2 Dozen of Montreal’s Best Middle Eastern Restaurants | Eater Montreal

"Saffron predominates at this snug, candlelit Iranian establishment in NDG, which pairs grilled kebabs with saffron-topped basmati rice, and even offers saffron ice cream for dessert. Adding to the flavour palette are marinades such as walnut-and-pomegranate paste. Their appetizers are equally engaging, with yogurt-based sauces and vegetarian options such as grilled aubergine." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

Google
I had an incredible dining experience here ,the food was flavorful, fresh, and beautifully presented. The kebabs were tender and juicy, and the saffron rice was perfectly cooked. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere felt warm and authentic. You can really taste the quality and tradition in every bite. Definitely one of the best Persian restaurants in town ,I’ll be coming back for sure!

Google
We had an amazing experience at this Persian restaurant! The kabab koobideh was absolutely delicious—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly grilled with that authentic taste.served with fresh herbs and grilled tomatoes that made the meal complete. The portion sizes were generous, and everything tasted homemade with real attention to detail. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff made us feel right at home with their friendly service. It truly felt like dining in a traditional Persian home. If you’re looking for authentic Persian food, especially kabab koobideh, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Google
Terrible food, terrible service. Food took over 45 min from ordering to come out. The $16 Falafel came out with only 3 inedible rock hard balls over some iceberg lettuce drenched in white sauce. Chicken was dry. Steak was bland and not worth finishing. I had to go up to the bar about 5-6 times to get the server's attention. Finally they had the audacity to charge 20% REQUIRED SERVICE FEE for parties over 5. I'd give 1 star but they were able to take the falafel off the check after some back and forth arguing with the owner who said they've never had a complaint in 28 years. I highly doubt that.

Google
We stopped by Yas Restaurant late on a Friday night when they were just about to close (they had even turned their “Open” sign to “Closed.”) I still opened the door and asked if they were serving tea, and to my surprise they welcomed us in with so much warmth and hospitality. They served us fresh tea, and even brought out some Persian sweets like zulbia. At the end, they kindly served us baklava as well. The staff were incredibly friendly, and we felt truly welcomed the whole time. It was such a lovely, cozy experience in this family-run restaurant. We will definitely come back to try their Persian food next time. The atmosphere, kindness, and overall service were amazing. Thank you for such a wonderful late-night experience! ♥️✨

Google
Yas Restaurant has some strong points, especially when it comes to the tenderness of the kabobs—they were cooked well and had a nice texture. The grilled vegetables were decent too, but overall, the flavor profile fell short. For a place with such a promising menu, I was surprised by how bland most of the food tasted. The rice, unfortunately, was overly oily to the point that it became mushy, and a few pieces that fell on my lap left noticeable oil stains on my clothes. Definitely not ideal. While it wasn’t a bad experience, it was a bit underwhelming. I’d consider coming back if their seasoning methods improved. Right now, it feels like it has potential but needs refinement.

Google
Took our moms to dinner for Mother’s Day, and it was amazing! The food is so good my boyfriend and I always get the Yas Special and it never disappoints! Our moms got the chicken and lamb combo all top tier! Definitely worth it every time :)

Google
Absolutely loved this place! As an Iranian, I can say the food was authentic and delicious. The kabob was incredibly juicy and flavorful—just like home. The service was warm and attentive, and everything from start to finish was top-notch. Highly recommended for anyone looking for high-quality Persian cuisine!

Google
The food was mediocre. The waitress was full of attitude. I asked her kindly to take the food out of our table as we had finished our lunch and was gonna eat ice cream. She denied our request to remove the plates. I was eating Safran ice cream with smell of kabab and onion. Very rude and atypical of a good restaurant. There was no other customers eating in that place. I would never recommend this restaurant to my Iranian fellows.

