're craving that cold brew outside of the area. If you get really really hungry, Your Local is right through the swivel door that just looks like a dark brown wall. You can also order Yardstick's coffee if you dine at Your Local. Yardstick offers an array of waffles with sides and they look super cute! I got the lemon curd with maple syrup waffle. Best mix of sweet and sour! #instagramthatshit Yardstick is just a really fun place to hang out and enjoy a cup of joe (or tea if you're into that!) There's definitely enough room for a bigger group although sometimes there is that one group that gets a little too loud but it's okay. I don't judge. On the outside anyway. Definitely worth the drive from suburbia and parking is free on Sundays!

Giti M.

Yelp
I passed by the cafe by chance, and good thing I entered! I ordered a regular brew and the salted caramel waffles. The plate of waffles was huge and came with ice cream. Both the coffee and waffles were delicious (being both a coffee and waffle snob, that's a huge compliment coming from me). I'm definitely coming back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Yardstick's a 10 minute walk from CSA so my friend and I are fond of walking there on Friday afternoons after dismissal. The cafe has a one-of-a-kind interior filled with quirky signs and colourful tables and chairs. Its signature look was what got me to shoot a short film inside the place. You can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aN2wKG0DPE Aside from how incredibly Instagrammable the place is, their offerings are great. Their signature Yardshake, an ice cream & coffee blend, is something you won't find anywhere else in the metro. Order it with their red velvet waffles! Enjoy your food and drinks to the tune of their well curated playlist which is a mix of happy indie and pop tunes that round out your Yardstick experience. Cheers!

Yelp
In a big city where coffee shops basically stand side by side or right in front of each other, having that unique selling point will guarantee a steady influx of customers regardless of the time of the day. Yardstick has that drawing point. It is a coffee shop, a working space, a coffeemaking studio and a sort of mad science lab for coffee geeks and enthusiasts. If you are very particular about your coffee, and you would like to know the processes and the steps that create your perfect cup, Yardstick is the perfect place. It is an immersive coffee experience that allows you to wander around their premises and watch the baristas as they prepare coffees using several methods to cater to customer preferences. They have good old espresso machines that are always whirring with activity. They also have pour-over, Aeropress and cold brew coffees to suit any meticulous coffee-lover's palate. I have always been a good fan of La Marzocco machines, and I get excited every time I get to sample an espresso brewed from this monster of a machine since it is a very neat and powerful gizmo that can bring out the best in the coffee grounds. Aside from the topnotch ingredients and beans that go into Yardstick's coffee, you are guaranteed that you are getting a good cup because the baristas know what they are doing. The setup was planned so that the knowledgeable baristas can share their know-how in the fundamentals of coffee. Here, you can have a good conversation with the passionate people running the show. You can consult with the owners on the basics of coffee machine operations, and they can provide you with your own machine (plus maintenance and care) if you ever decide to put up a coffee shop yourself.

Yelp
My office colleague describes Yardstick in the most straightforward way possible: "Yardstick is unbelievable expensive but serves damn good coffee". I am one of those 'go to work then go straight home' kind-of-people so I missed how this place came to be. But when I saw it...it was love at first sight! I am in love with it's modern hipster vibe with quirky decors lining its very sunny space. In one end, you'll see all the tables and chairs. If you're as weird as I am, I though they were hug domino tiles which you can play with but was I so wrong. Those 'domino tiles' were tables! But how cute are they! In the other end, you'll see all the coffee machines that are sold or are used for the classes they conduct for coffee enthusiasts! Yes, coffee here is expensive but you do get your money's worth. They also suggest bottled detox juices for those fitness nuts! If ever you find yourself in Esteban Street (and for me that's usually the case since I work here), drop by and experience coffee at its finest.
google avatar

Mo M.

Yelp
More than a coffee shop, I love how Yardstick also offers classes for the budding coffee connoisseur! They've got tasting flights -- so you know what makes the difference between their blends and what exactly coffee "notes" are-- as well as other classes that would be beneficial to anyone who wants to start home brewing legitimately... or possibly put up one of their own cafe! Speaking of home brewing, Yardstick also has a mini specialty store in the corner of their cafe where they sell all things related to coffee making, from individually packed beans (which they can grind for you, depending on the machine or brewing method you prefer, with no extra cost!) to grinders, to espresso machines! I've bought an Aeropress here, along with some filters for my chef-sister who's also a hopeless caffeine addict. Yardstick is probably the antithesis to all of the chain cafes that we're used to seeing, as it is always flooded with bright light (helped along by their big, nearly floor to ceiling windows) and super colorful, with the blocks of color amidst the wooden furniture. Compared to the dark, comfy but sometimes dreary over stuffed couches and dim light of Starbucks and CBTL. My favorite brew of theirs is the Dear Fred-- an interesting coffee-beer that's great after lunch or dinner. I also fancy their long black-- which is just a fancy way of calling an espresso with water. Great kick for the afternoon work hours where our Spanish colonial habit of afternoon naps (siestas) still muscle their way in, even after a century of "independence".

