Located at the bottom floor of the Eaton, I came to this Michelin-starred restaurant when I had a lunch moment that my friends or family were unable to join. Since I stayed at this hotel, I did get a little bit of a discount, which was nice. The place was very quiet, as I arrived around opening time. The decor is a bit stale, but still elegant. While you probably don't have to dress up, I came in business casual, as opposed to having the temptation of coming down straight from my hotel room after just rolling out of bed in my pjs.
The starter of salty fried little fish was a good touch to get the appetite going. I could have eaten a whole box of these crunchy savory delights. However, I wasn't here for glorified bar snacks, especially ones that were charged separately (but they were so good that I let it pass). Dim sum here is a la carte, so don't expect the loud and lively cart service.
The shrimp rice roll (蝦腸) was excellent, as the rice noodle was thin and delicate, and the shrimp was cooked just right. Likewise, the shrimp dumplings (蝦餃) provided a refined experience in the month. Quality ha gow has a thin skin that manages to hold shrimp that is juicy and flavorful. This one definitely checks off the marks.
The siu mai (燒賣) was a bit of a luxurious taste that I'm not accustomed to seeing with these open faced pork dumplings. Each dumpling had scallop on top, covering the pork. It provided a more decadent flavor. Lastly, the mini egg tarts (蛋撻) had a nice flaky crust, with a smooth and balanced egg filling inside.
The only major aspect I can complain about the food was the presentation. While it's clean and orderly, there's not much color to the food. The siu mai could've used something on top of that scallop. Maybe a touch of tobiko roe to give it some color? If I'm paying $35 USD for one person (albeit I ate like a champ) for dim sum, I can whine a bit about the presentation.
I have to admit, this is one of the stronger dim sum experiences I had one my trip. While the atmosphere is more refined and the experience was more comfortable than Tim Ho Wan, you get a better value at THW with dim sum that can match. However, the service at Yat Tung Heen is excellent, with very attentive and polite service. You'll have your tea refilled and empty plates/baskets removed promptly.
Yeah, Yat Tung Heen is a bit of a hidden spot, but come here if you want to get out of the sun and get some fancy-schmancy dim sum.