Yelp
We came here with high expectations, but the experience was mixed. The wait was insanely long although the restaurant wasn't very slow. What was quite frustrating is that several people who arrived after us were served before we were with little to no communication... It seemed like there was only one server working. While she was really nice and polite, she also appeared very overwhelmed. This likely contributed to the delays, but better staffing and clearer communication would've helped. The food was just okay. It's not bad, but not memorable enough to make up for the wait. We also noticed that the utensils weren't properly cleaned, which was a big turnoff... There's definitely potential here, but improvements in organization, cleanliness, and staffing would make a big difference. Hopefully, this was just an off day.

Haniet B.

Yelp
I decided to give it another try and unfortunately we had a terrible experience. Waited over an hour for our food to arrive and the chicken was completely uncooked and pink inside. When I told them, there was no apology and they just took the same chicken and overcooked and brought the same plate pack. So if the plate was contaminated with the uncooked chicken, it could potentially contaminate the rice too. While we were waiting, others that came after us, received their food way before us and finished eating when we got our food. So instead of coming to apologize for the delay and offering some bread or something while we were waiting, they just avoided our table. Not only that, they charged us %20 tip automatically. When I politely told them that things were so bad, the server said we were so busy with online orders that our grill was full. No apologies or acknowledgment! This was definitely our last time!

Yelp
Delicious Persian food. A little pricey but I think the food quality is worth it and the portions are generous so my family of 4 only usually orders 3 dishes and has leftovers. Our favorites are the Kashk badejeman (grilled pureed eggplant), the chicken kebabs, and the ground beef Kebab. If you get the plates with rice, the rice is delicious as it comes with saffron rice and is seasoned very well (not sure if they add butter or what but its so yummy). They give a generous serving of complimentary lavash (thin flat bread) that comes with butter that is perfect to eat everything with.

Minoo F.

Yelp
I have eaten at this restaurant a few times . Their food is hit and miss . Sometimes it is good and sometimes it is really bad . If you have not had Persian food , please don't make this restaurant a place to try Persian food for the first time because chances are ... you will be disappointed.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here and their koobideh was great. I'll definitely be back again to try their other stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
Fool me once , shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. The waiting time for the food is incredible long, for standard dishes - koobideh and white rice.. you're looking at 30 mins-1 hour minimum no matter how empty the restaurant is. Staff literally ignores you... no matter if you make eye contact, or flag them down. We sat down a party of 3 at a table or 4 and the host literally removed my place mat , plate, and utensils from right in front of me... instead of grabbing the setup from the empty seat.. wtf? Appetizer of yogurt took 30 mins to be handed to us. Ridiculous. Sticking with taste of Persia, or Negeen.
google avatar

Isabella P.

Yelp
My girlfriend ordered koobideh & I got chicken thighs. The chicken thigh was so flavorful and juicy not dry at all. Tried a bite of the koobideh which was also moist & yum. The food does take a minute to come out but it's well worth the wait and our waitress was so lovely
google avatar

Leyla H.

Yelp
We had a very juicy koobideh here. The shish kabob was also delicious but smaller than expected. Ash reshteh was more like a bean soup and less like what you'd expect from ash. The service was just a bit slow for the three or four tables they were serving then. We enjoyed the overall ambiance and liked the friendly staff. We will certainly go back.

Yelp
Saturday night we had a delicious meal at Yas. My husband had the filet and koobdideh kabobs. They were delicious. The meat was very tender and the rice was perfect. I had the jewel polo with steamed chicken. I love the sweet and savory. The sour cherries were so good with the rice and chicken. The best part of the meal was having it the next day! Service was thoughtful and fast. They were busy with a lot of to go orders, but our server did a great job juggling. If you want a yummy, hearty meal with leftovers this winter, go to Yas.
google avatar

Mona S.

Yelp
I was really hoping to give Yas more stars after giving it another try. We ordered the shishlik and ground chicken kabob. My shishlik was burnt and the pieces are incredibly small compared to other Local restaurants. The ground chicken kabob was tasteless and rubbery. The rice was not fluffy nor tasteful at all and there was no side of herbs or soomak included.

