The sign outside Yaso Jamaican Grill says "Give thanks always," and I've appreciated reading it daily on my drive home. As one who's never been to Jamaica and has limited experience with the nation's cuisine, I was eager to try it. Recently, a co-worker ordered lunch from the restaurant. It looked and smelled so good, I could nearly feel an island breeze coming from the box.
Yaso Jamaican Grill is tucked away in Fountain Square, and if you're lucky, a parking spot can be scored in their private lot. Upon entering, you'll hear reggae music and see images of the island and its residents adorning the walls. It really sets the scene. There's plenty of room to dine in. Be warned, if you want to carry out, order ahead of time - either online or via phone. This isn't Burger King: you'll have it your way, but the food takes time to prepare.
Yaso's menu isn't small, and everything looked appetizing. I ordered the jerk chicken. It's a large portion - and thank God! Arrive hungry. It's absolutely delicious, tender, juicy, and spicy. Customize the spiciness or sweetness by choosing the right sauce. Typically, I'd say red beans and rice are just red beans and rice, but not here. I'd describe them as "thick," and the clumps will melt in your mouth. The cabbage and plantains are an added bonus. This food has soul. Obviously, beaucoup attention and care went into its preparation.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how friendly and caring the staff are at this restaurant. They give a damn, and with the way things have been going lately, it's like going back in time.
Yaso Jamaican Grill, thanks always.