Yelp
Whenever I set up meetings, my default place is always Yardstick in Legazpi Village. Found in a leafy corner in Makati's busy business district, Yardstick definitely stands out amongst the café franchises peppered about in the area. Stepping inside the café always feels so inviting because of its brightness, spaciousness and colorful signature accents. Always abuzz with people and energy, it might be hard at times to get a table for a big group. They serve their own third wave coffee, specially roasted by the team in-house. My go-to drink is usually the 12-hour cold brew. They've also got a short menu of dishes, both savory and sweet, that go well with the coffee. Aside from being a café, Yardstick also hold seminars and workshops for coffee lovers or business owners who want to expand their knowledge about the almighty bean. So if you're in the mood to learn more about coffee or just hang out or work remotely, Yardstick is definitely the best place to go to, by a yard.

Yelp
I like Yardstick. It's bright, young, and vibrant without being too rowdy. I sometimes bike here from my place to just sit and hang out both solo and with company. The interiors boast high ceilings, cement walls and floors, with clean geometric shapes for their wooden tables and seats. You'll see a pop of bright color here and there for interest. Very young, very modern industrial. The tables in particular are good for working on the fly. The wall nooks are fitted with enough outlets for you to plug in lest, God forbid, your gadgets conk out on you. If I had to choose what to order? I'd go with their flat white and/or one of their waffles. This place is one of the few that I think does thick cut waffles right. The waffle to air ratio is just right. It doesn't feel too bogged down with soggy batter and is airy enough to absorb some melted ice cream (or syrup) nicely. Bonus? The place smells like coffee. Which makes me happy. Wouldn't that make you happy too?
google avatar

Ria G.

Yelp
I came into Yardstick expecting to find another one of those "hipster" cafes that Manila is so into these days, instead I left feeling kind of bad I judged the place too quickly because it serves one of the best Flat Whites I've ever had. The space is huge for a cafe and I find such a great spot to work in because of the bright lighting and the comfortable seating. The place is also a feast for the eyes with all kinds of coffee paraphernalia lying around the place for you to indulge in. Apart from the Flat White, their cold brew with or without milk is a great option for warmer days when a cup of hot joe just won't cut it. I like how its served in dark bottles--it just gives cold coffee a bad ass vibe. Their dessert menu looks pretty good but while I haven't had the chance to try it, that just gives me another reason to come back.

Yelp
Yardstick is one of the relatively new third wave coffee projects sprouting around Metro Manila. Located in the middle of Legazpi village, it's a haven for office goers who are craving for their caffeine fix but are sick of the same old Frappuccino in that other coffee joint. Wide-open spaces, bright wooden fixtures and color accents give the place a very airy feel - conducive to having a post-lunch meeting, or to just meet up with friends after a long day's work. Because of the minimal, Scandinavian-y design of the place, Yardstick somehow reminds me of the Blue Bottle cafes in San Francisco. Drinkwise, I like their cold brews with milk and their macchiato, but pretty much everything is yummy and scrumptious. That includes their brownie and cookie menu. It's a great place to go, especially if you're having dinner around the area (Your Local is right beside it). A pity that the place doesn't have too many seats, especially for its space.
google avatar

Katrina E.

Yelp
Just right beside Your Local (one of the good restaurants in Makati) is this coffee shop. In fact once you're done with your meal in Your Local, there's actually a swinging door that could lead you to Yarstick Coffee. This place could be where you grab your coffee (or their famous Yard Shake) to end your good dinner in Your Local. You can even save room so that you can have brownies or even their Torched Bananas and and Marshmallow Fluff with Chocolate Waffle (yum, I want). For me, it's the best thing they have here. This cafe has a very relaxed feel - super high ceilings and it feels like you're in a warehouse type of place. If you look closely near the cashier, there is a table full of different merchandises (food mostly). Some stores consign in this cafe, like Marou chocolate. Pretty cool right!

Yelp
Their brewed coffee is good, and there is enough stuff on the menu that you can also bring your espresso beverage drinking friends.