Yelp
Just ordered a bunch of food from here to-go and enjoyed every dish. Located in the plaza with Amato's philly cheesesteak, a weed dispensary, liquor store ... it's not in the greatest environment but plenty of parking. 5/5 Koobideh kabob - My favorite dish. Very flavorful, cooked well. The jalepeno that comes with it is NO JOKE. Super spicy. Beware! 5/5 Shirin Polo Chicken - SO GOOD. Loved the orange peels and nuts in the rice. Chicken was super juicy and flavorful. Husband's favorite dish. 4/5 Ghormeh Sabzi - Only like 2 pieces of beef in the stew and it crumbled in my mouth. I liked the stew itself, though. 4/5 Filet mignon kabob - The meat came very thin, I thought it would come cubed and medium rare. Wasn't as tender as I'd like. I asked to make sure there was no dairy in the dishes and the waitress was attentive to confirm they use oil to cook the meat. One of the better Persian restaurants around. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
We had a reservation for 14 people for dinner. The restaurant was clearly unprepared for a group this big. They didn't have the table ready and we had to help move the chairs. We were there for an hour and a half and over half of the group never got water despite asking for it repeatedly. It took more than half an hour to get them to take our orders for appetizers and the waitress never came back to take our orders for the main dishes. After about 75 minutes, we decided that we would never get our food before the end of evening, so we decided to leave. Here's the kicker - the bill came with a 20% mandatory service charge for nonexistent services. The owner didn't offer to remove it, nor did he comp any of it. We ended up paying $110 for the following: 2 small cups of yogart, 2 small plates of hummus (thin smears - about 1/8" thick - across what looked like 2 small salad size plates), and 1 medium sized plate of mashed up grilled eggplant, and 14 thin, cold lavash bread in tiny squares (~3.5" x3.5"), a coke, a hot tea and a beer. This place is a one and done for us.

Yelp
As Persians, we didn't care for it. Doesn't compare to Chelokababi in Sunnyvale. Should've just gone there. Tried koobideh, soltani, kashke bademjoon, Baghali polo, Ashe reshte, ghormezabzi tahdig and Albaloo polo. The ghormezabzi flavor was the best.

Yelp
We've come back to Yas multiple times since our first visit, and they are always excellent! Staff are so wonderful and friendly, they always greet us warmly and have recognized us when we come in. Takeout out is just as good as dine-in, and we always have leftovers from their entrees. Such a perfect weeknight dinner for flavorful dishes that leave you full but never feeling bad. So good!

Yelp
Highlights: &This is our go-to Persian restaurant and we will be back &Good size portions (takeout) &Chicken koobidieh is our favorite & Consistent pricing on website Food: *Beef and lamb koobidieh (to go special #5) *Two a la care chicken koobidieh skewers Our favorite is the chicken koobidieh, so we probably should have ordered a to-go special with more chicken. That being said, we were pleasantly surprised by the generous portions -- for both menu items but mostly the to-go special. There was a lot of meat and even more rice. Pricing: The prices on their website are the same as if you call in. I ended up calling in and noticed the price is the same as the website (not that ppl call anymore but the pricing is consistent). Doordash is higher (of course). Overall: This was a go-to restaurant for us before/during and after the pandemic. If you see the online menus the wraps are spelled "rap". Pretty sure the servers don't bust a rhyme, but I like to imagine what the Chicken Thigh Rap would sound like. Notes to self: Get the to-go special with three chicken and three beef/lamb skewers next time.

Yelp
Best koobideh in the whole bay. The previous owner was great but the new owner has really stepped it up. Not only the koobideh here tastes better than the other places people brag about but also just look at the plate. It's filled with rice, grilled tomato and jalapeño. They also give alot of quality greens, bread and butters. Wow. It's truly an amazing experience. The employees including the owner are so nice and greet you with a genuine smile and they are so kind. The place is small but meaningful. I highly recommend this place even foe people who haven't tried Persian food before. Start with koobideh!!

Amir K.

Yelp
Excellent service and great food , even though we got there very late and near to closing time and they were so busy, Mrs Afsaneh and Mrs Sahar took care of us very well and very welcoming hospitality with smile and kindness!!! 10 star !!!! for sure for Afsaneh and Sahar .

Cindy S.

Yelp
The food is not bad but the WAIT is insane. We sat down at around 4:50 ish (I know because I sent my bff a text when I sat down) and didn't get our food until almost 6:00pm! They kept telling us it's because they had "a lot of orders". I didn't see a single DoorDash driver the whole time we were sitting there. If they had just admit they forgot our order it would have been fine. A lot of the reviews on their google say they take forever/f up orders. Should have read those reviews before trying this place.
google avatar

Mar Mar A.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant after 2 years. First of all they're unorganized and forgetful, they forget what you order so maybe they should start writting the order so they don't forget!!! Second the food came cold so imagine cold kebab!!! Third since the day I had their Koobideh kabab I have stomachache :/ Not going back there!

Yelp
Delicious. Love Yas special. This place is one of the best Persian restaurants in the BayArea.

Yelp
OMG! OMG! OMG! this place is beyond amazing and the food was just perfect. as an LA native who recently moved here and has been missing Raffi's Place, this filled the massive ghormeh sabzi shaped hole in my heart. THANK YOU!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Very poor service, food mediocre HIGH prices!!!!!! Will not be returning!!!!!! Lack if customer service poor
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend love this place, it is our go to place for Persian food. The ambience is very homey, it feels almost as if you are at family, as the service is also amazing. The staff and owner here are super friendly and helpful when it comes to trying new things on the menu. Our go to order is usually Koobideh, Tahdeeg, Fesenjan, and for desert the Makhloot is to DIE FOR. I personally dream about Makhloot daily (I am not joking its that amazing)
google avatar

Yelp
A true hidden gem! From the moment we walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and made us feel at home. The yas special was a culinary masterpiece, perfectly seasoned with the freshest ingredients, and the atmosphere was lively yet relaxing. Highly recommended for a delicious and memorable meal!
google avatar

Yelp
First time coming to Yas restaurant we got drawn to coming here because every time we passed by no matter what time and day of the week this place always was a packed house! Upon walking in we were super welcomed in and ordering we were recommended for our family to the Yas special which had chicken, filet minion & ground beef. Also ordered the yogurt with cucumber and wow got to say with all the combinations of everything the flavors was amazing! Everything super fresh and even the mint leaves with the bread topped everything off. Service was great , you can see they have regulars which shows the consistency of quality of food they have. Definitely be back !

Fariba E.

Yelp
My husband and I had lunch at Yas restaurant today. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner and were impressed with their professionalism and customer service. The Barg Kabob and Zereshk Polo was absolutely amazing, with perfectly balanced flavors and beautiful presentation We highly recommend this place. Thank you so much.
google avatar

Shab F.

Yelp
First time in Yas and the food didn't disappoint . We got Barg and Mahicheh both very tasty and well prepared, served in good portions also. Both waitresses were very kind and attentive. However, just like every other Persian restaurant in Bay Area, Yas is over priced. The one disappointing part was the bread and butter. It is customary in Persian restaurants to serve bread, feta cheese and herbs before they take your order. Yas served bread and butter. Bread was not fresh and butter just doesn't do the justice.

Amir H K.

Yelp
A Taste of Home at Yas There are meals that fill your stomach, and then there are meals that fill your soul. Yas Restaurant is the latter. The moment I stepped in, the scent of saffron and grilled meats wrapped around me like a memory. The lighting was soft, the music gentle, and the energy -- unmistakably warm. But what truly made the evening unforgettable was Zahra. Zahra didn't just serve food. She served comfort. Her smile was steady, her timing impeccable, and her presence quietly reassuring. She moved through the room like someone who understands that hospitality is an art -- and she paints with grace. I didn't just eat at Yas. I lingered. I listened. I felt seen. If you're looking for a place that nourishes more than just your appetite, Yas is waiting. And if you're lucky, Zahra will be there to welcome you home.

Yelp
The first time we came to Yas Restaurant was over 8 years ago, so this review is long overdue. My husband and I love Persian/Mediterranean food and this place is so delicious. We brought my parents and brothers here long ago and it was their first time trying Persian/Mediterranean food. They loved it. I now bring my three teenage kids and they love it. We love all the meats such as the fish kabob (salmon), chicken, shishlik (lamb), fillet, and koobideh (ground beef). We get the variety so we can get a great taste of each of the flavorful meats. We also love the appetizers. Kashk-o-Bademjan is so flavorful. Two of my kids do not like eggplant, but they love this pureed eggplant. Mast-o-Khiar is also an amazing appetizer that brings this nice delicate freshness to begin the start of our amazing dinner. Sahar is also amazing every time we go to Yas Restaurant. Her pleasantly, sweet personality adds a beautiful touch ending our family dinner.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
Kashk-o-Bademjan 4 flavorful mashed eggplant, mixed w/ mint, fried onions Fillet Mignon / Barg 3 chewy, medium juicy Baghali Polo w/ Lamb Shank 3 dill weed rice, yellow rice, fall off the bone tender, too plain Bastani 5 yellow Persian ice-cream, pistachios, not too sweet, refreshing Faloodeh 4 flavored shave ice, tiny rice noodles, subtly sour
google avatar

Wallace S.

Yelp
Small and cozy Persian food. Everything I've ordered has been amazing, and the zoolbia and bamieh with their tea is the perfect finish. Not sure what tea they serve exactly but it perfect balance with the sweetness of the dessert

Customer S.

Yelp
Food is always A+ in my book! Big portions, friendly staff with exceptional service. They'll start you with bread and butter, order tea while you're at it and waiting for your food. The meal for 2 people can feed 3-4 people!
google avatar

Rose B.

Yelp
today I have a totally different experience than the past and found the place very welcoming by the owner and servers. Music was playing the basmati rice quality was great and I noticed the change on the Rice. I tried chicken kebab with rice and it was fairly good however I enjoyed in ambience and service, which was quite

goharshad b.

Yelp
The food was bad!!! The kabob was thin and dry. The eggplant dish was taken out of the refrigerator and was not warmed. We called him and they took it and put in Microwave with no apologies. overall you want to go or take your friends.
google avatar

Annabelle R.

Yelp
It was easy to make a dinner reservation through Yelp less than two hours before our intended visit. We arrived early and they had a table ready for us. It's a clean and casual environment with plenty of indoor seating. By 7:15pm, the place was packed, the staff workin hard on a Saturday evening. I appreciated the effort they put into providing a positive experience for customers. The food was great, we had the chicken breast kabob plate and charbroiled filet mignon kabob with basmati rice. Each dish came with a blistered tomato and jalapeno (super spicy!) on the side, and though the chicken was slightly dry, everything on our plates was full of flavor and super satisfying, the filet mignon cooked to a perfect medium rare. I really liked the restaurant, it's definitely a great option for delicious Persian fare in San Jose.
google avatar

Bill H.

Yelp
The food was delicious! The restaurant is a nice quiet place with kind staff. I got the chicken thigh kebab and some ice cream. Everything was delicious and the staff were quick to provide service. I will be coming here again.

Yelp
Their food SUCKED! Food quality is just plain lousy. Ghormeh Sabzi tasted like crap, it's not made fresh but likely from pre- packaged mass produced batch sold in super market, mixed with other spices, and a human hair. (Yuck! Wear a hair net!). Old, bland and unappetizing. I am grateful for the two pieces of beef meats in the bowl. :) In fact, it's much worse than grocery store quality such as those sold in Rose Market in Mountain View. TBH, I make better Ghormeh Sabzi than them as this is my favorite Persian dish. I have never eaten Ghormeh Sabzi worse than this one in my life! Ghmei had undercooked split peas, without any saffron aroma. It tasted bland. Salmon kabob was too sour as they were marinated in lime juice for too long; as a result, they taste like lime than salmon. It's not worth it at $29. Beef Kabob, puffed up with baking soda, was the only passable dish. If they get it wrong, they can close shop. Rice has no trace of Saffron aroma. I smelled it. Neither Saffron nor Tumeric but food coloring. Don't fool me on Saffron. I use them all the time and also grow them in my garden. Persian rice is supposed to spice it with Saffron. If not, at least tumeric. With the price they charge, they are so cheap to the bone! Persian tea had no flavor. It's incomparable to the tea bag my deceased mother-in-law used to serve me. It might be old or expired. Service was slow. Bathroom disgusting. You rarely see bathroom being ugly, filthy and inattentive in a Persian restaurant, but in case you are still curious, Yas has one. No wonder the crowd was so light on a Nowruz night. Our happy Nowruz festivity just didn't include a happy meal. I guess that's life. To sum it up: overpriced bad food, average service. thanks but no thanks. Definitely first and last time.

Yelp
Best Persian food in the Bay Area. The meats are tender and juicy. Always cooked to perfection. Their side dishes are also great. Ambience is very quiet and pleasant. They always have Persian music playing so it's very cultural. The service is also very good. The servers are always checking yours needed are met and the owner as well makes sure you are always well taken care of. Order anything here everything is beyond expectations! It's also easy to park and easy to get a table any time of the day. They surely will accommodate you very fast. Also they have keto friendly dishes like their Kobedeeh and vegetables plate.

Yelp
I Love their food, but this was our first time ordering two catering trays. Walked in asking for a same day order -- family order of koobideh and a family order of chicken. The order was ready for pick up within an hour. The food was delicious and my family enjoyed it so much, that there was barely any leftovers. Thank you for the comfort of your wonderful food. We will be back to visit and order catering again soon.

Abdulrhman A.

Yelp
Friendly service and really yummy food :) So far this is the best i had Highly recommended

Yelp
Favorite Persian restaurant in the Bay Area- nostalgia might be a factor since I have been coming here when the craving for Persian food hits for more than a decade and it's always reliably delicious! Generous portions, reasonable prices, flavorful food, friendly and welcoming/homey vibe. Personally my favorite dish is their koobideh + vegetable platter.
google avatar

Brindley W.

Yelp
Ambience was quiet on a Saturday afternoon. The food was phenomenal. We had chicken kabab and some fresh chopped veggie salads. 10 out of 10. The waitress and manager were so kind as well.

Camille M.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, & ambience. I personally love the Yas special in their menu. Will definitely keep going back here.

Yelp
The food is amazing for the price it's worth it We went with my kids and hubby 2 months ago or so and we will return whenever we want Persian food The girl who served us was the sweetest and so patient and didn't give me a hard time cuz my youngest made a mess The owner was nice and welcoming my husband is Mexican so people do JuDGE us and he was nice to him which is a major plus on my end I want to be able to take him to my culture restaurant cuz he loves Persian food n be respected Super chill down to earth clean and simple and cute We had so much left overs! Kabob everything was amazing

Judy N.

Yelp
3.5 stars for my last two visits. Ordered dinner for pick up about three weeks ago and dined in for lunch today. To go items were all delicious and portions were ample, but it took over an hour. They told us 30 min, but we waited about 45 note minutes at the restaurant. Seems that they were short staffed and couldn't keep up with the takeout orders? Today's comments are more about the dine-in ambience than the food. We liked 2 of 3 three plates ordered and the appetizer, too. Food temp was hot and presented well. The bone-in chicken was too dry and too spicy/sour. Other comments: I feel that maybe there are more tables now. Not sure, but the space seemed more crowded. I remember a time when they used tablecloths; maybe with a plastic or paper cover, but still, white tablecloths, which softened and refined the atmosphere. Also remember flowers on each table. The thin white sheets of paper under each plate and thin, small napkins made this feel more like a fast food restaurant. I think there is a somewhat new floor, which, I'm sure, is more sanitary than the previous carpet, but also reverberates sound more, especially when the music is loud.

Yelp
Absolutely the best authentic food! The cook is fabulous friendly and generous with the portions! Do not skip the Jewel rice!

Yelp
One of the best places you could eat at. The food is amazing, service is excellent, restaurant is always clean and looking super fancy. They have full bar and the restaurant can be reserved for events. Would recommend this Persian restaurant 100/100.
